Abstract:Gratings are key components in many optical systems such as spectrometers. Improving their dispersion is very important for their applications, but improving the single-order diffraction efficiency of an ultrahigh dispersion grating is still very challenging. Here, we propose an analytical approach for the design of a new type of grating named hybrid grating, which consists of a subwavelength grating and a non-subwavelength grating. The proposed analytical approach is based on a physical model in which the non-subwavelength grating acts as an ultrathin reflection grating and the subwavelength grating acts as an antireflection coating. Using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis and the finite-difference time-domain method, we numerically demonstrate that multiple hybrid gratings designed at different wavelengths using the proposed analytical approach show a diffraction efficiency of greater than 95 % in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light, an angular dispersion of greater than 0.8 mrad/nm and a deflection angle of greater than 80 degrees. Furthermore, we numerically demonstrate that by using a combined approach to optimize the parameters of a hybrid grating, the diffraction efficiency in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light can be increased to more than 97 % under the condition that the angular dispersion and the deflection angle of the hybrid grating remain unchanged. Our work provides an avenue for rapid design of gratings with high angular dispersion, large deflection angle and high diffraction efficiency.

Abstract:Based on the extended scalar diffraction theory, the relative diffraction efficiency of any diffraction order is deduced considering the azimuth of incident light (conical diffraction) for transmission and reflection. It is proved that the relative diffraction efficiency formulas are different when using the extended scalar theory for a blazed grating bounded by the plane and medium interface, respectively. However, the optimized depth and blaze wavelength are the same, with corresponding explicit expressions provided. The two relative diffraction efficiency formulas are applied to a blazed grating with specific parameters to compare with rigorous coupled-wave analysis. The results show that the difference between the two formulas is minimal, and both are consistent with the rigorous coupled-wave analysis.

Abstract:The properties of binary blazed grating were theoretically analyzed with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The diffraction efficiencies and diffraction angles of -1, 0, and +1 order for the grating varying with wavelength, grating structure, and the etch depth were studied when the incident angle was 30 degrees. The numerical simulations revealed that the binary blazed grating presented high stability of diffraction efficiencies with wavelength shift.

Abstract:The diffraction efficiency of a general conductor glitter grating is analyzed with electromagnetic field theory under the condition of TE wave incidence. The equation obtained by electromagnetic field theory analysis is simplified and solved with region coupling method. It is found that the diffraction efficiency is related to the grating period.

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of surface roughness on the diffraction efficiency of two-dimensional gratings. Firstly, a roughness model was constructed using FDTD, followed by a significant analysis of the ridge roughness, groove roughness, and sidewall roughness on diffraction efficiency. Then, the impact of each roughness type on diffraction efficiency was studied separately. Results indicate that ridge roughness has a negative impact on diffraction efficiency, whereas groove roughness and sidewall roughness have a positive impact on the diffraction efficiency of two-dimensional gratings. When ridge, groove, and sidewall roughness coexist, diffraction efficiency decreases with an increase in roughness, consistent with previous research. However, under conditions of minimal roughness, diffraction efficiency actually increases. Finally, an experiment was conducted to verify the conclusions. The results of this study have significant reference value for the application and development of precision measurement techniques for gratings.

Abstract:OptiFDTD and Fast Fourier Transform method are used to simulate and analyze the diffracted field of transmission sub-wavelength binary gratings(TSBG).And the influence of grating parameters on the diffraction efficiency is numerically analyzed.The analysis result demonstrates that,for TSBG,the normal incident TE mode beam can be diffracted to the +1st order,the interval number has few influence on diffracted angle,the performance of a TSBG is determined by the grating period,material index and interval number for a given wavelength.

Abstract:To achieve precise energy distribution among light beams diffracted by a rough surface-relief grating in optical pickup heads, we model the grating with a scalar theory. The grating is assumed to be a trapezoid shape with different roughnesses for the top and the bottom surfaces. The model includes rectangle, triangle, and sawtooth shapes as special cases. Using this model, we investigate the influence of grating parameters on diffraction efficiencies and deduce Strehl ratios for different surface roughness values. Abstract:A simple and new system for measuring the diffraction efficiency of large aperture gratings at littrow angle is established in this paper. The reference grating Po, double beams and timer with shutter have been draw into the system for eliminating the impact of polarization and stray light, fluctuation of incident light, and the fatigue of photodetector. A program is designed to scan, measure and calculate the diffraction efficiency of the gratings automatically. The diffraction efficiency accuracy measured for the gratings is increased by similar to 1% with this system. To achieve more measured accuracy, additional beam of reflection light should be imported.

Abstract:The scalar method and vector method were applied in the analysis of color seperation grating of oblique incident wave. This paper checks the effect of color seperation grating when the angle of incident wave changes and tries to give the region of incident angle when the color seperation grating has good effect. The results verify that the color seperation grating can be efficient and can satisfy the ICF system when the angle of indident wave is less than 5°.

Abstract:The analysis of retro-diffraction in Etched Diffraction Grating (EDG) is given in the present paper by using a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method combined with perfectly matched layers (PML) and a periodic boundary condition.This numerical method is more accurate and reliable than other methods such as the ray approximation method or the differential method.Numerical simulation is given for both P-polarized and S-polarized lights.It is shown that the total internal reflection (TIR) structure is effective for high refractive index(e.g.InP) based gratings,but it doesn′t perform well for low refractive index(e.g.silica) based gratings.

Abstract:The electromagnetic theory should be applied to determine the diffraction efficiency of structures whose minimum line width is comparable with wavelength or the grooves are too deep, where scalar theory is no longer useful. The coordinate transformation method (the C method) is a very efficient method for obtaining continuous surface-relief grating efficiency for both TE and TM polarization. The local linear grating model (LLGM) models 2-D circular diffractive lens with combination of a series of local linear gratings. We synthesized and analyzed circular diffractive lens with a continuous profile not as previous authors who always use multi-lever structures. The result is compared with that of scalar theory and analysis using LLGM and rigorous coupled-wave theory. This optimization can be used as a complement of the scalar design of diffractive lens.

Abstract:Based on the incorporation of the structure and the distance of an amplitude grating, we put forward an equation to calculate the Fresnel diffractive field of the grating with an arbitrary opening ratio at any fractional Talbot distance. Because the transmissive function of a phase grating can be regarded as a linear combination of that of amplitude gratings, from above equation for calculating the Fresnel diffractive field of an amplitude grating, we present an analytical equation to calculate the Fresnel diffractive field of an arbitrary multiple phase grating. Using the analytical equation, we can conveniently study the fractional Talbot effect and its application of the arbitrary multiple phase grating. We give a new approach to analyse the Fresnel diffraction of a grating.

Abstract:The limitation of scalar method for diffractive grating is evaluated by comparison with rigorous coupled-wave analysis. The accuracy of scalar method degrades as the grating period decreases or as the etch depth, the refractive index and the incident angle increases, or as the filling factor departs from 50%. The effects of the grating period and the etch depth are most serious , when the grating period is less than 5 times of wavelength or the etch depth is larger than 5 times of wavelength, the scalar method can not be applied to the analysis of DOE(Diffractive Optics Elements). The results are applicable to non-periodic as well as periodic elements.

Abstract:Mathematical formulas are derived for predicting diffraction efficiencies of a grating made on a thick transparent parallel plate (substrate) or cemented between two plates. The formulas are applicable in two situations: (1) when the coherence length of the light source is greater than the thickness of the grating but less than that of the substrate; (2) when the thickness of the substrate is not precisely known, therefore only the average values of the diffraction efficiencies can be expected. There is no limitation on the number of propagating diffraction orders that are present in the system. The derivation uses the concept of energy scattering matrix, therefore it is simpler than a previous method that yielded limited results.

Abstract:According to the vector model theory for rectangular-groove gating, the diffraction efficiency and polarization distribution of incident plane wave with an arbitrary incident direction and polarization were numerically calculated. The calculation results indicate that the diffraction intensity and polarization distribution are dependent on not only the incident direction and the polarization characteristics of incident light, but also the grating structural parameters. The theoretical results are primarily in agreement with the experimental ones.

Abstract:Two models of scalar diffraction theory are discussed. One is the traditional angular spectrum model. The other is a newly constructed model with the integral of optical path difference. Using the angular spectrum model, it is proved that, to obtain the maximum diffractive efficiency, the phase depth of the multilevel grating must be averagely divided. And it is the same with,he width of each level. By means of computer simulating, the difference between the two models is compared. The cause of the difference is also analyzed. Using the new model, an optimized phase depth of the multilevel grating is given. Compared with the results of coupled-wave diffraction theory, the new model is more accurate, than the angular spectrum model.
