Abstract:This is a mini-review about generalized instantons of noncommutative gauge theories in dimensions 4, 6 and 8, with emphasis on their realizations in type II string theory, their geometric interpretations, and their applications to the enumerative geometry of non-compact toric varieties.

Abstract:We show that the moduli space of the (2,0) and little-string theories compactified on T3 with R-symmetry twists is equal to the moduli space of U(1) instantons on a non-commutative T4. The moduli space of U(q) instantons on a non-commutative T4 is obtained from little-string theories of NS5-branes at Aq−1 singularities with twists. A large class of gauge theories with N=4 SUSY in 2+1D and N=2 SUSY in 3+1D are limiting cases of these theories. Hence, the moduli spaces of these gauge theories can be read off from the moduli spaces of instantons on non-commutative tori. We study the phase transitions in these theories and the action of T-duality. On the purely mathematical side, we give a prediction for the moduli space of two U(1) instantons on a non-commutative T4.

Abstract:We present and discuss BPS instanton solutions that appear in type II string theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. From an effective action point of view these arise as finite action solutions of the Euclidean equations of motion in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to tensor multiplets. As a solution generating technique we make use of the c-map, which produces instanton solutions from either Euclidean black holes or from Taub-NUT like geometries.

Toric gravitational instantons in gauged supergravity

Abstract:We introduce a general class of toric gravitational instantons in $D=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity, namely Euclidean supersymmetric solutions with $U(1)^2$ isometry. Such solutions are specified by a "supergravity labelled polytope", where the labels encode the 4-manifold topology, the choice of magnetic fluxes, and certain signs associated to the Killing spinor. Equivariant localization then allows us to write down the gravitational free energy for such a solution, assuming it exists, and study its properties. These results open the way for a systematic study of holography in this setting, where the dual large $N$ field theories are defined on the boundary 3-manifolds, which are (squashed) lens spaces $L(p,q)$ or generalizations with orbifold singularities.

Abstract:We introduce the coupled instanton equations for a metric, a spinor, a three-form, and a connection on a bundle, over a spin manifold. Special solutions in dimensions $6$ and $7$ arise, respectively, from the Hull--Strominger and the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$ system. The equations are motivated by recent developments in theoretical physics and can be recast using generalized geometry; we investigate how coupled instantons relate to generalized Ricci-flat metrics and also to Killing spinors on a Courant algebroid. We present two open questions regarding how these different geometric conditions are intertwined, for which a positive answer is expected from recent developments in the physics literature by De la Ossa, Larfors and Svanes, and in the mathematics literature on Calabi--Yau manifolds, in recent work by the second-named author with González Molina. We give a complete solution to the first of these problems, providing a new method for the construction of instantons in arbitrary dimensions. For $\operatorname{G}_2$-structures with torsion coupled to $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons, in dimension $7$, we also establish results around the second problem. The last part of the present work carefully studies the approximate solutions to the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$-system constructed by the third and fourth authors on contact Calabi--Yau $7$-manifolds, for which we prove the existence of approximate coupled $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons and generalized Ricci-flat metrics.

G$_2$-instantons on $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups

Abstract:We study the G$_2$-instanton condition for a family of metric connections arisen from the characteristic connection, on $7$-dimensional $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups with left-invariant coclosed G$_2$-structures. According to the dimension of the commutator subgroup, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the connection to be an instanton, in terms of the torsion of the G$_2$-structure, the torsion of the connection and the Lie group structure.Moreover, we show that in our setup, G$_2$-instantons define a naturally reductive structure on the simply connected $2$-step nilpotent Lie group with left-invariant Riemannian metric. Taking quotient by lattices, one obtains G$_2$-instantons on compact nilmanifolds.

$G_2$-instantons on the ALC members of the $\mathbb{B}_7$ family

Abstract:Using co-homogeneity one symmetries, we construct a two-parameter family of non-abelian $G_2$-instantons on every member of the asymptotically locally conical $\mathbb{B}_7$-family of $G_2$-metrics on $S^3 \times \mathbb{R}^4 $, and classify the resulting solutions. These solutions can be described as perturbations of a one-parameter family of abelian instantons, arising from the Killing vector-field generating the asymptotic circle fibre. Generically, these perturbations decay exponentially to the model, but we find a one-parameter family of instantons with polynomial decay. Moreover, we relate the two-parameter family to a lift of an explicit two-parameter family of anti-self-dual instantons on Taub-NUT $\mathbb{R}^4$, fibred over $S^3$ in an adiabatic limit.

Abstract:We construct the exact solution of one (anti-)instanton in $\mathcal{N}=\frac{1}{2}$ super Yang-Mills theory defined on non(anti-)commutative superspace. We first identify $\mathcal{N}=\frac{1}{2}$ superconformal invariance as maximal spacetime symmetry. For the gauge group U(2), the SU(2) part of the solution is given by the standard (anti-)instanton, but the U(1) field strength also turns out to be nonzero. The solution is SO(4) rotationally symmetric. For the gauge group $\mathrm{U}(N),$ in contrast with the U(2) case, we show that the entire $\mathrm{U}(N)$ part of the solution is deformed by non(anti-)commutativity and fermion zero modes. The solution is no longer rotationally symmetric; it is polarized into an axially symmetric configuration because of the underlying non(anti-)commutativity. We compute the ``information metric'' of one (anti-)instanton. We find that the moduli space geometry is deformed from the hyperbolic space ${H}_{5}$ (Euclidean anti--de Sitter space) in a way anticipated from reduced spacetime symmetry. Remarkably, the volume measure of the moduli space turns out to be independent of the non(anti-)commutativity. Implications for D branes in the Ramond-Ramond flux background and the gauge-gravity correspondence are discussed.
Instantons and the Large N=4 Algebra

Abstract:We investigate the differential geometry of the moduli space of instantons on S^3 x S^1. Extending previous results, we show that a sigma-model with this target space can be expected to possess a large N=4 superconformal symmetry, supporting speculations that this sigma-model may be dual to Type IIB superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1. The sigma-model is parametrized by three integers -- the rank of the gauge group, the instanton number, and a "level" (the integer coefficient of a topologically nontrivial B-field, analogous to a WZW level). These integers are expected to correspond to two five-brane charges and a one-brane charge. The sigma-model is weakly coupled when the level, conjecturally corresponding to one of the five-brane changes, becomes very large, keeping the other parameters fixed. The central charges of the large N=4 algebra agree, at least semiclassically, with expectations from the duality.

Abstract:We discuss numerical aspects of instantons in two- and three-dimensional $\phi^4$ theories with an internal $O(N)$ symmetry group, the so-called $N$-vector model. Combining asymptotic transseries expansions for large argument with convergence acceleration techniques, we obtain high-precision values for certain integrals of the instanton that naturally occur in loop corrections around instanton configurations. Knowledge of these numerical properties are necessary in order to evaluate corrections to the large-order factorial growth of perturbation theory in $\phi^4$ theories. The results contribute to the understanding of the mathematical structures underlying the instanton configurations.

Abstract:In this paper we explore contributions to non-perturbative superpotentials arising from instantons wrapping effective divisors in smooth Calabi-Yau four-folds. We concentrate on the case of manifolds constructed as complete intersections in products of projective spaces (CICYs) or generalizations thereof (gCICYs). We systematically investigate the structure of the cone of effective (algebraic) divisors in the four-fold geometries and employ the same tools recently developed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1507.03235" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1507.03235">arXiv:1507.03235</a> to construct more general instanton geometries than have previously been considered in the literature. We provide examples of instanton configurations on Calabi-Yau manifolds that are elliptically and $K3$-fibered and explore their consequences in the context of string dualities. The examples discussed include manifolds containing infinite families of divisors with arithmetic genus, $\chi(D, \mathcal O_D)=1$ and superpotentials exhibiting modular symmetry.

Abstract:The index bundle of a family of Dirac operators associated to an instanton on a multi-Taub-NUT space forms a bow representation. We prove that the gauge equivalence classes of solutions of this bow representation are in one-to-one correspondence with the instantons. We also prove that this correspondence establishes an isometry of the bow and instanton moduli spaces.

Abstract:A family of SO(10) symmetric instanton solutions in type IIB supergravity is developed. The instanton of least action is a candidate for the low-energy, semiclassical approximation to the D=-1 brane. Unlike the solution of Gibbons, Green, and Perry, this admits an interpretation as a tunneling amplitude between perturbatively degenerate asymptotic states, but with an action twice that found previously. A number of associated issues are discussed such as the relation between the magnetic and electric pictures, an inversion symmetry of the dilaton and the metric, the R×S9 topology of the background, and some properties of the solution in an “instanton frame” corresponding to a Lagrangian in which the dilaton’s kinetic energy vanishes.

Instanton Counting and Donaldson-Thomas Theory on Toric Calabi-Yau Four-Orbifolds

Abstract:We study rank $r$ cohomological Donaldson-Thomas theory on a toric Calabi-Yau orbifold of $\mathbb{C}^4$ by a finite abelian subgroup $\mathsf\Gamma$ of $\mathsf{SU}(4)$, from the perspective of instanton counting in cohomological gauge theory on a noncommutative crepant resolution of the quotient singularity. We describe the moduli space of noncommutative instantons on $\mathbb{C}^4/\mathsf{\Gamma}$ and its generalized ADHM parametrization. Using toric localization, we compute the orbifold instanton partition function as a combinatorial series over $r$-vectors of $\mathsf\Gamma$-coloured solid partitions. When the $\mathsf\Gamma$-action fixes an affine line in $\mathbb{C}^4$, we exhibit the dimensional reduction to rank $r$ Donaldson-Thomas theory on the toric Kahler three-orbifold $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathsf{\Gamma}$. Based on this reduction and explicit calculations, we conjecture closed infinite product formulas, in terms of generalized MacMahon functions, for the instanton partition functions on the orbifolds $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_n\times\mathbb{C}^2$ and $\mathbb{C}^3/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2)\times\mathbb{C}$, finding perfect agreement with new mathematical results of Cao, Kool and Monavari.

Abstract:D-instantons are used to probe the near-horizon geometry of D3-branes systems on orbifold spaces. For fractional D3-branes, D-instanton calculus correctly reproduces the gauge beta-function and U(1)_R anomaly of the corresponding N=2 non-conformal Super Yang-Mills theories. For D3-branes wrapping the orbifold singularity, D-instantons can be identified with gauge instantons on ALE space, providing evidence of AdS/CFT duality for gauge theories on curved spaces.

Abstract:We search for an abelian description of the Yang-Mills instantons on certain eight dimensional manifolds with the special holonomies Spin(7) and SU(4). By mimicing the Seiberg-Witten theory in four dimensions, we propose a set of monopole-like equations governing the 8-dimensional U(1) connections and spinors, which are supposed to be the dual theory of the nonabelian instantons. We also give a naive test of the generalized S-duality in the abelian sector of 8-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. Some problems in this approach are pointed out.
Quantized Strings and Instantons in Holography

Abstract:We study worldsheet instantons in holographic type IIA backgrounds directly in string theory. The first background is a dimensional reduction of AdS$_7\times S^4$ and is dual to the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^5$. The second background is AdS$_4\times \mathbf{C}P^3$ dual to ABJM in the type IIA limit. We compute the one-loop partition function of the fundamental string in these backgrounds and show that the result is in exact agreement with field theory predictions. We argue that for higher rank instantons, the string partition function takes a product form of the single instanton partition function times the contribution of two orbifolds on the worldsheet. We determine the orbifold factor to be $n^{-3/2}$ where $n$ is the instanton rank. With this result, we reproduce the series of non-perturbative corrections in $\alpha'$ to the planar $S^5$ free energy. When studying the worldsheet instanton partition function on $\mathbf{C}P^3$, we encounter twelve fermionic and twelve bosonic zero modes. By deforming the ABJM theory, the zero-modes are lifted and consequently the tower of worldsheet instantons can be evaluated and matched to known results in the QFT. As a by-product, we determine a series of higher rank instanton corrections to the free energy of the mass-deformed and orbifolded ABJ(M) theory.

Tetrahedron instantons in Donaldson-Thomas theory

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Pomoni-Yan-Zhang in String Theory, we introduce the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons as a Quot scheme and describe it as a moduli space of quiver representations. We construct a virtual fundamental class and virtual structure sheaf à la Oh-Thomas, by which we define K-theoretic invariants. We show that the partition function of such invariants reproduces the one studied by Pomoni-Yan-Zhang, and explicitly determine it, as a product of shifted partition functions of rank one Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the three-dimensional affine space. Our geometric construction answers a series of questions of Pomoni-Yan-Zhang on the geometry of the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons and the behaviour of its partition function, and provides a new application of the recent work of Oh-Thomas.

Dimension Reductions in Instanton Theory

Abstract:We study the dimension reduction of instantons over product manifolds with calibrated factors. We first prove an integrability result that relates dimension reduction with curvature conditions. Then we find a topological criterion for bundles over product manifolds to admit instantons that satisfy the aforementioned curvature conditions; in particular, pull-back bundles satisfy this criterion. Consequently, we deduce explicit descriptions for the moduli space of Hermitian Yang--Mills connections, G2-, and Spin(7)-instantons in various contexts, and establish well-behaved compactifications for these moduli spaces when one factor of the product manifold is a hyperkähler surface.

Abstract:We classify $G_2$-instantons admitting $SU(2)^3$-symmetries, and construct a new family of examples on the spinor bundle of the 3-sphere, equipped with the asymptotically conical, co-homogeneity one $G_2$-metric of Bryant-Salamon. We also show that, outside of the $SU(2)^3$-invariant examples, any other $G_2$-instanton on this metric with the same asymptotic behaviour must have obstructed deformations.
