Abstract:In its history as an energetic material, porous silicon has demonstrated flame speeds in excess of 3 km s−1, tunable combustion behavior, and high energy output, which in theory makes it a very attractive energetic system. In practice, its application within the field is limited by porous silicon's typical substrate-adhered form and caustic chemical processing requirements that limit how and when porous silicon is made. In this work, we have relieved porous silicon of these constraints by creating reactive silicon quantum dots from free-standing porous silicon films. The resulting material is composed of crystalline silicon nanoparticles with diameters as small as 2 nm that retain the chemical properties of the original films including the SiH2 termination layer. The fabricated silicon particles were characterized using FTIR Spectroscopy, TEM, and EDS for determining the size and the chemical composition. For testing as an energetic material fuel, porous silicon was mixed with an oft used oxidizer, sodium perchlorate. During open-channel combustion tests, silicon quantum dots mixed with sodium perchlorate demonstrated flame speeds over 2.5 km s−1, while bomb calorimetry tests showed an average heat of combustion of 7.4 kJ g−1. These results demonstrate the ability to retain the porous silicon material properties that allow for highly energetic material reactions to occur, despite the additional processing steps to create silicon quantum dots. This opens the door for the use of porous silicon in the bulk of the energetic material application space, much of which was previously limited due to the substrate-attached nature of typical porous silicon.

Abstract:The porous silicon (PS) has gained increasing attentions in fields of nanoenergetic materials because of its especial chemical properties and mesoporous structured property (a large specific surface area: similar to 600m2/g). In this paper, the patterned (PS) films were realized by lithography technique on the polished surface of monocrystal silicon substrates, and the PS nanoenergetic chips (nECs) were created by impregnating the nanoscale pores of PS with ammonium perchlorate under the ultrasonic wave. The combustion of PS nECs was ignited by single pulse laser and the self-sustained burning was recoded by an optical high-speed camera at 20,000 frames per second. Its combustion performance was enhanced by ultrasonic wave in fabrications. Experiment results shown that the radial burning and channel burning were typical stages in combustions of PS nECs. In addition, the igniting energy of pulse laser beams affected the burning properties of PS nECs: the combustion of PS nECs could translate from propellant burning to deflagration with increases of laser beams energy ranged from 0.134mJ to 425mJ. In this work, the diameter of the irradiated spot on the PS nECs was about 700 mu m.. A strong plume of flame was emitted from the surface of PS nECs and this indicated that the potential for PS nECs to be applied as microigniters matrix chips and microthrusters matrix chips.

Abstract:α‐Si3N4 powder was prepared by combustion synthesis method. The propagation characteristics of combustion wave were investigated by thermocouple temperature measurement and "resistance ‐ combustion wave displacement response device". The results show that the combustion reaction takes place in a narrow area, and there is a maximum temperature gradient of 180°C/mm in the combustion front. The "resistance ‐ combustion wave displacement response device" was innovatively used to realize the in‐situ measurement of combustion wave propagation process. The test results showed the pulse combustion mode in which the combustion front took 10s as a cycle, and the quantitative data of Si‐N2 discrete combustion characteristics were obtained for the first time. Combustion Synthesis of Nanosized Β-Sic Powder on a Large Scale

Abstract:Nanosized beta-SiC powder was prepared by combustion synthesis on a large scale, which was carried out in a N-2 atmosphere with silicon powder and carbon black as the reactants. Mechanical activation played an important role in enhancing the reactivity of the reactants, and a higher ball/charge weight ratio and a prolonged activation time were favorable for complete reaction. PTFE was added as a reaction promoter, which remarkably reduced the minimum activation time required for successful combustion synthesis. On the basis of experimental results and thermodynamical calculation, it is proposed that combustion synthesis of SiC in N-2 includes two steps: (1) Si reacts with N-2 to form Si3N4, generating a lot of heat energy; (2) at higher temperatures the initially formed Si3N4 decomposes, and released Si reacts with carbon to produce SiC.
Combustion synthesis of porous β-SiAlON from aluminum ferrosilicon and aluminosilicate hollow microspheres

Abstract:SiAlON ceramics is a unique material used in various applications. Producing porous SiAlON material from available industrial waste by combustion is of great interest. In this work, a porous SiAlON composite was synthesized by the combustion of a mixture of aluminum ferrosilicon powder and aluminosilicate hollow microspheres in nitrogen. Aluminosilicate hollow microspheres were used as a pore-forming agent. The addition of aluminosilicate hollow microspheres to aluminum ferrosilicon powder increased the total porosity from 34.1 to 90.3%, the open porosity from 16.4 to 88.2%, and the maximum pore size from 53 to 413 μm in the final product. The porosity of the synthesized samples was predominantly open.

Abstract:The laminar burning rate, the explosion peak pressure, and the pressure rise coefficient have been measured for the first time for silane-nitrous oxide-argon mixtures using the spherically expanding flame technique in a constant volume combustion chamber. For these three parameters, the values obtained were higher than for hydrogen-nitrous oxide-argon and typical hydrocarbon-based mixtures. A maximum burning rate of 1800 g/m(2) s was measured at 101 kPa, whereas under similar conditions, a maximum burning rate around 950 g/m(2) s has been reported for hydrogen-nitrous oxide-argon mixtures. To better understand the chemical dynamics of flames propagating in SiH4-N2O-Ar mixtures, a detailed reaction model from the literature was improved using collision limit violation analysis and updated thermodynamic properties calculated with a high-level ab initio approach. The reaction model predicts the burning rate within 14% on average but demonstrates error close to 50% for the richest mixtures. The chemistry of the H-O-N system is important under all the conditions presently studied. The chemistry of the Si-H-O-N system demonstrates an increasing importance under rich conditions. In particular, the reactions (i) forming SiOx (s); (ii) describing the interaction of Si-species with N2O; and (iii) involving silicon hydrides, have an important role for the heat release dynamics. The condensed combustion products formed in the silane-nitrous oxide-argon flames were sampled and characterized using electron micrograph, electronic diffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction. For all equivalence ratios, silica spherical particles with a mean diameter in the range 200-300 nm were observed. In addition, for mixtures with phi >= 2.2, silicon nanowires were formed. X-ray diffraction experiments showed that the silicon nanowires are composed of metal silicon characterized by a cubic structure (lattice parameter: a = 5.425 angstrom) with the Fm-3m space group. Abstract:Journal of Applied Physics, Volume 131, Issue 17, May 2022. Detonation synthesis of silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles from carbon liberated by negatively oxygen balanced explosives was evaluated in a 23 factorial design to determine the effects of three categorical experimental factors: (1) cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX)/2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) ratio, (2) silicon (Si) additive concentration, and (3) Si particle size. These factors were evaluated at low and high levels as they relate to the detonation performance of the explosive and the solid Si-containing phases produced. Detonation velocity and Chapman–Jouguet (C–J) detonation pressure, which were measured using rate stick plate dent tests, were evaluated. Solid detonation product mass, silicon carbide product concentration, and residual silicon concentration were evaluated using the x-ray diffraction analysis. The factors of Si concentration and the RDX:TNT ratio were shown to affect detonation performance in terms of detonation velocity and C–J pressure by up to 10% and 22%, respectively. Increased concentration of Si in the reactants improved the average SiC concentration in the detonation products from 1.9 to 2.8 wt. %. Similarly, increasing the ratio of RDX to TNT further oxidized detonation products and reduced the average residual Si remaining after detonation from 8.6 to 2.8 wt. %. A 70:30 mass ratio mixture of RDX to TNT loaded with 10 wt. % < 44 μm silicon powder produced an estimated 1.33 g of nanocrystalline cubic silicon carbide from a 150-g test charge. Using a lower concentration of added silicon with a finer particle size reduced SiC yield in the residue to 0.38 g yet improved the SiC to residual Si ratio to 1.64:1.

Abstract:Nano Silicon (Si) powder has become a new type of solid fuel in recent years because of its high energy density, large gas production, and low agglomeration behavior. Optimizing and improving its energy release performance is an important challenge. In this paper, DAP-4, an energetic molecular perovskite material with high energy and strong oxidation, was introduced as the oxidant to prepare DAP-4/Si composites, and its combustion properties were studied. The thermal decomposition, combustion performance, as well as their combustion product properties, were studied. The results showed the thermal decomposition properties of DAP-4/Si composites still keep stable (>370 °C), and the combustion properties of DAP-4/Si composites first increase with Si content and then reduced. It was confirmed that DAP-4/Si with the ratio of 6.5:3.5–6:4 had a better burning intensity than the other ratios. The combustion mechanism of DAP-4/Si composites was proposed based on the ignition and combustion characteristics of DAP-4/Si composites. This work may provide a further reference for the application of DAP-4 into solid propellant formulation.

Abstract:In this work, Si@NC/AP and Si@PVDF/CL-20 composites with different Si contents have been fabricated by spray-drying technique. The flame structure, ignition delay time and combustion process have been investigated. It has been shown that the ignition delay of Si-based fuel with 40 wt% of Si is the shortest. This means that oxygen balance and the catalytic effect of Si on the energetic composites are playing a dominant role during the combustion processes of these composites. The solid composite propellants (SCP, named as SCP-1 and SCP-2) contains two typical Si-based composites Si-80@NC/AP and Si-80@PVDF/CL-20 have been prepared for propellant applications. Their propellants containing the corresponding mechanical mixtures (named as SCP-3 and SCP-4) have been fabricated as a comparison. It has been observed that the cross sections of propellants containing Si-based composites are denser than that of the reference propellants. The burn rate of SCP-1 (with Si-80@NC/AP) and SCP-2 (with Si-80@PVDF/CL-20) are 5.74 and 5.10 mm s−1 at 2.0 MPa, respectively, which are lower than those of the reference samples SCP-3 (6.51 mm s−1) and SCP-4 (5.70 mm s−1). However, the pressure exponent of former is slightly lower than that of the latter. Moreover, the combustion products (CCPs) of SCP-1 and SCP-3 are more fluffy and smaller in particles size than those of SCP-2 and SCP-4. This indicates that the core-shell structured composites have much better combustion performances due to better heat and mass transfer between the oxidizers and Si as fuel.

Abstract:Experimental dependences of burning rate of powder and granulated mixtures 5Ti + 3Si, Ti + C , (Ti + C + 20% Cu, (Ti + C + 20% Ni, and Ti + C (with amorphous carbon in the form of soot and crystalline carbon in the form of graphite) on titanium particle size are discussed using different models of combustion front propagation in a condensed medium for the first time. Within the framework of the theory of gasless combustion (with and without account for the mechanism of capillary spreading), microheterogeneous models do not even qualitatively explain the difference in the dependences of the burning rate on the size of titanium particles for powder mixtures of titanium with soot and with graphite or an increase in the burning rate of Ti + C powder mixtures when diluted with nickel and copper, accompanied by a drop in combustion temperature. The restructuring of the medium (granulation of powder mixtures) changes burning rate without changing the phase composition of the synthesis products. Within the framework of the convective–conductive combustion model, all these results are explained uniformly by the inhibitory effect of impurity gases released ahead of the combustion front in powder mixtures with fulfillment of heating conditions of the component particles. The effect of impurity gas release on the burning rate of powder mixtures can be estimated for each composition by the difference in the burning rates of granulated and powder samples. For all the granulated mixtures studied, where the effect of impurity gases on burning rate is leveled, the analytical approximation of the experimental dependence of burning rate on titanium particle size shows qualitative agreement with the dependence that follows from the convective–conductive combustion model.

Abstract:Explosives combustion is primarily classified into conductive and convective combustion. In situations where confinement is sufficiently strong, the instantaneous high pressure generated by convective combustion in cracks can cause rapid fragmentation of the explosive matrix, resulting in a significant increase in the combustion surface area and triggering a high-intensity reaction with potentially catastrophic consequences. Therefore, the study of convective combustion in cracks is crucial for ensuring the safety of weapons and explosives. Previous simulation studies have primarily used finite element analysis software, which has excellent performance in handling explosive detonation processes. However, its accuracy in describing gas behavior between explosives and constrained containers is limited. This study divides the combustion process of a pre-cracked explosive in a confined space into four stages based on reasonable assumptions and simplifications. We developed a simulation method that combines the Arrhenius formula with the MWSD model to model the combustion rate of the explosive. By introducing a correction coefficient, Con, to the Arrhenius formula, the formula and MWSD model control the first and third stages of explosive combustion, respectively, while smoothly transitioning during the second stage. We used this method to numerically simulate the experimental results of Shang Hailin et al. on a crack width of 50 μm. The simulation results include the temperature field and pressure field of the first three stages of explosive combustion and the pressure rise curve of the pressure measurement point at the same location, as in the experiment. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:A combination of water and aluminum powder has been studied for space propulsion. These propellants are particularly suitable for chemical micropropulsion. However, development is being delayed due to many constraints, mainly: safety requirements and system restrictions. This study measured the combustion pressure and reacted aluminum fraction of pulsed combustion using water vapor and aluminum powder under conditions that satisfy the following constraints: water vapor pressure under 100 kPa, aluminum powder diameter over 10 µm, and a combustion chamber smaller than 1 L. In the experimental combustion chamber, the water vapor flow had a mass flow rate of 23.3 mg/s and a velocity of 1.6 m/s. The aluminum powder was lifted and mixed with the nitrogen gas and injected into the water vapor flow and ignited by a spark. The result was organized using an oxidizer-to-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber. When the ratio was around 0.5, the maximum pressure and reacted aluminum fraction marked significant values for micropropulsion: 191.6–313.4 kPa and 0.18–0.36, respectively. The results revealed that the nitrogen gas promoted combustion by diffusing the powder rather than suppressing it, and the importance of the controlling powder diffusion and the ignition timing.

Abstract:In thermal powered direct blow coal powder manufacturing at high-temperatures, the mechanism and key parameters of the spontaneous combustion of coal powder are not clear, which makes the prevention of such spontaneous combustion difficult. Therefore, the spontaneous combustion of coal powder for different oxygen concentrations (oxygen concentrations of 5, 7, 9, 13, 17, 21%) and volumes (21, 200, 300, 400, and 500 cm3) in a high-temperature environment was studied experimentally by the physical similarity simulated experimental appliance. The results indicate that when the oxygen concentration in the coal powders from the LHG sample (Liuhuanggou mine coal sample) and Hongliu mine coal sample (HL sample) samples was higher than 13% and 9%, respectively, the temperature of the center-point rises rapidly beyond other conditions. As the temperature increases, the concentrations of the CO and C2H4 gases increase gradually and the CO/CO2 ratio increases exponentially. However, the C2H4/C2H6 ratio is unstable when the temperature is lower than 180°C, beyond which it gradually increases. The minimum ignition temperature of the coal powder increases gradually with the decrease in the oxygen concentration, and the ignition delay time is also prolonged considerably.

Abstract:The combustion synthesis products in titanium, silicon and aluminum powder mixtures under the wave mode combustion are investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and optical metallography. The synthesis products contain titanium silicide Ti5Si3 and titanium aluminide TiAl3, the ratio of which depends on the content of aluminum powder in the reaction mixtures. The combustion temperature of the mixtures decreases with an increase in the aluminum content. This is a consequence of the substitution of titanium aluminide in the synthesis products for titanium silicide, which has a multiple negative formation enthalpy compared to that of the silicide. Using ideas about the features of the growth of silicide and aluminide nuclei in a liquid metal solution, the effect of the combustion temperature on the dispersion of the structure of the synthesis products is discussed.

Abstract:Passive explosion suppression remains an indispensable auxiliary method for gas explosion suppression due to its low cost. To explore a new type of explosion passive suppression technology, three rectangular cavities with different width-diameter ratios were designed and laid in a large-scale methane/air explosion experiment system, and its explosion suppression performance was evaluated by measuring the changes in the explosion flame and shock wave before and after passing through the cavity. The results show that the suppression effect of the cavity is affected by its width. The larger the width-diameter ratio, the faster the attenuation of the flame and shock wave. The cavity-combined aluminum hydroxide powder effectively improves the suppression effect. When the filling amount of the powder is 140 g, the flame is quenched. However, there is an optimal powder filling degree for the suppression of the shock wave in the limited space of the cavity. In the test range, the maximum decay rate of the overpressure and impulse are 49.4 and 39.4%, respectively. This study can provide theoretical guidelines for the suppression of gas explosion.

Abstract:This study investigated the combustion characteristics of low calorific gas in silicon carbide (SiC) foam. The temperature distribution, reaction zone, maximum temperature, and combustion wave propagation velocity were analysed at different inlet velocities, equivalence ratios of premixed gases, and pore densities. The temperature distribution near the reaction zone was determined by a time-based method. Super-adiabatic combustion was obtained in porous media under different conditions. The experimental results showed that higher temperatures were obtained in SiC foams of 30 pores per inch (PPI) than those measured for foam of 20 PPI. Increased equivalence ratio of premixed gases and pore density led to a thicker reaction zone and a higher preheating efficiency in the preheating zone. The combustion wave propagation velocity, which was less than 2mm/s under these experimental conditions, was increased with increased inlet velocity and decreased equivalence ratio of premixed gases. The combustion wave propagation in foams of 20 PPI had the lowest velocity because of the good match of convection and radiation.

Abstract:Alpha phase silicon nitride (α-Si3N4) powders were synthesized by combustion reaction of the in-situ nano-SiO2 coated Si and Si3N4 reactants with pressurized nitrogen. The combustion temperature profile as well as the product phase composition and morphology were investigated. Regardless of the combustion temperature reached as high as 1800 °C, up to 86 wt% α-Si3N4 was obtained in the combustion-synthesized product from the reactants with only 6 wt% SiO2 addition, which is three times higher than that of without SiO2 coating, meanwhile, the morphology of Si3N4 grains changed from rod-like to equiaxed grain,indicating the in-situ coated SiO2 tailored the nitridation reaction path of Si successfully by enhancing the silicon monoxide (SiO) gas phase formation.

Abstract:Energetic porous fuels are attractive for their high reactivity. In this study, porous silicon/aluminum–silicon (pSi/AlSi@pSi) powders were prepared via dealloying Al-Si alloy. Results demonstrate that pSi and AlSi@pSi with evenly distributed pores and tailorable porosity were obtained. AlSi@pSi shows a core–shell structure with Al-Si alloy core and porous Si shell. Thermal properties indicate that consistent with its core–shell structure, the oxidation of AlSi@pSi can be considered as a combination of pSi and Al-Si alloy. The main oxidation is kicked in by the reaction of the Al-Si alloy core, followed by the intense reaction of the porous Si shell. The combustion characterization demonstrates that the dramatically improved reactivity of porous samples is attributed to the ultra-high kinetics of porous Si outperforming nano-sized aluminum (n-Al). The shorter ignition delay and combustion duration of porous samples than Al-Si alloy and n-Al result from the lower apparent activation energy (E 0 ) and the low initiation oxidation temperature for porous Si. The different oxidation processes for AlSi@pSi under thermal oxidation and combustion owe to the high oxidation peak temperature and low E 0 of porous Si. Above all, the prepared porous fuels with tailorable porosity and superior reactivity than n-Al are promising fuels in energetic materials.

Abstract:Silica aerogels were prepared by the sol-gel method,then use the magnesiothermic reduction reaction to produce nanoporous silicon.And nanoporous silicon/NaClO4 composite were prepared.The component and structure of nanoporous silicon were characterized by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),energy dispersive X-ray(EDX),the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) method surface area analysis.The thermal performance and ignition properties of nanoporous silicon/NaClO4 composites were studied by thermal gravimeteic analysis and high-speed camera.Results show that different crystalline nanoporous silicon can be prepared by modifying the temperature at lower temperature(≤650℃),which has sponge-like mesoporous structure with three-dimensional irregular network,uniform pore size of about 10nm,larger specific surface area up to 820.7 m2/g.In an inert atmosphere nanoporous,nanoporous silicon/NaClO4 composite decomposes at about 510℃,and can be ignited with heat stimulation energy by baking on the surface of hot plate under no restrict condition,and formed typically a mushroom cloud flame.
