Abstract:In reference to the recently observed high Q^2, large x events in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA, various leptoquark and supersymmetric scenarios are discussed. We study the impact of virtual leptoquark or R-parity breaking squark exchange as well as generic contact interaction on the production of quark-antiquark pairs in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, in particular at LEP2.

Abstract:Attempts to understand the recent observation of an excess of events in the neutral and charged current channels at high$-Q^2$ at HERA has provided an excellent example of how experiments at both low and high energies can be used to simultaneously constrain scenarios which predict new physics beyond the Standard Model. Abstract:We examine the phenomenological implications of a 200 GeV leptoquark in light of the recent excess of events at HERA. Given the relative predictions of events rates in e^+p versus e^-p, we demonstrate that classes of leptoquarks may be excluded, including those contained in E_6 GUT models. It is shown that future studies with polarized beams at HERA could reveal the chirality of the leptoquark fermionic coupling and that given sufficient luminosity in each e^\pm_{L,R} channel the leptoquark quantum numbers could be determined. The implications of 200-220 GeV leptoquarks at the Tevatron are examined. While present Tevatron data most likely excludes vector leptoquarks and leptogluons in this mass region, it does allow for scalar leptoquarks. We find that while leptoquarks have little influence on Drell-Yan production, further studies at the Main Injector are possible in the single production channel. We investigate precision electroweak measurements as well as the process e^+e^-\to q\bar q at LEP II and find they provide no further restrictions on these leptoquark models. We then ascertain that cross section and polarization asymmetry measurements at the NLC provide the only direct mechanism to determine the leptoquark's electroweak quantum numbers. The single production of leptoquarks in \gamma e collisions by both the backscattered laser and Weisacker-Williams techniques at the NLC is also discussed. Finally, we demonstrate that we can obtain successful coupling constant unification in models with leptoquarks, both with or without supersymmetry. The supersymmetric case requires the GUT group to be larger than SU(5) such as flipped SU(5)\times U(1)_X.

Abstract:We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC.

Abstract:The coefficient functions for heavy-flavour production in deeply inelastic electron-hadron scattering have been calculated previously. Analytic expressions are impossible to publish due to their length. Therefore we have tabulated them as two-dimensional arrays as is often done for the scale-dependent parton densities. Using this computer program we present event rates for charm production at HERA in bins of $x$ and $Q^2$. These rates are insensitive to variations in the factorization and renormalization scale $\mu$.

Abstract:Although protons are baryons with an overall vanishing lepton number, they possess a non-trivial leptonic content arising from quantum fluctuations which can be described by lepton parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. These PDFs have been recently computed and can be used to define lepton-induced processes at high-energy colliders. In this article, we propose a novel way to test the computation of lepton PDFs of the proton by analyzing both non-resonant di-lepton and resonant Z gauge boson production processes induced by leptons within the proton at proton-electron colliders like HERA and EIC. Despite the fact that lepton PDFs of the proton are known to be small, this work demonstrates that both processes imply a measurable yield of events at HERA and EIC, which could be used to test these PDFs.

Abstract:Recent results on inclusive D^0 and D^{*+-} production in deeply inelastic ep scattering at sqrt(s)=301 GeV are summarized. The data have been collected by the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA. The total and the differential cross sections are discussed in the framework of LO and NLO QCD predictions. The data exhibit clear evidence for boson gluon fusion dominating open heavy flavor production in the kinematic range currently explored at HERA. The measurements of F_2^{cc}(x,Q^2) at small Bjorken x are presented. The prospects for future analyses of open charm and beauty production including detector upgrades and anticipated high luminosities are investigated.

Abstract:Complexity problems associated with finite rings and finite semigroups, particularly semigroups of matrices over a field and the Rees matrix semigroups, are examined. Let M_nF be the ring of n x n matrices over the finite field F and let T_nF be the multiplicative semigroup of n x n matrices over the finite field F. It is proved that for any finite field F and positive integer n >= 2, the polynomial equivalence problem for the T_n F is co-NPcomplete, thus POL-EQ_\Sigma(M_n F) (POL-EQ_\Sigma is a polynomial equivalence problem for which polynomials are presented as sums of monomials) is also co-NP-complete thereby resolving a problem of J. Lawrence and R. Willard and completing the description of POL-EQ_\Sigma for the finite simple rings. In connection with our results on rings, we exhibit a large class of combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups whose polynomial equivalence problem is co-NP-complete. On the other hand, if S is a combinatorial Rees matrix semigroup with a totally balanced structure matrix M, then we prove that the polynomial equivalence problem for S is in P. Fully determining the complexity of the polynomial equivalence problem for combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups may be a difficult problem. We describe a connection between the polynomial equivalence problem for combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups and the retraction problem RET for bipartite graphs, a problem which computer scientists suspect may not admit a dichotomy into P and NP-complete problems (assuming P is not equal to NP).

Abstract:In light of new data we present an updated phenomenological analysis of the simplified $U_1$-leptoquark model addressing charged-current $B$-meson anomalies. The analysis shows a good compatibility of low-energy data (dominated by the lepton flavor universality ratios $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$) with the high-energy constraints posed by $pp\to \tau\bar\tau$ Drell-Yan data. We also show that present data are well compatible with a framework where the leptoquark couples with similar strength to both left- and right-handed third-generation fermions, a scenario that is well-motivated from a model building perspective. We find that the high-energy implications of this setup will be probed at the 95% confidence level in the high-luminosity phase of the LHC.

Abstract:We review next-to-leading order calculations of one- and two-jet production in ep collisions at HERA for photon virtualities in the range 1<Q^2<100 GeV^2. Soft and collinear singularities are extracted using the phase space slicing method. Numerical results are presented for HERA conditions with the Snowmass jet definition. The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is studied. We discuss the comparison with recent H1 data of the dijet rate and differential dijet cross sections with special attention to the region, in which two jets have equal transverse momenta.

Abstract:Leptoquarks are theorized particles of either scalar or vector nature that couple simultaneously to quarks and leptons. Motivated by recent measurements of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, we consider the impact of scalar leptoquarks coupling to neutrinos on a few complementary processes, from low energy to colliders. In particular, we set competitive constraints on the typical mass and coupling of scalar leptoquarks by analyzing recent COHERENT data. We compare these constraints with bounds from atomic parity violation experiments, deep inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering and collider data. Our results highlight a strong complementarity between different facilities and demonstrate the power of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments to probe leptoquark masses in the sub-TeV range.
