By putting a paper from the early years of the journal in conversation with contemporary readers and writers, we hope to dive into the ways in which psychoanalysts forge relationality in spaces of complexity and contradiction over time, as our experiences- collective, dyadic, or solitary – are always nonlinear and multiply configured. Abstract:The author emphasizes Adrienne Harris's skillful use of autobiographical material in his writing, an aspect that contributes to making it a remarkable essay. He also argues that any psychoanalytic writing about is invariably autobiographical, and that this is also the way, in Walter Benjamin's phrase, to move from mere chronicle to history. Nothing in a psychoanalytic essay tastes true unless it has first been immersed in the subjectivity of the narrator.

Abstract:Journal of Humanistic Psychology, Ahead of Print. We all have the capacity to love, but the courage to do so must be cultivated! Once in a lifetime, if we are lucky, we meet that someone who has against insurmountable odds mastered the courage to love. One who doesn't simply talk it but whose very being exudes love. I consider myself of all people most fortunate to have befriended such a one in the person of Donna Rockwell. It is only through developing one's total personality to the capacity of loving one's neighbor with "true humility, courage, faith and discipline" that one attains the capacity to experience real love, and this should be considered a rare achievement. My friend, Donna Rockwell accomplished this! This little woman, small in stature yet a giant in the lives of so many, dared to love. And for this, Donna will forever be revered as a power-house in my life and in the field of Existential-Humanistic Psychology.

Abstract:Adrienne Harris ́ "You Must Remember This" is a propeller to re-encounter the notion of " aprés coup ," a concept that continues to defy analysand's and analyst's archetypical constructions. Taking Harris' invitation to stroll between Tangiers and Casablanca, this piece offers a voyage from the landscape of personal stories to the possibilities within relational clinic, using the savvy of music, film, literature, and philosophy, coalesced in a couple of psychic polaroids. The first polaroid frames the enigmatic presence and movement of memory, the issue of what is it that insists in session. The second, snapshots the bending movements of time and space in liminal experiences at inter-subjective spaces (session-treatment), which demands the analyst to go beyond its own "I" to maintain liminal spaces open for radical alterity to manifest. Finally, the author focuses on the notion of emptiness to create new paths, which may demand the analyst to disown its omnipotence.

Abstract:The author describes her struggle with depression and borderline personality disorder, self-harm, and suicidality. She first reviews the long years during which she did not respond to any of the numerous antidepressant medications that were prescribed. She then describes how she finally achieved healing and good functioning as a result of long-term caring psychotherapy in the context of a strong therapeutic relationship in combination with medications that were found to be effective for her symptoms.

Abstract:Abstract This story stretches over a period of 21 years. It encompasses a range of interactions that include being friends, lovers, ex-lovers, and lovers again. The two women first met at college in the 1970s-Adrienne was 28, a student, single without any children, and Myra was 47, a lecturer, married with two adult sons. Today they live in Adelaide, South Australia. The catalyst that changed their lives was a ten-day walk when Myra was brave enough to talk about her feelings for Adrienne. The two years they were together wasan exciting and wonderful time for them both. But tensions within the relationship existed and reached crisis point when Adrienne had a relationship with another woman. They broke up then, and it took ten years before they decided to revisit their breakup by sitting down at a computer and working through some of the incidents, emotions, and barriers that had caused their feelings of anger, despair, alienation, and hope over this time. Although this 'work' on the computer was a breakthrough for both of them, it was still hard to meet and be comfortable with each other. It took another eight years to reestablish their relationship- first as friends and then as lovers.

Abstract:Description As healthcare workers, invested in the wellbeing of our patients while also hoping to grow as individuals, we sometimes tend to view our jobs as a rigid duality-we are either "in love" with our practice and persevere flawlessly through all hardship, or we are "burnt out," coldhearted, and defeated by the heavy workload and expectations of medicine. In reality, we all sit somewhere in the middle of a blurry spectrum, balancing out physical, mental, and emotional pain with the immense honor of saving and cherishing human life, while simultaneously struggling to reconcile our altruistic goals with realistic but necessary human incentives. I want this open-ended work to acknowledge these challenging but critical "and yet" moments, and I hope anyone who is reading it can connect to the words personally and find new insight, regardless of where they are in life.

Abstract:Feminism &Psychology, Ahead of Print. Using an autoethnographic approach, I reflect on and unpack my journey towards my doctoral research on queer South Africans of Indian descent. I demonstrate how my decision to become an insider-researcher forced me to confront personal resistances towards turning the academic gaze upon myself. Although my journey towards intersectional LGBTQ+ research began with a yearning for epistemic visibility, prompted by a curious search for psychological literature about people like me, I now grapple with a flip side—doing the emotional labour of visibility and managing my vulnerabilities. Drawing on Gloria Anzaldúa's feminist theory of Borderlands, I (re)conceptualize these vulnerabilities as vulnerable advantages, that is, liminal spaces of heightened reflexivity that can ignite psychopolitical potential in scholar-activism. I discuss and theorize the productive possibilities of these emotionally complex spaces by drawing on four interconnected life experiences related to the epistemic, ethical, artistic, and activist dimensions of vulnerabilities. I consider the emotional labour embedded in researching insider communities, and my anxieties about traversing through these psychosocial conflicts. I argue that reflecting on one's own vulnerabilities can provide researchers with unique perspectives as scholar-activists. These vulnerable advantages exist because of—not in spite of —one's initial trepidations as valuable psychopolitical and decolonial resources.

Abstract:Although positive emotions as a class can build interpersonal resources, recent evidence suggests a unique and direct role for gratitude. In the current research, we shine the spotlight on what happens between a grateful person and the benefactor to illuminate what can build a bridge between them. Specifically, we draw on work calling gratitude an “other-praising” emotion. In an original study and a conceptual replication that included two independent samples, couples had video-recorded conversations in which one member expressed gratitude to the other ( n = 370). Expresser’s other-praising behavior was robustly positively associated with the benefactor’s postinteraction perception of expresser responsiveness, personal good feelings in general, and felt loving in particular. Several practical and theoretical alternative explanations are ruled out. By clarifying the specific behavioral and subjective psychological mechanisms through which expressed gratitude promotes relationships, this work advances affective and relationship science, two domains that cut across disciplines within psychology.

Abstract:The belatedness of analytic writing and its effects on analytic processes are explored through the concepts of nachträglichkeit and thirdness . The temporal gap between being with and writing about functions as a meaningful pause filled with opportunities for investigating unconscious pathways to the analyst's countertransference. The significance of analytic narration in affecting specific psychoanalytic developments is explored. The theoretical framework utilizes the concept of après coup , which brings to light new meanings in an afterwardness of time. Aspects of analytical writing dynamics are discussed as equivalent to those of nachträglichkeit. Analysts also deploy thirdness in constructing presentations of clinical material. This could be an intrapsychic third or an external figure representing an internal introjected third. A clinical vignette demonstrates the enhanced understanding achieved by writing. It specifically assisted in exploring the analyst's enactment relating to change in the setting, the background for which was a move to online analysis. This evoked infantile anxieties and painful confusions about loss. Historically, the patient had to navigate a path through miasmic ambiguities between reality and phantasy, truths and lies. A conclusion is reached, arguing that analytic processes extend beyond the duration of sessions, and that the processes of clinical writing can provide a significant contribution.

Abstract:The many ways that "service to the profession" is manifested at the Nordic Journal of Music Therapy are ever present, with our Editorial team and reviewers undertaking significant work to support authors in disseminating their research and perspectives to a high standard. As Bill Matney noted in his recent Editorial, "Review, whether done by oneself or with others, is a process that can facilitate growth and understanding" (Matney, Citation 2024 , p. 241). I certainly agree. Alongside this, our Editorial team has often reflected together on the complexity involved in this form of professional service, which prompted us to lead a symposium at the 2024 Nordic Music Therapy Conference (NMTC) in Aalborg, Denmark, titled "The art of peer review and author response in music therapy publications". We wanted to share our perspectives on this topic, to dialogue with current reviewers and authors, and also to hear perspectives from possible future authors and reviewers.
