Abstract:It is our real pain to write this article, remembering years of friendship and scientific collaboration with Stefan Sokołowski, who passed away on the 24th of June 2024. He was a strong man in his faith and convictions, a kind and helpful friend, attentive and open-minded in discussions, creative, profound and sophisticated in understanding the flow of life and science. He left an unforgettable mark on our hearts and personal memories. His way of thinking left an imprint on students, young scientists and co-workers. We accompany all that with warm farewell applause as an appreciation of Stefan’s way and effects throughout his life.

Abstract:This special issue of the Astroparticle Physics journal is dedicated to the memory of Thomas Korff Gaisser, the Martin A. Pomerantz Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Delaware. Tom was one of the most prominent scientists in cosmic-ray and astroparticle physics, and also one of the founding editors of this very journal. A theoretical particle physicist by training, he dedicated his career to cosmic-ray physics. He worked on the phenomenology of high-energy particle interactions in the atmosphere, modeling extensive air showers, including the famous 'Gaisser-Hillas' function describing their longitudinal profile. A focus of his work were muon and neutrino fluxes resulting from cosmic-ray showers in the atmosphere, and their measurement with specialized experiments at the South Pole.

Abstract:Roberto Saracco passed away in early December 2023. As a long-time volunteer, Roberto had been a visionary for the IEEE Communications Society, for IEEE and for industry. His visions of future technology later came to pass in reality. For many years his daily blog reported news on innovations, technology, challenges and impact drawing a significant readership. Along these lines he has produced over 20 ebooks on technology evolution and impact that are available through IEEE. His presentations on technology trends were always extremely popular. As a ComSoc leader, he greatly extended the Society's reach to sister societies around the world.

Abstract:With great sadness we learned that our friend, colleague and former PISC-Member Burkhard Jüttner passed away in 2020 at age 82. We like to honor him as a major contributor to the science and technology of vacuum arcs for more than 40 years of his professional life. From the 1970s, living in East Berlin and working at the Academy of Sciences, Burkhard made significant contributions to our field, and was among the first, if not the first, to investigate cathode spot phenomena under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. This is especially remarkable given the limited technical opportunities of East Germany. He published extensively and produced many highly cited papers and book chapters. For his pioneering work he received the Walter P. Dyke Award at the 1994 ISDEIV (Moscow - St. Petersburg, Russia). He continued to work in the 1990s and wrote important papers into the 2000s. Burkhard was also mentor and role model to many in the field of vacuum breakdown and vacuum arcs. He has positively affected many lives, professionally and personally. This was particularly relevant at times of change related to the fall of the Berlin Wall, after which East German science was reformed and integrated in the greater science community. He always helped to improve connections and understanding between East and West.

Abstract:Leonid Keldysh -- one of the most influential theoretical physicists of the 20th century -- passed away in November 2016. Keldysh is best known for the diagrammatic formulation of real-time (nonequilibrium) Green functions theory and for the theory of strong field ionization of atoms. Both theories profoundly changed large areas of theoretical physics and stimulated important experiments. Both these discoveries emerged almost simultaneously -- like Einstein, also Keldysh had his \textit{annus mirabilis} -- the year 1964. But the list of his theoretical developments is much broader and is briefly reviewed here.

Abstract:Angelos Katakouzenos, a Greek neurologist and prolific medical writer at the beginning of the 20th century, belonged to a group of artists and scholars that formed the "generation of the 30s," a cultural movement that emerged after World War I and introduced modernism in Greek art and literature. Born in 1902, Katakouzenos studied medicine in France at the Universities of Montpellier and Paris, where he trained in neurology and -psychiatry under Georges Guillain, Henri Claude, Jean-Athanase Sicard, Pierre Marie, Clovis Vincent and Théophile -Alajouanine. In Paris, he attended to Freud's patients, collaborating with the psychoanalyst Marie Bonaparte, while he was introduced to the contemporary avant-garde movements of this time, developing long-lasting friendships with artists and intellectuals, including Marc Chagall and Tériade. Although Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of -Paris, Commandeur of the Légion d'honneur and founder of the first neuropsychiatric clinics in Greece, Katakouzenos lived far from the limelight. Despite his numerous publications, his scientific work remained largely unacknowledged. Yet, as a -psychoanalyst he gained international fame and treated patients including William Faulkner who later would write, "To the wise scientist, the in-depth judge of the human soul, my friend Dr. Katakouzenos, who has helped me like no one else to redeem myself from the tortuous questions that troubled me for years - from the depths of my heart, many, very many thanks". In this paper, the rediscovery of Katakouzenos's remarkable work in the field of neuroscience aims to tell the story of a great physician whose lifework in bridging art and science may, in retrospect, reinstate him as one of the most captivating neurologists of the 20th century.

Abstract:<span>A 90th birthday would be a milestone celebration for any person, but exceptionally rare if the person is still active after 75 years of working and serving the photogrammetric and remote sensing communities worldwide. This unprecedented career is the motivation to reflect on the technological developments of the past 75 years in the light of Gottfried Konecny's lifetime achievements. I started to get to know Gottfried not long before he officially retired from the Institute for Photogrammetry and Engineering Surveys in 1998. Furthermore, I was not even born when he, as a young and talented scholar supported by the Fulbright Scholarship from the US Government, arrived at the Ohio State University (OSU), which has been my professional home for three decades. In the second half of Gottfried's 75-year career, the technological changes have been phenomenal, and, furthermore, shown an accelerating trend in the past few years. It is absolutely remarkable how Gottfried has been able to keep up with these rapid changes and advancing technologies and exploits them for mapping and, in general, for all the users of the geospatial field at large. Additionally, his open-minded and kind personality has been always a major plus to his technical skills and experiences, and ultimately helped him assist many colleagues to advance their careers, and along the way developed and increased the use of geospatial data and systems in support of many countries worldwide.</span>

Abstract:Noel Frederick Smyth (NFS), a Fellow of the Australian Mathematical Society and a Professor of Nonlinear Waves in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, passed away on February 5, 2023. NFS was a prominent figure among applied mathematicians who worked on nonlinear wave theory in a broad range of areas. Throughout his academic career, which spanned nearly forty years, NFS developed mathematical models, ideas, and techniques that have had a large impact on the understanding of wave motion in diverse media. His major research emphasis primarily involved the propagation of solitary waves, or solitons, and dispersive shock waves, or undular bores, in various media, including optical fibers, liquid crystals, shallow waters and atmosphere. Several approaches he developed have proven effective in analyzing the dynamics and modulations of related wave phenomena. This tribute in the journal of Wave Motion aims to provide a brief biographical sketch of NFS, discuss his major research achievements, showcase his scientific competence, untiring mentorship and unwavering dedication, as well as share final thoughts from his former students, colleagues, friends, and family. The authors had a special connection with NFS on both on personal and professional levels and hold deep gratitude for him and his invaluable work. In recognition of his achievements in applied mathematics, Wave Motion hosts a Special Issue entitled "Modelling Nonlinear Wave Phenomena: From Theory to Applications," which presents the recent advancements in this field.
