Abstract:It is with great sadness and even greater appreciation that I honor the legacy of Dr. Maureen Allwood, who died suddenly on March 4, 2024. Dr. Allwood joined the JTD Editorial Board this year and immediately began work as a co-editor for a forthcoming Special Issue on Inequalities, Intersectionality, and Dissociation. It was my privilege and a genuine pleasure to bring Dr. Allwood into the ISST-D family after her 20 years of groundbreaking work as a clinical scholar, translational research scientist, educator, therapist in practice, and advocate, spanning the fields of youth development and traumatic stress, trauma-informed approaches to juvenile justice and prevention services, and the intersection of historical, racial, ethnic identity-based, and intergenerational trauma, hate crimes, and violence.

Abstract:This paper remembers Lynette Fairbanks, a Principal Clinical Biochemist, working at the Purine Research Laboratory of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, London, England, founded by Anne Simmonds. She was a driving force in the laboratory guiding research and screening for inborn errors of metabolism, while she was a great supervisor. Just being retired she passed away in January 2023.

Abstract:On Saturday 26 September, around 4am, John Barrow died aged 67, with his wife Elizabeth and son Roger at his side. From a scientific perspective, it is hard to conceive a more premature end. During lockdown alone, whilst undergoing chemotherapy and in the full knowledge that his cancer was inoperable, John managed to co-author 11 scientific papers and write a new book ("One Plus One"). Even by his own standards of productivity, this is staggeringly impressive, an achievement he was openly proud of. From a broader perspective, with a wife, 3 children and 5 young grandchildren, many strong friendships, and so much more to offer the world, he departed far too soon.

Abstract:Issue 1 of Volume 42 includes four interesting manuscripts! First, in a manuscript that will also appear as a chapter in the upcoming book Handbook of Organizational Performance: Foundations and Advances, edited by Drs. Doug Johnson and Carl Johnson, Dale Brethower et al. provide a fascinating history of organizational behavior management (OBM). Unfortunately, this is Dr. Brethower's last contribution to the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management (JOBM), as he recently passed away. Dr. Brethower was an emeritus professor of Psychology at Western Michigan University. He was also a founder of the Organizational Behavior Management Network (OBMN) and received that organization's Lifetime Achievement Award. His contributions to the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management and the discipline of OBM will be missed. Rest in peace, Dale.

Abstract:Objective To examine how Canadian newspapers portrayed physicians’ role and medical assistance in dying (MAiD). Design Qualitative textual analysis. Setting Online and print articles from Canadian French and English newspapers. Participants 813 newspaper articles published from 1972 to 2016. Results Key Canadian events defined five eras. From 1972 to 1990, newspapers portrayed physician’s MAiD role as a social issue by reporting supportive public opinion polls and revealing it was already occurring in secret. From 1991 to 1995, newspapers discussed legal aspects of physicians’ MAiD role including Rodriguez’ Supreme Court of Canada appeal and Federal government Bills. From 1996 to 2004, journalists discussed professional aspects of physicians’ MAiD role and the growing split between palliative care and physicians who supported MAiD. They also reported on court cases against Canadian physicians, Dr Kevorkian and suffering patients who could not receive MAiD. From 2005 to 2013, newspapers described political aspects including the tabling of MAiD legislation to change physicians’ role. Lastly, from 2014 to 2016, newspapers again portrayed legal aspects of physicians’ role as the Supreme Court of Canada was anticipated to legalise MAiD and the Québec government passed its own legislation. Remarkably, newspapers kept attention to MAiD over 44 years before it became legal. Articles generally reflected Canadians’ acceptance of MAiD and physicians were typically portrayed as opposing it, but not all did. Conclusions Newspaper portrayals of physicians’ MAiD role discussed public opinion, politicians’ activities and professional and legal aspects. Portrayals followed the issue-attention cycle through three of five stages: 1) preproblem, 2) alarmed discovery and euphoric enthusiasm and 3) realising the cost of significant progress.

Abstract:Distinguished Professor Don Chalmers retired from the Law Faculty at the University of Tasmania on Friday 10 July 2020. This article is dedicated to Don, providing a brief account and acknowledgment of his fine contributions to legal research and education and law reform, particularly in the field of health and medical law, research ethics and policy reform. He has been an excellent colleague, mentor, leader, teacher, and researcher. He deserves to enjoy a long and rewarding retirement, though we, and many others, will not allow him to slip entirely out of the limelight. Don is still much needed, and still has so much to give in our ongoing quest to ensure that legal, research ethics and policy responses are adequate in reaping the benefits and responding to the challenges of biomedical advances.

Abstract:Radiation oncology, medicine, and the world lost one of its most kindhearted and gifted leaders and mentors on 1 March 2024, with the passing of Dr. C. Norman Coleman. His life was fully dedicated to service to others and marked by numerous achievements, providing inspirational mentoring, caring, and generosity. His impact on those he touched directly and on all who benefited from his leadership in cancer research and treatment is impossible to calculate. It is a tragic irony that a giant in the field succumbed to advanced cancer. Although much progress has been made in cancer diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Coleman's loss illustrates that our work is far from being done.

Abstract:Elinor Catherine Hamlin (1924-2020) was a world-renowned Australian obstetrician and gynaecologist who dedicated almost her entire adult working life to eradicating obstetric fistula in Ethiopia. Leaving behind a comfortable life in Sydney and later Adelaide, she travelled with her husband Reginald Hamlin (1908-1993) to Addis Ababa in 1959, with the view to working there for three years and helping set up a midwifery school at the Princess Tsehai Memorial Hospital. But the couple ended up spending the rest of their lives in Ethiopia, where they revolutionised maternal healthcare services and standardised best practice measures for fistula patient care. In 1975 they jointly opened the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital - at that time the only operating specialist fistula hospital in the world - which was destined to become a global centre of excellence in obstetric fistula surgery. Today the hospital carries on Catherine Hamlin's legacy as one of Sydney's most impactful medical graduates on the world stage.

Abstract:Abstract Helen Kivnick was an extraordinary woman whose body of work strongly influenced and continues to influence the field of gerontology. Her classic work on vital involvement in late life, some of which was conducted with Erik and Joan Erikson, could be considered the foundation of current perspectives on positive gerontology, and creativity and aging. The current symposium will include both personal and theoretical takes on the legacy of Kivnick’s work, especially her interests in vital involvement and creativity. Kivnick emphasized the possibility for older adults to adapt to new situations, even in very late life, and while experiencing physical and cognitive decline. Two of the speakers will speak on their personal experiences with Kivnick, while two others will emphasize research and theory derived from Kivnick’s work. Dr. Adams-Price will introduce the symposium by addressing the significance of vital involvement as a concept in aging, as well as the ways creativity can improve well-being in late life. Dr. Wyatt-Brown will describe her long friendship with Dr. Kivnick, including Kivnick’s comments in their book with Ruth Karpen and Margaret Gullette. The Big Move, which describe Wyatt-Brown’s life with her husband in continuing care. Dr. Chee will discuss her research on patients with dementia who participated in a story-telling intervention, which increased their meaningful engagement in their environment. Finally, Ms. Linda Davis will recall her long partnership with Kivnick and the results of the national study they conducted on the benefits of creativity interventions for at risk- older adults in HUD housing.
