Abstract:Multi-parton interactions are a fascinating phenomenon that occur in almost every high-energy hadron--hadron collision, yet are remarkably difficult to study quantitatively. In this letter we present a strategy to optimally disentangle multi-parton interactions from the primary scattering in a collision. That strategy enables probes of multi-parton interactions that are significantly beyond the state of the art, including their characteristic momentum scale, the interconnection between primary and secondary scatters, and the pattern of three and potentially even more simultaneous hard scatterings. This opens a path to powerful new constraints on multi-parton interactions for LHC phenomenology and to the investigation of their rich field-theoretical structure.

Abstract:Parton recombination is reconsidered in perturbation theory without using the AGK cutting rules in the leading order of the recombination. We use time-ordered perturbation theory to sum the cut diagrams, which are neglected in the GLR evolution equation. We present a set of new evolution equations including parton recombination.

Effects of Multi-Parton Interactions in Jet Quenching in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:We perform the first systematic study of the effects of multi-parton interactions (MPI's) in the context of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions with the jet quenching model JEWEL. We use the simple MPI model of PYTHIA 6, on which JEWEL is based. We find negligible effects on all observables except jet-hadron and Z-hadron correlations, which show a moderate enhancement at large distances. More detailed analysis at parton level reveals that, in heavy-ion collisions, the MPI contribution to jets is suppressed by quenching effects.

Abstract:Within the framework of a generalized collinear factorization for multiple parton scattering in nuclear medium, twist-4 contributions to DIS off a large nucleus can be factorized as a convolution of hard parts and two-parton correlation functions. The hard parts for the quark scattering in the light-cone gauge correspond to interaction with a transverse (physical) gluon in the target, while they are given by the second derivative of the cross section with a longitudinal gluon in the covariant gauge. We provide a general proof of the equivalence of the hard parts in the light-cone and covariant gauge. We further demonstrate the equivalence in calculations of twist-4 contributions to semi-inclusive cross section of DIS in both lowest order and next leading order. Calculations of the nuclear transverse momentum broadening of the struck quark in the light-cone and covariant gauge are also discussed.

Abstract:The singularities associated with QCD factorization in the collinear limit are key ingredients for high-precision theoretical predictions in particle physics. They govern the collinear behaviour of scattering amplitudes, as well as the perturbative energy evolution of parton densities (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs). In this talk, we present the computation of multiple collinear and higher-order QCD splittings with massive partons. Our results are highly-relevant for the consistent introduction of mass effects in the subtraction formalism and PDF/FF evolution.

Abstract:Multi parton scattering (MPI) research has great importance in the field of high energy physics. Two recent outcomes of MPI studies conducted by the CMS collaboration at the LHC are presents. The first observation of double J/ψ production in proton-lead (pPb) collisions is reported, as well as the first observation of the concurrent production of triple J/ψ in proton-proton (pp) collisions. Both studies provide calculations of the effective cross section.

Abstract:Strongly intensive quantities sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] have become one of the important tools in study of phase transitions and critical points in high energy heavy-ion collisions. In this paper the properties of sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] are discussed within different colliding nuclei systems generated by the AMPT model. The combined event method are proposed to simulate the model of independent sources in which sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] are independent of the number of original events. The effects of transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and parton cascade are also discussed.

Abstract:We study production of two pairs of jets in %hard hadron--hadron collisions in view of extracting contribution of {\em double hard interactions} of three and four partons ($3\to4$, $4\to4$). Such interactions, in spite of being power suppressed at the level of the total cross section, become comparable with the standard hard collisions of two partons, $2\to4$, in the {\em back-to-back kinematics} when the transverse momentum imbalances of two pairing jets are relatively small. We express differential and total cross sections for two-dijet production in double parton collisions through the generalized two-parton distributions, $_2$GPDs \cite{BDFS1}, that contain large-distance two-parton correlations of non-perturbative origin as well as small-distance correlations due to parton evolution. We find that these large- and small-distance correlations participate in different manner in 4-jet production, and treat them in the leading logarithmic approximation of pQCD that resums collinear logarithms in all orders. A special emphasis is given to $3\to4$ double hard interaction processes that occur as an interplay between large- and short-distance parton correlations and were not taken into consideration by approaches inspired by the parton model picture. We demonstrate that the $3\to4$ mechanism, being of the same order in $\as$ as the $4\to4$ process, turns out to be {\em geometrically enhanced} compared to the latter and should contribute significantly to 4-jet production. The framework developed here takes into systematic consideration perturbative $Q^2$ evolution of $_2$GPDs. It can be used as a basis for future analysis of NLO corrections to multi-parton interactions (MPI) at LHC and Tevatron colliders, in particular for improving evaluation of QCD backgrounds to new physics searches.

Abstract:Multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss are studied in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei. The effect of multiple scattering of a highly off-shell quark and the induced parton energy loss is expressed in terms of the modification to the quark fragmentation functions. We derive such modified quark fragmentation functions and their QCD evolution equations in DIS using the generalized factorization of higher twist parton distributions. We consider double-hard and hard-soft parton scattering as well as their interferences in the same framework. The final result, which depends on both the diagonal and off-diagonal twist-four parton distributions in nuclei, demonstrates clearly the Landau–Pomeranchuk–Migdal interference features and predicts a unique nuclear modification of the quark fragmentation functions.

Abstract:Multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off heavy nuclei is studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD with a complete calculation beyond the helicity amplitude (or soft bremsstrahlung) approximation. Such a calculation gives rise to new corrections to the modified quark fragmentation functions. The effective parton energy loss is found to be reduced by a factor of 5/6 from the result of helicity amplitude approximation.

Abstract:In high energy collisions saturation and multiple collisions are most easily accounted for in transverse coordinate space, while analyses in momentum space have been more suitable for calculating properties of exclusive final states. In this talk I describe an extension of Mueller's dipole cascade model, which attempts to combine the good features of both these descriptions. Besides saturation it also includes effects of correlations and fluctuations, which have been difficult to account for in previous approaches. The model reproduces successfully total, elastic, and diffractive cross sections in pp collisions and DIS, and a description of final states will be ready soon.

Abstract:We discuss recent applications of the partonic perturbative QCD based cascade model BAMPS with focus on heavy-ion phenomeneology in hard and soft momentum range. First, the elliptic flow and suppression of charm and bottom quarks are studied at LHC energies. Thereafter, we compare in a detailed study the standard Gunion-Bertsch approximation of the matrix elements for inelastic processes to the exact results at leading order perturbative QCD. Since a disagreement is found, we propose an improved Gunion-Bertsch matrix element, which agrees with the exact result in all phase space regions. In addition to recent jet-quenching investigations we present results on the application of jet reconstruction algorithms in BAMPS. Finally, jet phenomena inducing collective effects such as Mach cones, are demonstrated in an expanding medium at relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We address the question, whether the signal of a Mach cones is the origin for a double peak structure in extracted two-particle correlations.
Multi-parton interactions and rapidity gap survival probability in jet-gap-jet processes

Abstract:We discuss an application of dynamical multi-parton interaction model, tuned to measurements of underlying event topology, for a description of destroying rapidity gaps in the jet-gap-jet processes at the LHC. We concentrate on the dynamical origin of the mechanism of destroying the rapidity gap. The cross section for jet-gap-jet is calculated within LL BFKL approximation. We discuss the topology of final states without and with the MPI effects. We discuss some examples of selected kinematical situations (fixed jet rapidities and transverse momenta) as distributions averaged over the dynamics of the jet-gap-jet scattering. The color-singlet ladder exchange amplitude for the partonic subprocess is implemented into the \textsc{Pythia 8} generator, which is then used for hadronisation and for the simulation of the MPI effects. Several differential distributions are shown and discussed. We present the ratio of cross section calculated with and without MPI effects as a function of rapidity gap in between the jets.

Abstract:Multiple scattering, induced radiative energy loss and modified fragmentation functions of a heavy quark in nuclear matter are studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD. Modified heavy quark fragmentation functions and energy loss are derived in detail with illustration of the mass dependencies of the Landau–Pomeranchuk–Migdal interference effects and heavy quark energy loss. Due to the quark mass dependence of the gluon formation time, the nuclear size dependencies of nuclear modification of the heavy quark fragmentation function and heavy quark energy loss are found to change from a linear to a quadratic form when the initial energy and momentum scale are increased relative to the quark mass. The radiative energy loss of the heavy quark is also significantly suppressed due to limited cone of gluon radiation imposed by the mass. Medium modification of the heavy quark fragmentation functions is found to be limited to the large z region due to the form of heavy quark fragmentation functions in vacuum.

Abstract:Double parton distributions can be computed from the perturbative splitting of one parton into two if the distance between the two observed partons is small. We develop schemes to take into account quark mass effects in this computation, and we study these schemes numerically at leading order in the strong coupling. Furthermore, we investigate in detail the structure of the next-to-leading order corrections to the splitting kernels that include quark mass effects.

Abstract:We present a new, comprehensive global analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions at next-to-leading-order accuracy in QCD. The obtained results are based on the latest experimental information on single-inclusive pion production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An excellent description of all data sets is achieved, and the remaining uncertainties in parton-to-pion fragmentation functions are estimated based on the Hessian method. Extensive comparisons to the results from our previous global analysis are performed.

Abstract:Modifications to quark and antiquark fragmentation functions due to quark–quark (antiquark) double scattering in nuclear medium are studied systematically up to order O(αs2) in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclear targets. At the order O(αs2), twist-four contributions from quark–quark (antiquark) rescattering also exhibit the Landau–Pomeranchuk–Migdal (LPM) interference feature similar to gluon bremsstrahlung induced by multiple parton scattering. Compared to quark–gluon scattering, the modification, which is dominated by t-channel quark–quark (antiquark) scattering, is only smaller by a factor of CF/CA=4/9 times the ratio of quark and gluon distributions in the medium. Such a modification is not negligible for realistic kinematics and finite medium size. The modifications to quark (antiquark) fragmentation functions from quark–antiquark annihilation processes are shown to be determined by the antiquark (quark) distribution density in the medium. The asymmetry in quark and antiquark distributions in nuclei will lead to different modifications of quark and antiquark fragmentation functions inside a nucleus, which qualitatively explains the experimentally observed flavor dependence of the leading hadron suppression in semi-inclusive DIS off nuclear targets. The quark–antiquark annihilation processes also mix quark and gluon fragmentation functions in the large fractional momentum region, leading to a flavor dependence of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:A pQCD-based model for parton production and equilibration in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. The model combines pQCD processes including initial and final state radiations together with string phenomenology for nonperturbative soft processes. Nuclear effects on the initial parton production, such as multiple parton scattering and nuclear shadowing of parton distribution functions are considered. Comparisons with existing data are made and further tests of the model to constrain model parameters are proposed. With the obtained space-time history of the parton production, evolution of the minijet gas toward a fully equilibrated parton plasma is studied. Direct probes of the early parton dynamics, such as pre-equilibrium photon and dilepton production, open charm production, Jψ suppression and jet quenching are also reviewed.
