Abstract:We study the instanton Floer homology for links in $\mathbb{RP}^3$ and compute the second page of Kronheimer--Mrowka's spectral sequence. As an application, we show that Khovanov homology detects the unknot and the projective unknot in $\mathbb{RP}^3$.

Abstract:We associate several invariants to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere using $SU(2)$ singular instanton gauge theory. There is a space of framed singular connections for such a knot, equipped with a circle action and an equivariant Chern-Simons functional, and our constructions are morally derived from the associated equivariant Morse chain complexes. In particular, we construct a triad of groups analogous to the knot Floer homology package in Heegaard Floer homology, several Frøyshov-type invariants which are concordance invariants, and more. The behavior of our constructions under connected sums are determined. We recover most of Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton homology constructions from our invariants. Finally, the ADHM description of the moduli space of instantons on the 4-sphere can be used to give a concrete characterization of the moduli spaces involved in the invariants of spherical knots, and we demonstrate this point in several examples.

Abstract:This is a companion paper to an earlier work of the authors. In this paper, we provide an axiomatic definition of Floer homology for balanced sutured manifolds and prove that the graded Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm gr}$ of this homology is fully determined by the axioms we proposed. As a result, we conclude that $\chi_{\rm gr}(SHI(M,\gamma))=\chi_{\rm gr}(SFH(M,\gamma))$ for any balanced sutured manifold $(M,\gamma)$. In particular, for any link $L$ in $S^3$, the Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm gr}(KHI(S^3,L))$ recovers the multi-variable Alexander polynomial of $L$, which generalizes the knot case. Combined with the authors' earlier work, we provide more examples of $(1,1)$-knots in lens spaces whose $KHI$ and $\widehat{HFK}$ have the same dimension. Moreover, for a rationally null-homologous knot in a closed oriented 3-manifold $Y$, we construct canonical $\mathbb{Z}_2$-gradings on $KHI(Y,K)$, the decomposition of $I^\sharp(Y)$ discussed in the previous paper, and the minus version of instanton knot homology $\underline{\rm KHI}^-(Y,K)$ introduced by the first author.

Abstract:We show that the knot group of any knot in any integer homology sphere admits a non-abelian representation into $SU(3)$ such that meridians are mapped to matrices whose eigenvalues are the three distinct third roots of unity. This answers the $N=3$ case of a question posed by Xie and the first author. We also characterize when a $PU(3)$-bundle admits a flat connection. The key ingredient in the proofs is a study of the ring structure of $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of $S^1\times \Sigma_g$. In an earlier paper, Xie and the first author stated the so-called eigenvalue conjecture about this ring, and in this paper we partially resolve this conjecture. This allows us to establish a surface decomposition theorem for $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of sutured manifolds, and then obtain the mentioned topological applications. Along the way, we prove a structure theorem for $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants, which is the counterpart of Kronheimer and Mrowka's structure theorem for $U(2)$ Donaldson invariants. We also prove a non-vanishing theorem for the $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants of symplectic manifolds.

Connected sums and directed systems in knot Floer homologies

Abstract:We prove a number of fundamental properties about instanton knot Floer homology. Our arguments rely on general properties of sutured Floer theories and apply also in the Heegaard Floer and monopole Floer settings, where many of our results were already known. Our main result is the connected sum formula for instanton knot Floer homology. An extension of this result proves the oriented skein exact triangle for the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology. Finally, we derive a new model of the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology, which takes the form of a free, finitely generated chain complex over a polynomial ring, as opposed to a direct limit. This construction is new to all of the Floer theories. We explore these results also in the context of Heegaard Floer theory as well.

2-torsion in instanton Floer homology

Abstract:This paper studies the existence of $2$-torsion in instanton Floer homology with $\mathbb{Z}$ coefficients for closed $3$-manifolds and singular knots. First, we show that the non-existence of $2$-torsion in the framed instanton Floer homology $I^\sharp(S_n^3(K);\mathbb{Z})$ of any nonzero integral $n$-surgery along a knot $K$ in $S^3$ would imply that $K$ is fibered. Also, we show that $I^\sharp(S_{r}^3(K);\mathbb{Z})$ for any nontrivial $K$ with $r=1,1/2,1/4$ always has $2$-torsion. These two results indicate that the existence of $2$-torsion is expected to be a generic phenomenon for Dehn surgeries along knots. Second, we show that for genus-one knots with nontrivial Alexander polynomials and for unknotting-number-one knots, the unreduced singular instanton knot homology $I^\sharp(S^3,K;\mathbb{Z})$ always has $2$-torsion. Finally, some crucial lemmas that help us demonstrate the existence of $2$-torsion are motivated by analogous results in Heegaard Floer theory, which may be of independent interest. In particular, we show that, for a knot $K$ in $S^3$, if there is a nonzero rational number $r$ such that the dual knot $\widetilde{K}_r$ inside $S^3_r(K)$ is Floer simple, then $S^3_r(K)$ must be an L-space and $K$ must be an L-space knot.

Abstract:We continue our study of the integer-valued knot invariants $\nu^\sharp(K)$ and $r_0(K)$, which together determine the dimensions of the framed instanton homologies of all nonzero Dehn surgeries on $K$. We first establish a "conjugation" symmetry for the decomposition of cobordism maps constructed in our earlier work, and use this to prove, among many other things, that $\nu^\sharp(K)$ is always either zero or odd. We then apply these technical results to study linear independence in the homology cobordism group, to define an instanton Floer analogue $\epsilon^\sharp(K)$ of Hom's $\epsilon$-invariant in Heegaard Floer homology, and to the problem of characterizing a given 3-manifold as Dehn surgery on a knot in $S^3$.

Abstract:Using instanton Floer theory, extending methods due to Froyshov, we determine the definite lattices that arise from smooth 4-manifolds bounded by certain homology 3-spheres. For example, we show that for +1 surgery on the (2,5) torus knot, the only non-diagonal lattices that can occur are E8 and the indecomposable unimodular definite lattice of rank 12, up to diagonal summands. We require that our 4-manifolds have no 2-torsion in their homology.

Abstract:We define a homological action on sutured instanton Floer homology. This action is well-defined up to scalars, and behaves well under connected sums and sutured manifold decompositions. As an application, we show that instanton knot homology detects link splitting for two-component links.

Abstract:Equivariant singular instanton Floer theory is a framework that associates to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere a suite of homological invariants that are derived from circle-equivariant Morse-Floer theory of a Chern-Simons functional for framed singular $SU(2)$-connections. These invariants generalize the instanton knot homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. In the present work, these constructions are extended from knots to links with non-zero determinant, and several unoriented skein exact triangles are proved in this setting. As a particular case, a categorification of the behavior of the Murasugi signature for links under unoriented skein relations is established. In addition to the exact triangles, Frøyshov-type invariants for links are defined, and several computations using the exact triangles are carried out. The computations suggest a relationship between Heegaard Floer L-space knots and those knots whose instanton-theoretic categorification of the knot signature is supported in even gradings. A main technical contribution of this work is the construction of maps for certain cobordisms between links on which obstructed reducible singular instantons are present. These constructions are inspired by recent work of the first author and Miller Eismeier in the setting of non-singular instanton theory for rational homology 3-spheres.

Abstract:In the early days of the Floer theory, Atiyah asked if there is a Milnor fiber description of the Floer homology of the links of singularities. We answer this question for the Brieskorn-Hamm complete intersection singularities. The resulting combinatorial formulas lead to an independent proof of the equality of the Casson invariants in the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten theories. We use similar techniques to express the Heegaard Floer d-invariant of torus knots in terms of their Milnor fibers.

Abstract:We introduce a new version of symplectic annular Khovanov homology and establish spectral sequences from (i) the symplectic annular Khovanov homology of a knot to the link Floer homology of the lift of the annular axis in the double branched cover; (ii) the symplectic Khovanov homology of a two-periodic knot to the symplectic annular Khovanov homology of its quotient; and (iii) the symplectic Khovanov homology of a strongly invertible knot to the cone of the axis-moving map between the symplectic annular Khovanov homology of the two resolutions of its quotient.

Surgery Exact Triangles in Instanton Theory

Abstract:We prove an exact triangle relating knot instanton Floer homology to the instanton homology of surgeries along the knot. To the author's knowledge, this is the first such result in instanton homology with integer coefficients and has no analogue in Heegaard Floer homology. To illustrate the latter claim, we derive as a consequence of this triangle, building on previous computations in the literature, that the Poincaré Homology Sphere is not an instanton $L$-space with $\mathbb{Z}/2$-coefficients.

Abstract:Building on the work of Nozaki, Sato and Taniguchi, we develop an instanton-theoretic invariant aimed at studying strong corks and equivariant bounding. Our construction utilizes the Chern-Simons filtration and is qualitatively different from previous Floer-theoretic methods used to address these questions. As an application, we give an example of a cork whose boundary involution does not extend over any 4-manifold $X$ with $H_1(X, \mathbb{Z}_2) = 0$ and $b_2(X) \leq 1 $, and a strong cork which survives stabilization by either of $n\smash{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ or $n\smash{\overline{\mathbb{CP}}}^2$. We also prove that every nontrivial linear combination of $1/n$-surgeries on the strongly invertible knot $\smash{\overline{9}_{46}}$ constitutes a strong cork. Although Yang-Mills theory has been used to study corks via the Donaldson invariant, this is the first instance where the critical values of the Chern-Simons functional have been utilized to produce such examples. Finally, we discuss the geography question for nonorientable surfaces in the case of extremal normal Euler number.

Abstract:The paper studies knots in three dimensional projective space. Our technique for this purpose is to associate a virtual link to a link in projective space so that equivalent projective links go to equivalent virtual links (modulo a special flype move). We can then apply techniques in virtual knot theory to obtain a Jones polynomial for projective links that is equivalent to the known Jones polynomial for them and to apply virtual Khovanov homology and the virtual Rasmussen invariant of Dye, Kaestner, and Kauffman to projective links.

On Sp(n)-Instantons and the Fourier-Mukai Transform of Complex Lagrangians

Abstract:The real Fourier-Mukai (RFM) transform relates calibrated graphs to so-called "deformed instantons" on Hermitian line bundles. We show that under the RFM transform, complex Lagrangian graphs in $R^{2n} \times T^{2n}$ correspond to Sp($n$)-instantons over $R^{2n} \times (T^{2n})^*$. In other words, the deformed Sp($n$)-instanton equation coincides with the usual Sp($n$)-instanton equation. Motivated by this observation, we study Sp($n$)-instantons on hyperkahler manifolds $X^{4n}$, with an emphasis on conical singularities. First, when $X = C(M)$ is a hyperkahler cone, we relate Sp($n$)-instantons on $X$ to tri-contact instantons on the 3-Sasakian link $M$ and consider various dimensional reductions. Second, when $X$ is an asymptotically conical (AC) hyperkahler manifold of rate $\nu \leq -\frac{2}{3}(2n+1)$, we prove a Lewis-type theorem to the following effect: If the set of AC Sp($n$)-instantons is non-empty, then every AC Hermitian Yang-Mills connection over $X$ with sufficiently fast decay at infinity is an Sp($n$)-instanton.

Abstract:We define four versions of equivariant instanton Floer homology ($I^+, I^-, I^\infty$ and $\widetilde I$) for a class of 3-manifolds and $SO(3)$-bundles over them including all rational homology spheres. These versions are analogous to the four flavors of monopole and Heegaard Floer homology theories. This construction is functorial for a large class of 4-manifold cobordisms, and agrees with Donaldson's definition of equivariant instanton homology for integer homology spheres. Furthermore, one of our invariants is isomorphic to Floer's instanton homology for admissible bundles, and we calculate $I^\infty$ in all cases it is defined, away from characteristic 2. The appendix, possibly of independent interest, defines an algebraic construction of three equivariant homology theories for dg-modules over a dg-algebra, the equivariant homology $H^+(A,M)$, the coBorel homology $H^-(A,M)$, and the Tate homology $H^\infty(A,M)$. The constructions of the appendix are used to define our invariants.

Abstract:We discuss numerical aspects of instantons in two- and three-dimensional $\phi^4$ theories with an internal $O(N)$ symmetry group, the so-called $N$-vector model. Combining asymptotic transseries expansions for large argument with convergence acceleration techniques, we obtain high-precision values for certain integrals of the instanton that naturally occur in loop corrections around instanton configurations. Knowledge of these numerical properties are necessary in order to evaluate corrections to the large-order factorial growth of perturbation theory in $\phi^4$ theories. The results contribute to the understanding of the mathematical structures underlying the instanton configurations.

Abstract:Using instanton homology with coefficients in $Z/2$ we construct a homomorphism $q_2$ from the homology cobordism group in dimension 3 to the integers which is not a rational linear combination of the instanton $h$--invariant and the Heegaard Floer correction term $d$. If an oriented homology $3$--sphere $Y$ bounds a smooth, compact, negative definite $4$--manifold without $2$--torsion in its homology then $q_2(Y)\ge0$, with strict inequality if the intersection form is non-standard.
