Abstract:Many theoretical approaches to quantum gravity predict the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry at Planck energies. Kinematical cosmic-ray studies are a sensitive tool in the search for such effects. This talk discusses the construction of test dispersion relations for such analyses.

Abstract:In recent years, the breakdown of spacetime symmetries has been identified as a promising research field in the context of Planck-scale phenomenology. For example, various theoretical approaches to the quantum-gravity problem are known to accommodate minute violations of CPT invariance. This talk covers various topics within this research area. In particular, some mechanisms for spacetime-symmetry breaking as well as the Standard-Model Extension (SME) test framework will be reviewed; the connection between CPT and Lorentz invariance in quantum field theory will be exposed; and various experimental CPT tests with emphasis on matter--antimatter comparisons will be discussed.

Abstract:In the last decade, a variety of high-precision experiments have searched for miniscule violations of Lorentz symmetry. These searches are largely motivated by the possibility of uncovering experimental signatures from a fundamental unified theory. Experimental results are reported in the framework called the Standard-Model Extension (SME), which describes general Lorentz violation for each particle species in terms of its coefficients for Lorentz violation. Recently, the role of gravitational experiments in probing the SME has been explored in the literature. In this talk, I will summarize theoretical and experimental aspects of these works. I will also discuss recent lunar laser ranging and atom interferometer experiments, which place stringent constraints on gravity coefficients for Lorentz violation.

Abstract:If quantum gravity violates Lorentz symmetry, the prospects for observational guidance in understanding quantum gravity improve considerably. This article briefly reviews previous work on Lorentz violation (LV) and discusses aspects of the effective field theory framework for parametrizing LV effects. Current observational constraints on LV are then summarized, focusing on effects in QED at order E/M_Planck.

Abstract:It was recently suggested that possible small volations of Lorentz invariance could explain the existence of UHECR beyond the GZK cutoff and the observations of multi-TeV gamma-rays from Mkn 501. Our analysis of Lorentz-violating kinematics shows that in addition to the modified threshold conditions solving cosmic ray puzzles we should expect a strong suppression of electromagnetic processes like bremsstrahlung and pair creation. This leads to drastic effects in electron-photon cascade development in the atmosphere and in detectors.

Abstract:We derive a modified dispersion relation (MDR) in the Lorentz violation extension of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) sector in the standard model extension (SME) framework. Based on the extended Dirac equation and corresponding MDR, we observe the resemblance of the Lorentz violation coupling to spin–gravity coupling. We also develop a neutrino oscillation mechanism induced by the presence of nondiagonal terms of Lorentz violation couplings in two-flavor space in a two-spinor formalism by explicitly assuming neutrinos to be Marjorana fermions. We also obtain a very stringent bound (∽ 10-25) on one of the Lorentz violation parameters by applying the MDR to the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray (UHECR) problem.

Abstract:PHENIX is one of the two large experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and archives roughly 100TB of experimental data per year. In addition, large volumes of simulated data are produced at multiple off-site computing centers. For any file catalog to play a central role in data management it has to face problems associated with the need for distributed access and updates. To be used effectively by the hundreds of PHENIX collaborators in 12 countries the catalog must satisfy the following requirements: 1) contain up-to-date data, 2) provide fast and reliable access to the data, 3) have write permissions for the sites that store portions of data. We present an analysis of several available Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) to support a catalog meeting the above requirements and discuss the PHENIX experience with building and using the distributed file catalog.

Low energy Lorentz violation from modified dispersion at high energies

Abstract:Many quantum theories of gravity propose Lorentz violating dispersion relations of the form $\omega = |k|\, f(|k|/M)$, with recovery of approximate Lorentz invariance at energy scales much below $M$. We show that a quantum field with this dispersion predicts drastic low energy Lorentz violation in atoms modelled as Unruh-DeWitt detectors, for any $f$ that dips below unity somewhere. As an example, we show that polymer quantization motivated by loop quantum gravity predicts such Lorentz violation below current ion collider rapidities.

Abstract:Lorentz-violating operators involving Standard Model fields are tightly constrained by experimental data. However, bounds are more model-independent for Lorentz violation appearing in purely gravitational couplings. The spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance by the vacuum expectation value of a vector field selects a universal rest frame. This affects the propagation of the graviton, leading to a modification of Newton's law of gravity. We compute the size of the long-range preferred-frame effect in terms of the coefficients of the two-derivative operators in the low-energy effective theory that involves only the graviton and the Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:The search for a theory that unifies general relativity and quantum theory has focused attention on models of physics at the Planck scale. One possible consequence of models such as string theory may be that Lorentz invariance is not an exact symmetry of nature. We discuss here some possible experimental and observational tests of Lorentz invariance involving neutrino physics and astrophysics.

Abstract:As a basic symmetry of space-time, Lorentz symmetry has played important roles in various fields of physics, and it is a glamorous question whether Lorentz symmetry breaks. Since Einstein proposed special relativity, Lorentz symmetry has withstood very strict tests, but there are still motivations for Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) research from both theoretical consideration and experimental feasibility, that attract physicists to work on LV theories, phenomena and experimental tests with enthusiasm. There are many theoretical models including LV effects, and different theoretical models predict different LV phenomena, from which we can verify or constrain LV effects. Here, we introduce three types of LV theories: quantum gravity theory, space-time structure theory and effective field theory with extra-terms. Limited by the energy of particles, the experimental tests of LV are very difficult; however, due to the high energy and long propagation distance, high-energy particles from astronomical sources can be used for LV phenomenological researches. Especially with cosmic photons, various astronomical observations provide rich data from which one can obtain various constraints for LV researches. Here, we review four common astronomical phenomena which are ideal for LV studies, together with current constraints on LV effects of photons.
Geometric phase assisted detection of Lorentz-invariance violation from modified dispersion at high energies

Abstract:Many theories of quantum gravity propose Lorentz-violating dispersion relations of the form $\omega_{|\mathbf{k}|}=|\mathbf{k}|f(|\mathbf{k}|/M_\star)$, which approximately recover to the Lorentz invariance, $\omega_{|\mathbf{k}|}\approx|\mathbf{k}|$, at the energy scales much below $M_\star$. However, usually such a scale is assumed to be near the Planck scale, thus the feature of the Lorentz-violating theory is weak and its experimental test becomes extremely challenging. Since the geometric phase (GP) is of accumulative and sensitive nature to weak effects, here we explore the GP acquired by an inertial atomic detector that is coupled to a quantum field with this kind of Lorentz-violating dispersion. We show that for the Lorentz-violating field theory case the GP depends on the velocity of the detector, which is quite different from the Lorentz symmetry case where the GP is independent of the detector's velocity. In particular, we show that the GP may present a drastic low-energy Lorentz violation for any $f$ that dips below unity somewhere. We apply our analysis to detecting the polymer quantization motivated by loop quantum gravity, and show the detector acquires an experimentally detectable GP with the assist of detector's velocity that below current ion collider rapidities. Furthermore, the accumulative nature of GP might facilitate the relevant detection significantly.

Lorentz violation alleviates gravitationally induced entanglement degradation

Abstract:Lorentz violation is a significant phenomenon in the framework of quantum physics, with implications for fundamental symmetries. In this paper, we explore the effects of Lorentz violation on quantum entanglement through a black hole spacetime that is coupled with a Lorentz-violating field. We establish the relationship between the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state and the Boulware number states for this case, and employ the near horizon approximation in an appropriate form to rewrite the black hole metric into a Rindler-like form. Subsequently, using this revised metric, the analytical forms of logarithmic negativity and mutual information are derived and plotted as functions of Rob's distance from the $ r=0 $ point. Based on the results, we find that the coupling between spacetime and the Lorentz-violating vector field alleviates gravity-induced entanglement degradation. At high mode frequencies, the effects of Lorentz violation are negligible, but they become significant at low frequencies. This suggests that investigating Lorentz violation at astrophysical scales requires low-frequency detectors, as the low energy of these fields enhances the significance of the Lorentz-violating field's non-zero vacuum expectation value.

Abstract:Perturbative expansions of quantum field theories typically lead to ultraviolet (short-distance) divergences requiring regularization and renormalization. Many different regularization techniques have been developed over the years, but most regularizations require severe mutilation of the logical foundations of the theory. In contrast, breaking Lorentz invariance, while it is certainly a radical step, at least does not damage the logical foundations of the theory. I shall explore the features of a Lorentz symmetry breaking regulator in a simple polynomial scalar field theory and discuss its implications. In particular, I shall quantify just “how much” Lorentz symmetry breaking is required to fully regulate the quantum theory and render it finite. This scalar field theory provides a simple way of understanding many of the key features of Hořava’s recent article [Phys. Rev. D 79, 084008 (2009)PRVDAQ1550-799810.1103/PhysRevD.79.084008] on 3+1 dimensional quantum gravity.

Abstract:This paper specifically focuses on the choice of a temporal background field over a spatial one in the context of Lorentz symmetry breaking. By examining the implications of this choice, we aim to understand the effects of Lorentz violation in different scenarios, with an emphasis on the consequences of adopting a purely temporal background field. In the analysis of $\gamma$-pair production, a brief approach in QED is presented, exploring the production of a pair of photons. Furthermore, the study investigates Lorentz violation with vectorial nonminimal coupling, analyzing the modifications introduced by this coupling in the scattering amplitude at the vertex. Additionally, Lorentz violation with axial-like nonminimal coupling is explored, with a particular focus. The additional coupling introduces further modifications to the scattering amplitude, highlighting the intricate nature of Lorentz symmetry breaking in different scenarios.

Gravitational and electromagnetic Cherenkov radiation constraints in modified dispersion relations

Abstract:Motivated by different approaches to quantum gravity, one could consider that Lorentz invariance is not an exact symmetry of nature at all energy scales. Following this spirit, modified dispersion relations have been used to encapsulate quantum gravity phenomenology. In the present work, we propose a class of Lorentz invariance violating phenomenological dispersion relations, which could be different for each particle species, to study the generalized vacuum Cherenkov radiation process. We identify the kinematic regions where the process is allowed and then compute the energy loss rate due to the emission of vacuum electromagnetic and gravitational Cherenkov radiation. Furthermore, we estimate constraints for the Lorentz invariance breaking parameters of protons and gravitons taking into account the existence (or absence) of vacuum gravitational Cherenkov radiation using ultra high energy cosmic ray detections.

Gravitational waves effects in a Lorentz-violating scenario

Abstract:This paper focuses on how the production and polarization of gravitational waves are affected by spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking, which is driven by a self-interacting vector field. Specifically, we examine the impact of a smooth quadratic potential and a non-minimal coupling, discussing the constraints and causality features of the linearized Einstein equation. To analyze the polarization states of a plane wave, we consider a fixed vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the vector field. Remarkably, we verify that a space-like background vector field modifies the polarization plane and introduces a longitudinal degree of freedom. In order to investigate the Lorentz violation effect on the quadrupole formula, we use the modified Green function. Finally, we show that the space-like component of the background field leads to a third-order time derivative of the quadrupole moment, and the bounds for the Lorentz-breaking coefficients are estimated as well.

New Limits on the Lorentz/CPT Symmetry Through 50 Gravitational-wave Events

Abstract:Lorentz invariance plays a fundamental role in modern physics. However, tiny violations of the Lorentz invariance may arise in some candidate quantum gravity theories. Prominent signatures of the gravitational Lorentz invariance violation (gLIV) include anisotropy, dispersion, and birefringence in the dispersion relation of gravitational waves (GWs). Using a total of 50 GW events in the GW transient catalogs GWTC-1 and GWTC-2, we perform an analysis on the anisotropic birefringence phenomenon. The use of multiple events allows us to completely break the degeneracy among gLIV coefficients and globally constrain the coefficient space. Compared to previous results at mass dimensions 5 and 6 for the Lorentz-violating operators, we tighten the global limits of 34 coefficients by factors ranging from 2 to 7.

Abstract:Lorentz invariance is one of the foundations of modern physics; however, Lorentz violation may happen from the perspective of quantum gravity, and plenty of studies on Lorentz violation have arisen in recent years. As a good tool to explore Lorentz violation, Finsler geometry is a natural and fundamental generalization of Riemann geometry. The Finsler structure depends on both coordinates and velocities. Here, we simply introduce the mathematics of Finsler geometry. We review the connection between modified dispersion relations and Finsler geometries and discuss the physical influence from Finsler geometry. We review the connection between Finsler geometries and theories of Lorentz violation, such as the doubly special relativity, the standard-model extension, and the very special relativity.

Abstract:We consider effective model where photons interact with scalar field corresponding to conformal excitations of the internal space (geometrical moduli/gravexcitons). We demonstrate that this interaction results in a modified dispersion relation for photons, and consequently, the photon group velocity depends on the energy implying the propagation time delay effect. We suggest to use the experimental bounds of the time delay of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) photons propagation as an additional constrain for the gravexciton parameters.
