Erikson's book Young Man Luther and Donald Capps's "Young Man Luther: A Classic Revisited," the author reflects on his relationships with two of his professors at Princeton Theological Seminary, Donald Capps and Robert C. Dykstra. The author discusses the relationship between Martin Luther and John Staupitz and reflects on its significance for the formation and care of religious individuals. He encourages ministers and pastoral theologians to embrace a theology of personal involvement that goes beyond pedagogical effectiveness and pastoral wisdom.

Smith reserves the term UKUSA for the time (1953) when the agreement recognized the contributions of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. 5 Redman was the Director of US Naval Communications. 6 Liberty quotes former NSA codebreaker (and prolific crossword puzzle creator) William Lutwiniak to whom Tiltman reported: "[Soon after Lutwiniak became the person to whom Tiltman reported, Tiltman explained to Lutwiniak that he] was under contract to NSA on a yearly basis, that he was to conduct cryptanalytic studies of certain cipher systems to be agreed upon, that he was to write a report monthly on his activities, and produce an annual report summing up the year's work ... ." (Liberty Citation 2022 , 167) Tiltman was a consultant at NSA until 1980. He died in August 1982. In 2004, John Tiltman was inducted in the NSA Hall of Honor; he was the first non-US citizen to receive this recognition. 7 Dermot Turing makes a similar comment about Howard Campaigne – that after the war "[Campaigne] would have to resume his career in academic mathematics, or possibly, having seen what was at Bletchley, the incipient discipline of computing machinery." Abstract:Reviews the books, Radio goes to war by Charles J. Rolo (1942); and Radio in wartime by Charles Siepmann (1942). The reviewer states that both these books are written for the layman. Yet, since both of them chronicle current history which is grist for the analytic mill of the social psychologist and since they cover material which is otherwise not readily available to those outside of the circle who receive confidential Government reports, their appearance is worth noting briefly in this Journal Mr. Rolo provides accounts of the radio strategy of the Axis, a description of the fumbling's of the French Paris Mondial, a rather unjustly harsh discussion of the work of the Russian official transmitters, some remarks about "penny-whistles" from the Far East, a chapter on "freedom stations," an altogether too charitable and optimistic account of America's work in the field of shortwave, and finally, some good sense about propaganda for democracy. Mr. Siepmann has produced a succinct pamphlet on the general use of radio in wartime. The reviewer states that it is less journalistic and illustrative than Rolo's book. This pamphlet gives an excellent outline of the propaganda strategy of the Axis and the United Nations, the theory and practice of radio intelligence work, and the manner in which telecommunication is used by the armed services. It too can be used for supplementary reading for courses in social psychology.

Wyndham Lewis and the Cultures of Modernity

Abstract:Making a strong case for a revaluation of Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), this collection argues that significant aspects of Lewis's writing, painting, and thinking have not yet received the attention they deserve. The contributors explore Lewis's contributions to the production and circulation of modernism and assess the links between Lewis's writing and painting and the work of other key contemporary figures, to position Lewis not only as one of the first twentieth-century cultural critics but also as one who anticipated the work of the Frankfurt School and other social theorists. Familiar topics and themes such as Vorticism receive fresh appraisals, and Lewis's significance as a philosopher-critic, novelist, and artist becomes fully realized in the context of his associations with important figures such as John Rodker, Charlie Chaplin, Evelyn Waugh, Naomi Mitchison, and Rebecca West. Lewis emerges as a figure whose writings on politics, corporate patronage, shell shock, anthropology, art, and cinema extend their influence into the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Thus, while most of her readers are familiar with Augustinian and Thomistic theodicies, B. explains to non-specialists how Origen’s “two creations theory,” according to which humans spiritually have choice despite the ex nihilo creation of the physical world, opens the door for free will among the Church Fathers (49–50), or shows how a Kierkegaardian teleological suspension of the ethical in the self’s bid to become authentic can also be creatively construed as the overcoming of boredom, “the root of all evil” (147). Yet B.’s broad treatment sometimes misses critical details. For example, this very phrase from Either/Or is in fact voiced by a pseudonym, the aesthete Johannes the Seducer, not Kierkegaard himself. B. also occasionally forces connections to preserve historical continuity. Her section on “literary explorations in the Nineteenth Century,” where she ties liberal Protestantism to the gothic literature of the Romantics, seems a particularly hard sell (146–48). Finally, some critical works are not treated, such as the most poignant of the empirically sensitive, nonspeculative theodicies of the modern era, C. S. Lewis’s A Grief Observed, where Lewis ties flourishing to pain in a manner which could have served as an effective rejoinder to Leibniz’s Enlightenment “best of all possible worlds” defense of the divine. Nevertheless, for clarity of classic texts as varied as the Book of Job (12–14), Augustine’s City of God (65–66), Luther’s The Bondage of the Will (96), and even John Hick’s seminal God of Love from the twentieth century (171–73), one could scarcely write more succinctly or accessibly than B. has done. In the end, the case for a “trajectory,” the explicit purpose of the volume as indicated by its subtitle, is duly made.

Abstract:The subject of covert radio agents operating behind enemy lines during World War II has recently taken on a life of its own. In the last five years, there have been no fewer than 16 books written on the subject. It is difficult to pinpoint the reason for the lingering popularity of this genre. Perhaps it is the mystery associated with spies, secrets, clandestine radios, and sabotage, which has been the grist of historical novels and movies for over 80 years. It may also be the fact that highly classified files and documents have been slowly released to the public over the years. Several of the recent authors cite in the prefaces of their books that they are using original information recently uncovered or unclassified.

RAF Bomber Command launched spoiling raids against German airfields in occupied Europe, while the war at sea was intense as U-boats struck at Allied and neutral shipping. Abstract:This article offers an insight into the history of the U.S. space program, including its cultural and political aspects. Starting from the vision of space as a new field of peaceful and exciting exploration, predominant in the first half of the 20 th century, moving through the period of the intensive and eventually fruitful Cold War competition between the two bel-ligerent ideological blocs led by the United States and the Soviet Union, and ending with the present-day cooling of the space enthusiasm, it focuses on the main actors and events of the century-long struggle for reaching the stars. The article is based in part on primary journalistic sources in order to capture the social atmosphere of the times it focuses on. It points out to the mid-1960s as the time when the noble aspirations and optimism of the early cosmic endeavors started to succumb to the pressure of reality, which caused the overwhelming stagnation of space initiatives, effectively ending the Golden Age of extra-terrestrial exploration. This argument is backed by an analysis of historical developments leading to and following the American conquest of the Moon.

Abstract:This chapter introduces the historical themes and historiographical questions jointly addressed by contributions to the Militarizing Outer Space volume. Building on recent scholarship on the cultural history of violence, dystopia and the Cold War, it argues that militant astroculture, comprising fantastic scenarios and political rationales, technological promises and apocalyptic threats, proved instrumental in the legitimization and popular appeal of spaceflight throughout the twentieth century. Historicizing key tropes such as ‘dual use,’ ‘space superiority’ and ‘high ground’ commonly evoked to advocate the militarization of space, the chapter probes astroculture’s belligerent facets from the 1920s to the 1980s, from early European space war imaginaries to Ronald Reagan’s ‘Star Wars’ declaration.
