Abstract:Improvements in the understanding of catalysts and catalytic reactions strongly correlate with new developments in characterization techniques.Especially, the advancement in high-gas-pressure-and high-temperature-in situ probes to obtain structural and chemical information down to the atomic scale has contributed to new insights in the dynamic nanostructure of heterogeneous catalysts under operating conditions [1].Here, the application of two recent advances in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for heterogeneous catalysis will be discussed.The first advancement is concerned with high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) imaging of the shape and crystal structure of industrial-style prepared graphite-supported MoS 2 nanocatalysts for hydrotreating reactions [2].Previously, it was difficult to obtain atomic-resolved TEM images of the MoS 2 nanocatalysts due to insufficient image contrast or resolution.However, the introduction of aberration-corrected HRTEM has now made it possible to obtain atomically resolved images with a sensitivity at the single-atom level (see figure ).The second advancement is the introduction of MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) nanoreactors for in situ HRTEM of nanostructured materials during exposure to reactive gases at ambient pressure and high temperature.The pressure exceeds that of existing HRTEM systems by a factor of hundred and is at a level of relevance for catalyst testing.The reactor integrates a micro-meter sized gasflow channel with a microheater and with an array of electrontransparent windows of silicon nitride.The nanoreactor performance is demonstrated on a methanol-synthesis catalyst by the observation of the formation of Cu particles on ZnO support with atomic-scale resolution [3,4].Figure: Atomic arrangement of industrial-style MoS 2 catalysts observed by single-atom-sensitive TEM.

In addition to contributing to science, Prof. Lu left his mark as an educator by training the next generations of chemists and passing his work ethic on to his collaborators.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Nature is an inspiring resource for chemists to exploit uncharted chemical spaces. Enzymes in nature are characteristic of high efficiency and exquisite stereocontrol under rather mild conditions. Not surprisingly, chemists have a long history in developing new catalysts by learning from and imitating the natural enzymes. This review summarizes our long-standing efforts in developing bio-inspired small molecular catalysis. These were categorized according to the employed strategies: 1) bi-/multi-functional strategy for the bio-inspired chiral primary amine catalyst; 2) cofactor strategy for bio-inspired ortho-quinone catalyst; 3) intermediate strategy for chiral latent carbocation catalysis based on natural carbocation process. Each section includes brief introduction of the biological origin, design of catalyst, development of methodology as well as the underlying mechanistic insights. What is the most favorite and original chemistry developed in your research group? I hope it's always the next one. How do you get into this specific field? Could you please share some experiences with our readers? Nature provides many astonishing catalytic machineries for building up molecular complexity and harnessing energy in the most efficient ways. Nature's recipe for catalysis serves as a starting point to develop new catalyst for synthetic and energy chemistry. I was trained as a synthetic chemist in a physical organic group in Nankai and ICCAS, and spent part of my graduate studies doing enzymatic synthesis of oligosaccharide and its related biological applications in Ohio State University. This gave me a mixed view on organocatalysis, then under its golden stage of renaissance, not only for its synthetic potentials as a new catalytic concept, but also with an eye on its biological origin and possible impact beyondsynthesis. I also benefit a lot from the physical organic chemistry training which helps to shape my research path in width and depth, in a way I never imagined and expected at the beginning of my career. How do you supervise your students? Try to inspire beyond instruct. I learned and am still learning. "(sic)?(sic)(sic) " is easy to say than to do. In reality, I become bossy the way I dislike and have to instruct heavily. What is the most important personality for scientific research? Curiosity, broad reading and sufficient "free time " for daydreaming. In order to have enough time to waste, you have to work really hard at first. Who influences you mostly in your life? My Ph.D. supervisor, Prof. Jin-Pei Cheng who teaches me a rational and quantitative view for chemistry and inspires me all the time to pursue a rational approach in research.

Abstract:To tackle the grand twin challenges of sustainable energy supply and climate change, Small Structures of the advanced catalysts can play a central role in not only promoting the energy conversion such as green hydrogen production and energy storage, but also mitigating green-house gas threats for value-added fuel conversion. Catalysis, one of the most active and diversified research fields, is pivotal to achieving the zero-emission target in the coming decades. The significant advancements have been witnessed in material design, experimental technology, and fundamental knowledge. To document the state-of-the-art of these advances, this Special Issue features 7 research articles and 8 reviews, covering a broad spectrum of the advanced catalysis for renewable energy conversion and storage: electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and thermal catalysis. Focusing on water splitting reactions for green hydrogen production, there are three review articles about the design of new catalysts including 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Q Zhang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200109) and Ni-based MOFs (D H Taffa et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200263), and advances in in situ characterization platforms (J-F Li et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200201). Four research articles introduce new photocatalytic hydrogen processes based on mesoporous semiconductors (R Marschall et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200184) and 2D carbon nitride catalysts (L Wang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200264), photoelectrochemical water oxidation using doped titania nanotubes (K Maeda et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200229), and porous carbon based electrocatalytic water splitting reactions (Y Yamauchi et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200235). B-Y Xia et al. present their perspectives on water splitting at a larger scale, discussing the challenges and strategies for proton-exchange-membrane-based water electrolyzers (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200130). To mitigate the carbon dioxide impact on our environment, H Jang and co-workers review single-atom catalyst design for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200236), and R Xu et al. present a research article on the 2D covalent organic framework catalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200233). J Scott's team focuses on the conversion of CO2 to valuable light olefins (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200285). Relating to the concept of catalytic process for value-added products, G Wu and co-workers present the electrochemical nitrate conversion to ammonia (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200202), whereas J Liang and co-workers provide a critical overview on the electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reactions (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200266). In a research article, K Nakajima's team demonstrate their strategy to catalytic de-hydration of glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200224). By using the concept of synergistic catalysis, B-Q Li, Q Zhang, and co-workers investigate high-performing catalysts for an energy storage system of lithium-sulfur batteries (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200205). The guest editors do wish this special issue can shed light on the catalytic reaction mechanism and understanding of rational catalyst design in this fast-growing research field. We believe that the sustained research effort in rational Small Structure innovation would make big impact on sustainable energy supply and climate change.

Abstract:The appropriate catalysts can accelerate the reaction rate and effectively boost the efficient conversion of various molecules, which is of great importance in the study of chemistry, chemical industry, energy, materials and environmental science. Therefore, efficient, environmentally friendly, and easy to operate synthesis methods have been used to prepare various types of catalysts. Although previous studies have reported the synthesis and characterization of the aforementioned catalysts, more still remain in trial and error methods, without in-depth consideration and improvement of traditional synthesis methods. Here, we comprehensively summarize and compare the preparation methods of the trial-and-error synthesis strategy, structure-activity relationships and density functional theory (DFT) guided catalysts rational design for nanomaterials and atomically dispersed catalysts. We also discuss in detail the utilization of the nanomaterials and single atom catalysts for converting small molecules (H 2 O, O 2 , CO 2 , N 2 , etc.) into value-added products driven by electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. Finally, the challenges and outlooks of mass preparation and production of efficient and green catalysts through conventional trial and error synthesis and DFT theory are featured in accordance with its current development.

Abstract:"Why?" is the question that initiates science. "Why?" is also the answer that maintains science. This interrogative adverb fuels the scientific career of Robert Schlögl. Robert is a dedicated solid-state chemist who has found his specialization in untangling the working principles of heterogeneous catalysts under realistic conditions. As such he combines the full complexity of real catalysts with tailor-made operando experiments to overcome pressure, material, and complexity gaps. His ability to quickly abstract the meaning of spectroscopic and microscopic data, his talent to ask the right question paired with curiosity, diligence, and creativity have made him a world-leading expert in heterogeneous catalysis and energy science. His scientific passion is focused on untangling chemical dynamics as well as working principles and understanding the important interplay of geometric and electronic structures in functional materials. Thereby his research interests involve ammonia and methanol synthesis, carbon materials in catalysis, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, selective oxidation, and the development of operando setups for microscopy and spectroscopy. He also has a strong commitment to society in scientifically accelerating the energy transition ("Energiewende") in Europe, where he focuses on CO2 utilization and hydrogen as an energy carrier. This is manifested in three recent large Germany-wide projects: Carbon2Chem, CatLab, and TransHyDe.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials of diverse architecture are ubiquitous in industrial catalysis. They offer exciting prospects to tackle various sustainability challenges faced by society. Since the introduction of the concept a century ago, researchers aspire to control the chemical identity, local environment and electronic properties of active sites on catalytic surfaces to optimize their reactivity in given applications. Nowadays, numerous strategies exist to tailor these characteristics with varying levels of atomic precision. Making headway relies upon the existence of analytical approaches able to resolve relevant structural features and remains challenging due to the inherent complexity even of the simplest heterogeneous catalysts, and to dynamic effects often occurring under reaction conditions. Computational methods play a complementary and ever-increasing role in pushing forward the design. Here, we examine how nanoscale engineering can enhance the selectivity and stability of catalysts. We highlight breakthroughs towards their commercialization and identify directions to guide future research and innovation.

Abstract:Catalysts are vital for clean energy and green chemistry but often rely on expensive metals. This review highlights advancements in earth‐abundant catalysts, focusing on innovative strategies, including descriptor‐guided design, high‐throughput calculation, machine learning, and biomimetic design. It provides a roadmap for high‐performance catalyst development toward sustainability, discussing fundamental principles, current challenges, and outlook. Catalysis is crucial for clean energy, green chemistry, and environmental remediation, but traditional methods rely on expensive and scarce precious metals. This review addresses this challenge by highlighting the promise of earth‐abundant catalysts and the recent advancements in their rational design. Innovative strategies such as physics‐inspired descriptors, high‐throughput computational techniques, and artificial intelligence (AI)‐assisted design with machine learning (ML) are explored, moving beyond time‐consuming trial‐and‐error approaches. Additionally, biomimicry, inspired by efficient enzymes in nature, offers valuable insights. This review systematically analyses these design strategies, providing a roadmap for developing high‐performance catalysts from abundant elements. Clean energy applications (water splitting, fuel cells, batteries) and green chemistry (ammonia synthesis, CO2 reduction) are targeted while delving into the fundamental principles, biomimetic approaches, and current challenges in this field. The way to a more sustainable future is paved by overcoming catalyst scarcity through rational design.

Abstract:The Academic chemical literature (and much current teaching to University Students) still often describes “Green Chemistry,” as having originated in the late 1990s from the United States EPA, the “12 Principles of Green Chemistry”, and/or Academia. But all of the “12 Principles” had already been in “un-enunciated” Industrial practice and had produced many commercialized examples of environmentally favorable chemical products and processes in major segments of Industry, long before the 1990s. This article briefly reviews the early 1990s publications of Professor Barry Trost and Roger Sheldon that spread awareness of the importance of catalysis to the evolving “Green Chemical” concepts of “Atom Economy”, the “E-Factor” metrics, and into Academic “Green Chemistry” research. Trost and Sheldon’s publications admitted that catalysis and “Atom Economy” had been in practice in the commodity chemicals industry for decades, but encouraged more use of those techniques and concepts in the Fine Chemical and Pharmaceutical industry segments, and into Academic research and the teaching of organic chemistry, years before the words “Green Chemistry” or the “12 Principles” came into literature use. Abstract:Synthetic organic chemistry experienced a significant advance in the last quarter of the 20th century with the advent of the transition-metal catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The utility of these reactions was universally acknowledged and expressed in the Chemistry Nobel prize awarded to professors Heck, Suzuki and Negishi in 2010. In this scenario, the discovery of the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction was a landmark that occupies a privileged position because of its versatility, compatibility and pivotal contribution to diverse disciplines, including materials science and drug discovery. Despite the substantial progress attained for this reaction until 2010, there is still room for improvement, particularly, if we are concerned about the health of the Earth and aware of the paramount importance to produce substances under the guidelines of sustainable and Green Chemistry. In the present review, we summarize the efforts devoted by a wide and specialized scientific community to upgrade the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction during the post-Nobel prize period. An overview covering new catalytic systems, methods and conditions is provided, together with some applications and updated mechanistic viewpoints.

Abstract:“Bioinspired catalysis” is a newly-added section since the second edition “Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II—From Elements to Applications” in 2013. In the 2013 edition, there were four related sections in “Volume 6, Part 4: Biologically Inspired Catalytic Processes”, which included “Biocatalysis by Metalloenzymes” by Torres and Ayala, “Biomacromolecules as Ligands for Artificial Metalloenzymes” by Hamels and Ward, “Hydrocarbon Oxidations Catalyzed by Bio-Inspired Nonheme Iron and Copper Catalysts” by Oloo and Que., and “Artificial Metalloproteases and Metallonucleases” by Suh. As of this writing in June 2022, striking advances have taken place in such a wide topic as bioinspired catalysis. Based on the catalytic applications, we selected three sub-topics from the scientific discoveries and updates: oxidation, energy-relevant catalysis, and bond-forming reactions. Since each of the three sub-topics is a big research field itself, naturally, there are many excellent reports that we failed to include or mention.
