Abstract:As a development of classical nonmonotonic logic,argumentation logic(also called abstract argumentation theory,and formal argumentation,etc.) provides a general mechanism to handle the problems of inconsistency in various situations.It captures the common properties of various reasoning systems in a context of disagreement by using abstract arguments and attack relations,and defines the acceptability of arguments by establishing general evaluation criteria(called argumentation semantics).This makes argumentation logic generally applicable to various situations.First,since the evaluation of the status of arguments is only related to the attack relations among them,the types,origins,representation languages and methods,of underlying knowledge,are allowed to be diverse.Second,the evaluation criteria corresponding to certain argumentation semantics are suitable to various applications.Third,argumentation logic not only supports the epistemic reasoning and the practical reasoning of individual agents,but also supports the reasoning in the process of multiagent interaction(e.g.,persuasion,disputation,negotiation,etc).Currently,the emphasis of the research of argumentation logic is on the definitions and computational methods of argumentation semantics,the instantiation approaches of argumentation semantics,and the applications of argumentation semantics,etc.
Logical Dynamics Meets Logical Pluralism?

Abstract:Where is logic heading today? There is a general feeling that the discipline is broadening its scope and agenda beyond classical foundational issues, and maybe even a concern that, like Stephen Leacock’s famous horseman, it is ‘riding off madly in all directions’. So, what is the resultant vector? There seem to be two broad answers in circulation today. One is logical pluralism, locating the new scope of logic in charting a wide variety of reasoning styles, often marked by non-classical structural rules of inference. This is the new program that I subscribed to in my work on sub-structural logics around 1990, and it is a powerful movement today. But gradually, I have changed my mind about the crux of what logic should become. I would now say that the main issue is not variety of reasoning styles and notions of consequence, but the variety of informational tasks performed by intelligent interacting agents, of which inference is only one among many, involving observation, memory, questions and answers, dialogue, or general communication. And logical systems should deal with a wide variety of these, making information-carrying events first-class citizens in their set-up. The purpose of this brief paper is to contrast and compare the two approaches, drawing freely on some insights from earlier published papers. In particular, I will argue that logical dynamics sets itself the more ambitious diagnostic goal of explaining why substructural phenomena occur, by ‘deconstructing’ them into classical logic plus an explicit account of the relevant informational events.

Abstract:This article reviews legal applications of logic, with a particularly marked concern for logical models of legal argument. We argue that the law is a rich test bed and important application field for logic-based AI research. First applications of logic to the representation of legal regulations are reviewed, where the main emphasis is on representation and where the legal conclusions follow from that representation as a matter of deduction. This includes the representation of deontic concepts, normative positions, legal ontologies, time and change. Then legal applications of logic are reviewed where legal rules are not just applied but are the object of reasoning and discourse. This includes arguing about applying statutory rules in unforeseen circumstances, interpretative reasoning in light of the facts of a case, and evidential reasoning to establish the facts of a case. This part of the review has special emphasis on argumentation-based approaches. This also holds for the final part, which discusses formal models of legal procedure and of multi-agent interaction in legal proceedings. The review concludes with identifying some of the main open research problems. The review shows that modern legal applications of logic confirm the recent trend of widening the scope of logic from deduction to information flow, argumentation and interaction.

Abstract:It is a general view that traditional logic is expressed in natural language and modern logic in formal one, which indicates that modern logic can not solve problems in natural language, while the traditional logic can. This is wrong. The primary difference between traditional logic and modern logic lies, on the surface, in their expressive forms, but in fact, in their syntax and semantics: the former is of the subject-predicate structure, while the latter of predicate structure. As a result, modern logic provides interpretations for natural language different from and better than that of traditional logic.

Abstract:The textbook by Doets and van Eijck puts the Haskell programming language systematically to work for presenting a major piece of logic and mathematics. The reader is taken through chapters on basic logic, proof recipes, sets and lists, relations and functions, recursion and co-recursion, the number systems, polynomials and power series, ending with Cantor's infinities. The book uses Haskell for the executable and strongly typed manifestation of various mathematical notions at the level of declarative programming. The book adopts a systematic but relaxed mathematical style (definition, example, exercise, ...); the text is very pleasant to read due to a small amount of anecdotal information, and due to the fact that definitions are fluently integrated in the running text. An important goal of the book is to get the reader acquainted with reasoning about programs.

Abstract:'Logic' is a growing and changing concept.Logic is concerned with human thinking;it refines the prescriptions of how human beings should think from the descriptions of how human beings actually think.Because of the development of human thinking and the change of human's wants in cognition and practice,logical studies of different historical periods usually show important difference in their subject matters,emphases,methodologies and results,and then the varieties of logical theories have been multiplied.In the push of computer science and artificial intelligence research,contemporary logic becomes to focus on the investigation of how human actually think on different concrete topics,and brings itself some new characteristics,e.g.the direct and obvious description of actual process of thinking,the complexity of logical techniques,the uncertainty of the conclusions of inference,and the pursue of the applicability of the resulting theories,and so on.We can't take the dominant approach of a historical period to be absolutely or uniquely correct one,and use it to judge all the research of our historical predecessors and contemporary colleagues.We should never forget the slogan that 'independence in spirit,freedom in thinking' which is the soul of academic research,and never forget to put it into practice in our logical studies.We should maintain academic standards and protect academic freedom at the same time.

Abstract:Based on ideas of quantum theory of open systems and psychological dual system theory we propose two novel versions of Non-Boolean logic. The first version can be interpreted in our opinion as simplified description of primitive (mythological) thinking and the second one as the toy model of everyday human reasoning in which aside from logical deduction, heuristic elements and beliefs also play the considerable role. Several arguments in favor of the interpretations proposed are adduced and discussed in the paper as well.

Abstract:Combining logics has become a rapidly expanding entreprise that is inspired mainly by concerns about modularity and the wish to join together tailor made logical tools into more powerful but still manageable ones. A natural question is whether it offers anything new over and above existing standard languages.By analysing a number of applications where combined logics arise, we argue that combined logics are a potentially valuable tool in applied logic, and that endorsements of standard languages often miss the point. Using the history of quantified modal logic as our main example, we also show that the use of combined structures and logics is a recurring theme in the analysis of existing logical systems.

Abstract:Modern logic is undergoing a cognitive turn, side-stepping Frege’s ‘antipsychologism’. Collaborations between logicians and colleagues in more empirical fields are growing, especially in research on reasoning and information update by intelligent agents. We place this border-crossing research in the context of long-standing contacts between logic and empirical facts, since pure normativity has never been a plausible stance. We also discuss what the fall of Frege’s Wall means for a new agenda of logic as a theory of rational agency, and what might then be a viable understanding of ‘psychologism’ as a friend rather than an enemy of logical theory.
