After a brief summary of some of the highlights at the conference, comments are offered on three special topics: theories with large additional spatial dimensions, the cosmological constant problems, and the analysis of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background.

Abstract:In this conference summary I first provide some historical notes on my own collaboration with You-Hua Chu and on the discovery of X-rays from superbubbles by Margarita Rosado S. I then consider the central subject of the conference, stellar feedback, and how interactions between stellar winds and the interstellar medium can limit or enhance the effects of feedback compared to models including only supernova explosions. Finally, I review results in other areas covered by the conference, including planet and star formation, nova and supernova remnants, different topics in stellar evolution and interaction with the interstellar medium, star clusters, observational surveys, and observational and numerical techniques.

Abstract:More than 40 participants from the solar/astrophysical community attended the First Asia-Pacific Conference on Plasma Physics. Among them, four colleagues presented invited talks in the plenary session. In the Solar/Astron session, there were 23 invited talks and 14 contributed talks, with another two posters. These talks cover recent progress obtained in a wide spectrum of topics, including solar and galactic dynamo, solar and stellar flares, solar and galactic filaments, solar and astrophysical jets, solar and accretion disk winds, plasma waves and coronal heating, solar coronal mass ejections, magnetic reconnection in non-relativistic and relativistic regimes, star and planetary formation, shock–medium interactions, and even gravitational waves. Laboratory laser experiments and some new rocket and space missions were also introduced.

Abstract:This is a summary of the `Astronomy Perspective' of the 4th meeting on 'Statistical Challenges in Modern Astronomy' held at Penn State University in June 2006. We comment on trends in the Astronomy community towards Bayesian methods and model selection criteria. We describe two examples where Bayesian methods have improved our inference: (i) photometric redshift estimation (ii) orbital parameters of extra-solar planets. We also comment on the pros and cons of Globalization of scientific research. Communities like Astronomy, High Energy Physics and Statistics develop ideas separately, but also have frequent interaction. This illustrates the benefits of 'comparing notes'.

Abstract:The "1st Workshop of Astronomy and Astrophysics for Students" was organized with the purpose of bringing togheter scientific Institutions involved in Astrophysical researches, of the Campania region and beyond. In this context the expression "Astronomy and Astrophysics" was used in its broadest meaning, i.e. including all topics related to the study of the Universe: the Sun and the Solar system, Stars, Galaxies, Cosmology, Astroparticles and Astronomical Technologies, with the belief that all scientific areas would benefit from interaction with related, if not strictly connected, research environments. The goal of the Workshop was to offer Students (undergraduate, graduate, PhD and Post-Docs) the opportunity to share their expertise with colleagues studying and working in other Universities and/or Research Institutes involved in research programs of astrophysical interests. At the same time the Workshop was intended to be a place were the partecipants could, possibly for the first time, promote the work done at any level of their educational and/or professional growth. Abstract:``Galaxies: the Third Dimension'' continues a tradition which started in Marseilles 1994 with the ``Tridimensional Optical Spectroscopic Methods in Astrophysics'' meeting, followed by ``Imaging the Universe in Three Dimensions'' at Walnut Creek in 1999. Since then, there have been developments both in instrumentation and in the way astronomy is conducted, and these need to be seen against a broad canvas. As we emphasize below, one of the main reasons for satisfaction is the trend towards talks focused on scientific results rather than on `yet another 3D spectroscopic technology.'

Abstract:John Wheeler’s description of the progression from graduate student to professor as being the passage from knowing everything about nothing to knowing nothing about everything carries over with obvious (and inessential) modifications to the progression from talks at parallel sessions to the conference summary. I feel especially daunted here, after listening to a series of beautiful plenary talks that have already summarized their subject areas, so that I’m reduced to providing a summary of the second order. In order to supply at least a small amount of value added, I’ll try to frame the new developments actually reported at the Conference within the broader context of contemporary physics, and also to indicate a few directions that I feel are important and promising, but which did not get emphasized during the Conference. 1. Abstract:This paper summarizes the three-day international workshop "Radio Stars and Their Lives in the Galaxy", held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Haystack Observatory on 2012 October 3-5. The workshop was organized to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of advances in stellar and solar astrophysics recently (or soon to be) enabled by the latest generation of state-of-the-art observational facilities operating from meter to submillimeter wavelengths. The meeting brought together both observers and theorists to discuss how radio wavelength observations are providing new and unique insights into the workings of stars and their role in the Galactic ecosystem. Topics covered included radio emission from hot and cool stars (from the pre- to post-main-sequence), the Sun as a radio star, circumstellar chemistry, planetary nebulae, white dwarf binaries and novae, supernova progenitors, and radio stars as probes of the Galaxy.
