Abstract:<p>Cubic-phase Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) garnet is a promising solid electrolyte candidate for next-generation Li batteries. As a viable approach, the desired cubic-phase formation of LLZO relies on elemental doping. In this regard, various dopants such as Al and Ga are doped into the LLZO samples, which are synthesized using a solid-state reaction method. The Al- and Ga-doped LLZO can transform to a cubic-phase garnet at 900 °C. After 1200 °C sintering, a Li2ZrO3 impurity phase is found for the Al-doped LLZO pellet, which still shows many voids and inhomogeneous particles on the surface. The Ga doping seems to be attractive since it can effectively stabilize the cubic phase and desired microstructure within 900−1200 °C. Based on the optimized Ga-doped LLZO (LGLZO), various electrolyte architecture designs are developed that include LGLZO pellet electrolytes with and without poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-LGLZO coating, and hybrid electrolyte layers of PEO-LiTFSI, PEO-LGLZO, and PEO-LiTFSI-LGLZO composites. Li//LiFePO4 (LFP) cells with various types of electrolytes are assembled, and their charge-discharge properties are investigated. The all-solid-state Li//PEO-LiTFSI-LGLZO//LFP cell exhibits satisfactory charge storage performance, which has revealed potential for practical applications.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily focuses on addressing the key issues of electrolyte materials in solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Specifically, the research team developed a novel solid-state electrolyte by doping gallium (Ga) into lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO) for use in solid-state lithium-ion batteries. The paper addresses the following core issues: 1. **Enhancing cubic phase stability**: The original LLZO forms a tetragonal phase structure at low temperatures, while the cubic phase structure has higher lithium-ion conductivity. By doping Ga, the cubic phase can be stabilized at lower temperatures, thereby improving the lithium-ion conductivity of the material. 2. **Optimizing microstructure and morphology**: The effects of different dopants on the particle morphology and microstructure of LLZO were studied. It was found that Ga doping helps to form a dense, uniform, and well-connected particle structure, which is crucial for inhibiting lithium dendrite growth. 3. **Improving interface contact**: To overcome the high interfacial resistance between the ceramic electrolyte and the electrode, the researchers designed a multilayer electrolyte structure, including pure LLZO ceramic sheets and composite layers containing polymer (polyethylene oxide, PEO) and lithium salt (LiTFSI), to reduce interface impedance. 4. **Achieving high-performance solid-state batteries**: Through the aforementioned methods, the research team successfully assembled a solid-state lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery based on the PEO-LiTFSI-LGLZO (LGLZO refers to Ga-doped LLZO) composite electrolyte, demonstrating excellent charge-discharge performance and cycling stability. In summary, this paper aims to enhance the overall performance of solid-state lithium-ion batteries by improving the performance of solid-state electrolyte materials, particularly achieving significant progress in increasing lithium-ion conductivity, optimizing material microstructure, and improving interface characteristics.
