Abstract:AlMgTi-based metal–intermetallic laminated composites were successfully fabricated through an innovative dual-step vacuum hot pressing. First, this study prepares the AlTi-based laminated composites by vacuum hot pressing at 650 °C. Then, the researchers place the Mg-Al-1Zn (AZ31) magnesium alloy between the prepared AlTi-based laminated composites at 430 °C for hot pressing. This study investigates the microstructure, phase composition, and microhardness distribution across interfaces of the intermetallics and metal. A multilayer phase (Mg17Al12, Al3Mg2, and transition layers) structure can be found from the diffusion layers between Al and AZ31. The microhardness of the material presents a wavy distribution in the direction perpendicular to the layers; the maximum can be up to 600.0 HV0.2 with a minimum of 28.7 HV0.2 The microhardness gradient of an AlMgTi-based composite is smoother due to the different microhardness of the layers, and reduces the interface stress concentration. The bending strength of AlMgTi-based composites can reach 265 MPa, and the specific strength is 105 × 103 Nm/kg, higher than AlTi-based composites.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Aims to Solve The paper aims to enhance the strength and toughness of metal-intermetallic layered composites (MIL composites) through interface effects. Specifically, the researchers prepared AlMgTi-based MIL composites using an innovative two-step vacuum hot pressing method. This novel AlMgTi-based MIL composite features a multi-phase diffusion layer structure, which can improve the lightweight performance of the material and optimize its bending properties. ### Main Research Content of the Paper 1. **Material Preparation**: - First, hot pressing was performed at 660°C and 4MPa to prepare the AlTi-based layered composite. - Then, a second hot pressing was conducted at 430°C and 20MPa, placing pre-treated AZ31 magnesium alloy foil between the AlTi-based composite, ultimately obtaining the AlMgTi-based MIL composite. 2. **Microstructure Analysis**: - The AlMgTi-based MIL composite formed a dense diffusion layer without cracks or voids. - A diffusion layer with a thickness of approximately 150μm was formed at the Al-Ti interface, and a diffusion layer with a thickness of approximately 190μm was formed at the Al-Mg interface. - EDS and XRD analyses determined the phase composition in the diffusion layer, including phases such as Mg17Al12, Mg2Al3, and Al3Ti. 3. **Hardness Distribution**: - The hardness of the AlMgTi-based MIL composite exhibited a wavy distribution, with a maximum value of up to 600.0 HV0.2 and a minimum value of 28.7 HV0.2. - Due to the hardness differences between different layers, the hardness gradient of the AlMgTi-based MIL composite is smoother, reducing interface stress concentration. 4. **Bending Performance Test**: - The bending strength of the AlMgTi-based MIL composite reached 265MPa, with a higher specific strength (105×10^3Nm/kg) compared to the AlTi-based MIL composite (95×10^3Nm/kg). - The fracture mode of the AlMgTi-based MIL composite mainly consists of alternately stacked tough layers and high-strength layers, which can effectively hinder crack propagation. Through these studies, the paper demonstrates the significant improvement in strength and toughness of the AlMgTi-based MIL composite and reveals its unique microstructure and mechanical properties.
