Abstract:Hadronic diffraction has become a hot and fashionable subject in recent years due to the great interest triggered by the HERA and Tevatron data. These data have helped to put the field in a different perspective paving the road to a hopefully more complete understanding than hitherto achieved. The forthcoming data in the next few years from even higher energies (LHC) promise to sustain this interest for a long time. It is, therefore, necessary to provide the younger generations with as complete as possible discussion of the main developments that have marked the growth of high energy diffractive physics in the past and to assess the present state of the art. For this reason, this part will be by far the largest. The analysis of the relationship between conventional diffractive physics and the low-x physics from deep inelastic scattering will allow us also to review the instruments which could help to understand the developments we can expect from the future.

Abstract:In these lectures, we present and discuss the most recent results on inclusive diffraction from the HERA and Tevatron colliders and give the prospects for the future at the LHC. Of special interest is the exclusive production of Higgs boson and heavy objects ($W$, top, stop pairs) which will require a better understanding of diffractive events and the link between $ep$ and hadronic colliders, as well as precise measurements and analyses of inclusive diffraction at the LHC in particular to constrain further the gluon density in the pomeron.

Scattering from an external field in quantum chromodynamics at high energies: from foundations to interdisciplinary connections

Abstract:We review the factorization of the $S$-matrix elements in the context of particle scattering off an external field, which can serve as a model for the field of a large nucleus. The factorization takes the form of a convolution of light cone wave functions describing the physical incoming and outgoing states in terms of bare partons, and products of Wilson lines. The latter represent the interaction between the bare partons and the external field. Specializing to elastic scattering amplitudes of onia at very high energies, we introduce the color dipole model, which formulates the calculation of the modulus-squared of the wave functions in quantum chromodynamics with the help of a branching random walk, and the scattering amplitudes as observables on this classical stochastic process. Methods developed for general branching processes produce analytical formulas for the asymptotics of such observables, and thus enable one to derive exact large-rapidity expressions for onium-nucleus cross sections, from which electron-nucleus cross sections may be inferred.

Abstract:It has been recently understood how to deal with high-energy scattering beyond the mean field approximation. We review some of the main steps of this theoretical progress, like the role of Lorentz invariance and unitarity requirements, the importance of discreteness and fluctuations of gluon numbers (Pomeron loops), the high-energy QCD/statistical physics correspondence and the consequences for the saturation scale, the scattering amplitude and other, also measurable, quantities.

Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. Examples and comparisons with experimental data from LEP, HERA, and Tevatron are also covered.

Abstract:We present a theoretical formulation for the multiphoton diffraction phenomenology in the nonrelativistic limit, suitable for interpreting high-energy x-ray diffraction measurements using synchrotron radiation sources. A hierarchy of approximations and the systematic analysis of limiting cases are presented. A convolutional representation of the diffraction signal allows classification of the physical resources contributing to the correlation signatures. The formulation is intended for developing a theoretical description capable of describing plausible absence or presence of correlation signatures in elastic and inelastic diffractive scattering. Interpreting these correlation signatures in terms of the incoming field modulated many-body electronic density correlations provides a novel perspective for structural imaging studies. More essentially, it offers a framework necessary for theoretical developments of associated reconstruction algorithms.

Abstract:These lectures stress the theoretical elements that underlie a wide range of phenomenological studies of high-energy QCD, which include both soft and hard processes. After a brief introduction to the basics of QCD, various aspects of QCD-based phenomenology are covered: colour transparency, hadronization of colour charges, Regge phenomenology, parton model, Bjorken scaling and its violation, DGLAP evolution equation, BFKL formalism, GLR-MQ evolution equation and saturation. In the last part of the lecture, we employ the light-cone dipole formalism to describe deep inelastic lepton scattering, Drell-Yan processes, direct photon production, diffraction, quark and gluon shadowing in nuclei, the Cronin effect and nuclear broadening.

Abstract:We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC.

Abstract:A distorted wave approximation has been used to formulate tensor expressions for the scattering amplitude of high energy electrons by an assembly of atoms. When the tensor expressions are applied to either reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) or transmission high energy electron diffraction (THEED) geometry, it is shown that the standard method of least-squares refinement can be used to solve surface structure directly.

Abstract:The problem of scattering of high-energy electrons by solids is formulated on the basis of a kinetic equation (KE) for the one-particle density matrix. This equation provides a general treatment of spatial and temporal coherence of electrons and takes account of both elastic and inelastic scattering for arbitrary geometry of diffraction. Formulating the KE, we prove that if the energy of an electron is sufficiently high (E approximately 100 keV), the problem of multiple elastic and inelastic scattering by a solid is entirely determined by two universal functions, namely, the Coulomb potential averaged over the motion of the crystal particles and the mixed dynamic form factor of inelastic excitations, which is related to the time-dependent correlation function of the positions of electrons and nuclei in a solid. We show that in all the diffraction experiments the scattering cross section contains information about both these functions and discuss the possibility of their separate determination. The KE method generalizes previous theoretical approaches to the description of multiple inelastic scattering of high-energy electrons, and in the case of single inelastic interactions the solution of the KE reduces to the distorted-wave approximation. As an illustration, we consider an application of the KE to the problem of multiple scattering of high-energy electrons by collective electronic excitations of a crystal. Numerical solution of the KE is shown to be consistent with experimental observations, and evidence is found for the existence of a mechanism of damping of coherence by small-angle inelastic scattering of high-energy electrons by a crystal.

Abstract:I review recent applications of two-particle intensity interferometry in high energy physics, concentrating on relativistic heavy ion collisions. By measuring hadronic single-particle spectra and two-particle correlations in hadron-hadron or heavy-ion collisions, the size and dynamical state of the collision fireball at freeze-out can be reconstructed. I discuss the relevant theoretical methods and their limitations. By applying the formalism to recent pion correlation data from Pb+Pb collisions at CERN we demonstrate that the collision zone has undergone strong transverse growth before freeze-out (by a factor 2 in each direction), and that it expands both longitudinally and transversally. From the thermal and flow energy density at freeze-out the energy density at the onset of transverse expansion can be estimated from conservation laws. It comfortably exceeds the critical value for the transition to color deconfined matter.
