Abstract:We define a homological action on sutured instanton Floer homology. This action is well-defined up to scalars, and behaves well under connected sums and sutured manifold decompositions. As an application, we show that instanton knot homology detects link splitting for two-component links.

Abstract:We prove an excision theorem for the singular instanton Floer homology that allows the excision surfaces to intersect the singular locus. This is an extension of the non-singular excision theorem by Kronheimer and Mrowka and the genus-zero singular excision theorem by Street. We use the singular excision theorem to define an instanton Floer homology theory for sutured manifolds with tangles. As applications, we prove that the annular Khovanov homology (1) detects the unlink, (2) detects the closure of the trivial braid, and (3) distinguishes braid closures from other links; we also prove that the annular instanton Floer homology detects the Thurston norm of meridional surfaces.

Abstract:Suppose H is an admissible Heegaard diagram for a balanced sutured manifold (M,\gamma). We prove that the number of generators of the associated sutured Heegaard Floer complex is an upper bound on the dimension of the sutured instanton homology of (M,\gamma). It follows, in particular, that strong L-spaces are instanton L-spaces.

Abstract:This is a companion paper to an earlier work of the authors. In this paper, we provide an axiomatic definition of Floer homology for balanced sutured manifolds and prove that the graded Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm gr}$ of this homology is fully determined by the axioms we proposed. As a result, we conclude that $\chi_{\rm gr}(SHI(M,\gamma))=\chi_{\rm gr}(SFH(M,\gamma))$ for any balanced sutured manifold $(M,\gamma)$. In particular, for any link $L$ in $S^3$, the Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm gr}(KHI(S^3,L))$ recovers the multi-variable Alexander polynomial of $L$, which generalizes the knot case. Combined with the authors' earlier work, we provide more examples of $(1,1)$-knots in lens spaces whose $KHI$ and $\widehat{HFK}$ have the same dimension. Moreover, for a rationally null-homologous knot in a closed oriented 3-manifold $Y$, we construct canonical $\mathbb{Z}_2$-gradings on $KHI(Y,K)$, the decomposition of $I^\sharp(Y)$ discussed in the previous paper, and the minus version of instanton knot homology $\underline{\rm KHI}^-(Y,K)$ introduced by the first author.

Abstract:We prove a number of fundamental properties about instanton knot Floer homology. Our arguments rely on general properties of sutured Floer theories and apply also in the Heegaard Floer and monopole Floer settings, where many of our results were already known. Our main result is the connected sum formula for instanton knot Floer homology. An extension of this result proves the oriented skein exact triangle for the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology. Finally, we derive a new model of the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology, which takes the form of a free, finitely generated chain complex over a polynomial ring, as opposed to a direct limit. This construction is new to all of the Floer theories. We explore these results also in the context of Heegaard Floer theory as well.

An enhanced Euler characteristic of sutured instanton homology

Abstract:For a balanced sutured manifold $(M,\gamma)$, we construct a decomposition of $SHI(M,\gamma)$ with respect to torsions in $H=H_1(M;\mathbb{Z})$, which generalizes the decomposition of $I^\sharp(Y)$ in previous work of the authors. This decomposition can be regarded as a candidate for the counterpart of the torsion spin$^c$ decompositions in $SFH(M,\gamma)$. Based on this decomposition, we define an enhanced Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm en}(SHI(M,\gamma))\in\mathbb{Z}[H]/\pm H$ and prove that $\chi_{\rm en}(SHI(M,\gamma))=\chi(SFH(M,\gamma))$. This provides a better lower bound on $\dim_\mathbb{C}SHI(M,\gamma)$ than the graded Euler characteristic $\chi_{\rm gr}(SHI(M,\gamma))$. As applications, we prove instanton knot homology detects the unknot in any instanton L-space and show that the conjecture $KHI(Y,K)\cong \widehat{HFK}(Y,K)$ holds for all $(1,1)$-L-space knots and constrained knots in lens spaces, which include all torus knots and many hyperbolic knots in lens spaces.

Equivariant aspects of singular instanton Floer homology

Abstract:We associate several invariants to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere using $SU(2)$ singular instanton gauge theory. There is a space of framed singular connections for such a knot, equipped with a circle action and an equivariant Chern-Simons functional, and our constructions are morally derived from the associated equivariant Morse chain complexes. In particular, we construct a triad of groups analogous to the knot Floer homology package in Heegaard Floer homology, several Frøyshov-type invariants which are concordance invariants, and more. The behavior of our constructions under connected sums are determined. We recover most of Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton homology constructions from our invariants. Finally, the ADHM description of the moduli space of instantons on the 4-sphere can be used to give a concrete characterization of the moduli spaces involved in the invariants of spherical knots, and we demonstrate this point in several examples.

Knot surgery formulae for instanton Floer homology I: the main theorem

Abstract:We prove an integral surgery formula for framed instanton homology $I^\sharp(Y_m(K))$ for any knot $K$ in a $3$-manifold $Y$ with $[K]=0\in H_1(Y;\mathbb{Q})$ and $m\neq 0$. Though the statement is similar to Ozsváth-Szabó's integral surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology, the proof is new and based on sutured instanton homology $SHI$ and the octahedral lemma in the derived category. As a corollary, we obtain an exact triangle between $I^\sharp(Y_m(K))$, $I^\sharp(Y_{m+k}(K))$ and $k$ copies of $I^\sharp(Y)$ for any $m\neq 0$ and large $k$. In the proof of the formula, we discover many new exact triangles for sutured instanton homology and relate some surgery cobordism map to the sum of bypass maps, which are of independent interest. In a companion paper, we derive many applications and computations based on the integral surgery formula.

Abstract:We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopic minimal genus Seifert surfaces for the knot 8_3. A key ingredient for this technique is finding appropriate Heegaard diagrams for the sutured manifold associated to the complement of a Seifert surface.

Decomposing sutured monopole and Instanton Floer homologies

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the work of the second author and prove a grading shifting property, in sutured monopole and instanton Floer theories, for general balanced sutured manifolds. This result has a few consequences. First, we offer an algorithm that computes the Floer homologies of a family of sutured handle-bodies. Second, we obtain a canonical decomposition of sutured monopole and instanton Floer homologies and build polytopes for these two theories, which was initially achieved by Juhász for sutured (Heegaard) Floer homology. Third, we establish a Thurston-norm detection result for monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, which were introduced by Kronheimer and Mrowka. The same result was originally proved by Ozsváth and Szabó for link Floer homology. Last, we generalize the construction of minus versions of monopole and instanton knot Floer homology, which was initially done for knots by the second author, to the case of links. Along with the construction of polytopes, we also proved that, for a balanced sutured manifold with vanishing second homology, the rank of the sutured monopole or instanton Floer homology bounds the depth of the balanced sutured manifold. As a corollary, we obtain an independent proof that monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, as mentioned above, both detect fibred knots in $S^3$. This result was originally achieved by Kronheimer and Mrowka.

Abstract:Using instanton Floer theory, extending methods due to Froyshov, we determine the definite lattices that arise from smooth 4-manifolds bounded by certain homology 3-spheres. For example, we show that for +1 surgery on the (2,5) torus knot, the only non-diagonal lattices that can occur are E8 and the indecomposable unimodular definite lattice of rank 12, up to diagonal summands. We require that our 4-manifolds have no 2-torsion in their homology.

Abstract:Using contact-geometric techniques and sutured Floer homology, we present an alternate formulation of the minus and plus version of knot Floer homology. We further show how natural constructions in the realm of contact geometry give rise to much of the formal structure relating the various versions of Heegaard Floer homology. In addition, to a Legendrian or transverse knot K in a contact manifold (Y,\xi), we associate distinguished classes EHL(K) in the minus-version of knot floer homology and EHIL(K) in the plus version, which are each invariant under Legendrian or transverse isotopies of K. The distinguished class EHL is shown to agree with the Legendrian/transverse invariant defined by Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz, and Szabo despite a strikingly dissimilar definition. While our definitions and constructions only involve sutured Floer homology and contact geometry, the identification of our invariants with known invariants uses bordered sutured Floer homology to make explicit computations of maps between sutured Floer homology groups.

Abstract:This article is a standalone introduction to sutured Floer homology for graduate students in geometry and topology. It is divided into three parts. The first part is an introductory level exposition of Lagrangian Floer homology. The second part is a construction of Heegaard Floer homology as a special, and slightly modified, case of Lagrangian Floer homology. The third part covers the background on sutured manifolds, the definition of sutured Floer homology, as well as a discussion of its most basic properties and implications (it detects the product, behaves nicely under surface decompositions, defines an asymmetric polytope, its Euler characteristic is computable using Fox calculus).

Abstract:We show that the knot group of any knot in any integer homology sphere admits a non-abelian representation into $SU(3)$ such that meridians are mapped to matrices whose eigenvalues are the three distinct third roots of unity. This answers the $N=3$ case of a question posed by Xie and the first author. We also characterize when a $PU(3)$-bundle admits a flat connection. The key ingredient in the proofs is a study of the ring structure of $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of $S^1\times \Sigma_g$. In an earlier paper, Xie and the first author stated the so-called eigenvalue conjecture about this ring, and in this paper we partially resolve this conjecture. This allows us to establish a surface decomposition theorem for $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of sutured manifolds, and then obtain the mentioned topological applications. Along the way, we prove a structure theorem for $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants, which is the counterpart of Kronheimer and Mrowka's structure theorem for $U(2)$ Donaldson invariants. We also prove a non-vanishing theorem for the $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants of symplectic manifolds.

Abstract:We continue our study of the integer-valued knot invariants $\nu^\sharp(K)$ and $r_0(K)$, which together determine the dimensions of the framed instanton homologies of all nonzero Dehn surgeries on $K$. We first establish a "conjugation" symmetry for the decomposition of cobordism maps constructed in our earlier work, and use this to prove, among many other things, that $\nu^\sharp(K)$ is always either zero or odd. We then apply these technical results to study linear independence in the homology cobordism group, to define an instanton Floer analogue $\epsilon^\sharp(K)$ of Hom's $\epsilon$-invariant in Heegaard Floer homology, and to the problem of characterizing a given 3-manifold as Dehn surgery on a knot in $S^3$.

On contact invariants in bordered Floer homology

Abstract:In this paper, we define contact invariants in bordered sutured Floer homology. Given a contact 3-manifold with convex boundary, we apply a result of Zarev (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1010.3496" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1010.3496">arXiv:1010.3496</a>) to derive contact invariants in the bordered sutured modules $\widehat{\mathit{BSA}}$ and $\widehat{\mathit{BSD}}$, as well as in bimodules $\widehat{\mathit{BSAA}},$ $\widehat{\mathit{BSDD}},$ $\widehat{\mathit{BSDA}}$ in the case of two boundary components. In the connected boundary case, our invariants appear to agree with bordered contact invariants defined by Alishahi-Földvári-Hendricks-Licata-Petkova-Vértesi (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2011.08672" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.08672">arXiv:2011.08672</a>) whenever the latter are defined, although ours can be defined in broader contexts. We prove that these invariants satisfy a pairing theorem, which is a bordered extension of the Honda-Kazez-Matić gluing map (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0705.2828" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0705.2828">arXiv:0705.2828</a>) for sutured Floer homology. We also show that there is a correspondence between certain $\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$ operations in bordered type-$A$ modules and bypass attachment maps in sutured Floer homology. As an application, we characterize the Stipsicz-Vértesi map from $\mathit{SFH}$ to $\widehat{\mathit{HFK}}$ as an $\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$ action on $\widehat{\mathit{CFA}}$. We also apply the immersed curve interpretation of Hanselman-Rasmussen-Watson (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1604.03466" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1604.03466">arXiv:1604.03466</a>) to prove results involving contact surgery.

Abstract:In the early days of the Floer theory, Atiyah asked if there is a Milnor fiber description of the Floer homology of the links of singularities. We answer this question for the Brieskorn-Hamm complete intersection singularities. The resulting combinatorial formulas lead to an independent proof of the equality of the Casson invariants in the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten theories. We use similar techniques to express the Heegaard Floer d-invariant of torus knots in terms of their Milnor fibers.

Abstract:We give a new definition of the knot invariant associated to the Lie algebra su_{N+1}. The knot or link must be presented as the plat closure of a braid. The invariant is then a homological intersection pairing between two submanifolds of a configuration space of points in a disk. This generalizes previous work on the Jones polynomial, which is the case N=1.

Abstract:Equivariant singular instanton Floer theory is a framework that associates to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere a suite of homological invariants that are derived from circle-equivariant Morse-Floer theory of a Chern-Simons functional for framed singular $SU(2)$-connections. These invariants generalize the instanton knot homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. In the present work, these constructions are extended from knots to links with non-zero determinant, and several unoriented skein exact triangles are proved in this setting. As a particular case, a categorification of the behavior of the Murasugi signature for links under unoriented skein relations is established. In addition to the exact triangles, Frøyshov-type invariants for links are defined, and several computations using the exact triangles are carried out. The computations suggest a relationship between Heegaard Floer L-space knots and those knots whose instanton-theoretic categorification of the knot signature is supported in even gradings. A main technical contribution of this work is the construction of maps for certain cobordisms between links on which obstructed reducible singular instantons are present. These constructions are inspired by recent work of the first author and Miller Eismeier in the setting of non-singular instanton theory for rational homology 3-spheres.

Abstract:We prove the equivalence of the sutured versions of Heegaard Floer homology, monopole Floer homology, and embedded contact homology. As applications we show that the knot versions of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology are equivalent and that product sutured 3-manifolds are characterized by the fact that they carry an adapted Reeb vector field without periodic orbits.

Abstract:We define a "sutured topological quantum field theory", motivated by the study of sutured Floer homology of product 3-manifolds, and contact elements. We study a rich algebraic structure of suture elements in sutured TQFT, showing that it corresponds to contact elements in sutured Floer homology. We use this approach to make computations of contact elements in sutured Floer homology over $\Z$ of sutured manifolds $(D^2 \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ where $F$ is finite. This generalises previous results of the author over $\Z_2$ coefficients. Our approach elaborates upon the quantum field theoretic aspects of sutured Floer homology, building a non-commutative Fock space, together with a bilinear form deriving from a certain combinatorial partial order; we show that the sutured TQFT of discs is isomorphic to this Fock space.
