Abstract:Generalizing the definitions originally presented by Kuznetsov and Faenzi, we study (possibly non locally free) instanton sheaves of arbitrary rank on Fano threefolds. We classify rank 1 instanton sheaves and describe all curves whose structure sheaves are rank 0 instanton sheaves. In addition, we show that every rank 2 instanton sheaf is an elementary transformation of a locally free instanton sheaf along a rank 0 instanton sheaf. To complete the paper, we describe the moduli space of rank 2 instanton sheaves of charge 2 on a quadric threefold X and show that the full moduli space of rank 2 semistable sheaves on X with Chern classes is connected and contains, besides the instanton component, just one other irreducible component which is also fully described.

Tetrahedron instantons in Donaldson-Thomas theory

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Pomoni-Yan-Zhang in String Theory, we introduce the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons as a Quot scheme and describe it as a moduli space of quiver representations. We construct a virtual fundamental class and virtual structure sheaf à la Oh-Thomas, by which we define K-theoretic invariants. We show that the partition function of such invariants reproduces the one studied by Pomoni-Yan-Zhang, and explicitly determine it, as a product of shifted partition functions of rank one Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the three-dimensional affine space. Our geometric construction answers a series of questions of Pomoni-Yan-Zhang on the geometry of the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons and the behaviour of its partition function, and provides a new application of the recent work of Oh-Thomas.

Abstract:We discuss numerical aspects of instantons in two- and three-dimensional $\phi^4$ theories with an internal $O(N)$ symmetry group, the so-called $N$-vector model. Combining asymptotic transseries expansions for large argument with convergence acceleration techniques, we obtain high-precision values for certain integrals of the instanton that naturally occur in loop corrections around instanton configurations. Knowledge of these numerical properties are necessary in order to evaluate corrections to the large-order factorial growth of perturbation theory in $\phi^4$ theories. The results contribute to the understanding of the mathematical structures underlying the instanton configurations.

Abstract:We investigate rank 3 instanton vector bundles on P3 of charge n and its correspondence with rational curves of degree n+3 . For n=2 , we present a correspondence between stable rank 3 instanton bundles and stable rank 2 reflexive linear sheaves of Chern classes (c1,c2,c3)=(−1,3,3) and we use this correspondence to compute the dimension of the family of stable rank 3 instanton bundles of charge 2. Finally, we use the results above to prove that the moduli space of rank 3 instanton bundles on P3 of charge 2 coincides with the moduli space of rank 3 stable locally free sheaves on P3 of Chern classes (c1,c2,c3)=(0,2,0) . This moduli space is irreducible, has dimension 16 and its generic point corresponds to a generalized't Hooft instanton bundle.

Abstract:We classify -instantons admitting -symmetries, and construct a new family of examples on the spinor bundle of the 3-sphere, equipped with the asymptotically conical, co-homogeneity one -metric of Bryant–Salamon. We also show that outside of the -invariant examples, any other -instanton on this metric with the same asymptotic behaviour must have obstructed deformations.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Abstract:We study the instanton Floer homology for links in $\mathbb{RP}^3$ and compute the second page of Kronheimer--Mrowka's spectral sequence. As an application, we show that Khovanov homology detects the unknot and the projective unknot in $\mathbb{RP}^3$.

Abstract:We study D3-instanton corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space in type IIB string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold. In a previous work, consistency of D3-instantons with S-duality was established at first order in the instanton expansion, using the modular properties of the M5-brane elliptic genus. We extend this analysis to the two-instanton level, where wall-crossing phenomena start playing a role. We focus on the contact potential, an analogue of the Kahler potential which must transform as a modular form under S-duality. We show that it can be expressed in terms of a suitable modification of the partition function of D4-D2-D0 BPS black holes, constructed out of the generating function of MSW invariants (the latter coincide with Donaldson-Thomas invariants in a particular chamber). Modular invariance of the contact potential then requires that, in case where the D3-brane wraps a reducible divisor, the generating function of MSW invariants must transform as a vector-valued mock modular form, with a specific modular completion built from the MSW invariants of the constituents. Physically, this gives a powerful constraint on the degeneracies of BPS black holes. Mathematically, our result gives a universal prediction for the modular properties of Donaldson-Thomas invariants of pure two-dimensional sheaves.

Dimension Reductions in Instanton Theory

Abstract:We study the dimension reduction of instantons over product manifolds with calibrated factors. We first prove an integrability result that relates dimension reduction with curvature conditions. Then we find a topological criterion for bundles over product manifolds to admit instantons that satisfy the aforementioned curvature conditions; in particular, pull-back bundles satisfy this criterion. Consequently, we deduce explicit descriptions for the moduli space of Hermitian Yang--Mills connections, G2-, and Spin(7)-instantons in various contexts, and establish well-behaved compactifications for these moduli spaces when one factor of the product manifold is a hyperkähler surface.

Abstract:On P3, we show that mathematical instantons in characteristic two are unobstructed. We produce upper bounds for the dimension of the moduli space of stable rank two bundles on P3 in characteristic two. In cases where there is a phenomenon of good reduction modulo two, these give similar results in characteristic zero. We also give an example of a non-reduced component of the moduli space in characteristic two.

Abstract:We provide a systematic way of calculating a quiver region associated to a given exceptional collection, which as an application is used to prove that $\mu$-stable sheaves represented by $2$-step complexes are Bridgeland stable. In the later sections, we focus on the case of even rank $2$ instantons over $\mathbb{P}^3$ and $Q_3$ to prove that the instanton sheaves, instanton bundles and perverse instantons are Bridgeland stable and provide a description of the moduli space near their only actual wall.

Abstract:In this paper we explore contributions to non-perturbative superpotentials arising from instantons wrapping effective divisors in smooth Calabi-Yau four-folds. We concentrate on the case of manifolds constructed as complete intersections in products of projective spaces (CICYs) or generalizations thereof (gCICYs). We systematically investigate the structure of the cone of effective (algebraic) divisors in the four-fold geometries and employ the same tools recently developed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1507.03235" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1507.03235">arXiv:1507.03235</a> to construct more general instanton geometries than have previously been considered in the literature. We provide examples of instanton configurations on Calabi-Yau manifolds that are elliptically and $K3$-fibered and explore their consequences in the context of string dualities. The examples discussed include manifolds containing infinite families of divisors with arithmetic genus, $\chi(D, \mathcal O_D)=1$ and superpotentials exhibiting modular symmetry.

Abstract:The index bundle of a family of Dirac operators associated to an instanton on a multi-Taub-NUT space forms a bow representation. We prove that the gauge equivalence classes of solutions of this bow representation are in one-to-one correspondence with the instantons. We also prove that this correspondence establishes an isometry of the bow and instanton moduli spaces.

Abstract:D-instantons are used to probe the near-horizon geometry of D3-branes systems on orbifold spaces. For fractional D3-branes, D-instanton calculus correctly reproduces the gauge beta-function and U(1)_R anomaly of the corresponding N=2 non-conformal Super Yang-Mills theories. For D3-branes wrapping the orbifold singularity, D-instantons can be identified with gauge instantons on ALE space, providing evidence of AdS/CFT duality for gauge theories on curved spaces.

Abstract:We study rank 2 $h$-instanton sheaves on projective threefolds. We demonstrate that any orientable rank 2, non-locally free $h$-instanton sheaf with defect 0 on a threefold can be obtained as an elementary transformation of a locally free $h$-instanton sheaf. Our focus then shifts to ruled Fano threefolds of Picard rank 2 and index 1, of which there are five deformation classes. We establish the existence of orientable rank 2 $h$-instanton bundles on such varieties. Additionally, we prove the existence of Ulrich bundles on such varieties, which correspond to $h$-instanton sheaves of minimum charge.
