Abstract:Liquid-phase hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene(DCPD) on Ni/HY catalysts prepared by an impregnation technique was investigated.The results showed that the Ni/HY catalyst had effective catalytic activity for liquid-phase hydrogenation of DCPD to yield endo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene(endo-THDCPD).The conversion of DCPD was greatly influenced by m(Catalyst)/m(DCPD),reaction temperature(θ),Ni-loadings on the catalyst(w(Ni)) and the pore characteristics of the catalyst support.Increasing the reaction temperature or increasing the m(Catalyst)/m(DCPD) favored the conversion of DCPD and the yield of endo-THDCPD.When w(Ni) was lower,the catalytic activity of Ni/HY increased with the increase of w(Ni).When w(Ni) was beyond about 20%,its influence on the catalyst performance became less.The conversion of DCPD reached as high as 99.5% and the yield of endo-THDCPD was 96.3% at m(Catalyst)/m(DCPD)=1/10,w(Ni)=29.39%,θ=170℃ and t=60 min.

Abstract:The synthesis and utilization of bimetallic catalysts for the hydrogenation of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) to dimethyl cyclohexanedicarboxylates (DMCD) is described in this Article. A variety of techniques, such as low temperature N-2 adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and H-2 temperature-programmed desorption were employed to characterize both the supports and the catalysts. The influence of various operational parameters, for example reaction temperature, pressure, and time, on the catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of DMT was systematically analyzed. Under optimized conditions, a DMT conversion of 80% along with DMCD selectivity of 95% were achieved. Furthermore, efforts were also made to probe the catalyst stability. The enhanced catalytic performance of optimized Ru-Ni/CNT catalysts can be attributed to the tight immobilization of the metal particles on the carbon nanotubes and the unique properties of the nitric acid-treated carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Hydrogen production via dehydrogenation of cyclohexane is regarded as one of the most promising on-board hydrogen supplier system for hydrogen vehicles. In this study, the deactivation mechanism of Raney-Ni catalyst under "wet-dry" multiphase reaction conditions was studied by means of characterizations. The fresh and deactivated Raney-Ni catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), X-ray spectroscopy (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), mercury porosimetry and granularity analysis. It was found that the deposition of the filamentous carbon, which came from the side reactions of cyclohexane, on the outer layers of Raney-Ni particles was the main reason for the catalyst deactivation. Due to the strong external diffusion resistance during the multiphase reaction process, the carbon was concentrated in the orifices, and the amount of carbon was about 3.25 wt.% of the catalyst. The decay of Raney-Ni was a typical orifice coking deactivation. The experimental study also showed that the deactivated Raney-Ni catalyst could be regenerated by coke elimination with water and recovered its activity. In addition, a regeneration mechanism of the deactivated catalyst by coke elimination was proposed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of supported Ru based catalysts (support = AC, Al2O3, SiO2, HZSM-5) were prepared with different methods and applied in the hydrogenation of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedione (CBDK) to 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO). Detailed catalyst characterizations of XRD, TEM, BET, ICP, XPS and NH3-TPD methods were applied to investigate the support effect and influence of preparation methods. Complete conversion of the substrate was achieved with the selectivity of CBDO up to 99.1% over Ru/AC catalysts. The superiority of Ru/AC catalyst prepared with chemical precipitation method over other counterparts were attributed to the larger specific surface area, smaller metal particle size and better Ru dispersion, which was more favorable for the hydrogenation of CBDK.
Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Cyclohexane over Carbon Nanotubes-Supported Elecroless Nickel-plating Catalysts

Abstract:Ni catalyst supported on carbon nanotubes (Ni/CNTs) and prepared by eletroless nickel plating process was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/ED). The catalytic property was studied by the method of dehydrogenation of cyclohexane under "wet-dry multiphase conditions", and the influences of reaction parameters, such as the reaction temperature and the ratio of cyclonhexane/catalyst, on the catalytic dehydrogenation reaction were investigated. The results show that the Ni/CNTs prepared with the pH value of plating solution between 5.2~2.0 has small nickel particles with good dispersion, which can provide high catalytic activity and selectivity for the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane to benzene, and using it, the conversion ratio of cyclohexane dehydrogenation can reach 68.7% under the suitable conditions of 523 K and the cyclohexane/catalyst ratio of 1 mL·g-1. However, it was found that the catalyst activity of Ni/CNTs decreases significantly after repeated use. The SEN detections of Ni/CNTs catalysts used before and after dehydrogenation processes indicate that the main cause of the used Ni/CNTs catalyst activity decrease after dehydrogenation process is laid to the shedding of nickel particles from its plating coating.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) is one of the pivotal processes in the production of green high-energy-density liquid hydrocarbon fuels, jet propellent-10 (JP-10). However, the high dependency of the current catalysts on high temperature and pressure, whether the non-noble (>120 °C, >15 bar) or even the noble catalyst (80 °C, >7.6 bar), leads to enormous energy consumption and technical challenges in environment and sustainable development. Herein, we prepared a carbon layer wrapped Ni nanoparticles/g-C 3 N 4 catalyst (/g-C 3 N 4 ) derived from the in-situ-formed Ni-MOF/g-C 3 N 4 composite. Benefiting from the 53.2 wt% small-sized Ni nanoparticles and nanosheet structure, resulting in high-density accessible active sites (5.38 × 10 20 sites g −1 ) and the mass transfer enhancement, /g-C 3 N 4 achieved DCPD hydrogenation under ambient conditions. > 99.9 % DCPD conversion and 98.1 % endo -tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene yield was obtained at 30 °C, 1 bar, significantly outperforming the benchmark 5 % Pd/C. To the best of our knowledge, it's the mildest condition for DCPD hydrogenation. Further, comprehensive mechanistic insights were gained from combining means of kinetic investigations, in situ characterization, and theoretical calculations. The discrimination result of 27 kinetic models indicated that DCPD hydrogenation followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Haugen-Watson formulism regarding the reaction between the chemisorbed dihydrodicyclopentadiene (DHDCPD) and dissociatively adsorbed hydrogen as the rate-determining step. In-situ DRIFTS confirm that the norbornene ring is preferentially adsorbed and hydrogenated. The DFT calculations further substantiate the hydrogenation pathway. The present work provides guidance for the development of highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts and opens up an environmental-friendly and economically viable avenue for DCPD hydrogenation.

Abstract:N-doped carbon possesses the advantages of electronic modification and immobilization of metal nanoparticles. Hence, N-doped carbon-based metal catalysts have received extensive attention. This study prepared uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles (24.0 wt%) on porous N-doped carbon, which was fabricated via the high temperature pyrolysis of nitrogen-rich ZnNi MOFs with 1H-1,2,3-triazole as the ligand. The 1H-1,2,3-triazole as a high energy ligand could volatilize violently to form a N-doped macroporous carbon-based structure. Zn acted as a fence and prevented the accumulation of Ni during the pyrolysis of ZnNi MOFs. The synergistic effect from the abundant porous structure together with uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles proves the excellent catalytic activity toward the hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene, showing 100% DCPD conversion and >99% THDCPD selectivity.

Abstract:Preparation and catalytic performance of skeletal Ni catalysts supported on Al2O3 were studied. The effects of alloy powder/pseudo-boehmite powder mass ratios and calcination temperatures of precursors on surface properties, compressive strength and catalytic performance were investigated. It was found that catalysts prepared by precursors which were molded with alloy powder/pseudo-boehmite powder mass ratio of 4/6 and calcinated at 860°C in air atmosphere exhibited excellent compressive strength (16.11N/mm), high dicyclopentadiene conversion (>95%) and appropriate THDCPD selectivity (>50%) during 1000-hour evaluation. The operational conditions were obtained as following: T=120°C, P=2.0MPa, LSHV=2.0h−1 and hydrogen–oil ratio=300:1.
Selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene to cyclopentene over an amorphous NiB/SiO2 catalyst

Abstract:An amorphous NiB/SiO2 catalyst, with a large specific surface area, was prepared by a reductive-impregnation method. The selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene to cyclopentene was carried out in a continuous flow fix-bed reactor at atmospheric pressure and with 10 g g cat(-1) h(-1) of cyclopentadiene feed. The catalyst showed high selectivity and stability. Cyclopentene was obtained in 96-100% yield at complete conversion of cyclopentadiene at temperatures ranging from 80 degrees C to 200 degrees C and no significant decrease of the activity was observed during the reaction period of 500 h. The catalyst sample was characterized by ICP, XRD, DSC, SEM, XPS, BET and O-2 adsorption. XRD measurement revealed that the amorphous state was kept after catalytic reaction. Differential kinetic study showed that the hydrogenation proceeded according to a Rideal-Eley mechanism. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract:Pt-Ni bimetallic catalysts and the corresponding monometallic Pt catalysts supported on active carbon were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. Their activities for decalin dehydrogenation were investigated at a superheated liquid film state in a batch reactor. The effects of temperature, impregnation sequence, and Pt/Ni molar ratio on the dehydrogenation activity and the naphthalene yield were investigated. The results show that the Pt-Ni bimetallic catalyst significantly enhanced hydrogen evolution compared with either Ni or Pt monometallic catalyst. The highest dehydrogenation conversion and naphthalene yield were obtained when the Pt/Ni molar ratio was 1:1 and Pt was impregnated first. The experimental results were correlated with density functional theory calculations of hydrogen binding energy (HBE) on different catalytic surfaces. The correlation confirmed that bimetallic surfaces with stronger HBEs had higher dehydrogenation activities.

Abstract:The kinetics for the pinene hydrogenation to pinane, the transformation of renewable biomass to useful chemicals, using spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst (SFCC) supported nickel (Ni/SFCC), has been extensively investigated without any organic solvent, in the temperature range 373–393 K and the hydrogen pressure of 2–6 MPa in the absence of diffusional limitation. The non-noble metal catalyst was synthesized by incipient wet impregnation method and characterized by SEM, XPS and ICP. The catalytic effects of various parameters (catalyst weight, temperature and hydrogen pressure) on the reaction were reported, and the novel catalyst exhibited good activity. 17 kinds of Langmuir–Hinshelwood surface reaction mechanisms for the hydrogenation of pinene were proposed and derived. The best model described the experimental data with physically meaningful parameters was obtained by parameter diagnostics and a non-linear regression analysis, in which the surface reaction of adsorbed hydrogen atoms and pinene molecules over nickel catalyst was the rate-controlling step during the entire hydrogenation process. The activation energy of pinene surface hydrogenation to pinane was 118 ± 2.61 kJ mol−1 calculated from the Arrhenius plot.

Abstract:To investigate the kinetics behaviors of dicyclopentadiene hydrogenation, a series of experiments were performed at different temperatures (323-353 K) under varying hydrogen pressure (0.5-1.5 MPa) with a range of Pd/C catalyst loading (0.25-1.00 wt %) using ethanol as solvent in a batch reactor. The time dependent concentration variations for each component were traced under the conditions of removing both the internal and external diffusion effects. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism was proposed with the consideration of the noncompetitive adsorption between the organic species with hydrogen, and the surface reaction was the rate-determining step. The kinetic equations for the sequence reaction were derived on the basis of the analysis of mechanisms, and the model parameters were determined by fitting the experimental data in differential temperature using the method of Runge-Kutta. The reaction activation energies for the first and second steps are 3.19 and 31.69 kJ x mol(-1), respectively, and the reliability of the model was verified by these experimental results to change hydrogen pressure, reactant concentration and catalyst loading. The simulation results agreed well with the experimental data.
Investigation on depolymerizing dicyclopentadiene using hydrogen as eluent gas

Abstract:Aiming at producing high purity anhydrous dicyclopentadiene(DCPD),the process of depolymerizing DCPD in the presence of hydrogen is investigated with a continuous bed reactor.Factors including depolymerization temperature,reaction time and H_2 to oil ratios are studied.Results show that the conversion of DCPD increases,while the yield of cyclopentadiene(CPD)increases first,and then drops slightly with increasing deploymerization temperature and reaction time.The optimal reaction conditions are:deploymerization temperature 320℃,reaction time 1 s and H_2 to oil ratio of 50.Under these conditions,the conversion of DCPD reaches 98%,while the yield of CPD iS 97%.Deploymerization temperature of the process in the presence of H_2 is about 30℃lower than in the presence of N2 or water vapor,and the clogging problem due to the formation of coke is also alleviated.The reaction kinetic model well predicts the conversion of DCPD.

Abstract:Liquid-phase hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene (endo-tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]deca-3,8-diene) in the presence of Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalyst (PC-25) in heptane at 76 °C proceeds consecutively via the intermediate endo-tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]dec-3-ene with the final formation of endo-tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]decane. No destruction of the norbornane skeleton occurred under the experimental conditions. Reaction products were identified, main reaction routes were determined, material balance was studied. Kinetic data indicate a clear separation of the process steps and a quantitative hydrogenation of the norbornene bond in the substrate at the first step with practically 100% selectivity and conversion. The first step was found to have the zero kinetic order in the starting diene, the second step has the first order in monoene. The similarity of adsorption characteristics of norbornenes of different structures was kinetically confirmed. A consecutive scheme was proposed for the mechanism of the process based on the combination of experimental data.

Abstract:The catalytic properties of palladium and nickel, including sulfidized catalysts, as well as bimetallic Pd-Ag catalysts in the hydrogenation of 1,3-pentadiene to pentenes have been studied. Sulfidation of nickel and palladium catalysts leads to a significant increase in olefin selectivity. Palladium catalysts are more active at low reaction temperatures, however, sulfidized Ni catalysts are not inferior to palladium ones in olefin selectivity and productivity. Palladium catalysts with an ultralow palladium concentration (0.04 wt %) have been developed, which are an order of magnitude more potent than the other studied catalysts in terms of turnover frequency.

Abstract:MCM-41 supported nickel phosphide (Ni2P/MCM-41) was prepared by temperature-programmed reduction of the corresponding phosphate. The catalyst activity for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), hydrodearomatization (HDA), hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) and hydrodesulfurization (HDS) was investigated in a fixed bed reactor. O-cresol HDO, 1-methylnaphthalene HDA, quinoline HDN, dibenzothiophene HDS and simultaneous HDO, HDA, HDN, HDS were respectively tested at different temperatures with constant pressure (6.0 MPa), liquid hourly space velocity (3.0 h-1), hydrogen-to-oil volume ratio (600:1). The results indicate that Ni2P /MCM-41 catalyst has great performance on HDO, HDA, HDN, HDS in single model compound reactions. O-cresol and DBT are almost completely transformed at 375°C, while 1-methylnaphthalene and quinoline reach the highest conversion at 300°C. In the simultaneous reactions, quinoline shows higher conversion by competitive adsorption on the catalyst hydrogenation sites, leading to conversion decrease of o-cresol, 1-methylnaphthalene and DBT.

Abstract:Improving the catalytic efficiency of earth-abundant metals, such as nickel, through surface design has the potential to replace noble-metal-based catalysts. Here, we report that coating nickel with nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni@NC) enhances its stability and activity for the semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies with substituted phenylacetylenes revealed an electronic effect that suggests a contribution of the homolytic cleavage of H 2 followed by hydrogen spillover to the N-doped carbon coating. As a result, the hydrogenation reaction occurs at temperatures as low as 25 oC, while the benchmark Raney® nickel remains inactive. These results are supported by a combination of experimental results and theoretical insights. Moreover, it has unveiled a new avenue of research focused on designing efficient hydrogenation catalysts that are resistant to carbon monoxide poisoning and remain active even at low temperatures.
