Abstract:This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:Equivalence principles played a central role in the development of general relativity. Furthermore, they have provided operative procedures for testing the validity of general relativity, or constraining competing theories of gravitation. This has led to a flourishing of different, and inequivalent, formulations of these principles, with the undesired consequence that often the same name, "equivalence principle", is associated with statements having a quite different physical meaning. In this paper we provide a precise formulation of the several incarnations of the equivalence principle, clarifying their uses and reciprocal relations. We also discuss their possible role as selecting principles in the design and classification of viable theories of gravitation.

Abstract:The Equivalence Principle is considered in the framework of metric-affine gravity. We show that it naturally emerges as a Noether symmetry starting from a general non-metric theory. In particular, we discuss the Einstein Equivalence Principle and the Strong Equivalence Principle showing their relations with the non-metricity tensor. Possible violations are also discussed pointing out the role of non-metricity in this debate.

Weak equivalence principle and nonrelativistic limit of general dispersion relations

Abstract:We study the weak equivalence principle in the context of modified dispersion relations, a prevalent approach to quantum gravity phenomenology. We find that generic modified dispersion relations violate the weak equivalence principle. The acceleration in general depends on the mass of the test body, unless the Hamiltonian is either two-homogeneous in the test particles' 4-momenta or the corresponding Lagrangian differs from the homogeneous case by a total derivative only. The key ingredient of this calculation is a $3+1$ decomposition of the parametrization invariant relativistic test particle action derived from the dispersion relation. Additionally, we apply a perturbative expansion in the test particle's spatial velocity and the inverse speed of light. To quantify our result, we provide a general formula for the Eötvós factor of modified dispersion relations. As a specific example, we study the $\kappa$-Poincaré dispersion relation. Comparing the ensuing non-vanishing Eötvós factor to recent data from the MICROSCOPE experiment, we obtain a bound of $\kappa^{-1}\geq10^{15}{\rm GeV}/c^2.$.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to resolve two fundamental issues in the dynamics of relativity: (i) Under what condition, the time-column space integrals of a Lorentz four-tensor constitute a Lorentz four-vector, and (ii) under what condition, the time-element space integral of a Lorentz four-vector is a Lorentz scalar; namely two "conservation laws", which are mispresented in traditional textbooks, and widely used in fundamental research, such as relativistic analysis of the momentum of light in a medium, and the proofs of the positive mass theorem in general relativity. To resolve issue (i), we have developed a generalized Lorentz \emph{four-vector} theorem based on the principles of classical mathematical analysis, with a simplified analytic example given to illustrate how to transform a space integral from one inertial frame to another, and a strict mathematical derivation provided to confirm the effect of Lorentz contraction. We use this four-vector theorem to verify M{\o}ller's theorem, and surprisingly find that M{\o}ller's theorem is fundamentally wrong. We provide a corrected version of M{\o}ller's theorem. We also use this four-vector theorem to analyze a plane light wave in a moving uniform medium, and find that the momentum and energy of Minkowski quasi-photon constitute a Lorentz four-vector and Planck constant is a Lorentz invariant. To resolve issue (ii), we have developed a generalized Lorentz \emph{scalar} theorem. We use this theorem to verify the "invariant conservation law" in relativistic electrodynamics, and unexpectedly find that it is also fundamentally wrong. Thus the two "conservation laws" in traditional textbooks, which have magically attracted several generations of most outstanding scientists, turned out to be imaginary, just like the emperor's new clothes; creating a scientific myth in the modern theoretical and mathematical physics: Believing is seeing.
General Formalism of the Quantum Equivalence Principle

Abstract:A consistent theory of quantum gravity will require a fully quantum formulation of the classical equivalence principle. Such a formulation has been recently proposed in terms of the equality of the rest, inertial and gravitational mass operators, and for non-relativistic particles in a weak gravitational field. In this work, we propose a generalization to a fully relativistic formalism of the quantum equivalence principle, valid for all background space-times, as well as for massive bosons and fermions. The principle is trivially satisfied for massless particles. We show that if the equivalence principle is broken at the quantum level, it implies the modification of the standard Lorentz transformations in flat space-time and a corresponding modification of the metric in curved space-time by the different mass ratios. In other words, the observed geometry would effectively depend on the properties of the test particle. Testable predictions of potential violations of the quantum equivalence principle are proposed.

Abstract:Besides two fundamental postulates, (i) the principle of relativity and (ii) the constancy of the speed of light in all inertial frames of reference, the special theory of relativity uses another assumption. This other assumption concerns the Euclidean structure of gravity-free space and the homogeneity of gravity-free time in the usual inertial coordinate system. Introducing the primed inertial coordinate system, in addition to the usual inertial coordinate system, for each inertial frame of reference, we assume the Euclidean structures of gravity-free space and time in the primed inertial coordinate system and their generalized Finslerian structures in the usual inertial coordinate system. We combine the alternative assumption with the two postulates (i) and (ii) to modify the special theory of relativity. The modified special relativity theory involves two versions of the light speed, infinite c′ in the primed inertial coordinate system and finite c in the usual inertial coordinate system. It also involves the c′-type Galilean transformation between any two primed inertial coordinate systems and the localized Lorentz transformation between two corresponding usual inertial coordinate systems. Since all our experimental data are collected and expressed in the usual inertial coordinate system, the physical principle is: the c′-type Galilean invariance in the primed inertial coordinate system plus the transformation from the primed inertial coordinate system to the usual inertial coordinate system. This principle is applied to a reformulation of mechanics, field theory and quantum field theory. Relativistic mechanics in the usual inertial coordinate system is unchanged, while field theory is developed and divergence-free. Any c′-type Galilean-invariant field system can be quantized by using the canonical quantization method in the primed inertial coordinate system. We establish a transformation law for quantized field systems as they are transformed from the primed to the usual inertial coordinate system. It is shown that the modified special relativity theory, together with quantum mechanics, leads to a convergent and invariant quantum field theory, in full agreement with experimental facts. The formulation of this quantum field theory does not demand departures from the concepts such as local Lorentz invariance in the usual inertial coordinate system, locality of interactions, and local or global gauge symmetries.

Abstract:We show how modern methods can be applied to quantum gravity at low energy. We test how quantum corrections challenge the classical framework behind the Equivalence Principle, for instance through introduction of non-locality from quantum physics, embodied in the Uncertainty Principle. When the energy is small we now have the tools to address this conflict explicitly. Despite the violation of some classical concepts, the EP continues to provide the core of the quantum gravity framework through the symmetry - general coordinate invariance - that is used to organize the effective field theory.

Abstract:In this paper, the local inertial coordinate system is calculated through coordinate transformations from laboratory coordinate system. We derived the same free falling equations as those in General Relativity. However, the definitions of second and higher order covariant derivatives are different. Our results are different from the classic view of the principle of equivalence, and suggest that all the laws of physics in gravitational field can be given by doing coordinate transformations from local inertial coordinate system to lab coordinate system.

Abstract:A high accuracy test of the weak equivalence principle (WEP) is of great scientific significance no matter whether its result is positive. We analyze the gravity gradient effect which is a main systematic error source in the test of WEP. The result shows that the uncompensated gravity gradient effect from the coupling term of the dominated gravity gradient multipole moment component q(21) and the relative multipole field component Q(21) contributes to an uncertainty of 1 x 10(-11) on the Eotvos parameter. We make a Q(21) compensation to reduce the effect by about 20 times, and the limit of the test precision due to this coupling is improved to a level of a part in 10(13).

Abstract:Adopting general frameworks for quantum-classical dynamics, we analyze the interaction between quantum matter and a classical gravitational field. We point out that, assuming conservation of momentum or energy, and assuming that the dynamics obeys Hamiltonian formalism or a particular decomposition property set out in the paper, the classical gravitational field cannot change the momentum or energy of the quantum system, whereas the quantum gravitational field can do so. Drawing upon the fundamental relationship between conservation laws and the quantum properties of objects, our analysis offers new perspectives for the study of quantum gravity and provides a novel interpretation of existing experimental observations, such as free fall.

Abstract: In general relativity, an idealized distant observer is situated at future null infinity where light rays emitted from the source approach. This article concerns conserved quantities such as mass, energy-momentum, angular momentum, and center of mass at future null infinity. The classical definitions of Bondi mass at future null infinity ascertains the mass radiated away in gravitational waves distinctively. However, the same question for other conserved quantities such as angular momentum has been a subtle issue since the discovery of "supertranslation ambiguity" in the 1960's. Recently, new definitions of angular momentum and center of mass were proposed and proved to be free of such ambiguity [12,14]. These new definitions arise as limits of the Chen-Wang-Yau quasilocal conserved quantities, which are based on the theory of optimal isometric embedding and quasilocal mass of Wang-Yau. Abstract:We define quasi-local conserved quantities in general relativity by using the optimal isometric embedding in Wang and Yau (Commun Math Phys 288(3):919–942, 2009 ) to transplant Killing fields in the Minkowski spacetime back to the 2-surface of interest in a physical spacetime. To each optimal isometric embedding, a dual element of the Lie algebra of the Lorentz group is assigned. Quasi-local angular momentum and quasi-local center of mass correspond to pairing this element with rotation Killing fields and boost Killing fields, respectively. They obey classical transformation laws under the action of the Poincaré group. We further justify these definitions by considering their limits as the total angular momentum and the total center of mass of an isolated system. These expressions were derived from the Hamilton–Jacobi analysis of the gravitational action and thus satisfy conservation laws. As a result, we obtained an invariant total angular momentum theorem in the Kerr spacetime. For a vacuum asymptotically flat initial data set of order 1, it is shown that the limits are always finite without any extra assumptions. We also study these total conserved quantities on a family of asymptotically flat initial data sets evolving by the vacuum Einstein evolution equation. It is shown that the total angular momentum is conserved under the evolution. For the total center of mass, the classical dynamical formula relating the center of mass, energy, and linear momentum is recovered, in the nonlinear context of initial data sets evolving by the vacuum Einstein evolution equation. The definition of quasi-local angular momentum provides an answer to the second problem in classical general relativity on Penrose’s list (Proc R Soc Lond Ser A 381(1780):53–63, 1982 ).
