He was a strong man in his faith and convictions, a kind and helpful friend, attentive and open-minded in discussions, creative, profound and sophisticated in understanding the flow of life and science. He left an unforgettable mark on our hearts and personal memories. His way of thinking left an imprint on students, young scientists and co-workers. We accompany all that with warm farewell applause as an appreciation of Stefan’s way and effects throughout his life.

Abstract:Sergio Adamo prematurely left us on January 7th 2022, just one year after his retirement, leaving his family, friends and colleagues deeply sad and grieving. Sergio was a full Professor of Histology and Embryology at the Sapienza University of Rome. Since the foundation of the Institute of Histology and Embryology more than 50 years ago, he dedicated himself to the institution, research, and teaching with integrity, generosity, and a great sense of teamwork. Sergio's main research interests have been the mechanisms of myogenesis, muscle homeostasis and regeneration under normal and pathological conditions. Most relevant results obtained by Sergio and his collaborators indicate novel functions for the neurohypophyseal hormones, vasopressin and oxytocin, upon striated muscle differentiation, trophism, and homeostasis. Here we like to give the proper tribute to a mentor, a colleague and a sincere friend. He left an indelible mark on the professional and personal lives of all of us and his absence provokes a profound sense of emptiness.

Abstract:This invited editorial celebrates the distinguished professional life of Professor Kevin D. Tipton, who sadly passed away on January 9, 2022. Professor Tipton made an outstanding contribution to the scientific field of sport nutrition and exercise metabolism over an exceptional 30-year career. He dedicated his academic career to understanding the response of muscle protein metabolism to exercise and nutrition. The impact of his work is far-reaching with application to athletes in terms of promoting training adaptation, recovery, and performance, alongside clinical implications for injury management and healthy aging. Notable scientific contributions included the first in vivo human study to demonstrate the role of orally ingested essential amino acids in stimulating muscle protein synthesis during acute post-exercise recovery. This finding laid the foundation for future studies to interrogate the response of muscle protein synthesis to the ingestion of different protein types. Professor Tipton's work also included investigating the maximally effective dose and timing (regarding exercise) of ingested protein for the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis. Kevin will be remembered fondly by academics, applied scientists, and students across the sport nutrition and exercise metabolism community as a leading researcher in the field, a critical thinker, and an inspirational teacher. His mission was to educate the next generation of exercise scientists by sharing his distinct wealth of knowledge accrued over three decades. Above all else, Kevin was kind, generous (with his time and knowledge), honest, and incredibly social. He was a unique character and will be greatly missed among our community but certainly never forgotten.

She was a driving force in the laboratory guiding research and screening for inborn errors of metabolism, while she was a great supervisor. Just being retired she passed away in January 2023.

Abstract:With great sadness we learned that our friend, colleague and former PISC-Member Burkhard Jüttner passed away in 2020 at age 82. We like to honor him as a major contributor to the science and technology of vacuum arcs for more than 40 years of his professional life. From the 1970s, living in East Berlin and working at the Academy of Sciences, Burkhard made significant contributions to our field, and was among the first, if not the first, to investigate cathode spot phenomena under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. This is especially remarkable given the limited technical opportunities of East Germany. He published extensively and produced many highly cited papers and book chapters. For his pioneering work he received the Walter P. Dyke Award at the 1994 ISDEIV (Moscow - St. Petersburg, Russia). He continued to work in the 1990s and wrote important papers into the 2000s. Burkhard was also mentor and role model to many in the field of vacuum breakdown and vacuum arcs. He has positively affected many lives, professionally and personally. This was particularly relevant at times of change related to the fall of the Berlin Wall, after which East German science was reformed and integrated in the greater science community. He always helped to improve connections and understanding between East and West.

Abstract:On Saturday 26 September, around 4am, John Barrow died aged 67, with his wife Elizabeth and son Roger at his side. From a scientific perspective, it is hard to conceive a more premature end. During lockdown alone, whilst undergoing chemotherapy and in the full knowledge that his cancer was inoperable, John managed to co-author 11 scientific papers and write a new book ("One Plus One"). Even by his own standards of productivity, this is staggeringly impressive, an achievement he was openly proud of. From a broader perspective, with a wife, 3 children and 5 young grandchildren, many strong friendships, and so much more to offer the world, he departed far too soon.

Revisiting atomic collisions physics with highly charged ions, a tribute to Michel Barat

Abstract:Michel Barat passed away in November 2018 at the age of 80 after a rich career in atomic and molecular collisions. He had participated actively in formalizing the electron promotion model, contribuing to low energy reactive collisions at the frontier of chemistry. He investigated electron capture mechanisms by highly charged ions (HCI), switched to collision induced cluster dissociation and finally to UV laser induced fragmentation mechanisms of biological molecules. During this highly active time he created a laboratory, organized ICPEAC and participated actively in the administration of research. This paper covers the 10 years when he mentored my scientific activity in the blossoming field of electron capture by HCI. In spite of an impressive number of open channels, Michel found a way to capture the important parameters and to simplify the description of several electron capture processes; orientation propensity, electron promotion, true double electron capture, transfer ionisation, transfer excitation, formation of Rydberg states, and electron capture by metastable states. Each time Michel established fruitful collaborations with other groups.

SBP’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Robert A. C. Stewart was privileged to have Dr. Rosenthal as one of his professors while a graduate student at Harvard University in 1964–1965. He well remembers Dr. Rosenthal’s easy, inviting manner as a person. Having chosen to join our Board in the early years of the journal, Dr. Rosenthal was to remain, over the decades, a valued member of our advisory team until his death early this year.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A memorial tribute detailing the life and scientific accomplishments of Frank A. L. Anet, a pioneer of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy who discovered bedrock principles in organic chemistry and magnetic resonance. He was the first to show that nuclear Overhauser effects could provide structural information, significantly impacting future NMR applications. In the 1960s and 1970s, he built entire multinuclear NMR spectrometers operating as high as 396 MHz for protons, detecting nuclei inaccessible to commercial instruments, and operating at very low temperatures for studying molecular structure and dynamics. A titan of physical organic chemistry, Frank made important contributions in the areas of conformational analysis, stereochemistry, isotope effects, NMR relaxation theory, and chemical origins of life.

Abstract:Leonid Keldysh -- one of the most influential theoretical physicists of the 20th century -- passed away in November 2016. Keldysh is best known for the diagrammatic formulation of real-time (nonequilibrium) Green functions theory and for the theory of strong field ionization of atoms. Both theories profoundly changed large areas of theoretical physics and stimulated important experiments. Both these discoveries emerged almost simultaneously -- like Einstein, also Keldysh had his \textit{annus mirabilis} -- the year 1964. But the list of his theoretical developments is much broader and is briefly reviewed here.
