Abstract:Supersymmetry and Lorentz invariance are closely related as both are spacetime symmetries. Terms can be added to Lagrangians that explicitly break either supersymmetry or Lorentz invariance. It is possible to include terms which violate Lorentz invariance but maintain invariance under supersymmetric transformations. I illustrate this with some simple extensions of the original Wess-Zumino model.

Supersymmetry with Lorentz Symmetry Violation

Abstract:We study two (massless free field) models, a photon/photino model with a vector gauge field and a Majorana spinor field, and a Wess-Zumino model. They each exhibit Lorentz symmetry violation but retain, in an appropriate way, the supersymmetry correspondance between the particles of the two fields. In relation to the photon field the Lorentz symmetry violation is of a simple but non-trivial kind that implies birefringence. In relation to the spinor field the Lorentz violation is produced by a modification of the Majorana equation that is a simplified version of more general investigations of Lorentz symmetry violation of the Dirac equation. In the case of the Wess-Zumino model we retain the same violation of Lorentz symmetry for the Majorana field and adjust the propagation of the scalar particles so that they exhibit a corresponding birefringence. The advantages of the models are that they are straightforward to investigate completely and both retain the basic aspect of supersymmetry namely the one-to-one correspondance between bosons and fermions. As a result of this bottom-up approach it is then possible to construct conserved supersymmetry charges and investigate their algebraic properties. To some extent these are similar to those encountered in the case of Lorentz invariance. However there are differences and in particular non-local terms appear in the commutation relations of the supersymmetry charges and fields of the models. We examine carefully the rather intricate nature of the limit back to Lorentz invariance.

Abstract:Theory of Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics is extended by interactions with external vector and tensor backgrounds, that are assumed to be generated by some Lorentz-violating (LV) dynamics at an ultraviolet scale perhaps related to the Planck scale. Exact supersymmetry requires that such interactions correspond to LV operators of dimension five or higher, providing a solution to the naturalness problem in the LV sector. We classify all dimension five and six LV operators, analyze their properties at the quantum level and describe observational consequences of LV in this theory. We show that LV operators do not induce destabilizing D-terms, gauge anomaly and the Chern-Simons term for photons. We calculate the renormalization group evolution of dimension five LV operators and their mixing with dimension three LV operators, controlled by the scale of the soft-breaking masses. Dimension five LV operators are constrained by the low-energy precision measurements at 10^{-10}-10^{-5} level in units of the inverse Planck scale, while the Planck-scale suppressed dimension six LV operators are allowed by observational data.

Abstract:In a recent paper, the BRST formalism for the gauge-fixed N=2 twistor-string was used to calculate Green-Schwarz supersring scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of loops and external massless states. Although the gauge-fixing procedure preserved the worldsheet N=2 superconformal invariance of the twistor-string, it broke the target-space SO(9,1) super-Poincaré invariance down to an SU(4)xU(1) subgroup. In this paper, generators for the SO(9,1) super-Poincaré transformations, as well as manifestly covariant vertex operators, are explicitly constructed out of the gauge-fixed matter fields. The earlier calculated amplitudes are then expressed in manifestly Lorentz-covariant notation.

Abstract:We present a superfield Lax formalism of superspace sigma model based on the target space ${\cal G}/{\cal H}$ and show that a one-parameter family of flat superfield connections exists if the target space ${\cal G}/{\cal H}$ is a symmetric space. The formalism has been related to the existences of an infinite family of local and non-local superfield conserved quantities. Few examples have been given to illustrate the results.

Non-supersymmetric particles are embedded in constrained superfields governed by a nonlinear sigma model, and operators are collected into potentials on the target space. The use of chiral superfields standardizes the treatment of flavor across scalars and fermions, and the minimal jet bundle extension makes invariance under derivative field redefinitions manifest.

Abstract:Lorentz-violating operators involving Standard Model fields are tightly constrained by experimental data. However, bounds are more model-independent for Lorentz violation appearing in purely gravitational couplings. The spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance by the vacuum expectation value of a vector field selects a universal rest frame. This affects the propagation of the graviton, leading to a modification of Newton's law of gravity. We compute the size of the long-range preferred-frame effect in terms of the coefficients of the two-derivative operators in the low-energy effective theory that involves only the graviton and the Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:We describe a notion of “higher” Wess-Zumino-Witten-like action which is natural in the context of superstring field theories formulated in the large Hilbert space. For the open string, the action is characterized by a pair of commuting cyclic A∞ structures together with a hierarchy of higher-form potentials analogous to the Maurer-Cartan elements which appear in the conventional Wess-Zumino-Witten action. We apply this formalism to get a better understanding of symmetries of open superstring field theory and the structure of interactions in the Ramond sector, describing an interesting connection between Ramond vertices and Feynman diagrams.

Lorentz-like extension Mixing Higgs and Gauge Fields in a U(1) symmetric model

Abstract:A program searching for symmetry structures behind some features of the standard Model is launched. After addressing known no-go theorems, we construct a novel symmetry mixing gauge and Higgs fields which is a Lorentz symmetry extension involving gauge symmetries. We construct a field theory model with such a local symmetry, which is in turn invariant under local Lorentz transformations. We address the action of extended symmetries on the geometric frame, and models with extra dimensions. This features the novelty of diverse covariant derivatives associated to non--commuting differential operators, and their associated curvatures. Mass--like terms arise accompanying non--commuting differential operators. A novel formalism for constructing an invariant Lagrangian in direct correspondence to obtained casimir operators --embodying a long sought paradigm-- is developed. It recovers both gauge as well as some sort of Higgs-like potential. Equations of motion and conserved currents are found. Some exploration is devoted to possible invariant measures hinting possible approaches to address anomalies.

Non-Lorentzian Supergravity and Kinematical Superalgebras

Abstract:In this paper, we present and classify the supersymmetric extensions of extended kinematical algebras, at the basis of non-Lorentzian physics theories. The diverse kinematical superalgebras are here derived by applying non- and ultra-relativistic expansion procedures involving different semigroups. We then build three-dimensional Chern-Simons non-Lorentzian supergravity theories based on such (extended) kinematical superalgebras, providing the supersymmetry transformation laws of the fields and the field equations of the models, which correspond to the vanishing of the curvature two-forms. In fact, the expansion procedure adopted allows to automatically end up with a non-degenerate bilinear invariant trace for the (extended) kinematical superalgebras. The latter is a crucial ingredient of the Chern-Simons field-theoretical formulation, as it allows to include a kinetic term for each gauge field of the theory, implying the vanishing of the curvature two-forms as field equations.

Abstract:The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recently we performed complex Langevin simulations by adding a Lorentz invariant mass term as an IR regulator and found a (1+1)-dimensional expanding spacetime with a Lorentzian signature emerging dynamically at late times when the fermionic contribution is omitted. Here we find that this is merely an artifact of the Lorentz boosts by showing that the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry is eliminated if one chooses a Lorentz frame appropriately. On the other hand, when we include the fermionic contribution, we find some evidence suggesting the emergence of a smooth (3+1)-dimensional expanding Lorentzian spacetime.

Abstract:We study neutral Dirac particles confined to a family of $(1+2)$-dimensional wormholes arising from surfaces of revolution with a constant negative Gaussian curvature, in the framework of a comprehensive effective field theory allowing deviations from Lorentz symmetry: the gravitational standard-model extension (SME). The Dirac particles are described with a fixed background tensor field that rules the Lorentz symmetry violation in the CPT-even gauge sector of SME. We implement this geometrical approach by incorporating non-minimal couplings that possibly induce a Lorentz-symmetry violating term in the modified Dirac equation. We also analyze the exact analytical solutions of the corresponding modified Dirac equation in the presence of a peculiar external magnetic field.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate the Lorentz-breaking extension for the spin-3/2 field theory and couple it to the Abelian gauge field in a Lorentz violating (LV) manner. Next, we calculate the lower LV quantum corrections, that is, the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term, which, being superficially divergent, turns out to be finite but ambiguous, and also the higher-derivative CFJ term. Besides, we compute the aether term, being the lowest CPT-even LV term, involving the second order in the LV vector.

Abstract:I present a brief review on the motivation for the study on Lorentz violation and on some of our studies with phenomenological analysis of Lorentz violation effects. I also discuss three effective field theory frameworks for Lorentz violation: the Coleman-Glashow model, the standard model extension (SME), and the standard model supplement (SMS). The situation of the OPERA "anomaly" is also briefly reviewed, together with some discussion on the superluminality of neutrinos within the effective field theory frameworks.
Induced Lorentz Violation on a Moving Braneworld

Abstract:We consider a braneworld scenario in which a flat 4-D brane, embedded in $M^{3,1} \times S^1$, is moving on or spiraling around the $S^1$. Although the induced metric on the brane is 4-D Minkowski, the would-be Lorentz symmetry of the brane is broken globally by the compactification. As recently pointed out this means causal bulk signals can propagate superluminally and even backwards in time according to brane observers. Here we consider the effective action on the brane induced by loops of bulk fields. We consider a variety of self-energy and vertex corrections due to bulk scalars and gravitons and show that bulk loops with non-zero winding generate UV-finite Lorentz-violating terms in the 4-D effective action. The results can be accommodated by the Standard Model Extension, a general framework for Lorentz-violating effective field theory.

Abstract:We consider an effective theory for a shift-symmetric, quadratically-coupled, ultralight spin-0 field. The leading CP-conserving interactions with Standard Model fields in the effective theory arise at dimension 8. We discuss the renormalization group evolution and positivity bounds on these operators, as well as their possible UV origins. Assuming that the spin-0 field is associated with an ultralight dark matter candidate, we discuss the effects of the dimension-8 operators on experiments searching for the oscillation of fundamental constants and Lorentz violation. We find that the direct bounds on these two effects are of similar strength but rather weak, corresponding to a UV cutoff scale of keV order, as they are mediated by dimension-8 operators.

Abstract:The quantum kinetic equation for the gauge-invariant Wigner function, constructed from spinor fields that obey the Dirac equation modified by CPT and Lorentz symmetry-violating terms, is presented. The equations for the components of the Wigner function in the Clifford algebra basis are accomplished. Focusing on the massless case, an extended semiclassical chiral kinetic theory in the presence of external electromagnetic fields is developed. We calculate the chiral currents and establish the anomalous magnetic and separation effects in a Lorentz-violating background. The chiral anomaly within the context of extended quantum electrodynamics is elucidated.
