Abstract:The appropriate catalysts can accelerate the reaction rate and effectively boost the efficient conversion of various molecules, which is of great importance in the study of chemistry, chemical industry, energy, materials and environmental science. Therefore, efficient, environmentally friendly, and easy to operate synthesis methods have been used to prepare various types of catalysts. Although previous studies have reported the synthesis and characterization of the aforementioned catalysts, more still remain in trial and error methods, without in-depth consideration and improvement of traditional synthesis methods. Here, we comprehensively summarize and compare the preparation methods of the trial-and-error synthesis strategy, structure-activity relationships and density functional theory (DFT) guided catalysts rational design for nanomaterials and atomically dispersed catalysts. We also discuss in detail the utilization of the nanomaterials and single atom catalysts for converting small molecules (H 2 O, O 2 , CO 2 , N 2 , etc.) into value-added products driven by electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. Finally, the challenges and outlooks of mass preparation and production of efficient and green catalysts through conventional trial and error synthesis and DFT theory are featured in accordance with its current development.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the reform of catalyst preparation methods, transitioning from trial-and-error synthesis to rational design, particularly in the fields of nanomaterials and single-atom catalysts. The following are the key issues the paper attempts to address: 1. **The Role and Importance of Catalysts**: The paper emphasizes the accelerating role of catalysts in chemical reactions and their application value in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, energy, materials, and environmental science. 2. **Limitations of Traditional Trial-and-Error Methods**: Traditional catalyst preparation methods often rely on trial-and-error, lacking in-depth consideration and improvements to conventional synthesis methods, which limits further enhancement of catalyst performance. 3. **Rationally Designed Catalysts**: The paper proposes the rational design of catalysts guided by Structure-Activity Relationships (SAR) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) to overcome the limitations of trial-and-error methods, achieving efficient, environmentally friendly, and easy-to-operate catalyst preparation. 4. **Nanomaterials and Single-Atom Catalysts**: It discusses in detail the preparation strategies for nanomaterials and single-atom catalysts, especially their applications in converting small molecules (such as H2O, O2, CO2, N2, etc.) into high-value-added products (such as H2, CxHyOz, NH3, etc.) under electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. 5. **Future Challenges and Prospects**: The paper also mentions the challenges faced in the large-scale preparation of green and efficient catalysts and provides an outlook on future research directions, including precise characterization of catalyst structures, rational identification of active sites, and the use of advanced characterization techniques and theories to improve synthesis efficiency. In summary, the paper aims to systematically summarize and compare the application of trial-and-error synthesis strategies and rational design methods in catalyst preparation, with special attention to the latest advancements in nanomaterials and single-atom catalysts, as well as their potential in addressing global energy shortages and environmental issues.
