Abstract:In order to improve activity and acid-resistance of hydrogenationcatalysts, a series of nickel-based catalysts doped with Fe, Mn, Mo and supported by NaBH4-reduced activated carbon (AC-NaBH4) were prepared via an incipient wetness method. They were applied for the hydrogenation of phthalic anhydride, levulinic acid, maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride and trimellitic anhydride. The results show that the Fe doped catalyst containing 5%(wt) Fe and 15%(wt) Ni (5Fe-15Ni/AC-NaBH4) has satisfactory activity and stability, which can be attributed to the hydrophobic surface of AC-NaBH4 that prevents the resulted water from contacting metal surface. This makes the decrease of H+ concentration which eventually reduces Ni corrosion. Furthermore, XRD and TEM analysis prove the formation of Fe-Ni alloy, which is beneficial to the disperse of nickel particles and can effectively inhibit nickel corrosion.

Abstract:The preparation method of porous carbon coated honeycomb ceramic monolithic catalysts is limited to tradi-tional ideas. The porous carbon and the active metal particles are formed step by step. We have designed a novel preparation method and constructed a series of nickel-embedded porous carbon-coated (Ni@C) monolithic catalysts with different carbonization temperatures. Through the synchronous formation of porous carbon and active metal particles, the relationship between porous carbon and metal is changed from "supported " to "embedded ". The "embedded " structure between nickel particles and porous carbon formed at suitable carbonization temperature is an inseparable whole. Correlation characterization results show that the "embedded " structure has not changed the physical-chemical properties of porous carbon. However, the effect on the physical-chemical properties of nickel particles is very significant. Compared with conventional supported nickel-based monolithic catalysts (NiO/C), embedded nickel particles in the Ni@C monolithic catalyst have four characteristics. They are more uniform particle dispersion, smaller average particle size, more difficult to migrate and stable in metallic Ni0 form in air. Based on these advantages, Ni@C monolithic catalysts show better catalytic activity, stability and convenience in the continuous catalytic hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds.

Abstract:N-doped carbon possesses the advantages of electronic modification and immobilization of metal nanoparticles. Hence, N-doped carbon-based metal catalysts have received extensive attention. This study prepared uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles (24.0 wt%) on porous N-doped carbon, which was fabricated via the high temperature pyrolysis of nitrogen-rich ZnNi MOFs with 1H-1,2,3-triazole as the ligand. The 1H-1,2,3-triazole as a high energy ligand could volatilize violently to form a N-doped macroporous carbon-based structure. Zn acted as a fence and prevented the accumulation of Ni during the pyrolysis of ZnNi MOFs. The synergistic effect from the abundant porous structure together with uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles proves the excellent catalytic activity toward the hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene, showing 100% DCPD conversion and >99% THDCPD selectivity.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) is one of the pivotal processes in the production of green high-energy-density liquid hydrocarbon fuels, jet propellent-10 (JP-10). However, the high dependency of the current catalysts on high temperature and pressure, whether the non-noble (>120 °C, >15 bar) or even the noble catalyst (80 °C, >7.6 bar), leads to enormous energy consumption and technical challenges in environment and sustainable development. Herein, we prepared a carbon layer wrapped Ni nanoparticles/g-C 3 N 4 catalyst (/g-C 3 N 4 ) derived from the in-situ-formed Ni-MOF/g-C 3 N 4 composite. Benefiting from the 53.2 wt% small-sized Ni nanoparticles and nanosheet structure, resulting in high-density accessible active sites (5.38 × 10 20 sites g −1 ) and the mass transfer enhancement, /g-C 3 N 4 achieved DCPD hydrogenation under ambient conditions. > 99.9 % DCPD conversion and 98.1 % endo -tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene yield was obtained at 30 °C, 1 bar, significantly outperforming the benchmark 5 % Pd/C. To the best of our knowledge, it's the mildest condition for DCPD hydrogenation. Further, comprehensive mechanistic insights were gained from combining means of kinetic investigations, in situ characterization, and theoretical calculations. The discrimination result of 27 kinetic models indicated that DCPD hydrogenation followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Haugen-Watson formulism regarding the reaction between the chemisorbed dihydrodicyclopentadiene (DHDCPD) and dissociatively adsorbed hydrogen as the rate-determining step. In-situ DRIFTS confirm that the norbornene ring is preferentially adsorbed and hydrogenated. The DFT calculations further substantiate the hydrogenation pathway. The present work provides guidance for the development of highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts and opens up an environmental-friendly and economically viable avenue for DCPD hydrogenation.

Abstract:A novel pomegranate-like Ni-NSs@MSNSs nanocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a modified Stöber method, and its application in the hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) was firstly reported. The Ni-NSs@MSNSs possessed a high specific area (658 m2/g) and mesoporous structure (1.7-3.3 nm). The reaction of hydrogenation of DCPD to endo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (endo-THDCPD) was used to evaluate the catalytic performance of the prepared materials. The distinctive pomegranate-like Ni-NSs@MSNSs core-shell nanocomposite exhibited superior catalytic activity (TOF = 106.0 h-1 and STY = 112.7 g·L-1·h-1) and selectivity (98.9%) than conventional Ni-based catalysts (experimental conditions: Ni/DCPD/cyclohexane = 1/100/1000 (w/w), 150 °C, and 2.5 MPa). Moreover, the Ni-NSs@MSNSs nanocatalyst could be rapidly and conveniently recycled by magnetic separation without appreciable loss. The Ni-NSs@MSNSs also exhibited excellent thermal stability (≥750 °C) and good recycling performance (without an activity and selectivity decrease in four runs). The superior application performance of the Ni-NSs@MSNSs nanocatalyst was mainly owing to its unique pomegranate-like structure and core-shell synergistic confinement effect.

Abstract:Preparation and catalytic performance of skeletal Ni catalysts supported on Al2O3 were studied. The effects of alloy powder/pseudo-boehmite powder mass ratios and calcination temperatures of precursors on surface properties, compressive strength and catalytic performance were investigated. It was found that catalysts prepared by precursors which were molded with alloy powder/pseudo-boehmite powder mass ratio of 4/6 and calcinated at 860°C in air atmosphere exhibited excellent compressive strength (16.11N/mm), high dicyclopentadiene conversion (>95%) and appropriate THDCPD selectivity (>50%) during 1000-hour evaluation. The operational conditions were obtained as following: T=120°C, P=2.0MPa, LSHV=2.0h−1 and hydrogen–oil ratio=300:1.

Abstract:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are considered as promising candidates for large-scale hydrogen storage, which offers significant advantages in terms of hydrogen storage density, ease of storage and transportation. NPhCZ (N-phenylcarbazole)/18H-NPhCZ (perhydro-N-phenylcarbazole) is proposed as a typical system with high hydrogen storage capacity. However, low dehydrogenation activity and selectivity of catalysts restrict the cyclic efficiency of hydrogen storage. In this study, the efficient catalysts are designed by the immobilization of ultrafine, highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles onto Ni, N co-doped carbon materials through wet chemical reduction. The Pd/Ni@NC-10 catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic performance with 100 % conversion, 81.9 % selectivity of NPhCZ and 6.48 wt% hydrogen release amount. Combined with XRD, HRTEM, Raman, XPS, H2-TPR, 2-TPR, N2 2 physisorption characterization methods and DFT calculations, it is found that the doped Ni, N species could synergistically increase the dispersion of loaded Pd nanoparticles, as well as regulate the electronic state around Pd, which in turn accelerates the rate of the rate-limiting step. The evident interaction between Pd nanoparticles and Ni, N co-doped carbon brings the enhancement of dehydrogenation efficiency. Besides, the spent catalysts are measured by XRD, TEM, XPS and evaluated for the dehydrogenation reaction, indicating that Pd/Ni@NC-10 shows good structural stability, durability and recyclability. It provides practical guidance for the design of LOHCs dehydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Modulating the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts is considered an effective way to boost the electrocatalytic activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, a novel electrocatalyst comprising high-density low-coordination Ni single atoms anchored on Ni-embedded nanoporous carbon nanotubes (Ni-N-C/Ni@CNT-H) is constructed through a self-template assisted synthetic strategy. We demonstrate that the in situ generated AlN nanoparticles not only serve as the template for the formation of the nanoporous structure, but also contribute to the coordination between Ni and N atoms. Benefiting from the optimized charge distribution and hydrogen adsorption free energy of the unsaturated Ni-N-2 active structure and nanoporous structure of the carbon nanotube substrate, the resultant Ni-N-C/Ni@CNT-H exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with a low overpotential of 175 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and a long-term durability for over 160 h in continuous operation. This work provides a new insight and approach to the design and synthesis of efficient single-atom electrocatalysts toward hydrogen fuel production.

Abstract:Developing more effective catalysts for the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) process has gained more importance in recent decades to produce ultraclean fuel. In the current study, a novel carbon covered alumina (CCA) was prepared as a support for the Ni2P catalyst for the HDS reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The prepared composites were characterized by using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic activity of the Ni2P catalysts supported on carbon covered alumina (CCA) was tested and compared with the Ni2P catalysts supported on alumina. As compared to Ni2P/CCA0 (72.1%), the DBT conversion of Ni2P/CCA3 (96.2%) had an increase by 24.1%. The incorporation of carbon could increase the catalytic activity by promoting the formation of active Ni2P phase without AlPO4 and leading to the better dispersion of Ni2P on the surface of support. And the BP selectivity was slightly enhanced after the introduction of carbon layer.

Abstract:Catalytic decomposition of the hydrogen-rich hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4·H2O) represents a promising hydrogen storage/production technology. A rational design of advanced N2H4·H2O decomposition catalysts requires an overall consideration of intrinsic activity, number, and accessibility of active sites. We herein report the synthesis of a hierarchically nanostructured NiPt/N-doped carbon catalyst using a three-step method that can simultaneously address these issues. The chelation of metal precursors with polydopamine and thermolysis of the resulting complexes under reductive atmosphere resulted in a concurrent formation of N-doped carbon substrate and catalytically active NiPt alloy nanoparticles. Thanks to the usage of a silica nanosphere template and dopamine precursor, the N-doped carbon substrate possesses a hierarchical macroporous-mesoporous architecture. This, together with the uniform dispersion of tiny NiPt nanoparticles on the carbon substrate, offers opportunity for creating abundant and accessible active sites. Benefiting from these favorable attributes, the NiPt/N-doped carbon catalyst enables a complete and rapid hydrogen production from alkaline N2H4·H2O solution with a rate of 1602 h-1 at 50 °C, which outperforms most existing catalysts for N2H4·H2O decomposition.

Abstract:Hydrogenated dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) resin has been aroused widely concerned with developing of polymer material science. Due to its cross-linked molecular structure, large steric hindrance, and high activation energy of unsaturated bonds, the design of hydrogenation catalyst with fine structure, high activity, and excellent stability poses great challenges. Herein, basing on the concept of strong metal support interaction, supported palladium catalyst (Pd-MgAlO-HT) derived from thermal decomposition of hydrotalcite-like compound has been synthesized and the related chemical processing conditions have been optimized in a stainless autoclave at 150−270 °C, 1−9 MPa H2 pressure and 0.5−6 h reaction time. The optimal product shows colorless transparent with a degree of hydrogenation over 96.5 %. As comparing with Pd/MgAlO-IM catalyst prepared by conventional impregnation method, the Pd-MgAlO-HT catalyst presents higher activity and stability for DCPD resin hydrogenation. Combined with the XRD, TEM, H2-TPR analysis results, the enhanced catalytic performance of Pd-MgAlO-HT catalyst could ascribe to the small particle size, high dispersion of Pd particles and strong metal support interaction between Pd species and the support.

Abstract:The selection and pretreatment of the support generally have a significant effect on the catalytic performance of the supported catalysts, since the dispersity and chemical state of the supported metal species can be remarkably altered by the support. Here we reported a Ni-catalyst supported on H2O2 modified nanodiamonds (ND) which showed a much improved catalytic activity and stability for phenol hydrogenation reaction than the other two catalysts with untreated ND and high temperature N2 treated ND as supports, respectively. It was found the interaction between the ND support and nickel species was enhanced by the simple H2O2 pretreatment while retainingthe excellent structural stability of the ND. Under the effect of these factors, the nickel species are stabilized on the support surface with a small particle size even after high temperature treatment, accounting for the improved catalytic performance of the catalyst. This study highlights the importance of support selection and pretreatment, and provides new ideas for the design and development of supported catalysts.

Abstract:Integration of different active sites into metallic catalysts, which may impart new properties and functionalities, is desirable yet challenging. Herein, a novel dealloying strategy is demonstrated to decorate nickel-aluminum layered double hydroxide (NiAl-LDH) onto a Pt-Ni alloy surface. The incorporation of chemical etching of Pt-Ni alloy and in situ precipitation of LDH are studied by joint experimental and theoretical efforts. The initial Ni-rich Pt-Ni octahedra transform by interior erosion into Pt3Ni nanoframes with enlarged surface areas. Furthermore, owing to the basic active sites of the decorated LDH together with the metallic sites of Pt3Ni, the resulting Pt-Ni nanoframe/NiAl-LDH composites exhibit excellent catalytic activity and selectivity in the dehydrogenation of benzylamine and hydrogenation of furfural.
Pore Confinement Strategy to Construct Uniformly-Sized Ni on Carbon Nanosheets for Exceptional Catalytic Hydrogenation

Abstract:Facile synthesis of uniform supported metal catalysts is of great significance yet remains challenging for sustainable heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, a novel pore confinement strategy is developed to efficiently preisolate metal ions in suitably sized polymer pores via strong coordinate bonds and ensure successful fabrication of uniform carbon-supported metal nanoparticles. Specifically, Ni2+-coordinated polydopamine (PDA) mesoporous layer (induced by micelle assembly) was coated on GO nanosheets for the confinement of the nickel atoms (GO@PDA-Ni-x, x means pore size of PDA layer), achieving Ni@C-x nanosheets catalysts with evenly and densely dispersed Ni nanoparticles after pyrolysis in H2/Ar atmosphere. Comprehensive characteristic techniques including SEM, TEM, and XPS reveal the intrinsic formation mechanism and physicochemical details. In the following probe catalytic reaction of NaBH4-mediated hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), the obtained Ni/C-10 exhibits exceptional catalysis performance with a rapid rate constant (0.686 min−1), outperforming many previously reported heterogeneous catalysts. Moreover, the catalytic activity remains almost unchanged after being recycled several times, proving the prominent stability. This work opens up an innovative avenue for rational design and synthesis of supported catalysts with controllable size for broad catalytic applications.
Supported Ni@Ni2P Core–Shell Nanotube Arrays on Ni Foam for Hydrazine Electrooxidation

Abstract:Development of high-performance electrocatalysts requires a judicious selection of intrinsically highly active materials and smart structure engineering of electrodes to maximize active site density and to construct electronically conductive networks. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of supported Ni@Ni2P core-shell nanotube arrays (NTAs) on Ni foam (NF) as high-performance anode electrocatalysts of the direct hydrazine fuel cell (DHFC). The Ni@Ni2P NTA/NF catalyst is fabricated using a sacrificial template (ZnO) method followed by phosphatization treatment at elevated temperature. The thus-prepared catalyst exhibits unprecedented activity, good stability, and nearly 100% selectivity toward hydrazine electrooxidation following the four-electron pathway under an alkaline condition, outperforming the hydrazine electrooxidation catalysts hitherto reported. The impressive activity observed in this new catalyst would encourage future exploration of DHFCs as viable power sources for vehicular and portable applications.

Preparation of MCM-41 supported Ni@Pd core-shell nanocatalysts by ultrasound-assisted galvanic replacement and their efficient catalytic dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole

Abstract:N-ethylcarbazole (NEC) is one of the most promising liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) due to its low dehydrogenation enthalpy. The development of an efficient catalyst for the dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (H 12 -NEC) is the key to the large-scale application of LOHCs. In this paper, Ni/MCM-41 was prepared by chemical reduction method using MCM-41 as the carrier, and then MCM-41 loaded Ni n @Pd 1 core-shell nanocatalysts (Ni n @Pd 1 /M41) were prepared by ultrasound-assisted galvanic replacement method using Ni as the templating agent and reducing agent. It was shown that there was electron transfer between Ni and Pd, and SMSI effect of Ni n @Pd 1 with MCM-41 by the characterization results of Ni n @Pd 1 /M41, which promoted the catalytic performance. H 12 -NEC dehydrogenation efficiency over Ni 6 @Pd 1 /M41 reached 100% at 180 °C for 4 h and at 170 °C for 6 h, and 97.58% for 6 h at 160 °C, and TOF was 5080.6 h −1 , which was better than that reported in the literature. The excellent catalytic dehydrogenation performance of Ni 6 @Pd 1 /M41 can mainly be attributed to the synergistic effect of coordination and strain effects between the bimetals.
