Abstract:A series of modified Ni-Zn bimetallic catalysts were prepared by depositing different kinds of 4 wt% metals (Ir, Pt, Au, Cu, Ag) on the Ni-Zn-Al hydrotalcite (NZAH) and tested in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene. The activity was enhanced by 3-fold over the 4 wt% Au/NZAH, meanwhile, the yield of C2H4 was also increased more than 4 times compared with the NZAH. Characterization by means of H2-TPR, XRD, SEM, and TEM revealed that Au was highly dispersed on the catalyst, and the ternary Au-Ni-Zn alloy was formed during the H2 reduction at 500 degrees C. Doping Au in Ni-Zn bimetallic catalyst weakens the adsorption of acetylene and also hinders the coke deposition on the catalyst, which leads to the enhanced activity in acetylene hydrogenation.

Abstract:Achieving high ethylene selectivity and activity simultaneously for acetylene selective hydrogenation still remains challenging. Here, the challenge of the trade-off between activity and selectivity was solved by synergizing electronic effects and spatial confinement, which was achieved by confining the Ni-Co-Cu trimetallic nanoparticles in a carbon layer (NixCuyCoz@C/Al2O3). Compared to the catalyst without carbon encapsulation (NixCuyCoz/Al2O3), NixCuyCoz@C/Al2O3 showed superior catalytic performance in terms of enhanced activity, selectivity and stability. Under optimal conditions, acetylene conversion of 100% and ethylene selectivity of 89% were achieved, whereas NixCuyCoz/Al2O3 exhibited lower acetylene conversion (92%) and ethylene selectivity (21%). Detailed characterizations reveal that the electronic structure can be regulated flexibly by controlling the composition of Ni-Co-Cu nanoparticles. The enhanced activity and selectivity were attributed to the weakened adsorption of acetylene and ethylene on the electron-rich Ni. The improved stability was related to the carbon layer, which suppressed the acetylene coupling by the acidic sites on the Al2O3 surface.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of acetylene is a vital process to for the purification of crude ethylene in petroleum industry. Achieving high activity and selectivity simultaneously over Ni-based catalysts is still challenging. Herein, a partial encapsulation strategy is proposed by fabricating carbon-encapsulated Ag nanoparticles and un-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles on Al 2 O 3 surface (Ni-Ag@C/Al 2 O 3 ) toward the enhanced selectivity without loss of activity. In particular, the Ni-Ag@C/Al 2 O 3 exhibits higher ethylene selectivity of 81% at the complete acetylene conversion along with excellent stability for 30-h, in sharp with the Ni/Al 2 O 3 (6%) and Ni-Ag/Al 2 O 3 (54%) catalyst. The enhanced selectivity is attributed to the promotion of hydrogen spillover by the carbon species on Al 2 O 3 surface and the inhibition of oligomer formation by a steric hindrance formed by the carbon layer on the Ag surface. This study provides a new structural design avenue of bifunctional bimetallic catalyst for selective hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:In this work, we report a synthesis approach for catalyst preparation using shape-controlled Al2O3 supports with enriched quantities of coordinatively unsaturated Al3+ centers. These centers can then induce ordering in bimetallic catalysts, even with a simple impregnation strategy and this is shown to be beneficial for selective hydrogenation of acetylene. Interestingly, nanorod Al2O3 induced a highly homogeneous and ordered Ni1Cu1 nanoalloy, mainly attributed to the coordination effect of unsaturated Al3+ sites that accelerate atomic diffusion and ordering (affirmed by molecular simulation). The as-obtained Ni–Cu/Al2O3-rod catalyst exhibited both satisfactory activity and ethylene selectivity of 86% under mild reaction conditions, which outperformed most of Ni-based catalysts reported to date. Through the combination of in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies and computational modeling by density functional theory, it was found that a di-σ-adsorption mode of acetylene on the ordered Ni1Cu1 nanoalloy featuring alternating rows of Cu and Ni atoms played a key role in the improvement of selectivity.

Abstract:Ni-based bimetallic catalysts are widely explored for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene due to their enhanced catalytic performance. However, the comprehensive understanding of performance promoted by Ni-based alloy still remains elusive to date. Herein, supported NiCu/ZrO2 catalysts were fabricated to unveil the origin of improved selectivity and stability. Owing to the electronic and geometric modification of active Ni sites by Cu atoms, NiCu/ZrO2 ensures weak adsorption of key intermediates and easy desorption of ethylene, leading to an improved selectivity towards ethylene. DFT calculations indicate that both the activation barriers for the acetylene deep dehydrogenation pathway and the CC bond cleavage pathway on NiCu alloy are higher, suggesting that NiCu/ZrO2 would show superior stability over Ni/ZrO2. Therefore, the I-D/I-G ratio obtained via in-situ Raman, which represents the anti-coking ability of catalysts, can be employed as a descriptor of catalytic stability. These findings bring new insight for designing efficient heterogeneous catalysts for selective hydrogenation.

Abstract:A catalyst with high selectivity for acetylene selective hydrogenation is highly desirable, yet ideal selectivity often comes at the price of activity loss. Here, a carbon confined Cu15Pd catalyst (Cu15Pd@C) was fabricated through an eco-friendly and efficient approach, which improves ethylene selectivity while at the same time, maintains high activity. Under optimized conditions, acetylene conversion of 100% and ethylene selectivity of 91% were simultaneously achieved. Comprehensive characterization and DFT reveal that the carbon layer not only promotes the formation of smaller nanoparticles, but effectively inhibits the production of green oil, which is associated to the confined spatial microenvironment by the carbon layer, posing steric hindrance to chain growth from acetylene coupling. A series of carbon confined Cu and Ag-based bimetal catalysts were fabricated through the same method, proving the facilitation of carbon layer on such selective hydrogenation universal, and also showed great potential of our method and catalysts in practical application.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation is an important industrial catalytic process in chemical upgrading, where Pd-based catalysts are widely used because of their high hydrogenation activities. However, poor selectivity and short catalyst lifetime because of heavy coke formation have been major concerns. In this work, atomically dispersed Pd atoms were successfully synthesized on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) using atomic layer deposition. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) confirmed the dominant presence of isolated Pd atoms without Pd nanoparticle (NP) formation. During selective hydrogenation of acetylene in excess ethylene, the g-C3N4-supported Pd NP catalysts had strikingly higher ethylene selectivities than the conventional Pd/Al2O3 and Pd/SiO2 catalysts. In-situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that the considerable charge transfer from the Pd NPs to g-C3N4 likely plays an important role in the catalytic performance enhancement. More impressively, the single-atom Pd1/C3N4 catalyst exhibited both higher ethylene selectivity and higher coking resistance. Our work demonstrates that the single-atom Pd catalyst is a promising candidate for improving both selectivity and coking-resistance in hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:We prepared single Ni atoms embedded in an N-doped carbon catalyst with the assistance of metal organic frameworks. The dispersion of Ni atoms was verified by taking X-ray absorption fine structure measurements. Under the typical conditions for hydrogenation of acetylene, this single-site heterogeneous catalyst showed great potential as an alternative to Pd-based materials.

Abstract:Ni/CNTs catalyst, NiB and NiB/CNTs amorphous alloy catalysts were prepared by the impregnation, chemical reduction and impregnation-chemical reduction method with ultrasonic bath, respectively. Heat treatment was carried out to crystaUize NiB/CNTs amorphous alloy catalyst under highly pure nitrogen. These catalysts were characterized, and evaluated in acetylene selective hydrogenation with an atmospheric micro-reactor. Experimental results showed that catalytic activities of NiB/ CNTs amorphous alloy catalyst were superior to these of Ni/CNTs and crystallized NiB/CNTs catalysts. Over the NiB/CNTs amorphous alloy catalyst, acetylene conversion was still higher than 80 percent after 650 minutes of time-on-stream experiment that it was catalytically stable in the acetylene selective hydrogenation. Furthermore, the selectivity of C2H6 decreased gradually in the time-on-stream experiment and fluctuated around 7.5 percent in the long run. The selectivity of C2H4, however, increased gradually in the time-on-stream experiment and fluctuated around 55 percent in the long run.
Highly Selective and Stable Isolated Non-Noble Metal Atom Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene

Abstract:A strategy to fabricate a stable and site-isolated Ni catalyst is reported. Specifically, Mo3S4 clusters allowed individual Ni atoms to bond with Mo and S to create a type of active site. A site-isolated Ni1MoS/Al2O3 sample exhibited high performance in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene. Concretely, 90% ethylene selectivity was achievable at full acetylene conversion under relatively mild reaction conditions without any obvious decay in performance observed during longer testing periods. In contrast, a reference catalyst with Ni ensembles exhibited poor selectivity and stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that H2 molecules were activated by a heterolytic route over Ni1MoS/Al2O3, which enhanced the reaction rate. Improved selectivity originated from the unique isolated Niδ+ structure induced by Mo and S, which facilitated product desorption as opposed to overhydrogenation or oligomerization. This work provides a feasible way to construct site-isolated catalysts with higher active metal loadings and opens up an opportunity for selective hydrogenation.

Abstract:Catalytic semihydrogenation of acetylene is crucial for ethylene purification but still faces a grand challenge in circumventing deep hydrogenation and oligomerization so far, especially for the cost-effective catalysts. Herein, two Ni-based intermetallic nanocatalysts with different atomic arrangements were subtly constructed via controlling the reduction temperature of ZnO-supported NiO particles. The one reduced at 400 °C is L12-type intermetallic Ni3Zn with separated Ni3 trimers (denoted as Ni/ZnO-R400 or Ni3Zn/ZnO); another reduced at 600 °C is L10-type intermetallic NiZn with the homogeneous Ni single atoms completely isolated by Zn atoms (denoted as Ni/ZnO-R600 or NiZn/ZnO). The systematical evaluations validate NiZn/ZnO as an outstanding noble metal-free catalyst for acetylene semihydrogenation, showing a significantly enhanced selectivity toward ethylene relative to Ni3Zn/ZnO (87.5 vs −275.4% at 200 °C) through suppressing not only the unselective hydrogenation to ethane but also carbon deposition. According to catalytic evaluations with or without ethylene, microcalorimetry, and density functional theory calculations, the superior selectivity of NiZn/ZnO stems from the noncompetitive adsorption between the moderately σ-bonded acetylene over two neighboring Ni single atoms and weakly π-bonded ethylene on Ni single-atom sites due to its unique Ni–Zn–Ni ensemble.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is an important type of organic transformation with large-scale industrial applications. This transformation requires efficient catalysts with precise selectivity control, and palladium-based metallic catalysts are currently employed. Here we show that four-coordinated cationic nickel(II) confined in zeolite can efficiently catalyze the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene, a key process for trace acetylene removal prior to the polymerization process. Under optimized conditions, 100% acetylene conversion and an ethylene selectivity up to 97% are simultaneously achieved. This catalyst system also exhibits good stability and recyclability for potential applications. Spectroscopy investigations and density functional theory calculations reveal the heterolytic dissociation of hydrogen molecules and the importance of hydride and protons in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene. This work provides an efficient strategy toward active and selective zeolite catalysts by utilizing the local electrostatic field within the zeolite confined space for small-molecule activation and by linking heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The design of cheap, non-toxic, and earth-abundant transition metal catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes remains a challenge in both industry and academia. Here, we report a new atomically dispersed copper (Cu) catalyst supported on a defective nanodiamond-graphene (ND@G), which exhibits excellent catalytic performance for the selective conversion of acetylene to ethylene, i.e., with high conversion (95%), high selectivity (98%), and good stability (for more than 60 h). The unique structural feature of the Cu atoms anchored over graphene through Cu-C bonds ensures the effective activation of acetylene and easy desorption of ethylene, which is the key for the outstanding activity and selectivity of the catalyst.
50 Ppm of Pd Dispersed on Ni(OH)2 Nanosheets Catalyzing Semi-Hydrogenation of Acetylene with High Activity and Selectivity

Abstract:We report a highly efficient Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst loaded with ultra-low levels of palladium (50 ppm Pd by mass) for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene. The turnover frequency for acetylene conversion over the 0.005% Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst is twice that of the equivalent 0.8% Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst. Notably, an acetylene-to-ethylene selectivity of 80% was achieved over a wide range of temperatures. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to reveal the atomically dispersed nature of palladium in the 0.005% Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst. The excellent selectivity of this catalyst is attributed to its atomically dispersed Pd sites, while the abundant hydroxyl groups of the support significantly enhance the acetylene conversion activity. This work opens up innovative opportunities for new types of highly efficient catalysts with trace noble-metal loadings for a wide variety of reactions.

Abstract:In the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene, nickel-based catalysts offer a promising alternative to precious metal palladium catalysts. Despite the positive hydrogenation activity of nickel-based catalysts, there is still room for improvement in terms of their selectivity and stability. In this study, a simple incipient wetness impregnation method was employed to prepare Ni(OAC) 2 -IL/Al 2 O 3 catalyst and its performance in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene was investigated. It was found that under the conditions of 170 °C and a space velocity of 600 h -1 , the 3% Ni(OAC) 2 -IL/Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved a 95.3% acetylene conversion with an 85.6% ethylene selectivity. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited outstanding stability over a 100 hour test. TEM, XPS and C 2 H 4 -TPD experiments showed that the Ni species were encapsulated in the ionic liquids (ILs), and the interaction between the metal ions, nickel, and the ILs ensured a high dispersion and stability of the actives on the carriers, and the electronic effect between the ionic nickel and the ionic liquids increased the electron cloud density of the Ni, which improved the catalyst selectivity, which is the main reason for its excellent catalytic performance.

Subsurface carbon modification of Ni-Ga for improved selectivity in acetylene hydrogenation reaction

Abstract:Control of subsurface interstitial atoms in transition metals is an effective approach to modulate selectivity in hydrogenation reactions. In this study, nickel was alloyed with gallium to form Ni3Ga, thereby regulating the octahedral interstitial sites. Subsequently, carbon atoms were introduced into the Ni3Ga (forming Ni3GaC0.5) via thermal treatment in an acetylene atmosphere, leading to a significant enhancement in selectivity for acetylene hydrogenation reaction. The X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results demonstrate an increase in the lattice parameter due to the incorporation of carbon atoms and the uniform distribution of carbon in Ni3GaC0.5 nanoparticles. The obtained Ni3GaC0.5/oCNT catalyst exhibits significantly improved selectivity in acetylene hydrogenation reaction, with approximately 82% ethylene selectivity at 98% conversion. Furthermore, it maintains good selectivity at various hydrogen-to-alkyne ratios and displays good stability during long-term operation. The introduction of carbon suppresses the formation of the subsurface hydrogen structure under reaction conditions. Additionally, the charge transfer between carbon and nickel results in the electron deficiency of nickel, effectively inhibiting the over-hydrogenation pathway and enhancing the selectivity. These results provide insights for the design of non-precious metal catalysts in selective hydrogenation reactions.

Preparation of an Unsupported Copper-Based Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene from Cu 2 O Nanocubes

Abstract:Designing cheap, earth-abundant, and nontoxic metal catalysts for acetylene hydrogenation is of pivotal importance, but challenging. Here, a nonprecious metal catalyst for selective hydrogenation of acetylene in excess ethylene was prepared from Cu2O nanocubes. The preparation includes two steps: (1) thermal treatment in acetylene-containing gas at 160 °C and (2) hydrogen reduction at 180 °C. The resultant catalyst showed outstanding performance at low temperature (80–100 °C) and 0.1–0.5 MPa pressure, completely converting acetylene with a low selectivity to undesired ethane (<20%). The characterization results of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy corroborated that the formation of an interstitial copper carbide (CuxC) might give rise to significantly enhanced hydrogenation activity. Preliminary density functional theory calculation demonstrated that the lattice spacing of Cu3C was nearly identical to that of the new CuxC crystallite measured in HRTEM and determined by XRD. The calculated dissociation energy of hydrogen on Cu3C(0001) was considerably lower than that on Cu(111), suggesting superior hydrogenation activity of Cu3C(0001). It is experimentally verified that copper(I) acetylide (Cu2C2) might be the precursor of CuxC.
