Abstract:Journal of Humanistic Psychology, Ahead of Print. We all have the capacity to love, but the courage to do so must be cultivated! Once in a lifetime, if we are lucky, we meet that someone who has against insurmountable odds mastered the courage to love. One who doesn't simply talk it but whose very being exudes love. I consider myself of all people most fortunate to have befriended such a one in the person of Donna Rockwell. It is only through developing one's total personality to the capacity of loving one's neighbor with "true humility, courage, faith and discipline" that one attains the capacity to experience real love, and this should be considered a rare achievement. My friend, Donna Rockwell accomplished this! This little woman, small in stature yet a giant in the lives of so many, dared to love. And for this, Donna will forever be revered as a power-house in my life and in the field of Existential-Humanistic Psychology.

Abstract:It is with great sadness and even greater appreciation that I honor the legacy of Dr. Maureen Allwood, who died suddenly on March 4, 2024. Dr. Allwood joined the JTD Editorial Board this year and immediately began work as a co-editor for a forthcoming Special Issue on Inequalities, Intersectionality, and Dissociation. It was my privilege and a genuine pleasure to bring Dr. Allwood into the ISST-D family after her 20 years of groundbreaking work as a clinical scholar, translational research scientist, educator, therapist in practice, and advocate, spanning the fields of youth development and traumatic stress, trauma-informed approaches to juvenile justice and prevention services, and the intersection of historical, racial, ethnic identity-based, and intergenerational trauma, hate crimes, and violence.

Abstract:This article traces the career of dr Luchetti (1969–2021), noted physician, dedicated neuroscientist and a member of a renowned netherlands group working in the field of brain function and diseases. She was particularly involved in the study of natural compounds such as neurosteroids and their biosynthetic pathways in neurodegenerative and neuroinflammation related disorders, working on post-mortem human brains. This editorial outlines dr Luchetti's wide range of interests, acknowledges her superior fund of knowledge, and honors her humanitarian spirit - all of which contributed to create a great sense of belonging to any group of researchers where she worked with, and an impressive legacy of clinical achievements. The impact of dr Luchetti's work will continue to be felt for many years. From the bench to the bedside, her work has indirectly contributed to shed light on the neurosteroids potential therapeutic, considering that neurosteroids and their analogues, some of which are over-the-counter products, are now used to treat depression, epilepsy, and substance abuse disorder. Moreover, potential therapeutic effects of allopregnanolone related to its capability to promote neuroregeneration and neuroprotection are promising basis for future treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract:Receiving my doctorate in 1961 just as John F. Kennedy was inaugurated president of the United States, I was inspired by his sentiment that any person can make a difference, and every person should try. In this memoir I review my professional journey of trying to make a difference in researching, teaching, supervising, and practicing clinical psychology and psychotherapy. I began my career by working on an evidence base for projective techniques. Upon joining the Stony Brook faculty, I shifted my efforts to research on and practice of behavior therapy, and then to the incorporation of cognition in developing cognitive behavioral therapy. Further work on integration consisted of closing the gap between research and practice, lowering the barriers that existed across schools of therapy, and incorporating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues into mainstream psychology. Abstract:This article describes my recent carved wood sculptures of warrior women as a response to and reimagination of historical and mythological accounts of Amazons. I emphasize aspects of queerness and gender non-conformity in the figurative sculptures through iconographical details. This body of work is grounded in readings of classical mythology and popular culture, as well as reference to historical Amazons and women warriors in African and Indian cultures.

Abstract:Carlos Castillo-Chavez's tenure at Cornell University with Simon Levine, also marks the beginning of my life as his daughter. I was nine months old when I arrived to Ithaca, and my recollections of my father in elementary school and middle school were of him furiously writing equations at his desk, or outside on the chalk board in our shed, or on napkins, notepads or anything he could get his hands on at restaurants; but more likely than not, away. When I was young, my father was becoming the researcher that today makes him a three-time Presidential honoree, a member of Barak Obama's Presidential Committee on the National Medal of Science, and of course, the purpose of this volume. Even in those early days, he was away a lot--either traveling to conferences or increasingly as an invited lecturer, or at the office. Of course, I was still (and am) a daddy's little girl, bonded forever by a shared obsession with the same movies (The Godfather, My Name is Nobody, The Man from Snowy River); the same TV shows (Law and Order); and all things sports related, but I also knew that my father was a very busy man and his time was limited. So I would watch him work, often with my own little extra homework he would give me to keep me entertained, peck him on the check and let him know that I would take over his job when I was old enough.

Abstract:This is the fourth in a series of papers that provides an historical record in this journal of contributions made by the most influential figures in the field of stuttering. Ann Packman is an Australian researcher who will retire shortly. This paper reflects on her long and productive career, and her contributions to the field. With a background in literature, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and the brain and language, she became well equipped to contribute to understanding stuttering causality. That work, and an accompanying collection of basic and applied clinical research, was constantly grounded with the thoughts and feelings of those who stutter in the community.

Electric ladyland : women and rock culture

Abstract:With the explosion of rock music in the mid-1960s, women arrived-as performers, critics, and fans. While operating in radically different ways within rock culture, female musicians, journalists, and groupies rewrote women's roles on and off the stage in the 1960s and 1970s. Electric Ladyland is a social and cultural history of this formative era in rock and roll, examining how the changing roles of women were intertwined with the evolution of the music. Articles and reviews from Rolling Stone and the Village Voice provide a window on a time when female musicians such as Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell battled sexism from concert promoters and mainly male reviewers. Feminist rock journalists, however, were coming into their own. In particular, Ellen Willis, music critic for the New Yorker, and Lillian Roxon, author of the influential Rock Encyclopedia, transformed the way society perceived sometimes marginalized female performers. The groupie was born at the same time, and Rhodes devotes considerable attention to the rise of this phenomenon. Through journalistic accounts as well as personal interviews with groupies of the 1960s and 1970s, she explores these women's dual legacy of self-assertion and promiscuous behavior that resonates to this day through the popularity of such films as Almost Famous. Deeply informed by critical media studies and drawing on diverse and rich sources, Electric Ladyland assesses the lasting effects of cultural representations on female sexuality and gender roles.
