Abstract:John Wheeler’s description of the progression from graduate student to professor as being the passage from knowing everything about nothing to knowing nothing about everything carries over with obvious (and inessential) modifications to the progression from talks at parallel sessions to the conference summary. I feel especially daunted here, after listening to a series of beautiful plenary talks that have already summarized their subject areas, so that I’m reduced to providing a summary of the second order. In order to supply at least a small amount of value added, I’ll try to frame the new developments actually reported at the Conference within the broader context of contemporary physics, and also to indicate a few directions that I feel are important and promising, but which did not get emphasized during the Conference. 1. Abstract:A systematic method to account for electron correlation in periodic systems which can predict quantitatively correct band structures of non-conducting solids from first principles is presented. Using localized Hartree-Fock orbitals (both occupied and virtual ones), an effective Hamiltonian is built up whose matrix elements can easily be transferred from finite to infinite systems. To describe the correlation effects wave-function-based multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations with singly and doubly excited configurations are performed. This way it is possible to generate, both, valence and conduction bands with all correlation effects taken into account. Trans-polyacetylene is chosen as a test system.

Abstract:In the first part of the talk the interesting new results of MINOS, OPERA and CMS collaborations (connected with the observational evidence of the rise in the muon charge ratio at muon energies around 1 TeV) are briefly discussed from theoretical point of view. A short review of charge asymmetric effects in muon energy losses is given. In the second part of the talk, the modern theoretical approaches to the problem of heavy quark production in high energy nucleon-nucleus interactions are briefly considered (color dipole formalism, saturation models). The recent new theoretical developments in the ancient problem of intrinsic charm are also discussed.

Abstract:The organizers of this meeting have asked me to present perspectives of nuclear physics. This means to identify the areas where nuclear physics will be expanding in the next future. In six chapters a short overview of these areas will be given, where I expect that nuclear physics willdevelop quite fast: A. Quantum Chromodynamics and effective field theories in the confinement region; B. Nuclear structure at the limits; C. High energy heavy ion collisions; D. Nuclear astrophysics; E. Neutrino physics; F. Test of physics beyond the standard model by rare processes. After a survey over these six points I will pick out a few topics where I will go more in details. There is no time to give for all six points detailed examples. I shall discuss the following examples of the six topics mentionned above: 1. The perturbative chiral quark model and the nucleon $\Sigma$-term, 2. VAMPIR (Variation After Mean field Projection In Realistic model spaces and with realistic forces) as an example of the nuclear structure renaissance, 3. Measurement of important astrophysical nuclear reactions in the Gamow peak, 4. The solar neutrino problem. As examples for testing new physics beyond the standard model by rare processes I had prepared to speak about the measurement of the electric neutron dipole moment and of the neutrinoless double beta decay. But the time is limited and so I have to skip these points, although they are extremely interesting.

Abstract:Biological systems are typically very complex and need to be reduced before they are amenable to a thorough analysis. Also, they often possess functionally important dynamic features like bistability. In model reduction, it is sometimes more desirable to preserve the dynamic features only than to recover a good quantitative approximation. We present an approach to reduce the order of a bistable dynamical system significantly while preserving bistability and the switching threshold. These properties are important for the operation of the system in the context of a larger network. As an application example, a bistable model for caspase activation in apoptosis is considered.

Abstract:We describe a modification of the inverted perturbation approach method allowing to construct physically sensible potential energy curves for electronic states of diatomic molecules even when some parts of the potential are not adequately characterized by the experimental data. The method is based on a simple regularization procedure, imposing an additional constraint on the constructed potential curve. In the present work it is applied to the double minimum 4$^1\Sigma^{+}_{\mathrm u}$ state of Na$_2$, observed experimentally by polarization labeling spectroscopy technique.
