Abstract:Clad components, particularly titanium clad, are increasingly used in industry, because of their resistance to chemical attack and of their mechanical properties. After referring to the manufacture of titanium clad components, the TIG welding technology of such items is discussed (edge preparation, procedure, equipment, filler metals) and the importance of welder and procedure qualifications is emphasised. The authors then examine typical defects in the welding of titanium clad components, the types of test used and the relevant heat treatments. Finally, a typical example of an application is illustrated, namely welding of tubes to titanium-plated tube plates for heat exchangers.
