Abstract:The reaction-induced phase separation process of polyethersulfone- and polyetherimide-modified (PES- and PEI-modified) epoxy systems was investigated by using transmission electronic microscopes (TEM) and a rheometry instrument. The morphologies of cured blends alter considerably with the PES content and molecular weight at the same content of total thermoplastics. Compared with the PEI-modified systems, many complex phase separation mechanisms are observed due to the introduction of PES, but similar relationships between melt viscosity change behaviors and morphology developments are observed in the PES-added ternary systems. Dynamic mechanical analysis (dma) and mechanical studies show that neither heat resistance nor toughness of the resultant blends is obviously influenced by the addition of PES.

Abstract:The phase separation of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/methyltetrabydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA) blends modified with polyetherimide (PEI) in the presence of various amounts of accelerator benzyldimethylamine (BDMA) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and time-resolved light scattering (TRLS). The morphologies of the blends with the accelerator are of the co-continuous type, exhibiting irregular shapes. They are quite different from that without accelerator, in which the morphology is spherical. The TRLS results display clearly that the phase separation takes place according to a spinodal decomposition mechanism and the evolution of scattering vector q(m) corresponding to epoxy droplets follows a Maxwell-type relaxation equation. The temperature-dependent relaxation time tau obtained for these blends can be described by the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. It demonstrates experimentally that the coarsening processes of epoxy droplets and the final morphologies obtained in these thermoplastic-epoxy systems are affected by viscoelastic behavior.

Abstract:A high temperature thermosetting bisphenol-A dicyanate (BADCy) was blended with a novel thermoplastic poly(ether imide) (PEI) at various composition. The phase separation behavior during isothermal curing was studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), time-resolved light scattering (TRLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and theological measurements. The results suggested that the phase structure changed from separated phase, via co-continuous phase, to phase inversion with the increase of the PEI content. The curing conversion of BADCy was slightly affected by the composition in the blend and the curing rate was decreased with the increase of PEI content. The co-continuous phase morphology was attributed to a spinodal decomposition. The initial concentration of PEI had an effect on the theological behavior during phase separation. It was found by tensile test that the blend with 15 wt.% PEI had higher tensile strength and elongation at break than that without PEI.

Abstract:In this work, the rheological behavior and structural transitions in poly(ether sulfone) (PES)-modified epoxy systems during phase separation were studied by rheometry instrument, scanning electronic microscopy, time-resolved light scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry. The molecular weight and concentration of PES have profound effects on rheological behavior of modified epoxy systems. It was found that the evolution of complex viscosity is closely connected to the molecular weight of PES. Blends with higher molecular weight PIES tend to have a lower conversion at the onset of phase separation and show quicker increase of viscosity with Curing process. The complex viscosity exhibits an exponential growing process during phase separation at various temperatures. The relaxation time of rheological growth depends on both molecular weight of PES and test frequency.

Abstract:This paper studies the phase separation in poly(ether imide) (PEI) modified epoxy resin using imidazole (C11Z-CNS) as epoxy hardener to control its morphology. The sponge-like phase structures were founded at higher PEI concentration (10–25phr), while homogeneous structures are formed at low PEI concentration (5phr). The effects of PEI concentration on curing kinetics and phase structures were studied by differential scanning calorimeters (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is shown that although the addition of PEI does not change the curing mechanism, the separated morphology becomes finer at high PEI concentration. The curing rate and conversion decrease with the increase of the content of PEI. The chain growth polymerization of these systems caused an early gelation (conversion <10%) and early freezing of morphologies. The evolution of phase separation in the early stage was monitored by synchrotron radiation small angle X-ray scattering (SR-SAXS) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). It is suggested that the formation of sponge-like phase structure could be attributed to the strong viscoelastic effects in the early stage of phase separation.

Abstract:The behavior at the early stage of spinodal decomposition (SD) for polyetherimide (PEI)/epoxy blends was investigated. It was found that the phase separation of PEI/epoxy blends took place by SD mechanism. The development of molar mass in the epoxy resin was gradual and then the three blends could still be considered as concentrated solutions of thermoplastic. The kinetics at the early stage of phase separation for these blends could be described by the Cahn–Hilliard–Cook linearized theory.

Abstract:The rheological behaviors and gelation transitions in a polyethersulfone (PES)-modified epoxy system during phase separation were studied by rheometry, time-resolved light scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry. Two separate structural transitions in the curing process of the blend were identified as the first one because of phase separation and the second one related to cross-linking reaction of epoxy resin. Both the times of the two structural transition at different temperatures could be described well by the Arrhenius type equation. The complex viscosity exhibits an exponential growing process during phase separation at various temperatures, correlating to the light-scattering results. The exponential behavior of complex viscosity could be attributed to the viscoelastic flow of epoxy-rich escaping from PES-rich during phase separation process.

Abstract:The results of time-resolved light scattering for the phase separation of epoxy/polyethermide/anhydride blends show that the evolution of scattering vector q(m) follows a Maxwell type relaxation equation. The relaxation time may be suggested as the time taken for the diffusion of the epoxy anhydride n-mers from the PEI-rich phase by their relaxation movement, and the apparent activation energy of the relaxation movement is obtained.

Abstract:A high temperature thermosetting bisphenol-A dicyanate, BADCy was blended with a thermoplastic poly(ether imide) (PEI). The phase separation behavior of the blend was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and time resolved light scattering (TRLS). It was found by SEM that the blend with 20 and 25wt% PEI had a phase inversion structure. The results of TRLS displayed clearly that the phase separation took place according to a spinodal decomposition (SD) mechanism and the evolution of both scattering vector qm and the maximum scattering intensity Im followed Maxwell-type relaxation equation. The temperature-dependent relaxation time τ for the blends can be described by the Williams–Landel–Ferry equation. It demonstrated experimentally that the phase separation behaviors in PEI/BADCy blends were affected by viscoelastic effect.

Abstract:The polymerization-induced phase-separation process of polyethersulfone (PES)-modified epoxy systems was monitored in situ continuously on a single sample throughout the entire curing process by using optical microscopes, time-resolved light scattering (TRLS), scanning electronic microscopes (SEM), and a rheometry instrument. At specific PES content a viscoelastic transformation process of phase inversion morphology to bicontinuous was found with an optical microscope. The theological behavior during phase separation corresponds well with the morphology development. Light-scattering results monitoring the phase-separation process of systems with final phase inversion morphology show a typical exponential decay procedure of scattering vector q(m). The characteristic relaxation time of phase separation can be described well by the WLF equation.

Abstract:The effects of molecular weight on the phase separation of phenyl terminated polyetherimide (P-PEI) modified tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) systems were investigated by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Time-resolved Light Scattering (TRLS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The P-PEI modified systems showed faster cure rate than the neat epoxy resin. An increase of the molecular weight of P-PEI raised the cure rate of the modified systems and changed the morphology from polyetherimide-rich domain in the low molecular weight P-PEI modified system to polyetherimide-epoxy co-continuous phase structure in the high molecular weight ones. The phase separation of high molecular weight P-PEI modified systems may proceed as a two stage process and result in the epoxy-rich spherical domains dispersed in the P-PEI-rich matrix.

Abstract:The morphology and rheological behave of the polyethersulfone/bismaleimide blends during isothermal curing was investigated by rheological instrument, different scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and time resolved light scattering (TRLS). The influences of the PES content, the PES molecular weight and the curing temperatures on the complex viscosity of the blends were discussed in detail, which suggested that the fluctuation of the complex viscosity at the beginning of phase separation was largely dependent on the PES content, while the PES molecular weight mainly influenced the onset of phase separation and had relatively less influence on the evolution of complex viscosity. Moreover, the evolution of complex viscosity of blends with high PES content was relatively less sensitive to the curing temperature. In addition, it was found that the phase morphology as well as the composition of continuous phase played an important role in the rheological behavior of PES modified bismaleimide resin during isothermal curing.

Abstract:The phase separation of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A/methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride blends modified with three poly(ether imide)s (PEIs) of different molecular weights was investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and time-resolved light scattering (TRLS). The morphologies observed by SEM for the three blends were all close to a cocontinuous structure with different periodic distances. The results of TRLS indicated that the phase separation for the PEI-modified epoxy blends took place according to the spinodal decomposition mechanism and the onset time of phase separation, with the periodicity of the phase structure depending on the PEI molecular weight and cure temperature. The time-dependent peak scattering vector was simulated with a Maxwell-type viscoelastic relaxation equation, indicating that the coarsening process of epoxy droplets was mainly controlled by the viscoelastic flow. Relaxation times obtained at different temperatures for the three blends could be described by the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. The effects of the PEI molecular weight on the processes of viscoelastic phase separation were investigated, and the observed trends could be explained qualitatively through thermodynamic analysis. Abstract:Polyethersulfone (PES)-modified epoxy systems with stepwise reaction were studied throughout the entire curing process by using optical microscopes, time-resolved light scattering (TRLS), and a rheolometry instrument compared with that of chainwise polymerization. The results suggested that the phase separation process is mainly controlled by the diffusion of epoxy oligomers for stepwise mechanism system and by that of epoxy monomers for chainwise mechanism system. In case of high PES content (SPES-20%) light-scattering results showed a viscoelastic phase separation and the characteristic relaxation time of phase separation can be described well by the WLF equation. However, in the case of low PES content (SPES-14%) secondary phase separation phenomenon was observed by Optical Microscope and further demonstrated by rheological study.

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to trace the development of the morphology of polyetherimide-modified epoxy resins. On the basis of SERI results and the change of the glass transition temperature of the blends during curing, different phase formation processes were found and discussed. Regarding the low molecular weight polyetherimide modified system, the phase separation follows a spinodal decomposition mechanism. However, the poor miscibility of high molecular weight polyetherimide with epoxy resin causes the PEI-rich phase to separate in an early stage of curing. As a result, the separated phase, about 10-20 mu m in dimension with fine structure in it, is not the same as that observed in ordinary phase separation processes.

Abstract:The effect of molecular weight on the structure formation of polyetherimide modified epoxy system was studied. Using time-resolved light scattering (TRLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the process of phase separation and the morphology of the blends were investigated. As the curing reaction proceeds, the phase separation occurs first in the large molecular weight polyetherimide (PEI) modified epoxy resin and the time of occurrence of phase separation is increased with the decrease of the inherent viscosity of PEI. Because of the different viscosity of the blends, the blends display varied morphologies from a PEI particle dispersion to co-continuous phases. Changing of the PEI molecular weight may be another possible route to control the morphology of the PEI modified epoxy resins.

Abstract:A high temperature thermosetting bisphenol A dicyanate (BADCy) was modified with a novel thermoplastic poly(ether-imide) (PEI) at various compositions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to measure the conversion of BADCy. Curing kinetics of the BADCy/PEI blend were studied by the dynamic differential scanning calorimeter method. Morphologies of PEI-modified polycyanurates were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the phase structures of the blends changed dramatically with the PEI content and molecular weight. The tensile results showed that the mechanical properties could be correlated with the morphologies. The blend with cocontinuous morphology had the highest tensile strength and elongation at break while the blend with ribbon-like morphology had the lowest one despite PEI molecular weight.

Abstract:Polyether imides (PEI)/silica nanocomposites, prepared by sol–gel process, were used to modify the epoxy resin (ER), and the effect of silica particles on reaction-induced phase separation and mechanical properties of these systems were investigated. SEM images of the fracture surface of ER/PEI/silica composites showed an interesting morphology transformation with the increase of silica particle content. SEM–EDX results indicated that silica particles once formed in the PEI gradually migrated and concentrated in epoxy-rich region during the phase separation because of the better affinity between silica particles and epoxy resin. FTIR measurement and rheological test confirmed that the silica particles make the polymerization reaction of epoxy faster and the dynamic DSC results demonstrated that the activation energy of these systems decreased with the increase of the silica particles. Mechanical measurements approved that the introducing of PEI/silica nanocomposites into the epoxy could lead to great improvement of the impact strength and storage module.

Abstract:The effect of the amount of curing agent on phenyl-terminated polyetherimide modified TGDDM systems has been studied by using DSC, time resolution light scattering (TRLS) and SEM, Increase of the amount of curing agent will enhance the rates of curing reaction and phase separation, thus change apparently the phase structure of TGDDM/P-PEI (20 phr) blends and the shearing strength. An autocatalytic mechanism was observed for both neat epoxy and the epoxy/PEI blends, but the reaction rates for the blends were higher than that of the neat epoxy due to the presence of PEI.

Abstract:The phase separation evolution of polyethersulfone/epoxy resin/4,4'-methylene-bis(2,6-dimethylaniline) blends was investigated by optical microscopy (OM), time resolved light scattering (TRLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results indicate that there exists viscoelastic effect on the phase separation evolution. The double phase separation was observed in the blend with lower content of PES (13.2 wt% and 15.9 wt%) cured at 120 and 140 degreesC. However, this phenomenon did not occur when the higher PES content blend (18.5 wt%) was cured at the same temperatures.
