Abstract:We prove some new instances of a conjecture of Bachoc, Couvreur and Zémor that generalizes Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem to a multiplicative version in a function field setting. As a consequence we find that if $F$ is a rational function field over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $S \subset F$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space such that $\dim S^2 = 2\dim S + 1$, then the conjecture holds.

Abstract:Deciding whether or not two polynomials have isomoprhic splitting fields over the rationals is the Field Isomorphism Problem. We consider polynomials of the form $f_n(x) = x^4-nx^3-6x^2+nx+1$ with $n \neq 3$ a positive integer and we let $K_n$ denote the splitting field of $f_n(x)$; a `simplest quartic field'. Our main theorem states that under certain hypotheses there can be at most one positive integer $m \neq n$ such that $K_m=K_n$. The proof relies on the existence of squares in recurrent sequences and a result of J.H.E. Cohn [3]. These sequences allow us to establish uniqueness of the splitting field under additional hypotheses in Section (5) and to establish a connection with elliptic curves in Section (6).

Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:One of the main themes in this thesis is the description of the signature of both the infinite place and the finite places in cubic function fields of any characteristic and quartic function fields of characteristic at least 5. For these purposes, we provide a new theory which can be applied to cubic and quartic function fields and to even higher dimensional function fields. One of the striking advantages of this theory to other existing methods is that is does not use the concept of p-adic completions and we can dispense of Cardano's formulae. Another key result comprises the construction of cubic function fields of unit rank 1 and 2, with an obvious fundamental system. One of the main ingredients for such constructions is the definition of the maximum value. This definition is new and very prolific in the context of finding fundamental systems. We conclude the thesis with miscellaneous results on the divisor class number h, including a new approach for finding divisors of h.

Abstract: In this paper we study various aspects of the Ekedahl-Serre problem. We formulate questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and Coleman-Oort type for general weakly special subvarieties in the Siegel moduli space, propose a conjecture relating these two questions, and provide examples supporting these questions. The main new result is an upper bound of genera for curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isogeneous to products of elliptic curves satisfying the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and we also refine previous results showing that certain weakly special subvarieties only meet the open Torelli locus in at most finitely many points.

Effective zero-cycles and the Bloch-Beilinson filtration

Abstract:A conjecture of Voisin states that two points on a smooth projective complex variety whose algebra of holomorphic forms is generated in degree 2 are rationally equivalent to each other if and only if their difference lies in the third step of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In this note, we formulate a generalization that allows for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles of higher degree, at the expense of looking deeper in the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In the first half, we provide evidence in support of this conjecture in the case of abelian varieties and projective hyper-Kähler manifolds. Notably, we give explicit criteria for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces, generalizing that of Marian-Zhao. In the second half, in an effort to explain our main conjecture, we formulate a second conjecture predicting when the diagonal of a smooth projective variety belongs to a subalgebra of the ring of correspondences generated in low degree.

Abstract:In this paper we address a conjecture by Kleppe and Miró-Roig stating that suitable twists by line bundles (on the smooth locus) of the exterior powers of the normal sheaf of a standard determinantal locus are arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay, and even Ulrich when the locus is linear determinantal. We do so by providing a very simple locally free resolution of such sheaves obtained through the so-called Weyman's Geometric Method.

Abstract:This paper contributes to the conjecture of R. Scott and R. Styer which asserts that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$, except for specific cases. The fundamental result proves the conjecture under some congruence condition modulo $c$ on $a$ and $b$. As applications the conjecture is confirmed to be true if $c$ takes some small values including the Fermat primes found so far, and this particularly provides an analytic proof of the celebrated theorem of Scott [R. Scott, On the equations $p^x-b^y=c$ and $a^x+b^y=c^z$, J. Number Theory 44(1993), 153-165] solving the conjecture for $c=2$ in a purely algebraic manner. The method can be generalized for smaller modulus cases, and it turns out that the conjecture holds true for infinitely many specific values of $c$ not being perfect powers. The main novelty is to apply a special type of the $p$-adic analogue to Baker's theory on linear forms in logarithms via a certain divisibility relation arising from the existence of two hypothetical solutions to the equation. The other tools include Baker's theory in the complex case and its non-Archimedean analogue for number fields together with various elementary arguments through rational and quadratic numbers, and extensive computation.
Elliptic units for complex cubic fields

Abstract:We propose a conjecture extending the classical construction of elliptic units to complex cubic number fields $K$. The conjecture concerns special values of the elliptic gamma function, a holomorphic function of three complex variables arising in mathematical physics whose transformation properties under $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbf{Z})$ were studied by Felder and Varchenko in the early 2000s. Using this function we construct complex numbers that we conjecture to be units in narrow ray class fields of $K$. We also propose a reciprocity law for the action of the Galois group on these units in the style of Shimura. To support our conjecture we offer numerical evidence and also prove a new type of Kronecker limit formula relating the logarithm of the modulus of these complex numbers to the derivatives at $s = 0$ of partial zeta functions of $K$. Our constructions unveil the role played by the elliptic gamma function in Hilbert's twelfth problem for complex cubic fields.

Imaginary quadratic fields $F$ with $X_0(15)(F)$ finite

Abstract:Caraiani and Newton have proven that if $F$ is an imaginary quadratic number field such that $X_0(15)$ has rank $0$ over $F$, then every elliptic curve over $F$ is modular. This paper is concerned with the quadratic fields $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ for a prime number $p$. We give explicit conditions on $p$ under which the rank is $0$, and prove that these conditions are satisfied for $87,5\%$ of the primes for which the rank is expected to be even based on the parity conjecture. We also show these conditions are satisfied if and only if rank $0$ follows from a $4$-descent over $\mathbb{Q}$ on the quadratic twist $X_0(15)_{-p}$. To prove this, we perform two consecutive $2$-descents and prove this gives rank bounds equivalent to those obtained from a $4$-descent using visualisation techniques for $\mathrm{Sha}[2]$. In fact we prove a more general connection between higher descents for elliptic curves which seems interesting in its own right.

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove, for a large class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, the existence of an explicit infinite family of quadratic twists with analytic rank $0$. In addition, we establish the $2$-part of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for many of these infinite families of quadratic twists. Recently, Xin Wan has used our results to prove for the first time the full Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for some explicit infinite families of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication.

Abstract:We use a function field version of the circle method to prove that a positive proportion of elements in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ are representable as a sum of three cubes of minimal degree from $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$, assuming a suitable form of the Ratios Conjecture and that the characteristic is greater than 3. The analogue of this conjecture for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions is known for large fixed $q$, via recent developments in homological stability.

Abstract:We study the solubility of cubic equations over the integers. Assuming a necessary congruence condition, the existence of such solutions is established when the $h$-invariant of $C$ is at least $14$, improving on work of Davenport-Lewis and generalizing the method from Heath-Brown's seminal work in the homogeneous case. We also provide an upper bound on the smallest solution, polynomially in the height of the coefficients. The method also yields new results in the homogeneous case where we generalize and improve on previous work of Browning, Dietmann and Elliott.

Abstract:Let $q$ be a quadratic form over a field $F$ and let $L$ be a field extension of $F$ of odd degree. It is a classical result that if $q_L$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic) then $q$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic). In turn, given two quadratic forms $q, q^\prime$ over $F$, if $q_L \cong q^\prime_L$ then $q \cong q^\prime$. It is natural to ask whether similar results hold for algebras with involution. We give a survey of the progress on these three questions with particular attention to the relevance of hyperbolicity, isotropy and isomorphism over some {appropriate} function field. Incidentally, we prove the anisotropy property in some {new} low degree cases.

Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Quantitative level lowering for weight two Hilbert modular forms

Abstract:We generalize a result of Ribet and Takahashi on the parametrization of elliptic curves by Shimura curves to the Hilbert modular setting. In particular, we study the behaviour of the parametrization of modular abelian varieties by Shimura curves associated to quaternion algebras $D$ over a totally real field $F$, as we vary $D$. As a consequence, we obtain that on these Shimura curves, the cohomological congruence module is equal to the ring theoretic congruence module even in cases where we do not have multiplicity one, thereby extending results of Manning and Böckle-Khare-Manning.

Abstract:Let K = Q(root-q), where q is any prime number congruent to 7 modulo 8, and let O be the ring of integers of K. The prime 2 splits in K, say 2O = pp*, and there is a unique Z(2)-extension K-infinity of K which is unramified outside p. Let H be the Hilbert class field of K, and write H-infinity = HK infinity. Let M(H-infinity) be the maximal abelian 2-extension of H-infinity which is unramified outside the primes above p, and put X(H-infinity) = Gal(M(H-infinity)/H-infinity). We prove that X(H-infinity) is always a finitely generated Z(2)-module, by an elliptic analogue of Sinnott's cyclotomic argument. We then use this result to prove for the first time the weak p-adic Leopoldt conjecture for the compositum J(infinity) of K-infinity with arbitrary quadratic extensions J of H. We also prove some new cases of the finite generation of the Mordell-Weil group E(J(infinity)) modulo torsion of certain elliptic curves E with complex multiplication by O.

Abstract:We classify all totally real number fields of degree at most 5 that admit a universal quadratic form with rational integer coefficients; in fact, there are none over the previously unsolved cases of quartic and quintic fields. This fully settles the lifting problem for universal forms in degrees at most 5. The main tool behind the proof is a computationally intense classification of fields in which every multiple of 2 is the sum of squares. We further extend these results to some real cyclotomic fields of large degrees and prove Kitaoka's conjecture for them.

Abstract:Let k be an imaginary quadratic number field (with class number 1). We describe a new, essentially linear-time algorithm, to list all isomorphism classes of cubic extensions L/k up to a bound X on the norm of the relative discriminant ideal. The main tools are Taniguchi's generalization of Davenport-Heilbronn parametrisation of cubic extensions, and reduction theory for binary cubic forms over imaginary quadratic fields. Finally, we give numerical data for k=Q(i), and we compare our results with ray class field algorithm ones, and with asymptotic heuristics, based on a generalization of Roberts' conjecture.
