Abstract:Understanding the hydration kinetics and interactions of hydration products of cement components with chlorides is crucial for designing durable cement-based materials. The most reactive component of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), tricalcium aluminate (C 3 A), was investigated on its hydration kinetics, chloride binding behaviors and hydrated phase assemblages through multiple ex-situ and in-situ methods. The hydrated phases of C 3 A demonstrated different chloride binding isotherms in NaCl and CaCl 2 solutions at different ages. Chloride ions can suppress the formation of calcium aluminate hydrates (OH-AFm and C 3 AH 6 ) while calcium ions were favorable to increase the content of hydrocalumite (Cl-AFm) and regulate its crystal structure. The carbonation process deteriorated the chloride binding capacity of C 3 A pastes through producing more calcium mono/hemi-carboaluminate phases (Mc/Hc) or forming a solid solution between Mc and Cl-AFm. These findings can be used as a guide for corrosion protection design of cement-based materials.

Abstract:Hydration resistance of synthesized MgO–CaO clinker was improved by surface modification using oleic acid, stearic acid, or complex acids as modifiers, with phosphoric acid as a reference. Unmodified and modified samples were evaluated using a powdering resistance test, weight change test, and flowability test. The remarkable effects of the modifiers on the hydration resistance and flowability of the clinker were manifested, and the complex modifier caused the most significant effect. The mechanism involved the formation of calcium‐containing films on the surfaces of the clinker particles, which protected them from hydration. The flowability of the clinker also increased with improved hydration resistance because of the decreased bonded‐moisture content. Comparison of infrared spectra between unmodified and modified samples confirmed the formation of surface films.

Abstract:Phosphate modified calcium aluminate cement (CAPC) has been demonstrated to be superior to Portland cement under harsh conditions including high temperature and severe corrosiveness. A systematic and quantitative investigation into phase evolution of hardened CAPC pastes cured under 60 degrees C is conducted to lay a technical basis for cementing CO2 storage wells. It is found that increasing phosphate dosage results in decreasing contents of C3AH6 and AH3, the typical hydration products of calcium aluminate cement (CAC), and increasing content of C-A-P-H gel in hardened CAPC pastes. The critical phosphate dosage for complete depletion of C3AH6 lies in 20%-30% by weight of CAC. Furthermore, C-A-P-H gel, known as the characteristic reaction product of CAPC, is proposed to be constituted of Na-substituted nano-hydroxyapatite and pseudo boehmite clusters. Hardened CAPC pastes exhibit remarkably smaller pore sizes due to C-A-P-H gel, explaining their higher compressive strength compared with hardened CAC pastes.

Abstract:We report a new class of glycerol–water system to transform FGD gypsum into α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) mediated by trace NaCl and Na2EDTA to regulate the phase transformation rate as well as the crystal morphology to achieve crystals with high mechanical strength. NaCl plays a role in accelerating the nucleation and crystal growth process, whereas Na2EDTA regulates the morphology of α-HH from columnar to lamellar. The paste made from columnar α-HH with higher aspect ratio deserves higher dry bending/compressive strength of 13.6/37.6 MPa, which is comparable with those prepared in nitrate–water medium, chloride–water medium, or by autoclave method. This study provides an improved alternative of glycerol–water system to transform FGD gypsum into α-HH with controlled morphology, high mechanical strength, and less corrosion to the equipment. We also establish the relationship between the mechanical strength of paste and the aspect ratio of α-HH crystals.

Abstract:Alkali activated materials are regarded as a substitution building material of Portland Cement (PC) with high chloride resistance and low CO 2 footprint. This review study provides a multi-scale perspective to understand material-product-microstructure-property relationships in terms of chloride binding behavior of AAMs. Physical and chemical chloride stability of different reaction products is summarized from nanostructure, microstructure to macro properties. The analysis of cited studies are determined to give an overview of recent progress in chloride transport in AAMs influenced by different reaction products. Results show that higher Ca/Si, Al/Si molar and alkali content increase amorphous phases formation, leading to a denser microstructure and lower chloride penetration in AAMs. Higher MgO and Al 2 O 3 incorporation results in more formation of hydrotalcite. The enhanced physical and chemical absorption of chloride by hydrotalcite leads to higher resistance of chloride penetration in AAMs. The investigation of increasing chloride resistance can potentially focus on the increase of gels and hydrotalcite formation.

Performance and Nanostructure Simulation of Phosphogypsum Modified by Sodium Carbonate and Alum

Abstract:This paper presents a new modification of the nanostructure of CaSO4·2H2O crystals containing nanopores. This nanoporous structure was achieved in phosphogypsum samples that were modified by sodium carbonate and alum. The effects of sodium carbonate and alum on the properties of phosphogypsum were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods were used to explore the micro-mechanism of the composite system. Subsequently, molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the nanopore structures of the modified CaSO4·2H2O. The results show that the addition of sodium carbonate and alum reduced the absolute dry density by 23.1% compared with the original phosphogypsum sample, with a bending strength of 2.1 MPa and compressive strength of 7.5 MPa. In addition, new hydration products, sodium sulfate and sodium aluminum sulfate, were formed in the sample doped with sodium carbonate and alum. A new nanostructure of CaSO4·2H2O crystal containing nanopores was formed. Molecular simulations show that the hydration products were responsible for the surface nanopore formation, which was the main factor leading to an increase in mechanical strength. The presented nanopore structure yields lightweight and high strength properties in the modified phosphogypsum.

Abstract:Chloride-induced corrosion in reinforced concrete is a primary durability issue that causes large economic loss every year. To improve the intrinsic chloride binding capacity and realize a favorable corrosion protection of cement-based materials are thus crucial to prolong the service life of concrete structures. Here, alumina nano particles (ANPs) were incorporated to improve the chloride binding capacity of cement pastes in chloride solutions and the anti-corrosion performance of mortars under accelerated corrosion process. The ANPs facilitated the formation of alumino-ferrite-mono (AFm)-type phases, thereby improved the content of chemically bound chlorides. Solution calcium (Ca) ions benefited the chloride captured by calcium-(alumino)silicate-hydrates (C-(A-)S–H) in the assistance of ANPs, especially at high initial chloride concentrations, and further evoked a pH-related chloride binding response. Moreover, the enhanced corrosion resistance was finally realized by incorporating appropriate amount of ANPs because of the filling and chemical effects induced low permeability of mortars. In general, the ANPs possess dual functions in the aspects of chloride binding and corrosion inhibition. These findings are expected to advance the design of high-durable cement-based materials serviced in the marine environment.

Abstract:Hygroscopicity is an obstacle to the widespread use of aluminum phosphate binders, but there is still a lack of relevant fundamental research on this topic. Here, the curing behavior, thermal evolution, phase development and hygroscopic behavior of acid aluminum phosphate (AAP) solutions with different P/Al ratios (2.50–4.00) have been systematically investigated. We comprehensively elucidate for the first time the hygroscopic mechanism of AAP and its derived aluminum phosphate, and establish a dynamic relationship between hygroscopic mechanism, moisture absorption rate, microstructure and phase composition. AAP and its derived aluminum phosphate, namely Al(H2PO4)3, AlH2P3O10, residual H3PO4, [HPO3] n and hydroxyl groups are all hygroscopic. The hygroscopic properties of AAP depend on the phase composition, which is determined by the P/Al ratio and the calcination temperature. Due to the formation of Berlinite and Al8H12(P2O7)9, the reduced formation of AlH2P3O10 and the absence of H3PO4, [HPO3] n and hydroxyl groups, the AAP solution with a P/Al< 3.00 and its derived aluminum phosphate exhibit relatively lower hygroscopicity. Meanwhile, increasing the calcination temperature can also improve the hygroscopicity resistance characteristics. This work complements the basic knowledge of AAP systems, especially those with a P/Al< 3.00. This sets the stage for the fabrication of aluminum phosphate binders and aluminum phosphate-based composites with excellent hygroscopicity resistance properties.

Abstract:In this study, it was proposed to use tricalcium aluminate (C 3 A) as modifier to promote the working performance, early strength and volume stability of phosphogypsum-based full solid-waste cementitious material (PSC). The PSC was composed of 60 % β-hemihydrate phosphogypsum (β-HPG), 30 % ground blast-furnace slag (BFS) and 10 % steel slag (SS). Fluidity, setting time, hydration process and phases and volume shrinkage rate were discussed, and the mechanism behind was revealed. The results showed that the addition of 0.5–4 % C 3 A contributed to the transformation of the PSC from high fluid to fast molding by shortening the setting time of the PSC, increased both the early and late mechanical properties by optimizing hydration products and structures, and improved the volume stability by increasing the generation AFt and C-S-H gel. Especially when the C 3 A content was 4 %, the 2 h compressive strength of the system reached 2 MPa, the 1 d compressive strength increased by 60 % and the 60 d compressive strength increased by 20 % compared with the blank group; the setting time of the system was shortened by about 1 h; the volume shrinkage rate of the system was reduced by about 50 %. Based on these changes of macroscopic properties, the hydration products and hydration process of the PSC were further analyzed by means of XRD, TG-DTG, thermal analysis of hydration, scanning electron microscope, etc. The influence mechanism of C 3 A on the PSC was comprehensively discussed, and the environmental assessments were provided. The research content and results of this paper could provide a theoretical basis for the application of PSC in practical engineering.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) is a solid waste discharged from the industrial wet production of phosphoric acid. In order to improve the utilization rate of PG and understand the performance of PG mixed with calcium aluminate cement (CAC), it is necessary to determine the effect of different dosages of PG on the performance of CAC. therefore, this study investigated the hydration properties and compressive strength of PG and CAC mixtures. PG was added into CAC in an equal proportion, and the hydrated products were studied by XRD, TG-DTG, SEM and MIP methods. The research demonstrate that with the increase of PG content, the setting time and flowability of CAC pastes gradually decreased, and the compressive strength increased gradually. However, when the content of PG is greater than 15%, the growth rate of compressive strength of CAC becomes slower. The presence of PG resulted in the complete disappearance of the hydration products CAH 10 and C 2 AH 8 of CAC. With the increase of PG content, the pore size distribution of CAC paste was changed, and its main hydration products were transformed into ettringite, AFm and AH 3 , which became the main source of affecting the compressive strength of CAC.

Abstract:The idea of controlled release of high valence counter ions was used in direct coagulation casting of ceramics. Calcium phosphate was used as the high valence counter ions source. Influence of the content of calcium phosphate on the viscosity of the suspension with positive charge on particles and the properties of green body were investigated. The results show that the content of calcium phosphate which leads to coagulation of suspension is 0.15–0.2 wt%. The pH changes from acidic regime to basic regime after calcium phosphate addition. Hydrochloric acid is consumed and CaHPO4, Ca(H2PO4)2, and CaCl2 are generated. The electrical double layer of alumina particles is strongly compressed by Ca2+ ions, leading to rapid increase of viscosity. Also, the pH value at high temperature approaches to isoelectric point of alumina and contributes to the instability of suspension. The optimum coagulated temperature is 60°C with coagulation time of 135 min. The compressive strength of green body is up to 2.8 MPa.

Abstract:A preparation method of core-shell structured CaO aggregates and its hydration resistance were investigated in this paper. Ca(OH)2 granules were obtained by granulation method and then soaked in Al chelating compound (hereinafter called ACC) ethanol solution, after that Ca(OH)2 granules were fired at different temperatures. The obtained CaO granules were characterized by measurements of crystalline phase formation, bulk density, apparent porosity, hydration resistance, pore size distribution, cylindrical crushing strength and microstructural analysis. It can be seen from the results that core-shell structured CaO granules with excellent hydration resistance can be prepared after treated with ACC and a protective shell layer was found on the surface of the granules. The ACC promoted the liquid phase sintering of CaO granules, which led to the grain growth and increased the density of granules. CaO grains were bonded by the tricalcium aluminate (C3A) and the apparent porosity of the aggregate was reduced after heating, that decreased the contact area of CaO with water vapor.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of porous ceramics prepared by poly-hollow microspheres (PHMs) is usually low because of the weak bonding between different ceramic PHMs. In this paper, CaSiO3 were coated to the surface of Al2O3 PHMs through co-precipitation method as sintering additive to improve the properties of Al2O3 poly-hollow microsphere ceramics (Al2O3 PHM ceramics). The influence of different amount of CaCl2 solution on properties of the Al2O3 PHM ceramics such as phase composition, microstructure, porosity and mechanical properties were studied. The porosity of the Al2O3 PHM ceramics decreased from 77.03% to 68.16% with the increase of CaCl2 solution amount, while compressive strength increased 29 times from 0.29 MPa to 8.39 MPa. The addition of the CaSiO3 could decrease the sintering temperature of Al2O3 PHM ceramics and significantly improve the mechanical properties of Al2O3 PHM ceramics, which is beneficial for preparing highly porous Al2O3 PHM ceramics with high mechanical properties and complex shapes.

Abstract:In this study, the relationship among the hydration, microstructure and compressive strength of alkali-activated phosphorus slag (AAPS) was systematically investigated to provide a foundation for its design and application. The alkali dose and silicate modulus had both positive and negative effects on PS hydration due to the change in the pH, the concentrations of Si-containing ions and the hydrate coating on the PS surface, and the overall effect depended on their relative magnitudes. The hydration of waterglass-activated phosphorus slag (WAPS) experienced a transformation of NASH first into CNASH (low Ca) and then into CNASH (high Ca) due to the stronger polarization ability of Ca2+ over Na+, and the gel transformation was accompanied by dealumination. The more early hydrates there were, the higher the early densification and early compressive strength of AAPS. The later densification and later compressive strength were influenced by a combination of the hydrate content, early hydration rate and gel type. CNASH (high Na) was incompatible with CNASH (low Na), which degraded the later densification. When the contents of later hydrates were comparable, the slower early hydration and lower CNASH (high Na) contributed to the greater later densification and compressive strength.

Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical properties of calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) were investigated using CLAYFF force field molecular dynamics simulations. A computational study was conducted to define a structural model for C-A-S-H gels formed in Al-containing cement pastes. A series of amorphous C-A-S-H were constructed randomly starting from the building blocks, including Ca 2+ , Al 3+ , Si 4+ , O 2- , OH - , and H 2 O. Trajectory analysis shows that the polymerization degree of the SiO 4 chain did not change with increasing Al content. Instead, AlO 4 acted as a chain linker to form the Si-O-Al structure and the branching network structure of the C-A-S-H phase. Meanwhile, the integration of Al into C-S-H had little effect on the elastic modulus of C-S-H. Theoretical simulation results are in good agreement with many experimental data and indicate the universal applicability of the stochastic packing C-A-S-H modeling method to describe the microstructure and mechanical properties of C-A-S-H.

Abstract:In this paper, the Al2O3 poly-hollow microspheres (PHM) were used to prepare novel Al2O3 PHM ceramics. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the Al2O3 PHM ceramics, the Al2O3 PHMs were coated with CaSiO3 sintering additive via co-precipitation method. The effect of CaCl2 solution content on the properties of the Al2O3 PHM ceramics was investigated. With the increase of the CaCl2 solution content, the porosity of the Al2O3 PHM ceramics decreases, while the shrinkage, flexural strength and fracture toughness increase. When the CaCl2 solution content is 8mL, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the Al2O3 PHM ceramics are as high as 191.09MPa and 3.74MPa·m1/2, respectively. It is found that coating the Al2O3 PHMs with sintering additive via co-precipitation method could effectively improve the properties of the novel Al2O3 PHM ceramics.
Recycling phosphogypsum as the sole calcium oxide source in calcium sulfoaluminate cement production and solidification of phosphorus

Abstract:Because the disposal of phosphogypsum (PG) can lead to serious contamination of the air, soil, and water, recycling of PG has attracted wide attention. This study investigated the effect and solidification of phosphorus in the production of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement using PG as the sole CaO source. The effects of three phosphorus impurities (Ca3(PO4)2, CaHPO4, Ca(H2PO4)2) on the decomposition of CaSO4, formation of minerals, microstructure of the clinker, and the hydration and mechanical properties of the cement were studied. Experimental results show that Ca3(PO4)2 and Ca(H2PO4)2 promoted the decomposition of CaSO4 and the formation of clinker minerals with the increase in P2O5 content, whereas CaHPO4 showed a promoting effect only when the P2O5 content was more than 1.5 wt%. The increase in phosphorus incorporation in Ca2SiO4 leads to the transformation of β-Ca2SiO4 to α'-Ca2SiO4 and then to Ca7Si2P2O16. The presence of three phosphates in the clinker enhanced the growth of crystal grains and the generation of a liquid phase. Compared with Ca4Al6SO16 without phosphorus, the hydration reaction of phosphorus-bearing Ca4Al6SO16 started later and ended earlier, and the reaction time was shorter. The presence of phosphorus impurities reduces the 1-day strength of CSA cement but does not affect the development of the 3-day and 28-day strengths. Considering environmental aspects, the solidification of phosphorus in the production of CSA clinker were quantified by measuring the distribution of elements. The results indicated that phosphorus is solidified by Ca4Al6SO16, Ca2SiO4, and Ca4Al2Fe2O10, and Ca2SiO4 has a stronger ability to solidify phosphorus than the other two minerals. Ca3(PO4)2 is more difficult to solidify than CaHPO4 and Ca(H2PO4)2. This study is of great significant to guide the large-scale clean utilization of PG in the production of CSA cement.

Chloride Binding in Cement Paste with Calcined Mg-Al-CO3 LDH (CLDH) under Different Conditions

Abstract:The chloride binding capacity of cement paste with Mg-Al CLDH, obtained through calcining a commercial LDH, is investigated under different chloride concentration, environmental temperature, and concrete pore solution alkalinity conditions. The transformation mechanism of Mg-Al CLDH to Mg-Al-Cl LDH is mainly explored by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) , Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTG). There appears to be a threshold chloride concentration of 1.0 mol/L for Mg-Al CLDH (6% incorporation) effectively enhancing the chloride binding capacity of cement paste. Both lowering and raising (>38 degrees C) the environmental temperature is disadvantage to the transformation of Mg-Al CLDH to Mg-Al-Cl LDH in cement paste, and the amount of bound chloride at different curing temperatures follows as 38 degrees C > 50 degrees C approximate to 20 degrees C > 3 degrees C. Higher pore solution alkalinity is also adverse to both of the formation of Friedel's salt and the rehydration of CLDH. With increasing pH from 12.5 to 13.5, the improvement of Mg-Al CLDH on the chloride binding capacity of cement paste became weaker. Mg-Al CLDH improves the chloride binding capacity of cement paste is not only related to the excellent anions exchanging ability of it , but also related to the promotion of Friedel's salt formation of it. Abstract:Abstract Portland cement (PC) is ubiquitously used in construction for centuries, yet the elucidation of its early-age hydration remains a challenge. Understanding the initial hydration progress of tricalcium aluminate (C 3 A) at molecular scale is thus crucial for tackling this challenge as it exhibits a proclivity for early-stage hydration and plays a pivotal role in structural build-up of cement colloids. Herein, we implement a series of ab-initio calculations to probe the intricate molecular interactions of C 3 A during its initial hydration process. The C 3 A surface exhibits remarkable chemical activity in promoting water dissociation, which in turn facilitates the gradual desorption of Ca ions through a metal-proton exchange reaction. The dissolution pathways and free energies of these Ca ions follow the ligand-exchange mechanism with multiple sequential reactions to form the ultimate products where Ca ions adopt fivefold or sixfold coordination. Finally, these Ca complexes reprecipitate on the remaining Al-rich layer through the interface-coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism, demonstrating dynamically stable inner-sphere adsorption states. The above results are helpful in unmasking the early-age hydration of PC and advancing the rational design of cement-based materials through the bottom-up approach.
