Abstract:A summary of the experimental results of the TOP2014 International Workshop in Cannes, France, is presented. This inspiring conference clearly showed the richness and diversity of top-quark physics research. Results cover a very broad spectrum of analyses involving studies of the strong and electroweak interactions of the top quark, high-precision measurements of intrinsic top-quark properties, developments of new tools in top-quark analyses, observations of new Standard Model processes, the interaction between the top quark and the Higgs boson and sensitive searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract:In this invited talk at the ``historical'' session of PHOTON2005, I was asked to recount the history and the development, from its earliest days to the present, of the idea of photon colliders based on conversion of high energy electrons to high-energy photons at a future high-energy linear e+e- collider. Described in this talk are the general features and schemes of a photon collider, the evolution in understanding of what the parameters of a realistic photon collider are, possible solutions of various technical problems, the physics motivation, and the present status of photon-collider development. For a more detailed description of the photon collider at the ILC and a discussion of the associated technical issues, please refer to my talks at PLC2005, the conference that immediately followed PHOTON2005 (to be published in Acta Physica Polonica B as well).

Abstract:Our knowledge about the structure of matter and the nature of the interactions between its constituent components follows a hierarchy that closely tracks the evolution of experimental measurements from low to higher and higher energies. For example, with an electron beam of a given energy, one can access the microscopic structure of matter at length scales corresponding to the de-Brogie wave length of the electrons that are being used: λ = 2π × 197.3 Mev·fm/Eγ, were Eγ is the energy of the photon that is exchanged in the experimentally observed process. As the energy of the beams that are available get higher and higher, the sizes of objects that can be probed get smaller and smaller…

The large statistics provided by the LHC are allowing us to measure processes never observed before and to develop new methods to improve the precision for the "bread-and-butter" measurements. Abstract:We review the literature on possible violations of the superposition principle for electromagnetic fields in vacuum from the earliest studies until the emergence of renormalized QED at the end of the 1940's. The exposition covers experimental work on photon-photon scattering and the propagation of light in external electromagnetic fields and relevant theoretical work on nonlinear electrodynamic theories (Born-Infeld theory and QED) until the year 1949. To enrich the picture, pieces of reminiscences from a number of (theoretical) physicists on their work in this field are collected and included or appended.

Abstract:The relationship between two important problems in tree pattern matching, the largest common subtree and the smallest common supertree problems, is established by means of simple constructions, which allow one to obtain a largest common subtree of two trees from a smallest common supertree of them, and vice versa. These constructions are the same for isomorphic, homeomorphic, topological, and minor embeddings, they take only time linear in the size of the trees, and they turn out to have a clear algebraic meaning.

Abstract:In over forty presentations on experiments at the 2012 conference on Flavor Physics and CP Violation (FPCP 2012), there was an abundance of beautiful and significant results. This summary of these experiment presentations begins with a reminder of the context in which the measurements have been made and the motivations for making the specific measurements reported at the symposium. Given the number and breadth of physics topics covered at the meeting, this review covers only a limited set of highlights, sort of a traveler's set of souvenir postcards of favorite slides. The selected slides are grouped into eight overlapping categories as an aid to flipping through the postcards and being reminded of the high points of the conference. Finally, there are some summarizing comments about how the experiment results presented here compare to expectations and what we may hope for the future.

Abstract:Beams of photons with energies ranging from a few hundred keV to a few tens of MeV have proven to be very usefull tools for studying a variety of nuclear structures and their properties. The peculiar features of photons allow for unique insights and precision. This contribution provides a collection of nuclear structure phenomena that are well accessible with photon beams and instructional examples for seminal experiments that have advanced nuclear structure research in the past using photons in the entrance channel. It is meant to complement the contents of other contributions highlighting the scientific and technological potential of the emerging field of Nuclear Photonics .

Abstract:This report summarizes the work of the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force on "Real and Virtual Photon Production at Ultra-Low Transverse Momentum and Low Mass at the LHC". We provide an overview of the soft-photon puzzle, i.e., of the long-standing discrepancy between experimental data and predictions based on Low's soft-photon theorem, also referred to as "anomalous" soft photon production, and we review the current theoretical understanding of soft radiation and soft theorems. We also focus on low-mass dileptons as a tool for determining the electrical conductivity of the medium produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. We discuss how both topics can be addressed with the planned ALICE 3 detector at the LHC.
