Abstract:Many theoretical approaches to quantum gravity predict the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry at Planck energies. Kinematical cosmic-ray studies are a sensitive tool in the search for such effects. This talk discusses the construction of test dispersion relations for such analyses.

Abstract:Perturbative expansions of quantum field theories typically lead to ultraviolet (short-distance) divergences requiring regularization and renormalization. Many different regularization techniques have been developed over the years, but most regularizations require severe mutilation of the logical foundations of the theory. In contrast, breaking Lorentz invariance, while it is certainly a radical step, at least does not damage the logical foundations of the theory. I shall explore the features of a Lorentz symmetry breaking regulator in a simple polynomial scalar field theory and discuss its implications. In particular, I shall quantify just “how much” Lorentz symmetry breaking is required to fully regulate the quantum theory and render it finite. This scalar field theory provides a simple way of understanding many of the key features of Hořava’s recent article [Phys. Rev. D 79, 084008 (2009)PRVDAQ1550-799810.1103/PhysRevD.79.084008] on 3+1 dimensional quantum gravity.

Abstract:A certain non-Noetherian connection between symmetry and integrability properties of nonlinear field equations in conservation-law form is studied. It is shown that the symmetry condition alone may lead, in a rather straightforward way, to the construction of a Lax pair, a doubly infinite set of (generally nonlocal) conservation laws, and a recursion operator for symmetries. Applications include the chiral field equation and the self-dual Yang-Mills equation.

Non-local quantum field theory from doubly special relativity

Abstract:Non-local quantum field theories could be a solution to the inconsistencies arising when quantizing gravity. Doubly special relativity is regarded as a low-energy limit of a quantum gravity theory with testable predictions. We present a new formulation of quantum field theories in doubly special relativity with non-local behavior. Our construction restricts the models to those showing linear Lorentz invariance. The deformed Klein--Gordon, Dirac, and electromagnetic Lagrangians are derived. The deformed Maxwell equations and the electric potential of a point charge are discussed.

Abstract:It is shown that the method of nonlinear realization of local supersymmetry being applied to the n=(1,1) superconformal symmetry allows one reduce the new version of the super-Liouville equation to the ordinary one owing to the relaxation of the auxiliary equation of motion fixing the gauge parameters.

Abstract:A modified algorithm for the construction of nonlinear realizations (sigma models) is applied to the general covariance group. Our method features finite dimensionality of the coset manifold by letting the vacuum stability group be infinite. No decomposition of the symmetry group to its finite-dimensional subgroups is required. The expected result, i.e. Einstein-Cartan gravity, is finally obtained.

Abstract:A partially alternative derivation of the expression for the time dilation effect in a uniform static gravitational field is obtained by means of a thought experiment in which rates of clocks at rest at different heights are compared using as reference a clock bound to a free falling reference system (FFRS). Derivations along these lines have already been proposed, but generally introducing some shortcut in order to make the presentation elementary. The treatment is here exact: the clocks whose rates one wishes to compare are let to describe their world lines (Rindler's hyperbolae) with respect to the FFRS, and the result is obtained by comparing their lengths in space-time. The exercise may nonetheless prove pedagogically instructive insofar as it shows that the some results of General Relativity (GR) can be obtained in terms of physical and geometrical reasoning without having recourse to the general formalism. The corresponding GR metric is derived, to the purpose of making a comparison with solutions of Einstein field equation and with other metrics. For this reasons this paper also compels to deal with a few subtle points inherent in the very foundations of GR.

Abstract:This paper collects several results in the study of the explicit symmetry-breaking limit of the effective-field theory (EFT) description of diffeomorphism and local Lorentz-symmetry breaking, where we generalize a subset of the EFT framework (the ``minimal" sector). It is well known that no-go constraints may arise in cases of explicit symmetry-breaking in curved spacetime as a consequence of the Bianchi identities; we show in this work that certain terms in the action can be countenanced and used to cancel would-be no-go constraints, at least in the linearized gravity limit. Nonetheless, we go on to find more potential issues, and we show that one particular explicit breaking subset of the EFT, while evading direct no-go constraints, results in a discontinuity - unsuppressed additional polarizations for gravitational waves. In a general treatment of the explicit breaking EFT, but confined to linearized gravity, we explicitly show the existence of an extra degree of freedom, independent of coordinates. We find extra polarizations of gravitational waves in the solutions, with a scalar mode unsuppressed by any coefficient, which could render these cases ruled out by observations.

Abstract:We explore the physics of relativistic gapless phases defined by a mixed anomaly between two generalized conserved currents. The gapless modes can be understood as Goldstone modes arising from the nonlinear realization of (generically higher-form) symmetries arising from these currents. In some cases, the anomaly cannot be reproduced by any local and unitary theory, indicating that the corresponding symmetries are impossible, in the sense that they cannot appear in a Lorentzian physical system. We consider many examples of the general construction. Most notably, we study conformal gravity from this perspective, describing the higher-form symmetries of the linear theory and showing how it can be understood in terms of anomalies. Along the way we clarify some aspects of electric-magnetic duality in linear conformal gravity.

Abstract:Lorentz invariance belongs to the fundamental symmetries of nature. It is argued that a non‐vanishing nonmetricity of a metric‐affine geometry of spacetime heralds the violation of the Lorentz symmetry. Lorentz invariance belongs to the fundamental symmetries of nature. It is basic for the successful Standard Model of Particle Physics. Nevertheless, within the last decades, Lorentz invariance has been repeatedly questioned. In fact, there exist different research programs addressing this problem. It is argued that a most adequate understanding of a possible violation of Lorentz invariance is achieved in the framework of the gauge‐theoretic approach to gravity: a non‐vanishing nonmetricity of a metric‐affine geometry of spacetime heralds the violation of the Lorentz symmetry.

Abstract:Supersymmetry and Lorentz invariance are closely related as both are spacetime symmetries. Terms can be added to Lagrangians that explicitly break either supersymmetry or Lorentz invariance. It is possible to include terms which violate Lorentz invariance but maintain invariance under supersymmetric transformations. I illustrate this with some simple extensions of the original Wess-Zumino model.

Abstract:We derive the action and symmetries of the bosonic sector of non-Lorentzian IIB supergravity by taking the non-relativistic string limit. We find that the bosonic field content is extended by a Lagrange multiplier that implements a restriction on the Ramond-Ramond fluxes. We show that the SL(2,R) transformation rules of non-Lorentzian IIB supergravity form a novel, nonlinear polynomial realization. Using classical invariant theory of polynomial equations and binary forms, we will develop a general formalism describing the polynomial realization of SL(2,R) and apply it to the special case of non-Lorentzian IIB supergravity. Using the same formalism, we classify all the relevant SL(2,R) invariants. Invoking other bosonic symmetries, such as the local boost and dilatation symmetry, we show how the bosonic part of the non-Lorentzian IIB supergravity action is formed uniquely from these SL(2,R) invariants. This work also points towards the concept of a non-Lorentzian bootstrap, where bosonic symmetries in non-Lorentzian supergravity are used to bootstrap the bosonic dynamics in Lorentzian supergravity, without considering the fermions.

Abstract:We consider non-Lorentzian expansions, Galilean and Carrollian, of the Lorentz force equation in which both the particle position and the electro-magnetic field are expanded. There are two well-known limits in the case of a constant field, called electric and magnetic, that are studied separately. We show that the resulting equations of motion follow equivalently from considering a non-linear realisation of a certain infinite-dimensional algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we present and classify the supersymmetric extensions of extended kinematical algebras, at the basis of non-Lorentzian physics theories. The diverse kinematical superalgebras are here derived by applying non- and ultra-relativistic expansion procedures involving different semigroups. We then build three-dimensional Chern-Simons non-Lorentzian supergravity theories based on such (extended) kinematical superalgebras, providing the supersymmetry transformation laws of the fields and the field equations of the models, which correspond to the vanishing of the curvature two-forms. In fact, the expansion procedure adopted allows to automatically end up with a non-degenerate bilinear invariant trace for the (extended) kinematical superalgebras. The latter is a crucial ingredient of the Chern-Simons field-theoretical formulation, as it allows to include a kinetic term for each gauge field of the theory, implying the vanishing of the curvature two-forms as field equations.

Symmetries and Conservation Laws in Horava Gravity

Abstract:Horava gravity has been proposed as a renormalizable quantum gravity without the ghost problem through anisotropic scaling dimensions which break Lorentz symmetry in UV. In the Hamiltonian formalism, due to the Lorentz-violating terms, the constraint structure looks quite different from that of general relativity (GR) but we have recently found that "there exists the case where we can recover the same number of degrees of freedom as in GR", in a rather general set-up. In this paper, we study its Lagrangian perspectives and examine the full diffeomorphism (Diff) symmetry and its associated conservation laws in Horava gravity. Surprisingly, we find that the full Diff symmetry in the action can also be recovered when a certain condition, called "super-condition", which super-selects the Lorentz-symmetric sector in Horava gravity, is satisfied. This indicates that the broken Lorentz symmetry, known as "foliation-preserving" Diff, is just an "apparent" symmetry of the Horava gravity action and rather its "full action symmetry can be as large as the Diff in GR ". The super-condition exactly corresponds to the tertiary constraint in Hamiltonian formalism which is the second-class constraint and provides a non-trivial realization of the Lorentz symmetry otherwise being absent apparently. From the recovered Lorentz symmetry in the action, we obtain the conservation laws with the Noether currents as in covariant theories. The general formula for the conserved Noether charges reproduces the mass of four-dimensional static black holes with an "arbitrary" cosmological constant in Horava gravity, and is independent of ambiguities associated with the choice of asymptotic boundaries. We also discuss several challenging problems, including its implications to Hamiltonian formalism, black hole thermodynamics, radiations from colliding black holes.
