Abstract:We review recent theoretical results, demonstrating breakdown of the equivalence between active and passive gravitational masses and energy due to quantum effects in General Relativity. In particular, we discuss the simplest composite quantum body - a hydrogen atom - and define its gravitational masses operators. Using Gedanken experiment, we show that the famous Einstein's equation, $E =mc^2$, is broken with small probability for passive gravitational mass of the atom. It is important that the expectation values of both active and passive gravitational masses satisfy the above mentioned equation for stationary quantum states. Nevertheless, we stress that, for quantum superpositions of stationary states in a hydrogen atom, where the expectation values of energy are constant, the expectation values of the masses oscillate in time and, thus, break the Einstein's equation. We briefly discuss experimental possibility to observe the above-mentioned time-dependent oscillations. In this review, we also improve several drawbacks of the original pioneering works.

Abstract:We use the large-N approximation to find an exotic phase of a cold, two-dimensional, N-component Fermi gas which exhibits dynamically broken approximate scale symmetry. We identify a particular weakly damped collective excitation as the dilaton, the pseudo-Goldstone boson associated with the broken approximate scale symmetry. We argue that the symmetry breaking phase is stable for a range of parameters of the theory and there is a fluctuation induced first order quantum phase transition between the normal and the scale symmetry breaking phases which can be driven by tuning the chemical potential. We find that the compressibility of the gas at its lower critical density is anomalously large, 2N times that of a perfect gas at the same density.

Dilaton in a Multicritical 3+epsilon-D Parity Violating Field Theory

Abstract:The multi-critical behaviour of an approximately scale and conformal invariant quantum field theory, which can be regarded as the deformation of the critical Gross-Neveu model in 3+epsilon dimensions by a nearly marginal parity violating operator, is studied using a large $N$ expansion. When epsilon is greater than a number of order 1/N, the deformation is marginally relevant and it is found to exhibit spontaneous breaking of the approximate scale symmetry accompanied by the appearance of a light scalar in its spectrum. The scalar mass is parametrically small, of order epsilon times the fermion mass and it can be identified with a light dilaton. When the dimension is reduced to 3 the deformation of the Gross-Neveu model becomes marginally irrelevant, what was a minimum of the potential becomes a maximum and the theory has a non-perturbative global instability. There is a metastable perturbative phase where the scalar does not condense and the fermions are massless separated by an energy barrier with height of order one (rather than N) from an energetically favoured phase with a runaway condensate.

Violation of the Einstein's Equivalence Principle for a Composite Quantum Body

Abstract:Recently, we have started to investigate behavior of a composite quantum body in an external gravitational field in the framework of General Relativity [see, for a review, A. G. Lebed, Mod. Phys. Lett. A, {\bf 35}, 2030010 (2020)]. As the simplest example, we have considered a hydrogen atom in a weak gravitational field. Our results are the following. The Einstein's Equivalence Principle survives for the most of macroscopic ensembles of the atoms, containing the stationary quantum states. On the other hand, we have demonstrated that this principle is sometimes broken. In particular, it is broken for the so-called Gravitational demons, which are the coherent macroscopic ensembles of two or more stationary quantum states in the hydrogen atoms. In the above cited paper we have considered the Gedanken experiment, where the gravitational field is suddenly switched on in a free from gravitation space. In the current paper we consider the much more realistic from experimental point of view Gedanken experiment and come to the same conclusion about violations of the Einstein's Equivalence Principle for the Gravitational demons.

Abstract:We study the mechanism of topological mass-generation for 3d Chern-Simons gauge theories and propose a brand-new Topological Equivalence Theorem to connect scattering amplitudes of the physical gauge boson states to that of the transverse states under high energy expansion. We prove a general energy cancellation mechanism for $N$-point physical gauge boson amplitudes, which predicts large cancellations of $E^{4-L}\to E^{(4-L)- N}$ at any $L$-loop level ($L\geqslant 0$). We extend the double-copy approach to construct massive graviton amplitudes and study their structures. We newly uncover a series of strikingly large energy cancellations $E^{12}\to E^1$ of the tree-level four-graviton scattering amplitude under high energy expansion and establish a new correspondence between the two energy cancellations in the topologically massive Yang-Mills gauge theory and the topologically massive gravity theory. We further study the scattering amplitudes of Chern-Simons gauge bosons and gravitons in the nonrelativistic limit.

D 73, 105009 (2006)] have studied the dynamical generation of masses for fundamental fermions in strongly coupled QED in the presence of weak magnetic fields. We argue that the results and conclusions of the article are not reliable as they are subject to gauge dependent artifacts resulting from an inconsistent truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations.

Abstract:In recent years, $f(Q)$ gravity has enjoyed considerable attention in the literature and important results have been obtained. However, the question of how many physical degrees of freedom the theory propagates -- and how this number may depend on the form of the function $f$ -- has not been answered satisfactorily. In this article we show that a Hamiltonian analysis based on the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm -- one of the standard methods to address this type of question -- fails. We isolate the source of the failure, show that other commonly considered teleparallel theories of gravity are affected by the same problem, and we point out that the number of degrees of freedom obtained in Phys. Rev. D 106 no. 4, (2022) by K. Hu, T. Katsuragawa, and T. Qui (namely eight), based on the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm, is wrong. Using a different approach, we show that the upper bound on the degrees of freedom is seven. Finally, we propose a more promising strategy for settling this important question.

Weak equivalence principle violation for mixed scalar particles

Abstract:We investigate the non-relativistic limit of the Klein--Gordon equation for mixed scalar particles and show that, in this regime, one unavoidably arrives at redefining the particle's inertial mass. This happens because, in contrast to the case when mixing is absent, the antiparticle sector contribution cannot be neglected for particles with definite flavor. To clearly demonstrate this feature, we adopt the Feshbach--Villars formalism for Klein--Gordon particles. Furthermore, within the same framework, we also demonstrate that, in the presence of a weak gravitational field, the mass parameter that couples to gravity (gravitational mass) does not match the effective inertial mass. This, in turn, implies a violation of the weak equivalence principle. Finally, we prove that the Bargmann's superselection rule, which prohibits oscillating particles on the basis of the Galilean transformation, is incompatible with the non-relativistic limit of the Lorentz transformation and hence does not collide with the results obtained.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to derive limits on various forms of "new physics" using atomic experimental data. Interactions with dark energy and dark matter fields can lead to space-time variations of fundamental constants, which can be detected through atomic spectroscopy. In this study, we examine the effects of a varying nuclear mass mN and nuclear radius rN on two transition ratios: the comparison of the two-photon transition in atomic hydrogen with the hyperfine transition in Cs133 based clocks, and the ratio of optical clock frequencies in Al+ and Hg+ . The sensitivity of these frequency ratios to changes in mN and rN enables us to derive new limits on the variations of the proton mass, quark mass, and the QCD parameter θ . Additionally, we consider the scalar field generated by the Yukawa-type interaction of feebly interacting hypothetical scalar particles with Standard Model particles in the presence of massive bodies such as the Sun and Moon. Using the data from the Al+/Hg+ , Yb+/Cs , and Yb+(E2)/Yb+(E3) transition frequency ratios, we place constraints on the interaction of the scalar field with photons, nucleons, and electrons for a range of scalar particle masses. The Dilaton Improves Goldstones

Abstract:The free scalar field is only conformally invariant when non-minimally coupled to gravity. In flat space this amounts to amending, or improving, the energy momentum tensor. A no-go theorem prohibits the improvement for Goldstone bosons, originating from global internal spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is shown that the no-go theorem can be circumvented in the presence of a dilaton. The latter is a (pseudo) Goldstone boson originating from spontaneous conformal symmetry breaking in a theory with an infrared fixed point. Specifically, the tracelessness of the energy momentum tensor is demonstrated for a generic $d$-dimensional curved space. Additionally, the Goldstone gravitational form factors are shown to obey conformality constraints in the soft limit. The crucial point is that the remainder term of the soft theorem is non-zero due to the presence of the dilaton pole. For Goldstone systems with a trivial infrared fixed point the leading order analysis of this paper ought to be sufficient. Loop effects govern the improvement term outside the fixed point and are scheme-dependent as briefly discussed towards the end of the paper.

Backfiring Bosonisation

Abstract:For a fermionic quantum field theory in $d=1+1$ dimensions, there is a subtle difference between summing over spin structures and gauging $(-1)^F$. If the gravitational anomaly vanishes mod 16, then both operations are equivalent and yield a bosonic theory. But if the gravitational anomaly only vanishes mod 8, then only gauging $(-1)^F$ is allowed, and the result is a fermionic theory. Our goal is to understand in detail how this happens, despite the fact $(-1)^F$ is defined in terms of shifting the spin structure, which would naïvely suggest that both operations are equivalent. We do this from three perspectives: an abstract view in terms of anomalies, explicit CFT calculations, and a Symmetry TFT perspective. To conclude, we illustrate our results using the heterotic string and the famous self-triality of 8 Majorana-Weyl fermions.
