On Monomial Deformations of Generalized Delsarte Polynomials

Abstract:By a generalized Delsarte polynomial we mean a Laurent polynomial whose exponent vectors are linearly independent. We consider certain monomial deformations of generalized Delsarte polynomials and study their associated differential modules. We determine the solutions at the origin, which are all classical ${}_kF_{k-1}$-hypergeometric functions with the variable raised to a power. Using standard changes of variable, we also obtain the solutions at infinity.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:We introduce general translations as solutions to Cauchy or Dirichlet problems. This point of view allows us to handle the heat-diffusion semigroup as a translation. With the given examples Kolmogorov-Riesz characterization of compact sets in certain $L^p_\mu$ spaces are given. Pego-type characterizations are also derived. Finally for some examples the equivalence of the corresponding modulus of smoothness and K-functional is pointed out.

Abstract:In this paper we presents further developments regarding the enrichment of the basic Theory of Order Completion. In particular, spaces of generalized functions are constructed that contain generalized solutions to all systems of continuous, nonlinear PDEs. In terms of the existence and uniqueness results previously obtained for such systems of equations, one may interpret the existence of generalized solutions presented here as a regularity result.

Abstract:A unifying framework for some extremal problems on locally compact Abelian groups is considered, special cases of which include the Delsarte and Turán extremal problems. A slight variation of the extremal problem is introduced and the different formulations are studied for equivalence. Extending previous work, a general result on existence of extremal functions for the new variant is proved under a certain general topological condition.

Abstract:Using the only admissible rank-two realisations of the Lie algebra of the affine group in one dimension in terms of the Lie algebra of Lie symmetries of the Ermakov-Pinney (EP) equation, some classes of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations solvable by reduction method are constructed. One class includes the standard EP equation as a special case. A new EP equation with a perturbed potential but admitting the same solution formula as EP itself arises. The solution of the dissipative EP equation is also discussed.

Abstract:We study the determinant of the second variation of an optimal control problem for general boundary conditions. Generically, these operators are not trace class and the determinant is defined as a principal value limit. We provide a formula to compute this determinant in terms of the linearisation of the extrenal flow. We illustrate the procedure in some special cases, proving some Hill-type formulas.

Abstract:This thesis pertains to the study of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations on "thin" structures. The first main objective is to establish the strong and weak low-dimensional counterparts of the parabolic Neumann problem. The main technical result is proving the closedness of the low-dimensional second-order operator. To construct a semigroup, a variant of Magyar of the Hille-Yosida Theorem for non-invertible operators is adapted. An alternative direction of study is presented to extend the class of accessible initial data. Weak-type parabolic problems are defined, and the existence of solutions is obtained by the application of the Lions version of the Lax-Milgram Lemma. The second aspect of the thesis is to examine the higher regularity of weak solutions to low-dimensional elliptic problems. We prove that for any weak low-dimensional elliptic solution, some Cosserat vector field exists as a witness of the membership of the solution to the domain of the second-order operator.

On Darboux theorems for geometric structures induced by closed forms

Abstract:This work reviews the classical Darboux theorem for symplectic, presymplectic, and cosymplectic manifolds (which are used to describe regular and singular mechanical systems), and certain cases of multisymplectic manifolds, and extends it in new ways to k-symplectic and k-cosymplectic manifolds (all these structures appear in the geometric formulation of first-order classical field theories). Moreover, we discuss the existence of Darboux theorems for classes of precosymplectic, k-presymplectic, k-precosymplectic, and premultisymplectic manifolds, which are the geometrical structures underlying some kinds of singular field theories. Approaches to Darboux theorems based on flat connections associated with geometric structures are given, while new results on polarisations for (k-)(pre)(co)symplectic structures arise.

Abstract:In this article, we find the fundamental solution of the fractional p-laplacian and use them to prove two different Liouville-type theorems. A non-existence classical Liouville-type theorem for p-superharmonic and a Louville type results for an Emden-Folder type equation with the fractional p-laplacian.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an existence and uniqueness result for a class of Dirichlet boundary value problems whose model is −Δpu=β|∇u|q+c|u|p−2u+finΩ,u=0on∂Ω, where Ω is an open bounded subset of RN, N≥2, 1<p<N, Δpu is the so-called p-Laplace operator, and p−1<q<p. We assume that β is a positive constant, c and f are measurable functions belonging to suitable Lorentz spaces. Our approach is based on Schauder fixed point theorem.

Parabolic PDEs on low-dimensional structures

Abstract:The paper concerns the theory of parabolic equations on a broad class of closed subsets of Euclidean space possessing a kind of tangent structure. A necessary framework for considering evolutionary problems is developed, and fundamental results about the existence and uniqueness of solutions are established. The presented approach is based on applying the semigroup theory of linear operators combined with special geometric constructions related to the shape of the examined structure. The proposed setting is consistent with the theory of elliptic equations on lower dimensional structures and with the second-order calculus of variations developed by Bouchitté and Fragala.

Abstract:In the general setting of a locally compact Abelian group $G$, the Delsarte extremal problem asks for the supremum of integrals over the collection of continuous positive definite functions $f: G \to \mathbb{R}$ satisfying $f(0) = 1$ and having $\mathrm{supp} f_{+} \subset \Omega$ for some measurable subset $\Omega$ of finite measure. In this paper, we consider the question of the existence of an extremal function for the Delsarte extremal problem. In particular, we show that there exists an extremal function for the Delsarte problem when $\Omega$ is closed, extending previously known existence results to a larger class of functions.

Derived $C^{\infty}$-Geometry I: Foundations

Abstract:This work is the first in a series laying the foundations of derived geometry in the $C^{\infty}$ setting, and providing tools for the construction and study of moduli spaces of solutions of Partial Differential Equations that arise in differential geometry and mathematical physics. To advertise the advantages of such a theory, we start with a detailed introduction to derived $C^{\infty}$-geometry in the context of symplectic topology and compare and contrast with Kuranishi space theory. In the body of this work, we avail ourselves of Lurie's extensive work on abstract structured spaces to define $\infty$-categories of derived $C^{\infty}$-rings and $C^{\infty}$-schemes and derived $C^{\infty}$-rings and $C^{\infty}$-schemes with corners via a universal property in a suitable $(\infty,2)$-category of $\infty$-categories with respect to the ordinary categories of manifolds and manifolds with corners (with morphisms the $b$-maps of Melrose in the latter case), and prove many basic structural features about them. Along the way, we establish some derived flatness results for derived $C^{\infty}$-rings of independent interest.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed two important new developments in the study of linear series on algebraic varieties. First, vector bundles have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing linear series on curves and surfaces. More recently, the viewpoints and techniques of higher dimensional geometry have started to play a central role. The purpose of these lectures is to provide a down-to-earth introduction to some of these new ideas and methods. The present notes, written with the assistance of G. Fernandez del Busto, are a considerably expanded version of a course given at the 1993 Regional Geometry Institute on Higher Dimensional Complex Geometry at Park City, Utah. While I hope they may be of interest to any geometers wishing to learn about recent work on linear series, I have particularly attempted to aim the discusion at a novice audience. My hope is that with a little faith and effort, these notes should be accessible to anyone having finished the standard introductory texts in algebraic geometry. The underlying theme of the lectures is the search for higher dimensional generalizations of the most basic facts about linear series on curves. But in an attempt to keep things elementary we work more or less exclusively on surfaces. Thus we end up discussing one central result -- viz. Reider's theorem -- from many points of view. Sticking to the case of surfaces allows one to eliminate many technical complexities, and I hope that parts of these lectures might therefore serve as a useful first introduction to the powerful cohomological techniques (involving $Q$-divisors) of contemporary

Abstract:In this article, we study the properties of a class of functional spaces which arise from the investigation of nonlinear differential equations. We establish some integral inequalities then by applying these inequalities, we prove some lemmas and theorems, which indicate the relation of these spaces (pn-spaces) with the Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces in the case when pn-spaces with constant and variable exponents.

Abstract:We show that for any semilinear partial differential equation of order m, the infinitesimals of the independent variables depend only on the independent variables and, if m>1 and the equation is also linear in its derivatives of order m-1 of the dependent variable, then the infinitesimal of the dependent variable is at most linear on the dependent variable.
