Abstract:Equivalence principles played a central role in the development of general relativity. Furthermore, they have provided operative procedures for testing the validity of general relativity, or constraining competing theories of gravitation. This has led to a flourishing of different, and inequivalent, formulations of these principles, with the undesired consequence that often the same name, "equivalence principle", is associated with statements having a quite different physical meaning. In this paper we provide a precise formulation of the several incarnations of the equivalence principle, clarifying their uses and reciprocal relations. We also discuss their possible role as selecting principles in the design and classification of viable theories of gravitation.
General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the relationships between different formulations of the equivalence principle and its role in general relativity. Specifically, the paper aims to clarify the definitions, uses, and inter - relationships of different versions of the equivalence principle (such as the weak equivalence principle, Einstein's equivalence principle, strong equivalence principle, etc.), and explore how these principles act as selection principles and play a role in designing and classifying viable gravitational theories. ### Background and Motivation of the Paper 1. **Educational Significance**: - Almost every textbook on general relativity discusses the equivalence principle, but the formulations of the equivalence principle in different textbooks vary. This makes it difficult for students to understand the specific meanings of each formulation and their physical and mathematical structures. - The goal of the paper is to clarify these issues so that students can understand different versions of the equivalence principle more clearly. 2. **Theoretical Classification**: - With the emergence of more and more alternative gravitational theories, a simple method is needed to classify these theories, not only based on their mathematical structures, but also based on their general descriptions of the behavior of physical systems, thus providing possible connections with experiments. - The equivalence principle has been used in the past half - century to test the validity of general relativity or constrain competing gravitational theories. Therefore, clarifying different versions of the equivalence principle is crucial for classifying these theories. ### Main Content 1. **Levels of the Equivalence Principle**: - The paper first introduces the hierarchical structure from the simplest Newtonian equivalence principle to the most complex strong equivalence principle. - Newtonian Equivalence Principle (NEP): In the Newtonian limit, the inertial and gravitational masses of an object are equal. - Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP): In a gravitational field, the behavior of test particles ignoring self - gravity is independent of their properties. - Gravitational Weak Equivalence Principle (GWEP): In a gravitational field in vacuum, the behavior of test particles is independent of their properties. - Einstein's Equivalence Principle (EEP): Locally and at any point in spacetime, basic non - gravitational test physics is not affected by the gravitational field. - Strong Equivalence Principle (SEP): Locally, all tested basic physics (including gravitational physics) is not affected by the gravitational field. 2. **Logical Relationships**: - The paper discusses the logical relationships between these principles, for example, WEP implies NEP, EEP implies WEP, and SEP implies GWEP and EEP. 3. **Role in Theoretical Construction**: - WEP suggests that the gravitational field can be described by an affine connection on spacetime (i.e., the parallel transport rule). - EEP further requires that the spacetime structure must be Minkowskian locally, which means that the gravitational field can be described by a metric. - EEP not only selects metric theories but also provides a powerful prescription for coupling gravity and other basic physical phenomena in curved spacetime. ### Conclusion By analyzing different versions of the equivalence principle in detail, the paper clarifies their definitions and inter - relationships and explores the important roles of these principles in constructing and classifying gravitational theories. This is of great significance for both education and theoretical research.
