Abstract:The experimental results from the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) show that a nearly perfect fluid (i.e.strong-coupling Quark Gluon Plasma) has been created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.I introduce our theoretical results based on a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model.Several important topics such as collective flow,jet quenching,chiral magnetic effect,are addressed.The simulation results indicate that the initial fluctuations of energy density of the QGP lead to all orders of harmonic flows of final particles via parton cascade,the strong interactions between jet and the QGP make jet lose much energy,and the final state interactions play an important role to affect the initial chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:A transport model is developed to describe hadron emission from a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The quark-gluon plasma is controlled by ideal hydrodynamics, and the hadron motion is characterized by a transport equation with loss and gain terms. The two sets of equations are coupled to each other, and the hadronization hypersurface is determined by both the hydrodynamic evolution and the hadron emission. The model is applied to calculate the transverse momentum distributions of mesons and baryons, and most of the results agree well with the experimental data at RHIC.

Abstract:We study gradient corrections to the transport equation for energetic light partons in dense QCD environments. In the diffusion limit, the transport dynamics is solely controlled by small-angle elastic scatterings, leading to transverse momentum broadening with respect to the parton's initial direction. Such a parton propagation is usually considered in the limit of transversely homogeneous matter. The transport processes admit a classical description and the transverse spatial dependence of the medium properties emerges only through the jet quenching parameter. In this work, we show that a gradient expansion of the all-order evolution equation for the partonic Wigner function leads to an evolution equation in the Boltzmann-diffusion form only up to the leading order in transverse gradients. At the second order in gradients, the quantum corrections associated with nonlocal interactions give rise to a novel transport that can be implemented in Monte Carlo simulations. Exploring theoretical uncertainties in the hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:We explore theoretical uncertainties in the hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions by examining the full non-linear causality conditions and quantifying the second-order transport coefficients' role on flow observables. The causality conditions impose physical constraints on the maximum allowed values of inverse Reynolds numbers during the hydrodynamic evolution. Including additional second-order gradient terms in the Denicol-Niemi-Molnár-Rischke (DNMR) theory significantly shrinks the casual regions compared to those in the Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics. For Au+Au collisions, we find the variations of flow observables are small with and without imposing the necessary causality conditions, suggesting a robust extraction of the Quark-Gluon Plasma's transport coefficients in previous model-to-data comparisons. However, sizable sensitivity is present in small p+Au collisions, which poses challenges to study the small systems' collectivity.

Abstract:In this review article, we first briefly introduce the transport theory and quantum molecular dynamics model applied in the study of the heavy ion collisions from low to intermediate energies. The developments of improved quantum molecular dynamics model (ImQMD) and ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics model (UrQMD), are reviewed. The reaction mechanism and phenomena related to the fusion, multinucleon transfer, fragmentation, collective flow and particle production are reviewed and discussed within the framework of the two models. The constraints on the isospin asymmetric nuclear equation of state and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections by comparing the heavy ion collision data with transport models calculations in last decades are also discussed, and the uncertainties of these constraints are analyzed as well. Finally, we discuss the future direction of the development of the transport models for improving the understanding of the reaction mechanism, the descriptions of various observables, the constraint on the nuclear equation of state, as well as for the constraint on in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections.

Abstract:Diffusion Model for Relativistic Heavy‐Ion Collisions Relativistic heavy‐ion collisions are a versatile tool to study the partial approach of a quantum many‐body system towards statistical equilibrium. In article number 2300307, Johannes Hölck and Georg Wolschin present an explicit and rigorous derivation of the stochastic Fokker–Planck equation for the momentum distribution function of produced charged hadrons in longitudinal and transverse rapidities, thus placing the relativistic diffusion model on a firm statistical foundation. The model is used to analyse Pb–Pb collisions at energies reached at the Large Hadron Collider LHC. Detailed comparisons with data from the ATLAS and ALICE collaborations in transverse‐momentum and pseudorapidity space are given.

Abstract:Several transport models have been employed in recent years to analyze heavy-flavor meson spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Heavy-quark transport coefficients extracted from these models with their default parameters vary, however, by up to a factor of five at high momenta. To investigate the origin of this large theoretical uncertainty, a systematic comparison of heavy-quark transport coefficients is carried out between various transport models. Within a common scheme devised for the nuclear modification factor of charm quarks in a brick medium of a quark-gluon plasma, the systematic uncertainty of the extracted transport coefficients among these models is shown to be reduced to a factor of two, which can be viewed as the smallest intrinsic systematical error band achievable at present time. This indicates the importance of a realistic hydrodynamic evolution constrained by bulk hadron spectra and of heavy-quark hadronization for understanding the final heavy-flavor hadron spectra and extracting heavy-quark transport coefficients. Additional constraints on transport models such as energy loss fluctuation and transverse-momentum broadening can further reduce theoretical uncertainties in the extracted transport coefficients.

Revisit of directed flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from a multiphase transport model

Abstract:We have revisited several interesting questions on how the rapidity-odd directed flow is developed in relativistic $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 and 39 GeV based on a multiphase transport model. As the partonic phase evolves with time, the slope of the parton directed flow at midrapidity region changes from negative to positive as a result of the later dynamics at 200 GeV, while it remains negative at 39 GeV due to the shorter life time of the partonic phase. The directed flow splitting for various quark species due to their different initial eccentricities is observed at 39 GeV, while the splitting is very small at 200 GeV. From a dynamical coalescence algorithm with Wigner functions, we found that the directed flow of hadrons is a result of competition between the coalescence in momentum and coordinate space as well as further modifications by the hadronic rescatterings.

Abstract:We establish a linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model coupled to hydrodynamical background to study hard parton evolution in heavy-ion collisions. Both elastic and inelastic scatterings are included in our calculations; and heavy and light flavor partons are treated on the same footing. Within this LBT model, we provide good descriptions of heavy and light hadron suppression and anisotropic flow in heavy-ion collisions. Angular correlation functions between heavy and light flavor hadrons are studied for the first time and shown able to quantify not only the amount of heavy quark energy loss, but also how the parton energy is re-distributed in parton showers.

Abstract:The quark gluon plasma (QGP) is one of the most interesting forms of matter providing us with insight on quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and the early universe. It is believed that the heavy-ion collision experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have created the QGP medium by colliding two heavy nuclei at nearly the speed of light. Since the collision happens really fast, we can not observe the QGP directly. Instead, we look at the hundreds or even thousands of final hadrons coming out of the collision. In particular, jet and heavy flavor observables are excellent probes of the transport properties of such a medium. On the theoretical side, computational models are essential to make the connections between the final observables and the plasma. Previously studies have employed a comprehensive multistage modeling approach of both the probes and the medium. In this dissertation, heavy quarks are investigated as probes pf the QGP. First, the framework that describes the evolution of both soft and hard particles during the collision is discussed, which includes initial condition, hydrodynamical expansion, parton transport, hadronization, and hadronic rescattering. It has recently been organized into the Jet Energy-loss Tomography with a Statistically and Computationally Advanced Program Envelope (JETSCAPE) framework, which allows people to study heavy-ion collision in a more systematic manner. To study the energy loss of hard partons inside the QGP medium, the linear Boltzmann transport model (LBT) and in medium DGLAP evolution (implemented in the MATTER model) are combined and have achieved a simultaneous description of both charged hadron, D meson, and inclusive jet observables. To further extract the transport coefficients, a Bayesian analysis is conducted which constrains the parameters in the transport models.

Abstract:Abstract We develop a new heavy quark transport model, QLBT, to simulate the dynamical propagation of heavy quarks inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our QLBT model is based on the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model with the ideal QGP replaced by a collection of quasi-particles to account for the non-perturbative interactions among quarks and gluons of the hot QGP. The thermal masses of quasi-particles are fitted to the equation of state from lattice QCD simulations using the Bayesian statistical analysis method. Combining QLBT with our advanced hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization approach, we calculate the nuclear modification factor $$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ R AA and the elliptic flow $$v_2$$ v 2 of D mesons at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. By comparing our QLBT calculation to the experimental data on the D meson $$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ R AA and $$v_2$$ v 2 , we extract the heavy quark transport parameter $$\hat{q}$$ q ^ and diffusion coefficient $$D_\mathrm {s}$$ D s in the temperature range of $$1-4~T_\mathrm {c}$$ 1 - 4 T c , and compare them with the lattice QCD results and other phenomenological studies.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of energy loss and flow of heavy quarks produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the framework of a Langevin equation coupled to a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model that simulates the space-time evolution of the produced hot and dense QCD matter. The classical Langevin approach is improved such that, apart from quasi-elastic scatterings, radiative energy loss is incorporated by treating gluon radiation as an additional force term. The hadronization of emitted heavy quarks is simulated via a hybrid fragmentation plus recombination model. Our calculation shows significant contribution from gluon radiation to heavy quark energy loss at high energies, and we find the recombination mechanism is important for heavy flavor meson production at intermediate energies. We present numerical results for the nuclear modification and elliptic flow of D mesons, which are consistent with measurements at both LHC and RHIC; predictions for B mesons are also provided.

Abstract:Using the string melting version of a multiphase transport model, we focus on the evolution of thermodynamic properties of the central cell of parton matter produced in Au+Au collisions ranging from 200 GeV down to 2.7 GeV. The temperature and chemical potentials have been calculated based on both Boltzmann and quantum statistics in order to locate their evolution trajectories in the QCD phase diagram. We demonstrate that the trajectories can depend on many physical factors, especially the finite nuclear thickness at lower energies. However, from the evolution of pressure anisotropy, only partial thermalization can be achieved when the partonic systems reach the predicted QCD phase boundary. It provides some helpful insights to studying the QCD phase structure through relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Transport approaches for the Description of Intermediate-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:The transport approach is a useful tool to study dynamics of non-equilibrium systems. For heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies, where both the smooth nucleon potential and the hard-core nucleon-nucleon collision are important, the dynamics are properly described by two families of transport models, i.e., the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck approach and the quantum molecular dynamics approach. These transport models have been extensively used to extract valuable information of the nuclear equation of state, the nuclear symmetry energy, and microscopic nuclear interactions from intermediate-energy heavy-ion collision experiments. On the other hand, there do exist deviations on the predications and conclusions from different transport models. Efforts on the transport code evaluation project are devoted in order to understand the model dependence of transport simulations and well control the main ingredients, such as the initialization, the mean-field potential, the nucleon-nucleon collision, etc. A new era of accurately extracting nuclear interactions from transport model studies is foreseen.

Abstract:Quantum transport theory and disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model are investigated. The kinetic equations are derived in covariant and equal-time formulations. It is found that DCC is closely connected with the fluctuation of quark spin density. For the longitudinally expanding system, which models a highenergy nucleus-nucleus collision, a DCC present initially is quickly dissolved due to the expansion and the collision processes. However, the quantum off-shell effect leads to a strong fluctuation of DCC.
