Abstract:In the present global context, continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring is paramount in addressing the global mortality rates attributed to hypertension. Achieving precise insights into the human cardiovascular system necessitates accurate measurement of BP, and the accuracy depends on the faithful recording of oscillations or pulsations. This task ultimately depends on the caliber of the pressure sensor embedded in the BP device. In this context, we have fabricated a flexible resistive...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of developing a non-invasive, highly sensitive, and wearable pressure sensor for continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring. Specifically, the study aims to address the shortcomings of existing blood pressure monitoring devices in terms of accuracy, convenience, and user-friendliness through the following points: 1. **Improving the accuracy of blood pressure monitoring**: Although existing automated blood pressure monitoring devices are convenient, their measurement accuracy still needs improvement. This paper proposes a flexible resistive pressure sensor based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge to enhance the accuracy of blood pressure measurement. 2. **Achieving non-invasive monitoring**: Traditional blood pressure monitoring methods usually require medical expertise and are not convenient for home use. The sensor proposed in this paper uses non-invasive technology, which can be easily used in a home environment without the need for professional operation. 3. **Enhancing user experience**: Existing blood pressure monitoring devices lack user-friendliness. The sensor designed in this paper is highly flexible and comfortable, making it easy to wear on the human body and providing continuous blood pressure monitoring. 4. **Meeting clinical standards**: To ensure the reliability and accuracy of the sensor, the research team conducted rigorous testing and compared it with traditional blood pressure monitoring devices and simulators, verifying that it meets the standards of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), the European Society of Hypertension (ESH), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In summary, the main goal of this paper is to develop a highly sensitive, non-invasive, and user-friendly blood pressure monitoring sensor to improve the accuracy and convenience of blood pressure monitoring, thereby better serving the early diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases.
