Abstract:In this paper, two kinds of Li4Ti5O12–TMO (Fe2O3 and CuO) composites were synthesized by a two-step solution-combustion method. Both LTO–Fe2O3 and LTO–CuO composites delivered high reversible capacity of 172mAhg−1 over 100 cycles. Li4Ti5O12–CuO also showed excellent rate performance of 106mAhg−1 at 20C. The enhanced performance can be ascribed to the high capacity of TMO and the possible contribution for the electron conduction from Fe/Cu generated in the conversion reaction.

Abstract:Carbon coated Li4Ti5O12 (C-LTO) particles have been synthesized by hydrothermal method and high-temperature calcination process. Nanostructure and carbon-coating has been characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution TEM (HR-TEM), selected electron diffraction (SAED), and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) combined with X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The prepared particles are comprised of highly crystalline spinel-type Li4Ti5O12 with the size range of 20-70 nm. HR-TEM imaging and STXM-XANES spectromicrocopy confirmed the amorphous carbon layer uniformly covered on the surface of single LTO particles with optimized content and coating thickness (~5 nm). The electrochemical performance of C-LTO particles as an anode in lithium-ion batteries is evaluated, demonstrating both improved rate capability and cycling performance, which was attributed to the enhanced electron transport/high electrical conductivity and fast lithium-ion insertion/extraction, as a result of uniform and optimized amorphous carbon coating on the C-LTO particles.

Abstract:Although lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12, LTO) is a promising anode material for fast charge/discharge lithium-ion batteries, its application is limited by the low Li diffusion coefficient and low electronic conductivity. In this work, the spray drying method was combined with solid-state calcination to prepare Li4Ti5O12 @LiAlO2 (LTO@LAO) composite anode electrode materials with micro and nano spherical structures. The formation of an ultrathin LAO coating of about 2 nm on the LTO surface was evident. The Li4Ti5O12 @LiAlO2 composite (3 wt%) exhibited an excellent specific capacity of discharge (156.5 at 10 C and 146.2 mAh/g at 20 C) compared with pristine LTO. Meanwhile, at 10 C rate, the specific capacity of the battery was maintained at 152.8 mAh/g after 500 charge/discharge cycles, and it retained 97% of the initial capacity. The smallest irreversible capacity was exhibited by the LMO/LTO-3 full cell with spinel LiMn2O4 as the positive electrode, which had a capacity retention rate of 98.79% after 100 cycles. Therefore, the low cost of synthesis, excellent rate capabilities, and remarkable cycling stability performance of the prepared LTO@LAO composite anode material make it an excellent candidate for application in high-power devices and energy storage systems.

Abstract:Spinel Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) is a promising candidate for lithium-ion battery anodes because of its exceptional stability and safety. However, its extensive application is limited by a high comprehensive cost, poor electronic conductivity, and other inherent defects. This work presents a novel synthesis procedure to synthesize carbon-coated Fe-doped LTO composites through carbon reduction, in the presence of Fe-containing industrial H 2 TiO 3 as the titanium source, and glucose as the carbon source. The presence of the Fe-dopant is confirmed through XRD, with Rietveld refinement and EDS experiments. Results show that Fe 2+ replaces a portion of Ti 4+ after doping, leading to an increase in the LTO cell parameters and the corresponding cell volume. FLTO/C, presents a capacity of 153.79 mAh g −1 at 10 C, and the capacity decay per cycle is only 0.0074% after 1000 cycles at 5 C. Moreover, EIS experiments indicate that the incorporation of Fe and carbon lowers the charge transfer resistance and improves the diffusion and migration of Li + . Notably, since this preparation process requires no additional Fe source as a raw material, it is simple, cost-effective, and suitable for large-scale production and further application.

Abstract:To increase the specific capacity and conductivity of lithium titanate (LTO), low-cost and environmentally friendly carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were used to composite with Al3+ and Mn4+ co-doped Li4Ti5O12 (LTO-Al/Mn) to improve its electrical properties. The Al3+ and Mn4+ were successfully substituted for Ti located at (16d) sites in the LTO and the CQDs formed a composite with LTO-Al/Mn. The specific capacity of the first cycle at 0.1C increased to 296.5 mA h g(-1), and the impedance decreased to 16.8 omega. The specific capacity maintained 236.0 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles.

Abstract:Lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12, LTO) has several disadvantages as active material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) such as low conductivity and poor capacity. To overcome these drawbacks and specifically to improve electrical performance of LTO, we used solvothermal method to synthesis LTO and to dope it simultaneously with Al and Mn. Doped LTO was then incorporated into composites containing graphene (G), carbon nanotube (CNT) or carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to enhance specific capacity and conductivity of LIB anodes containing these composites as active materials. To have a further study of different carbon materials composite with doped LTO, these materials we obtained were thoroughly characterized. LTO doping and incorporation into composites not only increased its specific capacity and also decreased its impedance. Al3+ and Mn4+ substituted Ti4+ located at 16 d sites. First cycle specific capacity values and impedance values of anodes consisting of composites containing doped LTO and G, CNT or CQDs were 261.7, 286.2 and 296.5 mA h/g (at C/10 rate) and 13.99, 8.28, 18.79 Ω, respectively. Capacity retention after 100 cycles for these anodes was 84.6, 90.67 and 83.4%. LTO doping by Al3+ and Mn4+ and combining it with G, CNT or CQDs effectively improved its electrochemical performance. The best performance was obtained for anodes containing composites consisting of a combination of doped LTO and CNT.

Abstract:A tin oxide-carbon composite (SnO x -C) was fabricated as a candidate for use as an anode in lithium-ion batteries through the pyrolysis of a ditin citrate precursor. The simultaneous formation of tin oxide and semigraphitized carbon via a facile, solid-state pyrolysis yielded a composite containing tin oxide nanocrystals surrounded by a framework of flexible, porous carbon. Fabrication of tin oxide nanoparticles encased in semigraphitized carbon, led to the enhanced reversibility of Li2O formation, prevented the aggregation of tin during lithiation and suppressed particle fracturing during cycling. The resulting SnO x -C composite exhibited an exceptional electrochemical performance as an anode material candidate for lithium-ion batteries with an initial capacity of 541 mAh g–1 and 80.6% capacity retention over 400 cycles at a high current density of 900 mA g–1 (1C). Lower current density studies [450 mA g–1 (C/2)] have shown the material to have an initial capacity of 667 mAh g–1 with 88.7% capacity retention over 400 cycles, whereas a current density of 180 mA g–1 (C/5) gave a capacity of 710 mAh g–1 with 88.8% capacity retention over 400 cycles. Through a systematic analysis involving X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, cross-sectional analysis, and post-mortem analysis, we examine how the architecture and composition of the SnO x -C material leads to a high capacity retention tin oxide-carbon composite anode for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:As one kind of promising anode materials for Li-ion batteries, titanium niobium oxides have attracted great attention due to their high theoretical capacities and high rate performances. Herein, TiNb6O17/C composite with TiNb6O17 nanocrystals distributed among amorphous carbon has been synthesized via an in situ sol–gel and then thermal decomposition process. The as-synthesized TiNb6O17/C composite presents reduced crystal size and improved electronic conductivity compared with the pristine TiNb6O17. The TiNb6O17/C displays both excellent rate performance (high specific capacity of 129 mA h g−1 at 30 C) and good cyclic performance (low capacity decay rate of 0.016% per cycle for 500 cycles at 10 C). These results indicate that the approach as reported is a simple yet effective way for high-performance anode with high-rate capability.
One-pot synthesis of soft carbon-combined Li2TiSiO5 composites with oxygen vacancies as long life and high rate anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Li2TiSiO5 has been proposed as a practical anode material for lithium-ion batteries with an ideal operational potential of 0.28 V vs. Li/Li+ which can fill the voltage region between graphite and Li4Ti5O12. Herein, soft carbon-combined Li2TiSiO5 composite with extra oxygen vacancies is successfully prepared through a one-pot process. When employed as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the novel Li2TiSiO5/C composite delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 443 mA h g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1, and presents a reversible capacity of 165 mA h g−1 even at 1600 mA g−1. The long-life cycling is achieved with a capacity retention of 273 mA h g−1 after 1500 cycles under 500 mA g−1 between 0.1 V and 3.0 V. The enhanced cycling stability and prominent rate capability are largely ascribed to the improved conductivities, faster electrochemical reaction kinetics and strong pseudocapacitance effect. This superior lithium-storage performance provides a new opportunity for the further practical applications of novel titanium-based carbon composites as electrode materials in high-power storage devices.

Abstract:Amorphous TiO2 nanoparticles are synthesized by microemulsion method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as dispersant for the first time, and then they are used to synthesize the Li4Ti5O12/C composite by a simple solid-state method. The amorphous TiO2 nanoparticles have high reaction activity with Li2CO3 to promote the synthesis of Li4Ti5O12/C composite at lower temperature and shorter time. The grain size of prepared Li4Ti5O12/C composite with different carbon additions is less than 400 nm. The Li4Ti5O12/C composite shows high specific capacity and very long cycling life. The specific capacities of the Li4Ti5O12/C composite with 5% carbon addition at 0.1, 1 and 5 C rates are 162.4, 147.4 and 114.9 mAhg(-1), respectively, and its capacity retention after 600 cycles at 1 and 5 C rates is respective 99.86% and 92.95%. The synthesis method can be used for a mass production of Li4Ti5O12/C composite in industry.

Abstract:A poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) coated Li4Ti5O12 (LTO/PP) composite is synthesized by a facile and convenient approach, which involves dispersing LTO in an aqueous solution of PEDOT: PSS, followed by rotary evaporation accompanied by an ultrasonic procedure. After the coating process, LTO is covered by a homogeneous PEDOT: PSS layer, which effectively improves the electrical conductivity and processing capability of LTO to form a more homogeneous electrode sheet, and thus impart more favorable electrochemical kinetics as compared with the pristine LTO electrode. The LTO/PP electrode exhibits better reversible capacity and rate capability compared with the LTO electrode, delivering a reversible capacity of 177.2 mA h g(-1) at 0.1C and reaching a capacity of 169.1 mA h g(-1) with a capacity retention of 97.8% after 100 cycles at 0.5C. At the rate of 10C, the LTO/PP electrode delivers a capacity as high as 161.1 mA h g(-1) (91.0% of the value achieved at 0.1C), as compared to 144.5 mA h g(-1) for the pristine LTO electrode.

Abstract:Carbon-coated Li4Ti5O12 sample was synthesized by a sol-gel method. The Li4Ti5O12 powders were obtained by calcinations of the gels at 750, 800, 850, 900 degrees C at N-2 atmosphere. The structure, morphology and electrochemical properties of the materials were characterized by SEM, XRD and charge and discharge. The final product sintered at 850 degrees C demonstrates excellent performance with a specific capacity of 163.5 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 1C. Abstract:The Li4Ti5O12/C composite with lump morphology and excellent rate performance are synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method followed by a low temperature heat treatment. In the hydrothermal process, the introduction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant significantly improves the rate performance of Li4Ti5O12/C composite as anode material for lithium ion battery (LIB). The specific capacities of the obtained composite at charge and discharge rates of 0.1, 1, 5, 10 and 20 C are 176, 163, 156, 151 and 136 mA h g(-1), respectively, which is apparently larger than those of the Li4Ti5O12/C free from CTAB in the preparation. The Li4Ti5O12/C prepared in presence of CTAB also shows excellent cycling performance at high rate, which is attributed to its larger diffusion coefficient of lithium ion (6.82 x 10(-12) cm(2) s(-1)) and smaller charge-transfer resistance (R-ct) (19.2 Omega) than those of the composite (1.22 x 10(-13) cm(2) s(-1) and 50.2 Omega) free from CTAB in the preparation. The Li4Ti5O12 particles obtained in presence of CTAB are coated uniformly by a thin carbon layer with a thickness of similar to 1 nm, whereas the Li4Ti5O12 particles obtained in absence of CTAB are covered by relatively thick surface layers with a thickness of similar to 2.5 nm, which is too thick, blocks the lithium ion diffusion and leads to low ionic conductivity.

Abstract:A crystalline Ti2O1.3(PO4)1.6 in the form of C@Ti2O1.3(PO4)1.6/TiO2 composite was synthesized by a glucose-modified hydrothermal method. It showcases the highest reversible capacities, excellent rate property and remarkable cycle performance compared to its poorly crystalline counterpart, particularly maintaining a capacity of 233.9 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 1000 mA g−1.

Abstract:Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 and pristine Li4Ti5O12 electrodes have been synthesized by a solid-state method. The structure and electrochemical performance of these as prepared powders have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the galvanostatic charge–discharge test. All samples have agglomerate structure with the primary particle size of about 1µm. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 (LLT5) possesses high capacity and excellent rate capability. The improved electrochemical performance of Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 (LLT5) is clearly related to the improved electronic conductivity and lithium ion diffusivity. The high cycling performance and wide discharge voltage range, as well as simple synthesis route and low synthesis cost of the Li4Ti5O12–Li2TiO3–TiO2 (LLT5) is expected to show a potential commercial application.

Abstract:Omnibearing acceleration of charge/ion transfer in Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) electrodes is of great significance to achieve advanced high-rate anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Here, a synergistic combination of hydrogenated LTO nanoparticles (H-LTO) and N-doped carbon fibers (NCFs) prepared by an electrodepositionatomic layer deposition method is reported. Binder-free conductive NCFs skeletons are used as strong support for H-LTO, in which Ti3+ is self-doped along with oxygen vacancies in LTO lattice to realize enhanced intrinsic conductivity. Positive advantages including large surface area, boosted conductivity, and structural stability are obtained in the designed H-LTO@NCF electrode, which is demonstrated with preeminent high-rate capability (128 mAh g(-1) at 50 C) and long cycling life up to 10 000 cycles. The full battery assembled by H-LTO@NCFs anode and LiFePO4 cathode also exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance revealing an encouraging application prospect. This work further demonstrates the effectiveness of self-doping of metal ions on reinforcing the high-rate charge/discharge capability of batteries.

Abstract:In this study, we report a carbon-coated Li4Ti5O12/hard carbon composite as an anode for Li-ion batteries. The composite anode provides a clear edge in state-of-charge (SOC) estimation of Li-ion batteries and thus enables efficient energy management and health assessment. The shape of the charge/discharge curve for Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is significantly modified by the addition of the hard carbon in an optimised amount to present a smoothly sloped voltage profile in the voltage window between 0.01 and 1.5 V. This voltage range is highly effective in avoiding overcharging of a type of Li-ion batteries, where cell voltages remain constant over a large SOC region. Compared with the pristine LTO anode charged/discharged between 3 and 0.01 V, the composite anode, in addition to showing an improved specific capacity and cycling stability, demonstrates a strong enhancement in the rate capability; at a rate as high as 20 C, a capacity of 160 mAh/g is still retained, which has been proven to arise from a dual improvement in the electronic conductivity by the hard carbon through mixing and the soft carbon via carbon coating. The advantages in SOC prediction and the excellent rate capability are expected to greatly promote its practical application. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Li4Ti4.98Nd0.02O12 exhibits excellent rate capabilities and cycling stability even at a high current rate of 10 C. Particularly, even without utilizing carbon black as conductive material, the Li4Ti4.98Nd0.02O12 still shows outstanding rate capability and cyclability at a rate of 5 C. The excellent high rate performance may be ascribed to the increased lattice constant and improved electronic conductivity resulting from the Nd-doping. The novel Li4Ti4.98Nd0.02O12 material stands as a promising potentially high rate anode material to be used in power lithium-ion battery.

Abstract:Porous microspherical Li4Ti5O12 aggregates (LTO-PSA) can be successfully prepared by using porous spherical TiO2 as a titanium source and lithium acetate as a lithium source followed by calcinations. The synthesized LTO-PSA possess outstanding morphology, with nanosized, porous, and spherical distributions, that allow good electrochemical performances, including high reversible capacity, good cycling stability, and impressive rate capacity, to be achieved. The specific capacity of the LTO-PSA at 30 C is as high as 141 mA h g(-1), whereas that of normal Li4Ti5O12 powders prepared by a sol-gel method can only achieve 100 mA h g(-1). This improved rate performance can be ascribed to small Li4Ti5O12 nanocrystallites, a three-dimensional mesoporous structure, and enhanced ionic conductivity.

Abstract:The Li4Ti5O12/Co3O4 composites were prepared by hydrothermal reaction method with different Co3O4 mass content (3%, 7%, 11%, and 15%). The Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles were set in-situ on the Co3O4 sheet. Co ion was doped into the Li4Ti5O12 lattice. The first cycle specific capacity firstly increased and then decreased with Co3O4 content increasing, which the discharge capacity reached the peaking value that the first capacity was 1111 mAh/g and the specific discharge capacity retained 240 mAh/g after 200 cycles. After 200 cycles of charge and discharge, the retention of the capacity was 96.4% at 0.1 A/g, and the retention of the capacity was 98.4% at 0.5 A/g.
