Abstract:We review our ongoing theoretical and phenomenological study of the discovery potential for instanton-induced events in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at HERA. Constraints from recent lattice simulations will be exploited and translated into a ``fiducial'' kinematical region for our predictions of the instanton-induced DIS cross-section.

Abstract:Momentum distributions of secondary hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) are studied for both current and target fragmentation regions. They are shown to contain interesting information on several important questions of hadroproduction dynamics such as target stucture and hadronization mechanism. Special emphasis is given to the HERA kinematical region.

Abstract:Copper nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and zero field nuclear magnetic resonance (ZFNMR) studies of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ show that a magnetic phase appears in underdoped 123 superconductors treated in ambient wet air. The studies give convincing evidence that the ``empty'' CuO chains play the role of easy water insertion channels. The reaction occurs first in ordered regions of the crystallites. The final product of the reaction is a non-superconducting antiferromagnetic compound characterized by at least two types of magnetically ordered copper ions with ZFNMR spectra respectively in the frequency ranges of 46-96 and 96-135 MHz respectively. Even for powder samples fixed in an epoxy resin, the reaction is found to occur partly after a few years.

Abstract:The cross section for deep inelastic lepton-proton scattering (DIS) ℓ p → ℓ ′ X includes a diffractive deep inelastic (DDIS) contribution ℓ p → ℓ ′ p ′ X , in which the proton remains intact with a large longitudinal momentum fraction x F greater than 0.9 and small transverse momentum. The DDIS events, which can be identified with Pomeron exchange in the t-channel, account for approximately 10% of all of the DIS events. Thus, when one measures DIS, one automatically includes the leading-twist Bjorken-scaling DDIS events as a contribution to the DIS cross section, whether or not the final-state proton p ′ is detected. In such events, the missing momentum fraction x p ′ ∼ 0.9 carried by the final-state proton p ′ in the DDIS events could be misidentified with the light-front momentum fraction carried by sea quarks or gluons in the protons' Fock structure. As we shall show in this article, the underlying QCD Pomeron-exchange amplitude which produces the DDIS events does not obey the operator product expansion nor satisfy momentum sum rules. Thus we conclude that the quark and gluon distributions measured in DIS experiments will be misidentified, unless the measurements explicitly exclude the DDIS events and that a correct determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) derived from the DIS data requires the explicit subtraction of the DDIS contribution from the full DIS cross section.

They give us the first opportunity to understand high energy diffractive physics in terms of a fundamental theory, i.e. QCD. A review of the main results from H1 and ZEUS in this field is presented and the relation with the proton structure function at small x-Bjorken values is discussed.

Abstract:The unparticle stuff scenario related to the nontrivial IR fixed point in 4D-conformal field theory was recently suggested by Georgi. We illustrate its physical effects in the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) process. The possible signals of the unparticle related to parity violation asymmetry in DIS is investigated. It is found out that the behavior of this parity violation signal is sensitive to the value of the scale dimension d(u) of the unparticle.

Abstract:In the first chapter we give an introduction to hard diffractive scattering in QCD to introduce basic concepts and terminology. In the second chapter we make predictions for the evolution of skewed parton distributions in a proton in the LLA. We calculate the DGLAP-type evolution kernels in the LLA and solve the skewed GLAP evolution equations with a modified version of the CTEQ-package. In the third chapter, we discuss the algorithms used in the LO evolution program for skewed parton distributions in the DGLAP region, discuss the stability of the code and reproduce the LO diagonal evolution within less than 0.5% of the original CTEQ-code. In chapter 4, we show that factorization holds for the deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitude in QCD, up to power suppressed terms, to all orders in perturbation theory. In chapter 5, we demonstrate that perturbative QCD allows one to calculate the absolute cross section of diffractive, exclusive production of photons (DVCS) at large $Q^2$ at HERA, while the aligned jet model allows one to estimate the cross section for intermediate $Q^2 \sim 2 GeV^2$. We find a significant DVCS counting rate for the current generation of experiments at HERA and a large azimuthal angle asymmetry for HERA kinematics. In the last chapter, we propose a new methodology of gaining shape fits to skewed parton distributions and, for the first time, to determine the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the DIS amplitude. We do this by using several recent fits to $F_2(x,Q^2)$ to compute the asymmetry $A$ for the combined DVCS and Bethe-Heitler cross section. In the appendix, we give an application of distributional methods as discussed abstractly in chapter 4.

Abstract:A systematic study is made of the non-perturbative effects in quantum chromodynamics. The basic object is the two-point functions of various currents. At large Euclidean momenta q the non-perturbative contributions induce a series in (μ2/q2) where μ is some typical hadronic mass. The terms of this series are shown to be of two distinct types. The first few of them are connected with vacuum fluctuations of large size, and can be consistently accounted for within the Wilson operator expansion. On the other hand, in high orders small-size fluctuations show up and the high-order terms do not reduce (generally speaking) to the vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements of local operators. This signals the breakdown of the operator expansion. The corresponding critical dimension is found. We propose a Borel improvement of the power series. On one hand, it makes the two-point functions less sensitive to high-order terms, and on the other hand, it transforms the standard dispersion representation into a certain integral representation with exponential weight functions. As a result we obtain a set of the sum rules for the observable spectral densities which correlate the resonance properties to a few vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements. As the last bid to specify the sum rules we estimate the matrix elements involved and elaborate several techniques for this purpose.

Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. Examples and comparisons with experimental data from LEP, HERA, and Tevatron are also covered.

Abstract:The analysis of the grey tracks produced in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) off nuclei provides important information on the space-time development of hadronization in nuclear medium. This method is complementary to the measurement of nuclear attenuation of leading inclusive hadrons. While the latter is focused on the hadronization dynamics for the quite rare process of leading hadrons production, the former covers the main bulk of inelastic events, and its Q^2 dependence is a very sensitive tool to discriminate between different models of hadronization. Employing the model of perturbative hadronization developed earlier, we calculate the Q^2 and x_{Bj} dependences of the number of collisions and relate it to the mean number of grey tracks, using an empirical relation obtained from the analysis of data from the Fermilab E665 experiment on DIS of muons off the Xe nucleus. We found the number of grey tracks to rise steeply with Q^2 in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:This review focuses on diffractive physics, which involves the long-range interactions of strong nuclear force at high energies described by SU(3) gauge symmetry. It is expected that diffractive processes account for nearly 40% of the total cross-section at LHC energies. These processes consist of soft-scale physics where perturbation theory cannot be applied. Although highly successful and often described as a perfect theory, quantum chromodynamics relies heavily on perturbation theory, a model best suited for hard-scale physics. The study of pomerons could help bridge the soft and hard processes and provide a complete description of the theory of the strong interaction across the full momentum spectrum. Here, we will discuss some of the features of diffractive physics, experimental results from SPS, HERA, and the LHC, and where the field could potentially lead. With the recent publication of the odderon discovery in 2021 by the D0 and TOTEM collaborations and the new horizon of physics that lies ahead with the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, interest is seemingly piquing in high energy diffractive physics.
