Abstract:Using Erik H. Erikson's book Young Man Luther and Donald Capps's "Young Man Luther: A Classic Revisited," the author reflects on his relationships with two of his professors at Princeton Theological Seminary, Donald Capps and Robert C. Dykstra. The author discusses the relationship between Martin Luther and John Staupitz and reflects on its significance for the formation and care of religious individuals. He encourages ministers and pastoral theologians to embrace a theology of personal involvement that goes beyond pedagogical effectiveness and pastoral wisdom.

Abstract:The Landau-Nordita conference that was held in Moscow in 1981 was the first place where I met Lars. This "marvellous meeting", as Lars quoted in one of his reminiscence article, was organised by Alan Luther. It was an event that generated a long-lasting friendship of scientists from East and West, provided a background for the future collaborations and, in particular, my own collaboration with Lars on a supersymmetric high-spin extension of the Poincaré group.

Abstract:Widely read in many areas, Professor David Bloor is arguably the pre-eminent authority in the field of STS (Science, Technology and Society). Since his influential book, Knowledge and Social Imagery , was published in 1976, the Strong Programme and its four tenets have become widely known. Professor Bloor was a member of the so-called Edinburgh School who proposed that scientific knowledge could not, and should not, be exempted from sociological analysis. Inspired by Wittgenstein’s philosophy, Professor Bloor and his colleagues introduced the concept of finitism to further explain why all knowledge claims are constructed in a specific social frame, to which sociologists have a lot to contribute. Noting the special intellectual position of finitism, this interview started from this topic. We then moved onto the achievements of the Strong Programme in the past 30 years. Professor Bloor also explained his recent work and the way STS beginners discover meaningful case studies. We ended this interview by asking his suggestions toward the burgeoning STS field in East Asia. This interview with Professor Bloor is a step toward a deeper understanding of the Edinburgh School.

Abstract:After initially meeting with fierce resistance, "branes", p-dimensional extended objects which go beyond particles (p=0) and strings (p=1), now occupy centre stage in theoretical physics as microscopic components of M-theory, as the seeds of the AdS/CFT correspondence, as a branch of particle phenomenology, as the higher-dimensional progenitors of black holes and, via the "brane-world", as entire universes in their own right. Notwithstanding this early opposition, Nino Zichichi invited me to to talk about supermembranes and eleven dimensions at the 1987 School on Subnuclear Physics and has continued to keep Erice on the brane ever since. Here I provide a distillation of my Erice brane lectures and some personal recollections.

Abstract:In this wide-ranging interview concerning the current state of,and likely future directions for,research on narrative and narrative theory,Herman contextualizes his use of the term postclassical narratology and discusses the relationship among the many strands of narrative inquiry that now build on yet also rethink the conceptual underpinnings of structuralist approaches.He also provides an account of the idea of "storyworlds" and how a focus on such narrative worlds cuts across the different subdomains of contemporary narrative theory.Finally,Herman comments on some of the most newly emergent trends in the field,and gives a preview of a volume on Teaching Narrative Theory that he has co-edited with Brian McHale and James Phelan.

Abstract:Professor Kramel’s impact on China’s contemporary architectural academia is present in multiple regards and on various levels. The paper uses the theme of “tectonic” to explain the process of establishing the academic confidence of tectonic culture: Kramel’s successful teaching system combining construction centered with tectonic thought of ETH-Z in 1990’s offered the author, who had been comprehended already Chinese traditional “yingzao”（Baokunst）, deep experience and the academic confidence to connect “yingzao” with the International modern architectural system. It is logical, as a result, to introduce Professor Kenneth Frampton’s Studies of Tectonic Culture to China to further this academic project in china.

Abstract:David Blockley was born in Derbyshire, England, in 1941. He graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1964 and gained his PhD there in 1967. For two years, David worked as a Development Engineer with the British Constructional Steelwork Association in London. In 1969, he began a career at the University of Bristol. He was promoted to a readership in 1982 and a personal Chair in 1989. In the same year he was appointed as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, a position he held until 1994, when he was elected Dean of Engineering, a position he held until 1998. He was again Head of Civil Engineering from 2002 until his retirement in 2006. By his retirement, David had supervised roughly 30 PhD students. He was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Royal Society of Arts, and received a DSc in honour of his achievements. He was the President of the Institution of Structural Engineers during 2001–2002. He was a Non-Executive Director of Bristol Water plc from 1998 to 2007. David authored over 180 papers and ten books, and won several technical awards for his work, including The Telford Gold Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Karen, and their two children, Andrew and Alison.

Abstract:In 1994, I came to Berkeley and was fortunate to stay there three years, first as a postdoctoral researcher and then as Neyman Visiting Assistant Professor. For me, this period was a unique opportunity to see other aspects and learn many more things about statistics: the Department of Statistics at Berkeley was much bigger and hence broader than my home at ETH Z\"urich and I enjoyed very much that the science was perhaps a bit more speculative. As soon as I settled in the department, I tried to get in touch with the local faculty. Leo Breiman started a reading group on topics in machine learning and I didn't hesitate to participate together with other Ph.D. students. Leo spread a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, telling us about the vast opportunity we now had by taking advantage of computational power. Hearing his views and opinions and listening to his thoughts and ideas has been very exciting, stimulating and entertaining as well. This was my first occasion to get to know Leo. And there was, at least a bit, a vice-versa implication: now, Leo knew my name and who I am. Whenever we saw each other on the 4th floor in Evans Hall, I got a very gentle smile and "hello" from Leo. And in fact, this happened quite often: I often walked around while thinking about a problem, and it seemed to me, that Leo had a similar habit.

Abstract:This is the fourth in a series of papers that provides an historical record in this journal of contributions made by the most influential figures in the field of stuttering. Ann Packman is an Australian researcher who will retire shortly. This paper reflects on her long and productive career, and her contributions to the field. With a background in literature, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and the brain and language, she became well equipped to contribute to understanding stuttering causality. That work, and an accompanying collection of basic and applied clinical research, was constantly grounded with the thoughts and feelings of those who stutter in the community.

Abstract:In this article, I illustrate lived experiences within my roles as caregiver, clinical social worker, and researcher. Empirical attention has focused on the emotional toll of caregiving and management of emotions as clinical social workers, however, little attention has been given to the impact emotions have on the researcher and how emotional awareness can be useful in the creation of knowledge. Using a personal reflexive account, I “out” myself as an emotionally aware caregiver, clinical social worker, and researcher. Finally, I provide examples of how to incorporate emotion into the research process.

Abstract:Henry P. Stapp has for 60 years been a leader—perhaps the leader—in exploring the role of mind/psyche/consciousness/experience in the ontology of quantum mechanics. Henry's contention is that the very structure of quantum mechanics implies a central and irreducible role for mind: an experiential aspect of nature distinct from that of the physical matter and energy described by the dynamical equations of physics. The task then becomes to generate trans-disciplinary interest in exploring this thesis, and in particular to seek connections with neuroscience and with empirical psychology.

Discourse Processes

Abstract:This special issue in Discourse Processes is in honor of the late Walter Kintsch. The interdisciplinary scope of his research had a tremendous impact across multiple fields, including discourse processes, psycholinguistics, cognitive science, and education, being cited tens of thousands of times. To honor his influence on the field and the numerous scientists who had been guided by his mentorship, this special issue includes 18 commentaries from his colleagues, former postdocs, and graduate students representing multiple generations of scholars. The contributing authors describe the impact of his work on the field of discourse processes from their academic perspectives and fields of study, and also share personal accounts of how Walter impacted their lives and careers. These commentaries are loosely organized in three partially overlapping themes related to how Walter's work influenced the fields of discourse processing and cognitive science, extensions beyond text comprehension, and real-world applications.
