Abstract:A summary of recent researches on nuclear dynamics with realistic microscopic quantum approaches is presented. The Balian-Vénéroni variational principle is used to derive the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) equation describing the dynamics at the mean-field level, as well as an extension including small-amplitude quantum fluctuations which is equivalent to the time-dependent random-phase approximation (TDRPA). Such formalisms as well as their practical implementation in the nuclear physics framework with modern three-dimensional codes are discussed. Recent applications to nuclear dynamics, from collective vibrations to heavy-ion collisions are presented. A particular attention is devoted to the interplay between collective motions and internal degrees of freedom. For instance, the harmonic nature of collective vibrations is questioned. Nuclei are also known to exhibit superfluidity due to pairing residual interaction. Extensions of the theoretical approach to study such pairing vibrations are now available. Large amplitude collective motions are investigated in the framework of heavy-ion collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of a compound system. How fusion is affected by the internal structure of the collision partners, such as their deformation, is discussed. Other mechanisms in competition with fusion, and responsible for the formation of fragments which differ from the entrance channel (transfer reactions, deep-inelastic collisions, and quasi-fission) are investigated. Finally, studies of actinide collisions forming, during very short times of few zeptoseconds, the heaviest nuclear systems available on Earth, are presented.

Abstract:This invited summary gives some concluding remarks regarding theoretical aspects of the research presented at Charm2010. I will specialize to the role of theory and the relative reach of theory and experiment in three of the major areas of charm physics address at this conference, specifically 1) charm production, 2) charm weak decays, and 3) charm hadron spectroscopy. After a discussion of the status of progress on representative topics in each of these areas I will conclude with a previously unrelated Feynman story from a conference in the early days of charm.

Abstract:We provide a snapshot of Dyson-Schwinger equation applications to the theory and phenomenology of hadrons. Exact results for pseudoscalar mesons are highlighted, with details relating to the U_A(1) problem. Calculated masses of the lightest J=0,1 states are discussed. We recapitulate upon studies of nucleon properties and give a perspective on the contribution of quark orbital angular momentum to the spin of a nucleon at rest.

Abstract:Strongly intensive quantities sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] have become one of the important tools in study of phase transitions and critical points in high energy heavy-ion collisions. In this paper the properties of sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] are discussed within different colliding nuclei systems generated by the AMPT model. The combined event method are proposed to simulate the model of independent sources in which sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] are independent of the number of original events. The effects of transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and parton cascade are also discussed.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:Many features of multiparticle production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions reflect the collision geometry and other collision characteristics determining the initial conditions. As the initial conditions affect all the particles to a different degree, it leads to truly multiparticle effects often referred to as anisotropic collective flow. Studying anisotropic flow in nuclear collisions provides unique and invaluable information about the system evolution and the physics of multiparticle production in general. Being not able to cover all aspects of anisotropic flow in one lecture, I decided in the first part of the lecture to discuss briefly a few important and established results, and in the second part, to focus, in a little more detail, on one recent development — a recent progress in our understanding of the role of fluctuations in the initial conditions. I also discuss some future measurements that might reveal further details of the multiparticle production processes.

Effective quantum kinetic theory for spin transport of fermions with collsional effects

Abstract:We systematically derive the collision term for the axial kinetic theory, a quantum kinetic theory delineating the coupled dynamics of the vector/axial charges and spin transport carried by the massive spin-1/2 fermions traversing a medium. We employ the Wigner-function approach and propose a consistent power-counting scheme where the axial-charge distribution function, a non-conserved quantity for massive particles, is accounted as the first-order quantity in the ħ expansion, while the vector-charge distribution function the zeroth-order quantity. This specific power-counting scheme allows us to organize a reduced ħ expansion for the collision term and to formally identity the spin- diffusion effect and the spin-polarization effect at the same order. We confirm that the obtained collisional axial kinetic theory smoothly reduces to the chiral kinetic theory in the massless limit, serving as a consistency check. In the absence of electromagnetic fields, we further present the simplified axial kinetic equations suitable for tracking dynamical spin polarization of heavy and light fermions, respectively. As an application to the weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma at high temperature, we compute the spin-diffusion term for massive quarks within the leading-log approximation. The formal expression for the first- order terms provides a path toward evaluation of the spin polarization effect in quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract:We develop the quantum field theory of electron-point magnetic monopole interactions and more generally, dyon-dyon interactions, based on the original string-dependent ``nonlocal'' action of Dirac and Schwinger. We demonstrate that a viable nonperturbative quantum field theoretic formulation can be constructed that results in a string {\em independent} cross section for monopole-electron and dyon-dyon scattering. Such calculations can be done only by using nonperturbative approximations such as the eikonal and not by some mutilation of lowest-order perturbation theory.

Unveiling Novel Insights in Quantum Dynamics through Extended Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Abstract:Inspired by recent developments in the study of the model of double scaled SYK (DSSYK), as elucidated in a recent paper, we embark on a re-evaluation of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Our motivation stems from the insights gained from the DSSYK model, particularly its ability to capture essential features of quantum dynamics and gravitational effects. In this work, we delve into the SYK model, uncovering precise solutions for the two-point function and self-energy that have not been previously reported. Building upon the advancements made in particle physics phenomenology, we extend the SYK model to encompass tensor field theory. Through the incorporation of a cutoff term to ensure convergence, we substantially advance our understanding of quantum many-body physics. Our investigation extends to experimental parameter estimation and the exploration of cutoff dependency in random couplings, providing invaluable insights into system dynamics. The introduction of a novel tensor field theory replaces conventional fermionic degrees of freedom with tensorial counterparts, leading to the discovery of intriguing phase transition phenomena characterized by a first-order transition. Furthermore, we elucidate a direct linear relationship between the coupling parameter and the cutoff scale. These findings not only shed light on emergent behavior across both high-energy physics and condensed matter systems but also pave the way for further theoretical and experimental exploration, inspired by the recent advancements in the SYK model.

Three Dimensional Numerical General Relativistic Hydrodynamics I: Formulations, Methods, and Code Tests

Abstract:This is the first in a series of papers on the construction and validation of a three-dimensional code for general relativistic hydrodynamics, and its application to general relativistic astrophysics. This paper studies the consistency and convergence of our general relativistic hydrodynamic treatment and its coupling to the spacetime evolutions described by the full set of Einstein equations with a perfect fluid source. The numerical treatment of the general relativistic hydrodynamic equations is based on high resolution shock capturing schemes. These schemes rely on the characteristic information of the system. A spectral decomposition for general relativistic hydrodynamics suitable for a general spacetime metric is presented. Evolutions based on three different approximate Riemann solvers coupled to four different discretizations of the Einstein equations are studied and compared. The coupling between the hydrodynamics and the spacetime (the right and left hand side of the Einstein equations) is carried out in a treatment which is second order accurate in {\it both} space and time. Convergence tests for all twelve combinations with a variety of test beds are studied, showing consistency with the differential equations and correct convergence properties. The test-beds examined include shocktubes, Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology tests, evolutions of self-gravitating compact (TOV) stars, and evolutions of relativistically boosted TOV stars. Special attention is paid to the numerical evolution of strongly gravitating objects, e.g., neutron stars, in the full theory of general relativity, including a simple, yet effective treatment for the surface region of the star (where the rest mass density is abruptly dropping to zero).
