Abstract:7 A new impregnation method involving mixture solvents and vacuum drying process 8 was used to prepare gold catalyst (MIV-1Au/C1) for acetylene hydrochlorination 9 reaction, which brought about twice higher catalytic activity than the traditional 10 method (PI-1Au/C1). The method was green, mild and simple. Besides, it appeared to 11 be controllable by solvents and temperatures. Excellent Au dispersion in MIV-1Au/C1 12 was revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Additionally, X-ray 13 photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) profiles proved that Au 0 was the only active species 14 of MIV-1Au/C1 at the initial/highest point of the testing. Further XPS results showed 15 that Au 0 could be oxidized to Au 3+ during the reaction along with the deactivation of 16 MIV-1Au/C1. Thus, Au 0 appeared to be preferred for the catalysis route. Our findings 17 demonstrated the potentiality of the new method for catalysts investigation in 18 acetylene hydrochlorination reaction. Moreover, this work highlighted the importance 19 of Au 0 in this field. 20

Abstract:In order to overcome problems of Au-Cu bimetallic catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination reaction such as instability, Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were prepared through the introduction of thiol and tested to examine their activity and stability. It was found that performances of Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were quite excellent, with significantly higher catalytic activity and better stability than performances of Au/AC and Au-Cu/AC catalysts. The contents of Cu and thiol additives were also optimized and the optimum molar ratio of Au/Cu/SH was 1 : 1 : 10. Catalyst samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption/desorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was demonstrated that the Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were Au-0-based catalysts, due to thiol reducing Au3+ to Au-0 species during the preparation process. Au-0 species exhibited better catalytic activity than Au3+ species for acetylene hydrochlorination, according to the comparison with the composition of active species in different samples through XPS. Furthermore, the sulfhydryl of thiol could bond to the surface of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). It helped in mitigating the oxidation of Au-0 by HCl, protecting Au NPs from structure damage, stabilizing Au NPs in a nearly constant particle size and keeping a more active structure in the reaction environment. Thus, improved dispersity of active species and protection of the active structure of the Au NPs resulted in the better catalytic activity and stability of Au-Cu-SH/AC.

Abstract:A series of modified Ni-Zn bimetallic catalysts were prepared by depositing different kinds of 4 wt% metals (Ir, Pt, Au, Cu, Ag) on the Ni-Zn-Al hydrotalcite (NZAH) and tested in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene. The activity was enhanced by 3-fold over the 4 wt% Au/NZAH, meanwhile, the yield of C2H4 was also increased more than 4 times compared with the NZAH. Characterization by means of H2-TPR, XRD, SEM, and TEM revealed that Au was highly dispersed on the catalyst, and the ternary Au-Ni-Zn alloy was formed during the H2 reduction at 500 degrees C. Doping Au in Ni-Zn bimetallic catalyst weakens the adsorption of acetylene and also hinders the coke deposition on the catalyst, which leads to the enhanced activity in acetylene hydrogenation.
Catalytic Performance of Au III Supported on SiO 2 Modified Activated Carbon

Abstract:Silica was deposited onto activated carbon through TEOS hydrolysis and this composite was used as a support for the Au catalyst in acetylene hydrochlorination. Silica content and the catalyst synthesis process were both optimized. It was found that 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC showed improved stability, while being as active as 1Au/AC. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) quantitatively revealed the synchronism of TEOS hydrolysis and Au deposition, which was believed to be the linchpin in 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC synthesis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that amorphous silica dispersed on the carbon surface uniformly as spherical particles. Silica deposition brought down the surface area of the catalyst while leading to better distribution of gold nanoparticles. Higher gold distribution degree guaranteed the catalytic activity of 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC despite surface area loss. A higher level of resistance to acetylene, excellent surface property stability and less carbonaceous deposition were determined as the origin of the improved stability of 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC.

Abstract:Improving the durability of Au3+ catalyst is an important step in increasing its utility when performing catalyzed acetylene hydrochlorination. Using nitrogen-modified activated carbon (NAC) as support, Au/NAC1 catalyst demonstrated excellent activity and stability when compared with the undoped Au/AC1 under the conditions of 180°C and 1480h−1 of gas hourly space velocity (C2H2 based). Moreover, the Au/NAC1 catalyst delivered a stable performance during a 300h test with the conversion of acetylene and the selectivity of vinyl chloride both reaching more than 99.9% at C2H2 hourly space velocity 100h−1, which substantially exceeds the best results reported in previous literature. The removal of carboxylic groups from the activated carbon surface and the introduction of nitrogen atoms as anchor sites by thermal pretreatment with urea are preferential to stabilize the catalytic active Au3+ species and inhibit the reduction of Au3+ to Au0 in the preparation process of Au/NAC1 catalysts. In addition, increasing the electron density of Au3+ via electron transfer from nitrogen atoms to the Au3+ center can increase the adsorption of hydrogen chloride and inhibit the reduction of Au3+ to Au0 during acetylene hydrochlorination and hence improve the catalytic stability. The excellent catalytic performance of the Au/NAC1 catalyst demonstrated its potential as an alternative to mercury chloride catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:The research and development of a non-mercury catalyst for China's PVC (polyvinyl chloride) industry is extremely urgent. Gold (Au) loaded on activated charcoal (AC), as a potential novel catalyst with high activity, has been regarded as an ideal substitute for mercury. However, the deactivation of a gold catalyst caused by acetylene for long-term industrial applications is a big challenge. In this work, a new methodology of ligand screening and design for gold catalysis was constructed. Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) was proved to be an excellent ligand. Besides, copper (Cu) was added and proved to be a favorable synergistic metal so that the content of Au in the catalyst could be further reduced to 0.2 wt% (weight percentage). Experimentally, the best ratio of each component was optimized to be Au : Cu : TCCA = 1 : 5 : 20. The prepared 0.2 wt% Au catalyst had a conversion of over 98% with over 99% selectivity during 24 h operation under the temperature of 180 °C and GHSV (gas hourly space velocity) of 90 h−1. Then, an over 6800 h pilot trial has been carried out to demonstrate its promising capability for practical applications. Moreover, several characterization methods accompanied by DFT calculations were used, and it was proved that the high stability after TCCA introduction may come from its high ability to prevent high valence Au from being reduced and to inhibit the coking effect and that the electron interaction between Au and Cu could facilitate the dispersion of Au and lead to higher catalytic activity.

Abstract:A catalyst with high selectivity for acetylene selective hydrogenation is highly desirable, yet ideal selectivity often comes at the price of activity loss. Here, a carbon confined Cu15Pd catalyst (Cu15Pd@C) was fabricated through an eco-friendly and efficient approach, which improves ethylene selectivity while at the same time, maintains high activity. Under optimized conditions, acetylene conversion of 100% and ethylene selectivity of 91% were simultaneously achieved. Comprehensive characterization and DFT reveal that the carbon layer not only promotes the formation of smaller nanoparticles, but effectively inhibits the production of green oil, which is associated to the confined spatial microenvironment by the carbon layer, posing steric hindrance to chain growth from acetylene coupling. A series of carbon confined Cu and Ag-based bimetal catalysts were fabricated through the same method, proving the facilitation of carbon layer on such selective hydrogenation universal, and also showed great potential of our method and catalysts in practical application.

Abstract:The gold-catalyzed acetylene hydrochlorination reaction is an important process to produce vinyl chloride monomer in the polyvinyl chloride industry. The traditional catalyst of carbon-supported AuCl3 is inclined to be reduced by acetylene and lose its activity during the reaction process. Here, we presented the construction of Au-I-N-3 active sites through single gold atom dispersed on g-C3N4 (Au-1/g-C3N4), which shows robust catalytic performance toward acetylene hydrochlorination. The Au species is shown to have Au' oxidation state, and it is coordinated with three nitrogen atoms of tri-s-triazine repeating units, which is consistent with density functional theory (DFT) modeling and XAFS measurements. Through DFT study, we demonstrate that the Au-I-N-3 sites tend to coordinate with HCl than C2H2 in the initial reaction. The Au-I-N-3 sites cannot be reduced into Au-0 oxidation state easily and thus maintain their activity as stable catalytic active sites. The single-atom-site Au catalyst with nitrogen coordination environment and corresponding electronic state provides an efficient pathway for acetylene hydrochlorination reaction.
Density Functional Theory Study of a Graphdiyne-Supported Single Au Atom Catalyst for Highly Efficient Acetylene Hydrochlorination

Abstract:In this work, supported single Au on graphdiyne is examined as an efficient catalyst for acetylene hydrochlorination. The adsorption of reactants C2H2 and HCl has a paramount influence on the reaction mechanism. It is indicated that C2H2 adsorption is much stronger than the counterpart of HCl for most of the investigated cases. An Eley–Rideal (E–R) mechanism is first investigated, which is initiated with C2H2 adsorption. In the following steps, the adsorbed C2H2 becomes the site to bind and activate HCl, which leads to formation of the product. It is also revealed that single Au experienced a redox cycle along the reaction pathway. The largest barrier is calculated to be 0.57 eV, corresponding to the product desorption. On the other hand, a novel Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H)-like mechanism is also reported, which started with coadsorption of HCl and C2H2. It is noted that the barriers of the LH mechanism are smaller than those of the ER mechanism. Moreover, supported single Au on graphdiyne has much improved performance than the counterpart on pristine graphene and single-walled carbon nanotube support. Abstract:Production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) via acetylene hydrochlorination reaction (AHR) is consuming huge amount of mercury catalyst that is highly toxic. A cheap, nontoxic, and effective alternate is urgently required. Here, we designed an AuI catalyst for AHR with the excellent catalytic performance. The designed 0.1 AuI(wt %)/AC2 catalyst shows the comparable catalytic efficiency to the commercial mercury catalyst, which is applicable for industrial production of VCM. Theoretical calculations determine the activation mechanism of C2H2 by AuI, and highlight the high stability of AuI.

Abstract:Development of a sustainable process for designing and synthesising an active and stable catalyst for hydrochlorination of acetylene is challenging, yet crucial, for industrial vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production. Herein, direct synthesis of bimetallic AuCu catalysts using organic aqua regia (OAR) preparation methods was investigated. In comparison with conventional aqua regia (AR), bimetallic AuCu catalysts synthesised from OAR exhibit enhanced activity and stability. After careful characterisation of the catalyst samples using X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), this observation was justified for the following reasons: 1) the existence of sulphur and nitrogen atoms stabilised the cationic Au active sites, and 2) OAR helped to sustain the function of the Cu promotor by stabilising it. Advanced understanding on the importance of promoter stability has unveiled new perspectives for this research area.

Abstract:Ru/AC catalyst used in acetylene hydrochlorination reaction has several drawbacks such as poor dispersion, metal loss, serious carbon deposition, and insufficient active sites. To address these issues of traditional Ru/AC, in this study, the supported Ru-Lx/AC catalysts were synthesized by the coordination of ruthenium precursor and several structural triazine ligands. The complexation of heteroatomic structure to Ru atom formed a local active domain, which is more conducive to the synergistic adsorption and activation of the initial reactants, and further optimizes the reaction microenvironment. The spatial topological structure with conjugated structures effectively promoted the transfer of electrons between the heteroatoms and the ruthenium precursors, facilitating the stabilization of active Ru species. The newly developed synthetic process also increased dispersion of reaction components and impeded the sintering of ruthenium components promoted by the local structural forces. The optimum Ru-1,3,5-triazine/AC (Ru-L1/AC) catalyst exhibited 162% higher acetylene conversion than the benchmark Ru/AC catalyst. The significantly improved activity and stability of the optimized catalyst will have a huge application prospect in industry.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of coal-based acetylene to ethylene is an important approach to establishing a non-oil route to ethylene production, yet it suffers from high H 2 consumption as well as a high energy input. Here we report a H 2 -free acetylene hydrogenation process achieved by directly using water as the hydrogen source and low-cost CO as the oxygen acceptor over a Au/α-MoC catalyst. The process delivers over 99% acetylene conversion and a high ethylene selectivity of 83% at 80 °C, surpassing the hydrogenation process using H 2 as the hydrogen source. Mechanistic studies have revealed that in situ-generated hydroxyl species from water dissociation at the boundary of Au and α-MoC, serving as mild reductants, enable the selective semi-hydrogenation of acetylene with residual O removed by CO. This process circumvents the need for H 2 in the classical route and opens avenues for energy-efficient acetylene hydrogenation by water at low temperature.

Preparation of an Unsupported Copper-Based Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene from Cu 2 O Nanocubes

Abstract:Designing cheap, earth-abundant, and nontoxic metal catalysts for acetylene hydrogenation is of pivotal importance, but challenging. Here, a nonprecious metal catalyst for selective hydrogenation of acetylene in excess ethylene was prepared from Cu2O nanocubes. The preparation includes two steps: (1) thermal treatment in acetylene-containing gas at 160 °C and (2) hydrogen reduction at 180 °C. The resultant catalyst showed outstanding performance at low temperature (80–100 °C) and 0.1–0.5 MPa pressure, completely converting acetylene with a low selectivity to undesired ethane (<20%). The characterization results of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy corroborated that the formation of an interstitial copper carbide (CuxC) might give rise to significantly enhanced hydrogenation activity. Preliminary density functional theory calculation demonstrated that the lattice spacing of Cu3C was nearly identical to that of the new CuxC crystallite measured in HRTEM and determined by XRD. The calculated dissociation energy of hydrogen on Cu3C(0001) was considerably lower than that on Cu(111), suggesting superior hydrogenation activity of Cu3C(0001). It is experimentally verified that copper(I) acetylide (Cu2C2) might be the precursor of CuxC. Here, a selective hydrogenation catalyst was prepared by thermal treatment of Cu(OH)2 nanowires with acetylene-containing gas at 120 °C followed by hydrogen reduction at 150 °C. The characterization by means of transmission electron microscopy observation, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that two crystallites were present in the resultant catalyst. One of the crystal phases was metal Cu, whereas the other crystal phase was ascribed to an interstitial copper carbide (CuxC) phase. The reduction of freshly prepared copper (II) acetylide (CuC2) at 150 °C also afforded the formation of Cu and CuxC crystallites, indicating that CuC2 was the precursor or an intermediate in the formation of CuxC. The prepared catalysts consisting of Cu and CuxC exhibited a considerably high hydrogenation activity at low temperatures in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene in the ethylene stream. In the presence of a large excess of ethylene, acetylene was completely converted at 110 °C and atmospheric pressure with an ethane selectivity of <15%, and the conversion and selectivity were constant in a 260 h run.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Catalysis involving gold supported on metal oxides has undergone extensive examination. However, the nature of the catalytic site under actual reaction conditions and the role of the support continue to be vigorously debated. This study addresses these issues through experimental investigations and theoretical simulations. We explore a novel catalytic mechanism that employs dynamic single-atom catalysis for the hydrochlorination of acetylene. This catalytic mechanism occurs in defective ZrO2-supported Au-Zr single-atom alloys. Specifically, the dynamic single-atom catalysis is a result of the mobility of the gold cation, which is accelerated by Cl radicals and strongly couples with the abundant unsaturated surface sites of ZrO2 in a synergistic manner. As a result, the Au electronic structure dynamically evolves, leading to a decrease in the addition reaction energy barrier. Notably, the Au cation can detach from the Au-Zr alloy structure to catalyze the hydrochlorination of acetylene near the Zr-Ov-Zr sites and then reintegrate back into the Au-Zr alloy structure upon completion of the reaction. This study underscores the significance of dynamic active sites under reaction conditions and their pivotal role in catalysis.
A Highly Active Catalyst Derived from CuO Particles for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene in Large Excess Ethylene

Abstract:The removal of acetylene impurities is indispensable in the production of ethylene. Ag-promoted Pd catalyst is industrially used to remove acetylene impurities by selective hydrogenation. It is highly desirable to replace Pd with non-precious metals. In the present investigation, CuO particles, which are most frequently used as the precursors for Cu-based catalysts, were prepared through the solution-based chemical precipitation method and used to prepare high-performance catalysts for selective hydrogenation of acetylene in large excess ethylene. The non-precious metal catalyst was prepared by treating CuO particles with acetylene-containing gas (0.5 vol % C2H2/Ar) at 120 C and subsequent hydrogen reduction at 150 C. The obtained catalyst was tested in selective hydrogenation of acetylene in a large excess of ethylene (0.72 vol.% CH4 as the internal standard, 0.45 vol.% C2H2, 88.83 vol.% C2H4, 10.00 vol.% H2). It exhibited significantly higher activity than the counterpart of Cu metal, achieving 100% conversion of acetylene without ethylene loss at 110 °C and atmospheric pressure. The characterizations by means of XRD, XPS, TEM, H2-TPR, CO-FTIR, and EPR verified the formation of an interstitial copper carbide (CuxC), which was responsible for the enhanced hydrogenation activity.
