Abstract:Electroweak processes with four fermions in the final state were measured extensively at LEP-2 in e+e- collisions with centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. By combining the results obtained by Aleph, Delphi, L3 and Opal, the predictions from the Standard Model were probed at the level of their present accuracy. An important outcome was the possibility to measure the predicted charged triple gauge boson self-couplings with a precision of a few percent. Moreover studies of four-fermion processes allowed new physics to be searched for by looking for anomalous gauge boson self-couplings. The measurements reported are also relevant to direct searches for new particles at LEP, as four-fermion processes contribute an important background in several cases. The latest results from the LEP experiments - some of which are now available in finalized form - and their combination are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract:Cross sections, angular distributions and forward-backward asymmetries are presented, of two-fermion events produced in e + e - collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 189 to 209 GeV at LEP, measured with the ALEPH detector. Results for e + e - , μ + μ - , τ + τ - , qq̄, bb̄ and cc̄ production are in agreement with the standard model predictions. Constraints are set on scenarios of new physics such as four-fermion contact interactions, leptoquarks, Z ′ bosons, TeV-scale quantum gravity and R-parity violating squarks and sneutrinos.

Abstract:The key results on lepton-pair production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions are shortly reviewed, starting at the roots of pp collisions in the seventies, and ending at the perspectives of the colliders RHIC and LHC. The presence is dominated by the recent precision results from NA60 at the CERN SPS, culminating in the first measurement of the in-medium rho spectral function and the transverse flow of the associated thermal radiation. The seeming cut-off of the flow above the rho may well be the first direct hint for thermal radiation of partonic origin in nuclear collisions. The major milestones in the theoretical developments are also covered.

Abstract:The excess of high-Q2 events recently observed in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA has refuelled speculations on physics beyond the standard model, in particular on low-mass leptoquark-type particles. We review the theoretical framework for leptoquark interactions, and their production and decay at HERA. Bounds on leptoquark masses and couplings, and implications on other experiments are also discussed.

Abstract:In reference to the recently observed high Q^2, large x events in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA, various leptoquark and supersymmetric scenarios are discussed. Abstract:We discuss 2f production at LC energies (f \neq t). This type of reaction has a big event number and may give interesting hints to the existence and perhaps to details of New Physics like susy, LQ, Z', etc. {For} any search the radiative corrections have to be controlled carefully. Abstract:We review one-particle inclusive production of heavy-flavoured hadrons in a framework which resums the large collinear logarithms through the evolution of the FFs and PDFs and retains the full dependence on the heavy-quark mass without additional theoretical assumptions. We focus on presenting results for the inclusive cross section for the production of charmed mesons in p anti-p collisions and the comparison with CDF data from the Tevatron as well as on inclusive B-meson production and comparison with recent CDF data. The third topic is the production of D^* mesons in photoproduction and comparison with recent H1 data from HERA.

Abstract:The working group on two photon physics concentrated on three main subtopics: modelling the hadronic final state of deep inelastic scattering on a photon; unfolding the deep inelastic scattering data to obtain the photon structure function; and resonant production of exclusive final states, particularly of glueball candidates. Abstract:We discuss the production, at high--energy e$^+$e$^-$ linear colliders, of new heavy fermions predicted by extensions of the Standard Model. We analyze in great details the various signals and the corresponding backgrounds for both pair production and single production in association with ordinary fermions. Concentrating on new leptons, we use a model detector for e$^+$e$^-$ collisions at a center of mass energy of 500 GeV, to illustrate the discovery potential of the Next Linear Colliders.

Abstract:We review the current status of analyses of multijet final states in e+e- annihilation. Results for jet observables from LEP 1, LEP 2 and from the reanalysis of the PETRA experiment JADE will be presented. A determination of the b-quark mass using jet observables will be discussed and tests of power correction models will be shown. Finally determinations of the QCD colour factors from an analysis of event shape distributions at several energy points using power corrections will be discussed.

Abstract:The confinement transition from the quark and gluon degrees of freedom appropriate in perturbation theory to the hadrons observed by real world experiments is poorly understood. In this strongly interacting transition regime we presently rely on models, which to varying degrees reflect possible scenarios for the QCD dynamics. Because of the absence of beam and target remnants, and the clean experimental conditions and high event rates, e+e- annihilation to hadrons at the Z0 provides a unique laboratory, both experimentally and theoretically, for the study of parton hadronization. This review discusses current theoretical understanding of the hadronization of partons, with particular emphasis on models of the non-perturbative phase, as implemented in Monte Carlo simulation programs. Experimental results at LEP and SLC are summarised and considered in the light of the models. Suggestions are given for further measurements which could help to produce more progress in understanding hadronization.

Abstract:A search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a fermion pair, and decaying to WW, is performed with the data collected by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 191 to 209 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 453.2 pb-1. Thirteen exclusive selections are developed according to the different final state topologies. No statistically significant evidence for a Higgs boson decaying into a WW pair has been found. An upper limit is derived, as a function of the Higgs boson mass, on the product of the e+e-→Hff̄ cross section and the H→WW branching ratio. The data on the search for H→WW are combined with previously published ALEPH results on the search for H→γγ, to significantly extend the limits on the mass of a fermiophobic Higgs boson.

Abstract:We study the structures in cross sections and R ratios concerning electron-positron annihilation reactions, for open-strangeness, open-charm and open-beauty hadron-pair production, from the perspective of a recently developed production formalism. Special attention is paid to non-resonant contributions. Known, tentative, and yet unknown resonances are spotted, with estimates for their masses and widths.

Abstract:W+jets, Z+jets and QCD multijet production processes at hadron colliders are backgrounds to many searches for physics beyond the Standard Model which involve leptons and missing energy in the final state. We review the current theoretical and experimental status of these processes at the LHC. Furthermore, we discuss several methods that allow for reliable predictions for these processes in the context of new-physics searches.

Abstract:The past ten years of physics with e+e- colliding experiments at LEP and SLAC have shown the success of these experiments on not only impressively proving the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model (SM), but also to help provide stringent bounds on physics beyond the SM. With this experience in mind, there appear two equally fascinating opportunities for studying fermion-pair production processes at a future Linear Collider (LC). On the one hand, performing high precision measurements to the SM, for example, when running with high luminosity at the Z boson resonance, could be a quick and feasible enterprise in order to pin down the symmetry breaking mechanism of the electroweak sector through indirectly determining the masses of a light SM or MSSM Higgs boson or supersymmetric particles via virtual corrections. On the other hand, looking for such particles in direct production or other `New Physics' effects at energies between, for example, roughly 500 and 800 GeV will naturally be the main motivation to pursue the challenging endeavor of building and utilizing such a unique facility. These two scenarios for the LC shall be sketched here, with particular emphasis on the semi-analytical program ZFITTER for fermion-pair production in comparison with numerical programs like TOPAZ0, KK2f, and others.
Perturbative rates and colour rearrangement effects in four-jet events at LEP2

Abstract:An important issue in the direct reconstruction method of determining the $W$ mass from $q\bar q Q\bar Q$ events at LEP2 concerns the impact of the relatively unknown QCD interconnection effects. It has been suggested that a study of `short string' states, in which colour singlet states are formed from $q \bar Q $ and $Q\bar q$ pairs with small phase--space separation, could shed important light on this issue. We show that such configurations can also be generated by conventional background $e^+e^-\ar 4$~parton processes, in particular QCD $q \bar q g g$ and $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ and non--resonant electroweak $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ production. We study the colour and kinematic structure of these background contributions, and estimate the event rate to be expected at LEP2. We find that the QCD processes are heavily suppressed, but that non--resonant $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ production may be comparable in rate to the expected `short string' signal from $W^+W^-$ production.
