Abstract:Barcelona was the location of the NANOP 2023 conference on Functional Nanophotonics and Micro/Nano Optics, where more than 200 experts gathered to discuss the latest advances in this broad and rapidly growing research area. The meeting featured twelve plenary talks: Sir Michael Berry offered a memorable lecture on the role of the geometric phase in electromagnetic fields [1], [2]; Sir John Pendry explored compelling exotic phenomena enabled by time-varying media [3], [4]; Laura Na Liu demonstrated an ultimate degree of control over the photonic properties of complex organic materials by electrochemical doping [5]; Hatice Altug portrayed impressive advances in infrared optical sensing with promising prospects for medical diagnosis [6]; Nikolay Zheludev challenged our imagination with ingenious experiments revealing picometer insights through optical interrogation in the nascent field of picophotonics [7]; Marin Soljačić presented breakthroughs on enhanced electroluminescence assisted by flat photonic bands [8]; Luis Liz-Marzán draw the frontiers of chirality in nanoparticle-based plasmonics and its applications in bio sensing [9]; Mark Brongersma excelled in the use and control of 2D materials for nanophotonic devices [10]; Romain Quidant explored the limits of in vacuo optical trapping of nanoparticles defining the emerging field of levitodynamics [11]; Asger Mortensen opened our minds to quantum and confinement effects in the optical response of nanostructures [12]; Javier Aizpurua dissected challenging quantum effects in subnanometer optical cavities [13]; and Ido Kaminer achieved an astonishing degree of control over individual free electrons and their ability to generate quantum states of light [14]. Many other attendants presented outstanding results on these and related research areas, which were intensively and actively discussed during the meeting, evidencing that there are many links that bring us together in the exploration of these seemingly diverse phenomena. The meeting emphasized the remarkable role of nanophotonics as the place where different disciplines intersect and researchers not only discover new physical effects but also devise unexplored scenarios beyond those occurring in Nature. At the core of nanophotonic research, Maxwell's equations still hold surprises in the form of topological properties and exotic solutions. This is combined with the explosive discovery (in number and properties) of novel material systems (2D, quantum, soft, maximal entropy, cold and Rydberg atoms, etc.) that are becoming available for the design of nanophotonics devices and the exploration of new phenomena. In addition, our field occupies a paramount position in the exploration of quantum and ultrafast physics with promising applications in imaging, sensing, and metrology, which are rapidly extending their operation limits. The selection portrayed in this special issue offers a panorama of this vibrant field, covering a wide spectrum of research, encompassing a broad range of time and energy scales, and manifesting in the discovery of diverse phenomena that are interconnected through the common subject of light manipulation at the nanoscale. Specifically, the issue presents results at the junction of nonlinear optics and hyperbolic materials illustrated by a customization of the nonlinear Kerr effect [15]; fundamentals of quantum emitters, including simple models to simulate their coherent behavior [16] as well as their ability to undergo strong coupling with confined optical modes [17]; optical energy transfer with different facets that range from long-distance coupling between molecular materials mediated by topological edge states [18] to the conversion of heat into mechanical motion as a result of recoil produced by anisotropic thermal emission from an engineered hot body [19]. Optical sensing remains a major focus of attraction, as illustrated by recent advances in the application of SERS to the detection of nuclei acids [20], the benchmarking of molecular surface coverages using X-ray scattering [21], and the optimized optical detection of molecules through engineered nanowires [22], which can be found in this issue. Like in many other areas of science, deep learning is making its way into optical sensing with advances such as the improvement in the information gathered from fluorescence-based analysis of gene expression [23]. Quantum dots play an important role in nanophotonics as nanoscale light sources, which are continuously being improved as demonstrated by the controlled doping of quantum dots for optimum quantum efficiency [24]. At the core of nanophotonics, the ability to concentrate light down to deep-subwavelength regions remains a major pole of attraction, benefiting from the design of ingenious structures that act as photonic funnels [25], while also enabling a controlled photoelectron emission from nanoscale optical cavities driven -Abstract Truncated-
