Abstract:In this note we discuss a recent proof of the formula for the worldsheet instanton prepotential predicted by Mirror Symmetry for the quintics in P4. One of the key ingredients in the proof is the equivariant cohomology groups on the so-called linear sigma model moduli spaces. We introduce the notion of admissible data on the equivariant cohomology groups of the linear sigma model. An admissible data may be thought of as a sequence of equivariant classes satisfying certain algebraic conditions. It arises naturally from Kontsevich's stable map compactification of moduli spaces of maps from curves into projective manifolds. The structures of admissible data help reduce many counting problems to checking certain combinatorial structure of a compactification. The mirror transformation of Candelas et al turns out to be a transformation between two admissible data associated respectively to the linear and the non-linear sigma models. As an application, we prove the formula for the worldsheet instanton prepotential in terms of hypergeometric series. At the end we also interprete an infinite dimensional transformation group, called the mirror group, acting on admissible data, as a certain duality group of the linear sigma model.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract: Motivated by the recent work of Kachru-Vafa in string theory, we study in Part A of this paper, certain identities involving modular forms, hypergeometric series, and more generally series solutions to Fuchsian equations. The identity which arises in string theory is the simpliest of its kind. There are nontrivial generalizations of the identity which appear new. We give many such examples -- all of which arise in mirror symmetry for algebraic K3 surfaces. In Part B, we study the integrality property of certain $q$-series, known as mirror maps, which arise in mirror symmetry.

Abstract:In this note, we study the integrality property of certain nth roots of the mirror maps of Calabi-Yau manifolds. An example of this has been discovered numerically by physicists recently, and has been used as an important consistency check on their physical computations. Our technique is similar to that used in [6] and [7] namely, Dwork's theory of p-adic hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:We prove the `integrality of Taylor coefficients of mirror maps' conjecture for Greene--Plesser mirror pairs as a natural byproduct of an arithmetic refinement of homological mirror symmetry. We also prove homological mirror symmetry for Greene--Plesser mirror pairs in all characteristics such that the B-side family has good reduction, generalizing work of the fifth author and Smith over the complex numbers. A key technical ingredient is a new versality argument which allows us to work throughout over a Novikov-type ring with integer coefficients.

On the positivity and integrality of coefficients of mirror maps

Abstract:We present natural conjectural generalizations of the `positivity and integrality of mirror maps' phenomenon, encompassing the mirror maps appearing in the Batyrev--Borisov construction of mirror Calabi--Yau complete intersections in Fano toric varieties as a special case. We find that, given the combinatorial data from which one constructs a mirror pair of Calabi--Yau complete intersections, there are two ways of writing down an associated `mirror map': one which is the `true mirror map', meaning the one which appears in mirror symmetry theorems; and one which is the `naive mirror map'. The two are equal under a certain combinatorial criterion which holds e.g. for the quintic threefold, but not in general. We conjecture (based on substantial computer checks, together with proofs under extra hypotheses) that the naive mirror map always has positive integer coefficients, while the true mirror map always has integer (but not necessarily positive) coefficients. Almost all previous works on the integrality of mirror maps concern the naive mirror map, and in particular, only apply to the true mirror map under the combinatorial criterion mentioned above.

Instantons in $ϕ^4$ Theories: Transseries, Virial Theorems and Numerical Aspects

Abstract:We discuss numerical aspects of instantons in two- and three-dimensional $\phi^4$ theories with an internal $O(N)$ symmetry group, the so-called $N$-vector model. Combining asymptotic transseries expansions for large argument with convergence acceleration techniques, we obtain high-precision values for certain integrals of the instanton that naturally occur in loop corrections around instanton configurations. Knowledge of these numerical properties are necessary in order to evaluate corrections to the large-order factorial growth of perturbation theory in $\phi^4$ theories. The results contribute to the understanding of the mathematical structures underlying the instanton configurations.

3d Mirror Symmetry for Instanton Moduli Spaces

Abstract:We prove that the Hilbert scheme of $k$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2$ (Hilb$^k[\mathbb{C}^2]$) is self-dual under three-dimensional mirror symmetry using methods of geometry and integrability. Namely, we demonstrate that the corresponding quantum equivariant K-theory is invariant upon interchanging its Kähler and equivariant parameters as well as inverting the weight of the $\mathbb{C}^\times_\hbar$-action. First, we find a two-parameter family $X_{k,l}$ of self-mirror quiver varieties of type A and study their quantum K-theory algebras. The desired quantum K-theory of Hilb$^k[\mathbb{C}^2]$ is obtained via direct limit $l\to\infty$ and by imposing certain periodic boundary conditions on the quiver data. Throughout the proof, we employ the quantum/classical (q-Langlands) correspondence between XXZ Bethe Ansatz equations and spaces of twisted $\hbar$-opers. In the end, we propose the 3d mirror dual for the moduli spaces of torsion-free rank-$N$ sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$ with the help of a different (three-parametric) family of type A quiver varieties with known mirror dual.

A note on the integrality of mirror maps

Abstract:We give a class of examples of $A$-hypergeometric systems that display integrality of mirror maps. Specifically, these systems have solutions $F(\lambda_1,\dots,\lambda_N) = 1$ and $\log\lambda^l + G(\lambda_1,\dots,\lambda_N)$ (for certain $l\in{\mathbb Z}^N$) such that $\exp G(\lambda)$ has integral coefficients. The proof requires only some elementary congruences.

Abstract:Applying the technique of $p$-adic integration, we prove the topological mirror symmetry conjecture of Hausel-Thaddeus for the moduli spaces of (strongly) parabolic Higgs bundles for the structure groups $\text{SL}_n$ and $\text{PGL}_n$, building on previous work of Groechenig-Wyss-Ziegler on the non-parabolic case. We also prove the $E$-polynomial of the smooth moduli space of parabolic $\text{GL}_n$-Higgs bundles is independent of the degree of the underlying vector bundles.

Refined instanton analysis of the 2D $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model: mass gap, theta dependence, and mirror symmetry

Abstract:We address nonperturbative dynamics of the two-dimensional bosonic and supersymmetric $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ models for general $N$ by developing new tools directly on $\mathbb{R}^2$. The analysis starts with a new formulation of instantons that is consistent with the existence of the classical moduli space, classical dipole--dipole type interactions of instanton--anti-instanton pairs, and vanishing interaction of instanton--instanton pairs. The classical consistency is achieved via a representation of the instanton as a collection of $N$ pointlike constituents carrying pair of real and imaginary charges valued in the weight lattice of $SU(N)$. The constituents interact via a generalized Coulomb interaction and do not violate the fact that instanton is a single lump with integer topological charge. By developing the appropriate Gibbs distribution, we show that the vacuum can be captured by a statistical field theory of these constituents, and their cluster expansion. Contrary to the common belief that instantons do not capture the vacuum structure and non-perturbation properties of such theories, our refined analysis is able to produce properties such as mass gap, theta dependence, and confinement of the theory on $\mathbb{R}^2$. In supersymmetric theory, our construction gives a new derivation of the mirror symmetry between the sigma model and the dual Landau--Ginzburg model by Hori and Vafa. Our construction also demonstrates that there is absolutely no conflict between large $N$ and instantons.

Classical elliptic integrable systems from the moduli space of instantons

Abstract:This paper is intended to serve as a review of a series of papers with Nikita Nekrasov, where we achieved several important results concerning the relation between the moduli space of instantons and classical integrable systems. We derive I. Krichever's Lax matrix for the elliptic Calogero-Moser system from the equivariant cohomology of the moduli space of instantons. This result also has K-theoretic and elliptic cohomology counterparts. Our methods rely upon the so-called $\theta$-transform of the $qq$-characters vev's, defined as integrals of certain classes in these cohomology theories. The key step is the non-commutative Jacobi-like product formula for them. We also obtained a natural answer for the eigenvector of the Lax matrix and the horizontal section for the associated isomonodromic connection in terms of the partition function of folded instantons. As an application of our formula, we demonstrate some progress towards the spectral duality of the many-body systems in question, as well as give a new look at the quantum-classical duality between their trigonometric version and the corresponding spin chains.

On Mirror Symmetry and Irrationality of Zeta Values

Abstract:A fundamental object of study in mirror symmetry of $n$-dimensional Fano varieties is the A-side connection on small quantum cohomology. When the Picard rank is 1, the Borel transform relates the quantum differential operator of the Fano to the Picard-Fuchs operator of the mirror to the associated pencil of anticanonical Calabi-Yau $(n-1)$-folds on the Fano variety. Expanding on related work by W. Yang on the Beukers-Peters pencil of K3 surfaces associated with Apéry's proof for the irrationality of $\zeta(3)$, for such operators we define holomorphic prepotentials, virtual Yukawa couplings, and virtual instanton numbers, analogous to the usual ingredients of Calabi-Yau mirror symmetry. We prove that when the underlying Calabi-Yau operator is modular, the virtual Yukawa coupling is a modular form of weight-$(n+1)$, with the holomorphic prepotential as an Eichler integral. We then analyze the quantum differential operators for modular pencils of K3 surfaces arising as Dolgachev-Nikulin-Pinkham mirrors for the anticanonical linear systems for the 17 deformation classes of Fano threefolds of Picard rank-1 classified by Iskovskikh from the perspective of Golyshev & Zagier's proof of the Gamma conjecture for such Fanos, the natural setting of Yang's work. Here, the virtual instanton numbers are proven to be periodic integers with period equal to the level of the modular subgroup. Finally, we conjecture that the geometric nature of these virtual instanton numbers can be understood in terms of relative genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of the associated log Calabi-Yau pair from the Fano threefold and anticanonical K3.

Abstract:We study D3-instanton corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space in type IIB string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold. In a previous work, consistency of D3-instantons with S-duality was established at first order in the instanton expansion, using the modular properties of the M5-brane elliptic genus. We extend this analysis to the two-instanton level, where wall-crossing phenomena start playing a role. We focus on the contact potential, an analogue of the Kahler potential which must transform as a modular form under S-duality. We show that it can be expressed in terms of a suitable modification of the partition function of D4-D2-D0 BPS black holes, constructed out of the generating function of MSW invariants (the latter coincide with Donaldson-Thomas invariants in a particular chamber). Modular invariance of the contact potential then requires that, in case where the D3-brane wraps a reducible divisor, the generating function of MSW invariants must transform as a vector-valued mock modular form, with a specific modular completion built from the MSW invariants of the constituents. Physically, this gives a powerful constraint on the degeneracies of BPS black holes. Mathematically, our result gives a universal prediction for the modular properties of Donaldson-Thomas invariants of pure two-dimensional sheaves.

Abstract:Friedberg--Jacquet proved that if $\pi$ is a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{A})$, $\pi$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a global zeta integral $Z_H$ over $H = \mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_n$ is non-vanishing on $\pi$. We conjecture a $p$-refined analogue: that any $P$-parahoric $p$-refinement $\tilde\pi^P$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a $P$-twisted version of $Z_H$ is non-vanishing on the $\tilde\pi^P$-eigenspace in $\pi$. This twisted $Z_H$ appears in all constructions of $p$-adic $L$-functions via Shalika models. We prove various results towards the conjecture by connecting it to the study of classical symplectic families in the $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ eigenvariety. If $\pi$ is spherical at $p$, there are $(2n)!$ attached $p$-refinements to Iwahori level; we conjecture the dimensions of such families through each of these, prove the upper bound unconditionally, and (by constructing the families) prove the lower bound under a non-critical slope assumption. For example, for $\mathrm{GL}_4$, we conjecture that (modulo 1-dimensional trivial variation) 8 refinements vary in 2-dimensional symplectic families, 8 in 1-dimensional symplectic families, and prove 8 do not vary in any symplectic family.
