Abstract:The properties of binary blazed grating were theoretically analyzed with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The diffraction efficiencies and diffraction angles of -1, 0, and +1 order for the grating varying with wavelength, grating structure, and the etch depth were studied when the incident angle was 30 degrees. The numerical simulations revealed that the binary blazed grating presented high stability of diffraction efficiencies with wavelength shift.

Abstract:Gratings are key components in many optical systems such as spectrometers. Improving their dispersion is very important for their applications, but improving the single-order diffraction efficiency of an ultrahigh dispersion grating is still very challenging. Here, we propose an analytical approach for the design of a new type of grating named hybrid grating, which consists of a subwavelength grating and a non-subwavelength grating. The proposed analytical approach is based on a physical model in which the non-subwavelength grating acts as an ultrathin reflection grating and the subwavelength grating acts as an antireflection coating. Using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis and the finite-difference time-domain method, we numerically demonstrate that multiple hybrid gratings designed at different wavelengths using the proposed analytical approach show a diffraction efficiency of greater than 95 % in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light, an angular dispersion of greater than 0.8 mrad/nm and a deflection angle of greater than 80 degrees. Furthermore, we numerically demonstrate that by using a combined approach to optimize the parameters of a hybrid grating, the diffraction efficiency in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light can be increased to more than 97 % under the condition that the angular dispersion and the deflection angle of the hybrid grating remain unchanged. Our work provides an avenue for rapid design of gratings with high angular dispersion, large deflection angle and high diffraction efficiency.

Abstract:Wehave recorded geometric-phase diffraction gratingusing the method of holography on a thin layer of dichroic dye. A transmission liquid crystal cell hasbeen assembled inorder to obtain electrically-controlled diffraction in visible range. Also, using software for electrooptical effects modeling wehavecalculated the diffraction efficiency (DE) of the LC-based phase grating as a function of the voltage amplitude at the electrodes,es-timatedtheDEvariation as a function of LCcell thickness, LC materialbirefringenceand the radiation wavelength. The experimental data qualitatively matched with calcu-lation results. 1-st order DE of16% (at 532 nm) has been obtainedforsingle-sided phase grating LC. Furthermore, we have observed the decrease ofDEwith the increase of radiation wavelength.

Abstract:In this paper, we explain and unify the low diffraction efficiency behavior of echelle gratings at blaze wavelengths under Littrow mount in terms of the metal refractive index (RI). The similarity in the diffraction efficiency (DE) behavior (e.g., efficiency decline and valley-like diffraction curves for low-efficiency orders) of echelle gratings with different metals at TM polarization points the research line of sight to the RIs. Further, the numerical calculations based on the rigorous vector diffraction theory show that the efficiency behavior of the echelle grating at TM polarization is extremely sensitive to the imaginary part of the RI. This is because there is a series of low light-collecting ability (LCA) regions as the imaginary part of the RI changes in the echelle grating, resulting in several disturbed DE zones. In addition, the increase in groove depth improves the LCA at both polarizations, which moves away from the low LCA region at the TM polarization. This leads to low polarization sensitivity and higher DE for echelle gratings, further revealing the essence of the efficiency improvement by increasing the groove depth. From the RI to the LCA, these results will give new concepts to designing and fabricating broadband high-efficiency echelle gratings.

Abstract:Mathematical formulas are derived for predicting diffraction efficiencies of a grating made on a thick transparent parallel plate (substrate) or cemented between two plates. The formulas are applicable in two situations: (1) when the coherence length of the light source is greater than the thickness of the grating but less than that of the substrate; (2) when the thickness of the substrate is not precisely known, therefore only the average values of the diffraction efficiencies can be expected. There is no limitation on the number of propagating diffraction orders that are present in the system. The derivation uses the concept of energy scattering matrix, therefore it is simpler than a previous method that yielded limited results.

Abstract:The work started 20 years ago [Appl. Opt. 42, 6255 (2003)] investigating the physical mechanism of multilayer dielectric reflection gratings to achieve 100% diffraction efficiency is extended to offer much deeper insight than before. How different diffraction amplitudes of the top surface corrugation contribute to the −1st-order efficiency of such a grating is shown analytically using a minimum set of real parameters. The two diffraction amplitudes transmitted through the corrugation play a dominant role in enabling DE = 100%. The necessary and sufficient condition for 100% efficiency is derived, and a very simple sufficient condition is also given. Moreover, the role of the reflection phase of the perfect-reflector, including the contribution due to optical path between the corrugation and the reflector, is emphasized.

Abstract:A design method of blazed grating used for frequency division is presented in the paper in detail. A diffraction efficiency equation affecting element function is derived. The influence of longitudinal and transverse technological errors on the diffraction action is studied. The simulation results show that within the range of 8% longitudinal error and 5% transverse relative error, the blazed grating has a good dichroic effect.

Abstract:The discussion on binary subwavelength gratings has recently been increased due to its simple fabrication procedure and potential applications in a variety of optoelectronic fields. Most designs of binary subwavelength gratings have been confined in the way that the grating ridges and/or channels are chirped and the defined grating period does not change during the design process. For some applications (e.g. interconnections), however, a dynamic diffraction pattern may be more desirable. In these cases, the variation of the diffraction angle and/or multiple diffraction beam pattern may be required. Therefor the rearrangement of the grating ridges and/or channels becomes a necessary. The newly arranged profile of the grating ridges and/or channels may be total different from the original one and may need to be changed into another profile later. This paper proposes a design method which optimize the diffraction efficiency at a desired angle and/or optimize the diffraction efficiencies at a multiangle pattern by forming a dynamic 'subperiod' within the initial defined grating period. Some design examples have been provided to prove the design concept.

Abstract:A simple and new system for measuring the diffraction efficiency of large aperture gratings at littrow angle is established in this paper. The reference grating Po, double beams and timer with shutter have been draw into the system for eliminating the impact of polarization and stray light, fluctuation of incident light, and the fatigue of photodetector. A program is designed to scan, measure and calculate the diffraction efficiency of the gratings automatically. The diffraction efficiency accuracy measured for the gratings is increased by similar to 1% with this system. To achieve more measured accuracy, additional beam of reflection light should be imported.

Research on blaze properties of diffraction gratings with vector simulation

Abstract:The blaze properties of diffraction gratings are researched and the diffraction anomalies occurr during the grating diffraction are also analyzed. With the help of the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA), the blaze properties of several typical grating profiles including of the rectangle grating, saw tooth grating and triangle grating in arbitrary incident angle are analyzed, and compares the results with that of the scalar theory. It is found that the polarization is obvious when the wavelength is about 0.5 time period of grating. It is shown that saw tooth grating has brilliant blaze properties that its diffraction efficiency can reach above 90%. Comparing with saw tooth grating, the triangle grating can be fabricated easily and has different blaze wavelengths for the +1st and -1st diffraction order because of its asymmetric structure. Finally the reason of diffraction anomalies, the anomalies wavelength and the diffraction efficiency are researched, which is the theory base to eliminate the diffraction anomalies. The research provides theoretical guidance for grating fabrication to gain high diffraction efficiency.
The Optimization Design of Broadband Mid-Ir Grating

Abstract:The broadband mid-IR grating is required in the infrared spectrophotometer to keep the instrument compact. In this paper the optimization design of a type of broadband grating is studied by the rigorous diffraction grating electromagnetic theory. As a differential vector method, the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) has been widely used for the analysis and the design of diffractive structures. In this paper, firstly, the diffraction efficiency properties of the traditional broadband dual-blaze grating were analyzed by RCWA. Then a simple structure grating with broadband spectrum can be obtained to the dual-blaze grating. It is interesting that the designed grating only had one blazed angle which is more easily to made compared to dual-blaze grating. The optimization grating structure parameters were given. According to our design example of broadband, mid-IR metal grating, the grating with grating period 10.0 mu m and blazed angle 22 degree can obtain more than 80% diffraction efficiency within the whole broadest spectrum 8 similar to 18 mu m. The optimization design result demonstrates this simple structure grating is with broadband spectrum and more easily to produce than the dual-blaze gratings.
Topology optimization of blazed gratings under conical incidence

Abstract:A topology optimization method is presented and applied to a blazed diffraction grating in reflection under conical incidence. This type of gratings is meant to disperse the incident light on one particular diffraction order and this property is fundamental in spectroscopy. Conventionally, a blazed metallic grating is made of a sawtooth profile designed to work with the +/-1st diffraction order in reflection. In this paper, we question this intuitive triangular pattern and look for optimal opto-geometric characteristics using topology optimization based on Finite Element modelling of Maxwell's equations. In practical contexts, the grating geometry is mono-periodic but it is enlightened by a 3D plane wave with a wavevector outside of the plane of invariance. Consequently, this study deals with the resolution of a direct and inverse problem using the Finite Element Method in this intermediate state between 2D and 3D: the so-called conical incidence. A multi-wavelength objective is used in order to obtain a broadband blazed effect. Finally, several numerical experiments are detailed. The results show that it is possible to reach a 98% diffraction efficiency on the -1st diffraction order if the optimization is performed on a single wavelength, and that the reflection integrated over the [400,1500]nm wavelength range can be 29% higher in absolute, 56% in relative, than that of the sawtooth blazed grating when using a multi-wavelength optimization criterion (from 52% to 81%).

Abstract:In this letter, the conventional rigorous coupled-wave analysis method is improved by using the Cayley–Hamilton theorem. Using the proposed method, the forward and backward diffraction efficiencies of each order are solved directly from the eigenmatrix. At the same time, the calculation results of the conventional method, the proposed method, and the CST simulations are in good agreement with each other. The results show that the proposed method has obvious advantages in computational efficiency.
