Abstract:The communications and computing industries are challenged to fasten and enlarge information exchange. The electrical chip routing challenges in the computer industry have driven the interest for silicon photonics. The idea is to integrate photonic circuits into a standard microelectronics process. In this paper we will review the status of the field and report on our progresses. In Trento we are using nanocrystalline silicon to change the dimensionality of silicon so that very fascinating and new optical properties of the material appear. In particular, light emission starts to be a very efficient process in nanostructured silicon and light emitting diodes with high efficiency have been fabricated. We will discuss some of the main research lines. These cover a wide spectral range spanning from visible to infrared. Light sources, modulators, waveguides, logical gates are a few examples of the various photonic devices which have been developed based on silicon nanocrystals.

Abstract:The 14th Electromagnetic and Light Scattering Conference (ELS-XIV) was held at the Universit de Lille 1, Villeneuve d'Ascq, France on 17-21 June 2013. The conference was attended by 200 scientists from 26 countries. The scientific program included one plenary lecture, 12 invited reviews, 100 contributed oral talks, and 86 poster presentations. The program, the abstracts, and the slides of the oral presentations are available at the conference web site http:www-loa.univ-lille1.frELS-XIV. To highlight one of the traditional ELS themes, the ELS-XIV featured a special session on Remote sensing of aerosols and clouds using polarimetric observations. This session was sponsored and co-organized by the French space agency CNES and attracted representatives from nearly all research teams word-wide involved in the development and active use of space-borne, in situ, and ground-based polarimetric observations.

Abstract:In this invited talk at the ``historical'' session of PHOTON2005, I was asked to recount the history and the development, from its earliest days to the present, of the idea of photon colliders based on conversion of high energy electrons to high-energy photons at a future high-energy linear e+e- collider. Described in this talk are the general features and schemes of a photon collider, the evolution in understanding of what the parameters of a realistic photon collider are, possible solutions of various technical problems, the physics motivation, and the present status of photon-collider development. For a more detailed description of the photon collider at the ILC and a discussion of the associated technical issues, please refer to my talks at PLC2005, the conference that immediately followed PHOTON2005 (to be published in Acta Physica Polonica B as well).

Abstract:The relationship between two important problems in tree pattern matching, the largest common subtree and the smallest common supertree problems, is established by means of simple constructions, which allow one to obtain a largest common subtree of two trees from a smallest common supertree of them, and vice versa. These constructions are the same for isomorphic, homeomorphic, topological, and minor embeddings, they take only time linear in the size of the trees, and they turn out to have a clear algebraic meaning.

Abstract:Topological photonics seeks to control the behaviour of the light through the design of protected topological modes in photonic structures. While this approach originated from studying the behaviour of electrons in solid-state materials, it has since blossomed into a field that is at the very forefront of the search for new topological types of matter. This can have real implications for future technologies by harnessing the robustness of topological photonics for applications in photonics devices. This roadmap surveys some of the main emerging areas of research within topological photonics, with a special attention to questions in fundamental science, which photonics is in an ideal position to address. Each section provides an overview of the current and future challenges within a part of the field, highlighting the most exciting opportunities for future research and developments.

Abstract:Beams of photons with energies ranging from a few hundred keV to a few tens of MeV have proven to be very usefull tools for studying a variety of nuclear structures and their properties. The peculiar features of photons allow for unique insights and precision. This contribution provides a collection of nuclear structure phenomena that are well accessible with photon beams and instructional examples for seminal experiments that have advanced nuclear structure research in the past using photons in the entrance channel. It is meant to complement the contents of other contributions highlighting the scientific and technological potential of the emerging field of Nuclear Photonics .

Abstract:Photons, the individual quanta of the light field, are what the science of quantum photonics is dedicatedly investigating. The manipulation and coherent control of photons in quantum photonics enables the exploration of various quantum phenomena of high fundamental interest. In the meantime, due to the fast speed and a lack of the interaction with the environment, photons are now regarded as a promising platform for the emerging quantum information processing (QIP) studies. Therefore, there is a growing number of works on quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum metrology that are solidly based on the techniques of quantum photonics.

Abstract:Abstract Photon sciences and technologies establish the building blocks for myriad scientific and engineering frontiers in life and energy sciences. Because of their overarching functionality, the developmental roadmap and opportunities underpinned by photonics are often semiotically mediated by the delineation of subject areas of application. In this perspective article, we map current and emerging linkages between three intersecting areas of research stewarded by advanced photonics technologies, namely light by design, outlined as (a) quantum and structured photonics, (b) light–matter interactions in accelerators and accelerator-based light sources, and (c) ultrafast sciences and quantum molecular dynamics. In each section, we will concentrate on state-of-the-art achievements and present prospective applications in life sciences, biochemistry, quantum optics and information sciences, and environmental and chemical engineering, all founded on a broad range of photon sources and methodologies. We hope that this interconnected mapping of challenges and opportunities seeds new concepts, theory, and experiments in the advancement of ultrafast photon sciences and light–matter interactions. Through this mapping, we hope to inspire a critically interdisciplinary approach to the science and applications of light by design.

Abstract:When impinging on optical structures or passing in their vicinity, free electrons can spontaneously emit electromagnetic radiation, a phenomenon generally known as cathodoluminescence. Free-electron radiation comes in many guises: Cherenkov, transition, and Smith–Purcell radiation, but also electron scintillation, commonly referred to as incoherent cathodoluminescence. While those effects have been at the heart of many fundamental discoveries and technological developments in high-energy physics in the past century, their recent demonstration in photonic and nanophotonic systems has attracted a great deal of attention. Those developments arose from predictions that exploit nanophotonics for novel radiation regimes, now becoming accessible thanks to advances in nanofabrication. In general, the proper design of nanophotonic structures can enable shaping, control, and enhancement of free-electron radiation, for any of the above-mentioned effects. Free-electron radiation in nanophotonics opens the way to promising applications, such as widely tunable integrated light sources from x-ray to THz frequencies, miniaturized particle accelerators, and highly sensitive high-energy particle detectors. Here, we review the emerging field of free-electron radiation in nanophotonics. We first present a general, unified framework to describe free-electron light–matter interaction in arbitrary nanophotonic systems. We then show how this framework sheds light on the physical underpinnings of many methods in the field used to control and enhance free-electron radiation. Namely, the framework points to the central role played by the photonic eigenmodes in controlling the output properties of free-electron radiation (e.g., frequency, directionality, and polarization). We then review experimental techniques to characterize free-electron radiation in scanning and transmission electron microscopes, which have emerged as the central platforms for experimental realization of the phenomena described in this review. We further discuss various experimental methods to control and extract spectral, angular, and polarization-resolved information on free-electron radiation. We conclude this review by outlining novel directions for this field, including ultrafast and quantum effects in free-electron radiation, tunable short-wavelength emitters in the ultraviolet and soft x-ray regimes, and free-electron radiation from topological states in photonic crystals.
