Abstract:This work reviews the classical Darboux theorem for symplectic, presymplectic, and cosymplectic manifolds (which are used to describe regular and singular mechanical systems), and certain cases of multisymplectic manifolds, and extends it in new ways to k-symplectic and k-cosymplectic manifolds (all these structures appear in the geometric formulation of first-order classical field theories). Moreover, we discuss the existence of Darboux theorems for classes of precosymplectic, k-presymplectic, k-precosymplectic, and premultisymplectic manifolds, which are the geometrical structures underlying some kinds of singular field theories. Approaches to Darboux theorems based on flat connections associated with geometric structures are given, while new results on polarisations for (k-)(pre)(co)symplectic structures arise.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to investigate Darboux rectifying curves on a smooth surface immersed in the Euclidean space. First, we discuss the component of the position vector of a Darboux rectifying curve on a smooth immersed surface under the isometry of surfaces. Next we find a sufficient condition for the conformal invariance of Darboux rectifying curve.

Abstract:The Darlington synthesis problem (in the scalar case) is the problem of embedding a given contractive analytic function to an inner $2\times 2$ matrix function as the entry. A fundamental result of Arov--Douglas--Helton relates this algebraic property to a pure analytic one known as a pseudocontinuation of bounded type. We suggest a local version of the Darlington synthesis problem and prove a local analog of the ADH theorem.

The generalized Darboux matrices with the same poles and their applications

Abstract:Darboux transformation plays a key role in constructing explicit closed-form solutions of completely integrable systems. This paper provides an algebraic construction of generalized Darboux matrices with the same poles for the $2\times2$ Lax pair, in which the coefficient matrices are polynomials of spectral parameter. The first-order monic Darboux matrix is constructed explicitly and its classification theorem is presented. Then by using the solutions of the corresponding adjoint Lax pair, the $n$-order monic Darboux matrix and its inverse, both sharing the same unique pole, are derived explicitly. Further, a theorem is proposed to describe the invariance of Darboux matrix regarding pole distributions in Darboux matrix and its inverse. Finally, a unified theorem is offered to construct formal Darboux transformation in general form. All Darboux matrices expressible as the product of $n$ first-order monic Darboux matrices can be constructed in this way. The nonlocal focusing NLS equation, the focusing NLS equation and the Kaup-Boussinesq equation are taken as examples to illustrate the application of these Darboux transformations.

Abstract:The Mordell conjecture: origins, approaches, generalizations -- The Mordell conjecture predicts that a diophantine equation defining a smooth projective curve of genus at least two has only finity many solutions in a given number field. The century that ran since its statement, in 1922, gave rise to several approaches, several proofs, and vast extensions most of which are still conjectural. This text is based on the oral presentation and aims at recalling this story. La conjecture de Mordell prédit qu'une équation diophantienne définissant une courbe projective lisse de genre au moins deux n'a qu'un nombre fini de solutions dans un corps de nombres donné. Le siècle qui s'est écoulé depuis son énoncé, en 1922, a vu plusieurs approches, plusieurs démonstrations, ainsi que de vastes extensions dont la plupart sont encore conjecturales. Ce texte, qui reprend l'exposé oral, s'efforce de retracer cette histoire.

Abstract:During the whole of 1874, Camille Jordan and Leopold Kronecker quar- relled vigorously over the organisation of the theory of bilinear forms. That theory promised a "general" and "homogeneous" treatment of numerous questions arising in various 19th-century theoretical contexts, and it hinged on two theorems, stated independently by Jordan and Weierstrass, that would today be considered equivalent. It was, however, the perceived difference between those two theorems that sparked the 1874 controversy. Focusing on this quarrel allows us to explore the algebraic identity of the polynomial practices of the manipulations of forms in use before the advent of structural approaches to linear algebra. The latter approaches identified these practices with methods for the classification of similar matrices. We show that the prac- tices -- Jordan's canonical reduction and Kronecker's invariant computation -- reflect identities inseparable from the social context of the time. Moreover, these practices reveal not only tacit knowledge, local ways of thinking, but also -- in light of a long history tracing back to the work of Lagrange, Laplace, Cau- chy, and Hermite -- two internal philosophies regarding the significance of generality which are inseparable from two disciplinary ideals opposing algebra and arithmetic. By interrogating the cultural identities of such practices, this study aims at a deeper understanding of the history of linear algebra without focusing on issues related to the origins of theories or structures.

Abstract:We consider the problem of solving a linear system of equations which involves complex variables and their conjugates. We characterize when it reduces to a complex linear system, that is, a system involving only complex variables (and not their conjugates). In that case, we show how to construct the complex linear system. Interestingly, this provides a new insight on the relationship between real and complex linear systems. In particular, any real symmetric linear system of equations can be solved via a complex linear system of equations. Numerical illustrations are provided. The mathematics in this manuscript constitute an exciting interplay between Schur's complement, Cholesky's factorization, and Cauchy's interlace theorem.

Abstract:In this work, we give some criteria that allow us to decide when two sequences of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials are related via a Darboux transformation and to build explicitly such transformation. In particular, they allow us to see when and how any given sequence of polynomials is Darboux related to a diagonal matrix of classic orthogonal polynomials. We also explore the notion of Darboux-irreducibility and study some sequences that are not a Darboux transformation of classical orthogonal polynomials.
